1. Jewellery / Metal Arts Alumni Exhibition at The George Fry Gallery Mar 17-Apr 4 The George Fry Gallery is thrilled to present a unique invitational Jewellery / Metal Arts alumni exhibition, featuring the work of New Brunswick College of Craft and Design graduates Claude Roussel (1989), Teena Dickerson (1995), and Shane Perley-Dutcher (2001), opening Thursday, March 17 from 4:30 - 6:30pm. The George Fry Gallery is indebted to Studio Head, Brigitte Clavette for organizing this unique exhibition and bringing together the talents and creative insight of three unique artists who employ the animal as muse. The show continues until April 4, 2016. For more information, please contact Karen Ruet at [email protected] and visit our Facebook site: The George Fry Gallery to see artist profiles. Everyone is welcome. Back to top.

2. Folk Art from the Collection of the Beaverbrook Art Gallery at Shannex Parkland Mar 17- Apr 24 The Maritimes has a rich history of folk art and artists. Shannex Parkland Fredericton is very pleased to partner with the Beaverbrook Art Gallery on an exhibition of folk paintings from the permanent collection by some of the region’s best-loved folk artists, including Maud Lewis and Joe Norris. The exhibition, entitled Art from Inside Out will open with a reception at 2pm on Thursday, March 17 in the Pedway Gallery (accessible through Governor Hall). Folk art is commonly referred to as the “people’s art”, and constitutes an honest and straightforward expression of the spirit of the people. Fresh and original, it serves as a potent means for telling personal stories and the stories of a culture and community. Characterized by an honesty of expression and simplicity of presentation, vivid imagination, resourcefulness and often humour, folk art makes its appeal directly and intimately. Although the subtleties of elaborate composition, mastery of technique, and sophisticated organization may not be the principal concerns of self-taught folk artists, they are often unconsciously achieved. In short, folk artists create art from the inside out by fusing personal insight with emotion, and not from the outside in. For further information please email [email protected] or call 455-7275. 3. Book Launch of Wayne Curtis’ In the Country at Westminster Books Mar 26 Please join us at Westminster Books on Saturday, March 26, from 12 to 2pm for the Fredericton launch of a new book of short stories by writer, historian, and conservationist, Wayne Curtis. His stories always celebrate the Miramichi and New Brunswick, and his new book, In the Country, is a collection of "unflinching but lovingly told stories of the hardships of rural life for his generation." 4. NB Film Co-op's Monday Night Film Series presents Spotlight (Mar 28 & 29) & Carol (Apr 4 & 7) Please Note: Due to the winter storm on Monday, March 21, the Monday Night screening of Rams has been rescheduled for Thursday March 24 at 7:30pm at Tilley Hall. Spotlight March 28 & 29, 2016, 7:30pm at Tilley Hall, UNB Campus Thomas McCarthy USA, 2015 English 128 minutes Principal Cast: Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams, John Slattery, Stanley Tucci, Live Schreiber Spotlight tells the riveting true story of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Boston Globe investigation that would rock the city and cause a crisis in one of the world’s oldest and most trusted institutions. When the newspaper’s tenacious “Spotlight” team of reporters (Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo, Rachel McAdams) delve into allegations of abuse in the Catholic Church, their year-long investigation uncovers a decades-long cover-up at the highest levels of Boston’s religious, legal, and government establishment, touching off a wave of revelations around the world. Very much in the All the President’s Men/Zodiac mold of slow-building, quietly gripping journalistic procedurals, this measured and meticulous ensemble drama sifts through a daunting pile of evidence to expose not just the Church’s horrific cycles of abuse and concealment, but also its uniquely privileged position in a society that failed its victims at myriad personal, spiritual and institutional levels. As he demonstrated in films like The Station Agent and The Visitor, McCarthy has always had a nicely understated touch with actors, and his ensemble here is a model of low-key excellence.

Carol April 4 & 7, 2016, 7:30pm at Tilley Hall, UNB Campus Director: Todd Haynes UK, USA, 2015 English 118 minutes Principal Cast: Rooney Mara, Cate Blanchett, Sarah Paulson In an adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s seminal novel The Price of Salt, Carol follows two women from very different backgrounds who find themselves in an unexpected love affair in 1950s New York. As conventional norms of the time challenge their undeniable attraction, an honest story emerges to reveal the resilience of the heart in the face of change. A young woman in her 20s, Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara), is a clerk working in a Manhattan department store and dreaming of a more fulfilling life when she meets Carol (Cate Blanchett), an alluring woman trapped in a loveless, convenient marriage. As an immediate connection sparks between them, the innocence of their first encounter dims and their connection deepens. While Carol breaks free from the confines of marriage, her husband (Kyle Chandler) begins to question her competence as a mother as her involvement with Therese and close relationship with her best friend Abby (Sarah Paulson) come to light. This term, 16 limited release, independent, foreign, and Canadian films will be shown. Admission is $7/film, but a film society membership reduces admission cost to $4/film. The series is open to all. Memberships are available at Tilley 102 every Monday night. For further info, contact NB Film Co-op at 455-1632 or [email protected]. 5. Theatre UNB Presents 7 Stories by Morris Panych Mar 30-Apr 2 Theatre UNB’s final production of the 2015-16 season will be 7 Stories, a dark comedy by Governor General’s Award-winning playwright Morris Panych. A man is on the ledge of a tall apartment building, contemplating suicide. Then, all around him, windows begin to open and the residents of the seventh storey jolt him out of his existential crisis and draw him into their own alternately strange, sad, and hilarious stories. A couple who seek to enliven their romance by trying to kill each other, a religious fanatic who plays god with the lives of her downstairs neighbors, a washed-up actor who relinquishes his own identity to perform the ultimate “long run” role of made-to-order husband to a wealthy bride, and an affluent socialite redesigning her apartment for the eighteenth time are just some of the offbeat characters who populate the seven windows of the play’s set. Caught in the middle of the chaos, just when it seems he has been driven to the brink, a strange intervention leads the man to a surprising conclusion. One of the most popular works by one of Canada’s leading playwrights, 7 Stories offers both comic and poignant commentary on the alienation, loneliness, and materialism of modern urban life, which leaves so many of us trapped within our own stories, unable to interact meaningfully with one another. Directed by Len Falkenstein and featuring a cast of seven UNB Drama students, 7 Stories will be performed Wednesday, March 30 through Saturday, April 2 at 7:30pm nightly at Memorial Hall on the UNB campus. Tickets are available at the door, priced at $14 regular, $10 for seniors and the underemployed, and $8 for students. For more information, phone 447-3078 or email [email protected] or visit facebook.com/TheatreUNB. Back to top.

9. Glenn Hall and Jonathan MacDonald’s Common Ground at Gallery 78 Apr 1 Glenn Hall and Jonathan MacDonald are kindred spirits. Both live, at least part of the time, in “off-the grid” cabins in the woods of New Brunswick. Both studied art at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (and subsequently rejected its focus on “Conceptual Art”), both love to paint the rustic rural landscapes they have chosen to call home. Although their long friendship began with Glenn as the teacher and Jon as the “precocious” student soon the influences flowed in both directions. This joint exhibition explores the art of how each has chosen to live and celebrates the “Common Ground” of their shared ideas and inspirations. The exhibition begins April 1, 2016 (on-line March 29). Note: Current Printmaking exhibition concludes Saturday, March 26. Gallery 78, is located at 796 Queen St. (corner of Church and Queen). 17. Special Sunday Night Screening of The Lady in the Van at Tilly Hall, UNB Campus Apr 3 The Lady in the Van Nicholas Hytner UNITED KINGDOM, 2015 English 104 minutes Principal Cast: Maggie Smith, Alex Jennings, Jim Broadbent, Frances De La Tour, Roger Allam Based on Alan Bennett’s memoir and hit West End play, this brilliantly witty, “mostly true” story chronicles an unlikely friendship between a writer and an elderly eccentric. “The writer is double,” playwright Alan Bennett (Alex Jennings, Belle, The Queen) explains early in the film: “There is the self who does the writing and there is the self who does things.” The Lady in the Van is a story about the self who, however reluctantly, does things — in Bennett’s case, opening his door (or at least his driveway) to Miss Mary Shepherd (Dame Maggie Smith, My Old Lady, Quartet), an ornery, impolite, and bullying homeless woman who claims to take advice from the Virgin Mary. Despite his private nature, Bennett takes pity on the elderly woman and agrees to let her park her rundown van on his property for three months. It’s likely; however, that curiosity has as much to do with Bennett’s decision as does charity. Where did Miss Shepherd find this van? Where did she learn French? And who is the strange man (Jim Broadbent, Brooklyn, Le Week-End) who keeps coming round in the middle of the night? While the questions are many, Bennett has plenty of time to discover the answers to them, as Miss Shepherd tests the limits of his hospitality by stretching the original three-month stay into 15 years. Directed by veteran Nicholas Hytner (The History Boys), The Lady in the Van is a playful, inventive, and relentlessly funny film that reminds us of the value of taking a chance on strangers — and of the long road that gradually turns strangers into friends. 1. Opportunity for Local Artists to Fill Retail Spaces in Fredericton’s Barracks Fine Craft Shops The Barracks Fine Craft Shops are located in the former Soldiers’ Barracks, within the Historic Garrison District on the corner of Queen and Carleton Streets. Fredericton Tourism & Culture leases these spaces, which are meant to showcase Fredericton’s rich culture and craft industry through retail operations geared toward the tourism market. Emphasis is on fine craft, handmade products, or goods of a cultural significance. Preferred operations will be those that have a demonstration component, interactive feature, or entertainment value. These retail spaces are for craft business incubation, not a long-term retail space. All goods sold must be handmade locally and be approved through the application process. The craftsperson will sign a lease to become a tenant of the City of Fredericton and operate a shop June 6 through September 5, 2016, inclusive. They may use the space solely for their own business or bring on partners at their discretion with approval from the Barracks Product Review Panel. Rent is $600 for the season + $100 refundable deposit. This includes, among other things, the cost of mandatory insurance. All interested parties must make application before April 4, 2016. For full information, a list of covenants and an application form, please contact us by e-mail at [email protected] or call 460-2041. Back to top.

2. Nominations sought for The Playhouse Honours 2016 The Fredericton Playhouse is asking the public for nominations for The Playhouse Honours 2016. Since 2008, the Fredericton Playhouse board of directors has awarded The Playhouse Honours annually. The recognition honours individuals’ involvement in the performing arts in Fredericton, fostering a deeper appreciation of the value that people can make to community life through their work in music, theatre, dance, spoken word, and multidisciplinary performing arts. A permanent display in the west gallery of the Playhouse recognizes the honourees. Nominations can be made by any person or organization. Underscoring the personal investment that they have made in the community, recipients must be individuals, not companies or organizations. Recipients may be a professional or amateur artist, administrator, volunteer, educator, philanthropist, advocate, organizer, etc. A selection committee (jury) comprised of members of the local arts community will review the submissions and recommend an honouree to the Fredericton Playhouse board of directors. The deadline for nominations is April 15, 2016. Past recipients include Ilkay Silk (2008), Brent Staeben (2009), Philip Sexsmith (2010), Walter Learning (2011), Mabel Doak (2012), Bonnie Kilburn (2013), Michael Doherty (2014), and Hrvoje and Aida Tisler (2015). The Playhouse Honours is proudly presented by Atlantic Mediaworks. To submit a nomination, please send in the following information and complete a written submission of no more than two (2) pages describing the reasons you feel that your nominee should be considered for The Playhouse Honours.
