What is cheerleading? What is cheerleading?Cheerleading is basically a mix between gymnastics and dance!
Its performed with a group of people doing, flips, tricks, stunts, cheering,
chants, dancing, being thrown in the air, standing on someones hands and
or shoulders, building up into human pyramids, etc etc.
On a high level cheerleading is also considered a sport!
There are many massive competitions for cheerleading. Especially
in the U.S. as thats where it originated from.
Just like the move Bring it on, many teams rally up and compete
against others to be the best.
Serious cheerleaders can be considered as serious athletes aswell. Mostteams would be going out to the gym, having to be in tip top shape! Not only
to just look good, but cheerleading takes up a lot of energy with all the
demanding physical activity involved. Therefore, having to be fit to keep up.
Cheerleading squads look for specific body types majority of the time, which
can be hard to achieve.
But speaking, that mostly involves the more mature ones. The
younger ones dont have to work as hard, the things they do are based more
on fun; and then if they continue, things get more harder as they keep going.

When/where did itWhen/where did it
originate?originate?Thomas Peeble introduced the idea to get a group of people cheering at
football games, to the university of Minnesota.
But it was not until 1898, that a student from that university, called
Johnny Campbell who led a crowd in cheering this Rah, Rah, Rah! Sku-
u-mar, Hoo-Rah! Hoo-Rah! Varsity! Varsity! Varsity, Minn-e-So-Tah!
Making this day, november 2, 1898 the official birth date of organized
cheerleading.
Then later after that, the university organized a yell leader
squad, made up of 6 males. Still using that same chant.
Cheerleading actually started off as a male activity! In 1903,
a fraternity called gamma sigma were the first ever squad.
And then it wasnt until 1923 that females got to participate in
cheerleading. Nowadays, majority of cheerleaders are female!
Around the world 90+% are female.Thats why most guys thinks its such a girl thing to be
cheerleading. Its funny, when it was a male who founded it, and it was a
male activity originally.

Was this styleWas this style
represented in anyrepresented in any
movies?movies?Yes, there have been a couple of movies that focus on this particular dance
style.
The most famous one that we all no of is, BRING IT ON!
Its about cheerleading squad called Rancho Carne Toros from San Diego,
who had everything going for them. They had spirit, spunk, sass and killer
routines, that made them sure that they would be winning the national
championship trophy, once again for the 6th time in a row. But when their newly
elected captain torrence, discovered that there routines were stolen fromanother squad called east compton clovers, there road to another successful
year wasnt looking so good after all. Last captain, Big red had been stealing
there routine and cheers for years.
While the Toros are hell bent on coming up with a new routine for
nationals, the clovers are finding ways to come up with enough money to get to
nationals. Both squadsare determined for one thing. The toros keeping there reputation as being the
best and the Clovers wanting people to finally see that theyve been the best,
but nobodys just been able to see them; get the recognition that they deserve.
Other
movies - Bring it on: In it to win it, Bring it on: All or nothing, Bring it on again,

(undies) underneath that go with there uniform. There uniforms are just basic
designs, using bold colours. Just like the pictures on the left. Also, the pom poms
that are used, match the squads uniform. The males on the other hand,
wear long pants and t-shirts.
Sometimes both male and female can wear
long sleeves, depending on what their squads
uniform design is.
Now, with the shoes. White shoes are mostappropriate for cheerleading. And they wear
white socks underneath, or socks with there
squad colours on them.
