The Life Cycle of your Evaluation Plan

Anevaluationshouldprovideinformationthatiscredibleanduseful,enablingtheincorporationoflessonslearnedintothedecisionmakingprocess.

Thereispowerinagoodstory.Youmayhaveusedcasestudystoriesformanyreasons,includingwhenadvocatingforaproject.Personaltestimonialfromparticipantswhohavehadapositiveexperiencecanbeverypersuasive.However,thisisnotwhatismeantby‘casestudy’inevaluation.Foranevaluator,thequalityofacasestudyhingesonthemethodsusedtocollectandanalysethedataandthewritingorpresentationofthestory.Theevaluatorwillselectcasestudiesthatarerelevanttotheoutcomesorissuestheevaluationseekstoexplore.Youcanhaveacasestudyofasingleindividual,groupsofindividuals,anobject,evenaplaceorasituation.Arangeofdifferentkindsofdatamaybepiecedtogetherinacasestudytotellastoryrelevanttothequestionsthatinformtheevaluation.

Itisimportanttorememberthatacasestudystoryisparticulartoanindividualcase;becauseoneparticipantexperiencedsomethingduringaproject,thisdoesnotnecessarilymeanthatallparticipantsdid,orthatanyfutureparticipantswill.Thisiswhyitisvitaltoselectyourcasescarefully,sothattheycangenuinelyhelptoilluminatetheparticularissuesyouareinvestigating.

Limitingfactor Alimitingfactorissimplysomethingthathaslimitedyourprogressorimpact.Itmightalsobecalleda‘challenge’.Forexample,yourplanstoimproveaccesstoyourbuildingmightbehamperedbyyounotreallyhavingunderstoodtheaccessneedsofawideenoughrangeofvisitors.

Methodology Methodologysimplymeans‘howwewilldoit’.So,inevaluationterms,itmeanshowyouwillevaluateyourproject:howandwhenyouwillcollecttheevidenceandhowyouwilldoit,alongwithhowyouwillthenreviewthatevidenceandcreateandshareyourstoryaboutyourproject.

Objective Objectivesarespecificthingsthatyouwanttoachievethroughyourproject.Forexample,ifyouraimistoimproveaccesstoyourbuilding,yourobjectivesmightincludemakingthebuildingmorephysicallyaccessibleoradaptingyourwebsite.

Youmightsometimeshearpeoplereferto‘SMART’objectives.Thisisanacronym;itmeansobjectivesthatare:
