set in a mythical version of New Yorkwhere no one locks apartment doors andpeople are fine with babies in bars, has itssneak peek Wednesday, Sept. 12.

The half-hour sitcom then settles intoits regular time slot two Wednesdayslater. It isn’t fantastical the way “Grimm”is but rather conveniently mythical theway Hollywood likes life, with incrediblynasty ex-wives walking all over spinelessmen and kids running roughshod over be-fuddled parents.

Though a knee-jerk reaction would bethat this is inherently sexist — whyshould it be funny just because males areminding the children? — the show is nei-ther incredibly funny nor offensively sex-ist, and it has promise based on one of thecouples.

The strongest is Tempestt Bledsoe(“The Cosby Show”) and Anthony An-derson (“Law & Order”) as Marny andGary. She has a corporate job while heminds their four sons.

“I think Marny is very much in lovewith her husband, her children,” Bledsoesays. “She is very passionate about want-ing to have a happy home. Gary is stay-ing home with the children. Who is best

equipped to do this when you have fourkids? She wants her kidsfed, bathed and in bedevery night.”

Jamie-Lynn Sigler(“The Sopranos”) playsEmily, a stay-at-homemom married to Nick(Zach Cregger, “FriendsWith Benefits”). He hasa job outside the housebut helps with theirschool-aged daughterand baby son.

The BAYONNE SPECIAL IMPROVEMENT DISTRICTStarting this past July 1st, the Bayonne Urban En-

terprise Zone Board has assumed the management ofthe Bayonne Special Improvement District (BayonneSID), which extends from 17th to 30th Streets onBroadway. This change in management occurred aspart of Mayor Mark A. Smith’s effort to make gov-ernment more efficient and accountable. By movingthe management of the Bayonne SID to the UEZBoard, more of the tax monies that are assessed on thebusinesses in the district will be spent on efforts to im-prove the district as opposed to office expenses andoverhead. Mayor Smith recognizes the importance ofa thriving downtown shopping district and is commit-ted to working towards the goal of making Broadwaya destination for families to shop and dine.

The district already has a nine-hole miniature golfcourse that has recently been upgraded. With specialthanks to Lauren Dellabella, a successful farmer’smarket has been added to the district every Tuesdayfrom 2pm to 7pm until the end of October. Thefarmer’s market continues to grow and attracts over600 people each Tuesday.

name, but Katie Couric maintains “itisn’t all about me.”

The television veteran is followingher tenures as co-anchor of NBC’s“Today” and anchor and managing edi-tor of “CBS Evening News” with herown talk show, as the syndicated“Katie” begins its weekday run Mon-day, Sept. 10. Many days, the hour willdeal with one topic, and two or three onother days ... but Couric says the entireseries will reflect her desire for “smartconversation” about widely relatablesubjects she has her own experienceswith, from caring for an aging parent tolearning about cancer.

“There are no guarantees in this busi-ness,” she says during a one-on-one chatin Los Angeles, “but I do think Jeff(Zucker, the show’s executive producerand former NBC programming chiefwho also collaborated with Couric on‘Today’) and I do have a good trackrecord. We work really well together,and I hope when people hear our names,they’ll think about quality television —and a certain sensibility and approachthat is intelligent.”

Though appearances by the famouswill be in the “Katie” mix (Sheryl Crowis the composer-performer of the show’stheme song), Couric is eager to show-case the achievements of people not aswell-known.

“I’ve always been drawn to stories ofeveryday people who have overcomeobstacles in their livesand have been put insituations they neverenvisioned — and havebeen able to get to theother side,” she says.“Those are some of themost memorable inter-views for me and, Ithink, some of the mostmoving for an audi-ence.”

“I’ve been racking up a lot of fre-quent-flier miles,” she says, “but it’sbeen really fun. I have a lot of respectfor local news; I did it myself for a num-ber of years (in Miami and Washington,D.C.), and the stations I’m going to beon are great. I feel very flattered thatthey’re welcoming me into their homesin a way, and it’s important for me toknow their people so we can feel con-nected.”

For all the milestones she’s had,Couric reasons the launch of “Katie” is“its own animal. This is not my firstrodeo, and I’m not the fresh-faced youngwoman I was when I was named co-an-chor of ‘Today.’ That was probably oneof the watershed moments of my career,because I never in a million years envi-sioned having that job. It seemed surrealto me, but going into the talk show genreseems like a very natural progression ofevents for me.”

With any move she makes, Couric hastwo other people to consider — Ellie andCarrie, her daughters by her late hus-band, attorney Jay Monahan — and shesays they’re all for her new show.

“I’ve always prided myself on the factthat the person I am off camera is thesame person I am on camera, and I thinkthey’re excited for me to have a venuewhere I can show off the many differentsides of who I am, from the serious tothe ridiculous. I think they see this as anexciting next step.”

In the case of theMatthew Perry comedy “Go On,” the planworked quite well, and NBC hopes the audi-ence numbers will only build when the showstarts its regular run this Tuesday, Sept. 11.

The network tried the same thing with “An-imal Practice,” but that backfired a bit when itdecided to slip in the full episode preview be-fore the Olympic closing ceremonies fullyended, making some viewers distinctly (andquite vocally) displeased. The veterinary clinic

MINI STRAWBERRY-SWIRLCHEESECAKES

You don’t need any of the special equipmentsome cheesecake recipes require, particularly aspringform pan with removable sides. In fact,they bake in 1-cup (250-ml) ramekins - andeven a muffin pan will do fine. And my cheese-cakes are crustless, so there’s no mussing orfussing with graham cracker or cookie crumbs.

You can use another kind of berry instead, ifyou like, such as raspberries, boysenberries orblueberries. Whatever your choice, try to findgood-quality organic berries to ensure that youhave the best-tasting, healthiest and most envi-ronmentally responsible results.

As for the cheese part, my recipe features thesame creamy mixture we use to make Spago’spopular cheesecake. I always get the best re-sults from the widely available blocks ofPhiladelphia brand. Be sure to buy regularcream cheese - not whipped or light varieties.

And don’t forget to make enough of these lit-tle treats. I love them so much, I’ve even beenknown to double the recipe. If you bake themin individual ceramic ramekins, you don’t evenhave to unmold the extras. Just keep them cov-ered with plastic wrap in the refrigerator andenjoy them several days later, right out of themold or unmolded and decorated with moresauce and berries.

Just don’t eat it standing up in front of the re-frigerator.

STRAWBERRY COMPOTE:3 baskets fresh strawberries, 1 pint each,hulled and cut into thick slices3/4 cup granulated sugar1-1/2 cinnamon sticks

SPAGO CHEESECAKE FILLING:1-1/2 pounds cream cheese,cut into small pieces, at room temperature1-1/4 cups granulated sugar1/4 teaspoon salt3/4 cup sour cream1 tablespoon dark rum1 tablespoon lemon juice2 teaspoons vanilla extract3 eggsWaterSliced fresh strawberries or whole blueberries, for garnishPosition the rack in the center of the oven.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. With non-stick cooking spray, coat each of a dozen 1-cupramekins. Set aside.

First, make the Strawberry Compote: In amedium nonreactive saucepan, combine theberries, sugar and cinnamon sticks. Cook overmedium-high heat, stirring occasionally, untilthe mixture thickens slightly and just coats theback of a spoon, about 15 minutes. Set aside tocool.

Prepare the Spago Cheesecake Filling: Putthe cream cheese, sugar and salt in the large

bowl of an electric mixer or in a large mixingbowl. Using the paddle or beaters of a handheldelectric mixer, beat at medium speed untilsmooth, stopping occasionally to scrape downthe sides and the beaters with a rubber spatula.Raise the speed to high and continue to beatuntil the mixture is creamy. Add the sourcream, rum, lemon juice and vanilla, and con-tinue beating at medium speed until wellblended. Add the eggs and beat just until com-bined.

Bring a kettle of water to a boil.Meanwhile, spoon about 1 tablespoon of the

cooled Strawberry Compote into the bottom ofeach ramekin. Reserve the rest covered in therefrigerator. Fill each ramekin with the SpagoCheesecake Filling.

Arrange the ramekins in a large baking panwith sides. Open the oven, carefully slide outthe shelf and place the baking pan on the shelf.Pour boiling water into the pan halfway up thesides of the ramekins. Carefully slide in theshelf, close the oven door and bake until thecheesecakes begin to pull away from the sidesof the ramekins and are almost firm to thetouch, 35 to 40 minutes.

Carefully remove the baking pan from theoven. Carefully lift out the ramekins and placeon a wire rack and let cool. Refrigerate, cov-ered, overnight.

When ready to serve, run a sharp knifearound the inside edge of each ramekin and in-vert the cheesecake onto a serving plate. Thecompote will run down the sides of each cake.If they stick, dip the bottoms of the ramekinsin hot water for 30 seconds to loosen thecheesecakes and try again.

Garnish with slices of fresh strawberries or afew blueberries. Serve immediately, accompa-nied by extra Strawberry Compote.
