Art Stimulus Funding for Madera Kids!

Oh yes, we applied for stimulus funding last year in an effort to save jobs for artists who teach art in the Madera Unified Schools through our visiting-artist program at the Arts Council. And yes, we received money to provide art lessons for each and every first grader in the district one day a week at all 16 elementary schools in the Madera Unified School District this semester. These funds are already working and the response has been fabulous!

Artists arrive at the school with art supplies for all the kids that they will teach during the month. Each lesson has been written and rewritten and approved by the arts program manager at the Arts Council. The lessons all comply with the State of California Visual and Performing Arts Standards. The artists meet regularly for training sessions, and they continually adjust their lessons to fit the student’s needs. Every month they rotate to different schools, so that by the end of the school year, all the kids will have been exposed to various lessons including painting, drawing, ceramics, photography and mixed media. These lessons also present extensive vocabulary for first graders with words like perspective and shading and cube and they talk about famous artists and learn names like Van Gogh and Picasso.

The Arts Council’s federal stimulus grant saved nine jobs: one administrator and eight artists. Although these are part-time jobs, the artists are working four days a week at two to five hours per day teaching material that the school district can’t afford to offer the kids. They bring exuberance to the classroom and provide an opportunity for the classroom teachers to observe students learning under different conditions where creativity, dexterity and boldness often advance the

student’s ability to succeed. They get messy and they learn to clean up, and they get to handle paint and clay and pastels and understand the use of these materials. They gain skills in creativity and determination and they love it! The teachers love it too. When a few artists had to miss a couple of days due to illnesses, the teachers and students missed the lessons very much. Their most pressing question was whether or not they could make up the lessons that they missed.

These current budget conditions have forced us to eliminate many of the school activities that attracted many of us to learning in the first place. Some of my most memorable school days were when the gym teacher, the choir lady, and the art teacher came around. My paintings, poetry books and clay sculptures were the things that my mother saved from my elementary school days. Many of the MUSD schools plan to display these art works at the end of the semester, and we will select some of the very best examples to display on the administrative office walls. Moms and dads should save these precious art works in a very special place at home, because our schools today can’t guarantee that there will be any more. We will apply for more grant funding for next year and we’d like to include the first and second grade, but we won’t know until the end of the summer. Wish us luck!

bookkeeper.

Everyone is expected to purchase dinner tickets, as this is a fund raiser. Dinner tickets are $15, before June 1; from June 1st to June 5th tickets will be $20. Entertainment is by the “String Bandits,” a lively and toe tapping Bluegrass and Country music band.

Registering in advance is important, as space is limited and will be assigned on a first-come basis. Please register by May 25th. If you are bringing guests, be sure they have their dinner tickets, and remind them to bring some comfy chairs to sit on, as the museum chairs are metal. Doors will be open to the public at 3:00 p.m. Demonstrators set up by 2:15. Contact: Vivian Aumond-Capone: 559-642-6033 [email protected] or Kay Good: 559-642-4242, [email protected]
