ARTICULATION(or, how we use our bows to change the way notes sound!)Language Objectives:Beginner: SWBAT recognize the terms (and their proper spellings) arco, pizzicato, col legno, accent, and staccato.SWBAT recognize the proper symbols in music for each vocabulary word.Intermediate:SWBAT define each of the previous terms.SWBAT associate the proper technique with each term as indicated.AdvancedSWBAT properly pronounce each of the previous terms as modeled in the audio track. What does articulation mean?Articulation refers to the style in which a songs notes are played. Articulation can be indicated by marks, like dots or lines, or with a written out word, like pizzicato, which means strings should be plucked with the finger instead of played with the bow. These marks and words change the way the notes are played.

AccentsDefinition: stress or emphasis on a musical note

What it looks like in music:

Notice how these accent markings look like miniature hairpin decrescendo markings. That is exactly how they should be played, with an emphasis at the beginning of the note!

See? Accents are just tiny decrescendos!!ACCENT

DECRESCENDO

Listen to this lovely example of accents in music!

Legato vs. StaccatoLEGATOMeans smooth and connected. It can be indicated with a slur marking, or just the word itself, written in the music.

STACCATOMeans short and separated, and is indicated by putting a dot beneath the note

(Dont forget! Legato is the opposite of Staccato!)

In fact, Staccato notes are so short, they are actually played like this:

Staccato quarter notes are actually played as eighth notes!

Here are two examples of staccato in the wild!

Col Legno

This type of bow stroke is played with the wood of the bow instead of the hair. In fact, legno literally means wood in Italian.

It should be pronounced in 3 syllables like koh leyn-yoh
