The following is a compilation of some of the articles that have appeared in the Journal of the American Medical Association from Jan- uary through November 1989 that have dealt with aspects of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. The individual articles address multiple facets of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), all of which have relevance to our understanding of the spectrum of the dis- ease and to issues related to infection. Infection control practitioners and hospital epidemiolo- gists need to know as much as possible about the natural history and public health aspects of AIDS, because we are frequently called on to provide our expertise on these issues inside and outside our hospital settings.
