A Residency with ArtHouse Jersey

What we doArtHouse Jersey supports the arts and artists on both a local and an international level. We support the careers of local artists through seed funding and professional guidance. We produce new work and exhibitions, bringing international art and artists over to the Island to enrich our community’s cultural life and send it back out to reach wider audiences. We provide opportunities for people of all abilities and backgrounds to access the arts through community projects and outreach.

Who we areArthouse Jersey is a not for profit arts organisation and registered charity located in the Channel Islands. Based at the historic Greve de Lecq Barracks on the north coast of Jersey, we provide a unique artistic hub in a location of outstanding natural beauty. Our heritage site comprises studio space alongside high-quality, sensitively converted and modern accommodation overlooking the sea; the perfect setting to foster creativity and allow space to breathe life into new work.

Jersey

Jersey, the largest of the Channel Islands, is located between England and France. A self-governing British Crown

Dependency, the Island is proud of its unique mix of British and French cultures, its cows and its outstanding natural

landscape of beaches, cliffside walking trails, inland valleys and historic castles.

A Residency with ArtHouse Jersey

A residency with us offers a change of scene, a break from the usual routine and an idyllic location to allow you the headspace to focus on your work.

Our residency scheme

We run one of the most desirable residency schemes in Europe. Artists, writers, creators and performers are invited to spend time at our coastal location creating new work. You will be provided with accommodation, access to studio space and the support and local advice of the ArtHouse Jersey team.

A residency with us offers a change of scene, a break from the usual routine and an idyllic location to allow you the headspace to focus on your work. Jersey is famed for its beautiful coastal landscape, its world class food and its thriving dairy and finance industry. The Island also has a long history of inspiring artists and writers, with celebrated names such as Victor Hugo and Claude Cahun among its alumni.

What we offerWe will accommodate you in beautifully renovated self-catering accommodation and in some cases may be able to cover your transportation costs to and from Jersey. We have a team of internationally experienced producers and a wide network of local artists we can connect you with. Equally we can simply leave you in peace to focus on your work.

All we ask in return is that you credit us appropriately on any new works created whilst here in Jersey and consider taking part in a workshop, talk or other suitable activity that engages the local community.

We offer residencies of one to six weeks depending on the work you plan to do here. We particularly welcome residencies that engage directly with Jersey as a place, or could open up outreach opportunities for our artists, students and the wider community, but this is not essential. Generally, we are only able to offer accommodation (and sometimes travel) costs, though occasionally we may be able to assist with other costs if the project is aligned with our programme aspirations.

We endeavour to forge lasting relationships with international talent whose work we believe in. We hope a residency with us may be the beginning of a long standing connection both with AHJ and with the island itself.

The Artist Lock-In has always seemed like a magical oasis of creativity - artists working in diverse disciplines, drawn from all over the world, coming together to be inspired by the Jersey landscape and each other. Now it has the perfect new home at Greve de Lecq Barracks, beautifully renovated, comfortable, spacious, convivial, and surprisingly luxurious for a former barracks! For ten days we have explored, made artworks on the wonderful beach, retreated from some of the wild weather, played, rested, eaten sumptuous food and reflected on the work. We’ll be back...’

Sue Hill, WildWorks, Founding Artist.

“The Barracks have been the most incredible place to stay; gorgeous views and comfortable rooms. I’ve had some of the best nights of sleep that I’ve had in a very long time. Not only have you nurtured us through our film project, but it’s also been the perfect place to start a new writing project of my own.”

Karla, Forest Fringe.

“This was my first time taking part in a residency and I found the space and time away very valuable. It is rare to have such dedicated, guilt-free time to one piece of work, I find.”

Theresa Ikoko, playwright.

“I’m still smiling about my time with you guys - thank you so much for your time and care.” -

Somalia Seaton, writer.

“It was such a brilliant 10 days and I am so grateful to have had the time to really dig into this play without distraction from my normal life. I also loved having other writers living in the house with me, we all provided a lot of support for each other during our time there, and it was great to have people to explore Jersey on days off. Overall it was a profoundly useful experience, and I really value that you can do with your residency what you wish, which I think is a hugely beneficial thing, instead of it feeling overly managed.”

Miriam Battye, playwright.

“I felt very nurtured, from ArtHouse but also from the island. I made new friends, gained new contacts, communicated with many people and feel very happy with the time. I feel that I have always made work about Jersey and when I was on the island making work (for the first time in 10 years) I was able to pick apart what it was about Jersey that I hold so near. I still am learning from the residency, It is very much still part of my daily practice, seeds that were planted then may not bloom for years, but I am very conscious that there is growing.”

Lulu Macdonald, Artist.

“We had the most amazing time. I genuinely can’t think of anyone else we could have done this absurd project with.”

Andy Field, Forest Fringe.
