Even Sidewalk Junk Can Become Treasured Collage Artwork
New Book Inspires Crafters to Repurpose Found Objects
Artful Collage from Found Objects (Stackpole Books; August 2012) is an inspiring guide for those who like to save bits of paper, ribbon, old newspapers and other ephemera. With the 3-dimensional collection of works from collagist Ellen Spector Platt, readers will discover their saved trinkets can be transformed into beautiful treasures. The artist uses stuff from around the house, tucked away keepsakes, leftover craft project materials, and even discards she finds on the sidewalk to design unique wall art. Collage art can tell a story, like scrapbooking, or pay tribute to beloved people, showcase special memories, or be used as seasonal decorations. Inside Artful Collage from Found Objects, the author shares the steps for the collage process, including gathering stuff already at home, using her 3R Policy: Recycle, Repurpose and Reuse. Other steps include imagining what you would like to create, manipulating your gathered materials, designing or laying out your project on a board, adhering your objects onto the board, and finally, displaying your artwork.
After readers have learned the steps to creating a collage, 46 color projects in ten different themes will illustrate the possibilities of artful collage with repurposed objects. Projects inside Artful Collage from Found Objects include: -A memory box in honor of the authors mother with elements coming from an old sewing box -Rusty Memories displaying an old truck license plate and chicken wire -The Crown Jewels a collage necklace made of locust pods, acorns, pine cones, & magnolia leaves -Whats Your Angle features papers stamped by the authors granddaughters using cross-sections of onions, peppers and other vegetables -My Ireland a vacation memory board using torn paper and maps -The Stuff of Roses designed using old lace, fabric, ribbon and doilies -And much more Each project includes a list of materials, the background used and the type of adhesive needed. The author explains where the inspiration for the piece came from, and in many instances, how she created it with instructions and step-by-step color photos. Artful Collage from Found Objects will give new life to whats inside our junk drawers.
