ARTEXPRESS
An exemplar teaching and learning program
presented by the partnership between
BOSTES & NSW Department of Education
http://artexpress.artsunit.nsw.edu.au/
A brief history…1950s to1982 and beyond
Student artworks were first exhibited in the late 1950s. Venues included the Commonwealth
Bank and at Sydney University and the University of NSW.
Some works, were taken to country high schools where Art Teachers hung and supervised
the showings.
The first HSC Visual Arts Examination was held in 1967, with works shown at Clancy
Auditorium at the University of NSW and at the Secondary Principals' Conference. These
venues were used until 1975.
In 1976 the show moved to the Seymour Centre at Sydney University. Between 1977 and
1980, the Clancy Auditorium became the central Sydney exhibition venue. In 1978/79
Orange Regional Gallery showed a small collection. These exhibitions were extremely
popular.
During the 1980s exhibitions continued to be mounted by consultants attached to the
Directorate of Studies (Curriculum). In 1982 the Sydney Town Hall hosted the exhibition,
now called ARTEXPRESS, as part of the Festival of Sydney. In 1983 the exhibition moved
to Centrepoint Tower and a small collection was shown by the Art Gallery of NSW.
In 1984/85, the Hunter Region organised exhibitions of ARTEXPRESS in Newcastle,
supported by the Newcastle Herald and the United Permanent Building Society. By 1986,
an art teacher was deployed full-time to manage ARTEXPRESS. From 1989 the Art Gallery
of New South Wales became the principal venue for ARTEXPRESS with satellite exhibitions
in up to six other locations.
In 2001 ARTEXPRESS reached the landmark annual attendance figure of over 500,000
and continues to grow every year. In 2002 a selection of ARTEXPRESS works travelled to
New York and were exhibited at Brooklyn Museum of Art.
ARTEXPRESS has exhibited over 4,700 students' works in the past 15 years. It has
become a much anticipated event in the NSW cultural calendar and continues to
draw national and international acclaim.

Suitability to travel and exhibit in an ARTEXPRESS Exhibition
In its showcase programs, BOSTES & The Arts Unit include HSC works that reflect a range of topics, styles and
forms. These works often include material and styles that are innovative, risk-taking and original in approach.
However, care must be taken to ensure that the content and presentation of the work is appropriate for a general
audience that may include a wide range of community members including younger students.
Some works may be deemed unsuitable in their original form for ARTEXPRESS, irrespective of the marks
they have received. In selecting works, ARTEXPRESS is mindful of certain principles that underpin the national
classification code for film and literature:
Minors should be protected from material likely to harm or disturb them;
Everyone should be protected from exposure to unsolicited material that they find offensive;
It is necessary to take account of community concerns about depictions that condone or incite violence;
and any portrayal of a person in a demeaning manner.
Works may not be considered suitable for showcase events if they contain the following elements:
Offensive language, that is, language likely to cause outrage or disgust
Violence, either real or perceived;
References to the use of illegal drugs;
Sexual references or nudity;
Themes considered inappropriate for a general G rated audience.
Works which are fragile, very large or difficult to handle and works that contain elements in which copyright clearance
cannot be obtained, may also be deemed unsuitable for exhibition in ARTEXPRESS showcases.

The all encompassing database
The Curation processGallery curators from the 10 exhibition sites come to the Murchison
Pavilion to view works nominated for possible ARTEXPRESS selection.
Curators and the ARTEXPRESS Project Officer collaborate to select works
representing all expressive forms, and where possible, works which
represent the candidature of that year’s group of HSC Visual Arts Students.
The process takes 4 days to view and consider all nominated works.
Balancing each exhibitionEach exhibition should balance in terms of being representation of the
candidature. Male/Female; Metro/Regional; All forms presented; Gov/Non-Gov;
And all this while supporting the curatorial themes of the Gallery Director!
Preparing works for travel across NSW
Box making is a fine art….
In 2015, 491 individual boxes were made for 241 selected BOWs.
And off they go……
Packed works are then taken carried by Grace Fine Art
from Murchison Pavilion to the gallery for the installation.
