ABOuT ARTARIAArtaria Editions was founded in 1995 with the express purpose of exploring the music of major contemporaries of Haydn,Mozart and Beethoven. It was an ambitious undertaking, given theobscurityofmanyofthecomposerswechosetochampion,andseventeenyearsonitisintenselysatisfyingtoseetheextenttowhichoureffortshavebeenrecognized.Everyyearseesanincreasein the number of performances of our works worldwide as individuals and orchestras discover for themselves the richness and diversity of the unknown 18th century. Much of the stimulus for this isgeneratedbytheextraordinaryandcontinuingsuccessoftherecordingsmadebyouraffiliateNaxos. On three occasions Naxos has won the coveted “Best 18th-century Orchestral Recording” prizeattheCannesClassicalAwardsandin2002wasafinalistintwocategories.InJanuary2012Artaria Editions and Naxos were awarded the International Domenico Cimarosa Prize in theMusic Publishing and Recording categories at a special ceremony held in at the Teatro Domenico CimarosainAversa,Italy.Theseawardshighlighttheuniqueassociationofpublishinghouseandrecording label that isnotonly responsible for thecreationofan invaluablehistorical resource,but it is also broadening our understanding and appreciation of this critically important period in musical history.
Beingyoung,energeticandambitious,ArtariaEditionsisconstantlyseekingtoexpanditsmusicalhorizons. From concentrating at first on symphonies and concertos we now have a growingcatalogue of chamber works and sacred music. We have also begun to explore music of the early 19thcenturyandin2011wecompletedtherecordingofthecompleteworksforpianoandorchestrabyFerdinandRies,themostambitiousprojectwehaveundertakentodate.AnothermajormilestoneisthepublicationofoneofCimarosa’smostsuccessfuloperas,L’impresarioinangustie,editedbythe Italian Cimarosa scholar Simone Perugini. Dr Perugini’s editions of a new series of overtures by Cimarosaarealsoinpressandtheoperaisexpectedtobepublishedinthesecondquarterof2013.

Cimarosa’s comedy L’Armida imaginara(AE269)wascommissionedfortheTeatrodeiFiorentiniinNaples in 1777. Shortly before the work’s completion the composer received a second commission foranoperaforTeatroValleinRome.Pressedfortime,Cimarosareusedalargechunkofmaterialfrom the overture to L’Armida immaginariainthenewwork,Il ritorno di Don Calendrino(AE267),safein the knowledge that the earlier work could not possibly be known yet in Rome. The relationship between the two overtures is extremely interesting for Cimarosa does not simply borrow material butreworksitinmanysmallbutsignificantdetails.Thesuperiorityofthelaterovertureindeedmakesthe‘original’looklikeasketch.Thus,inspiteofthehistoricalcircumstances,theimpressionone gains is that the overture to L’Armida immaginariawaswritteningreaterhastethanitssequel.Thereuseofthethematicmaterial,therefore,wasasmuchanaestheticdecisionasapragmaticone.

Description: Cimarosa’s dramma giocosointwoacts,Giannina e Bernadone,wasgivenitspremièreatthe Teatro San Samuele in Venice in November 1781 and remains one of his most celebrated comic operas.ExtremelypopularintheeighteenthcenturyinItalyandelsewhere,notableproductionsoftheworkweregiveninVenice(1781),Prague(1783),andinbothTriesteandRoveretoin1784.In 1785 it was produced in Dresden (as Hannchen und Bernadon),BavariaandWarsaw;in1786atDrottningholminSweden,theTeatroSanAngeloinVenice(asIl villano geloso)andinZara;andin1787attheKing’sTheatreintheHaymarket,London.InthenextdecadeitwasstagedinMadrid,Potsdam,Esterháza,Bilbao,Marseille,LisbonandLugano.Productionsweremountedthroughoutin the nineteenth century and at least two revivals were mounted in the twentieth century including thepioneeringbroadcastoftheoperabyItalianStateRadio(RAI)on26July1953.

L’Impresario in Augustie (AE505),asingle-actoperawithlibrettobyGiovanniMariaDiodati,wascomposed for theCarnival seasonof 1786 forTeatroNuovo inNaplesbeforeCimarosa left forSt.Petersburg.TheoperawereperformedalloverEurope,bothinItalianandintranslation.ThepopularityoftheoperaisattestedtotodaybythenumbersofmanuscriptcopiesoftheworkthatarepreservedinlibrariesthroughoutEurope,manyofwhichrevealsubstantialdifferencesintheplotandmusicalstructure,adaptedatthetimetotheexigenciesoftheperformingcompanyandthe taste of the public.
ThepresenteditionbringsbacktolightthefinalversionoftheVienneseversionofL’ImpresarioinAugustewhichwasstagedforthefirsttimeattheBurtheaterin1793,withexplicitreferencemadefromthepartialautographscorebyCimarosaandtheprintedlibrettousedfortheprimain1786,andtwoenormouslydifferentscores,bothwithnewlycomposedmaterialrelatingtotheViennaperformancesof1793.LikeallofCimarosa’sstageworks,itisremarkableforitsvitality,melodicinvention and assured handling of the orchestra.

WhennewsoftheviolentdeathofCaptainJamesCookfinallyreachedEnglandinJanuary1780it created a sensation. Cook’s earlier voyages of discovery had stimulated a huge interest in the exoticworld of the Pacific, andMai, the youngRa’iateanwho arrived in London in 1774withTobiasFurneaux,becameoneof themostcelebratedfigures inLondonduringthetwoyearshespentthere.AtChristmas1785,severalyearsafterMai’sreturntotheSocietyislandsandCook’sdeathinHawaii,CoventGardenstagedanewpantomimeentertainmententitledOmai, or, A Trip Round the World.BycelebratingMaiinmimedactionandsong,thisworkfedthepublicfascinationwiththeprimitivepast–itsrituals,artifactsandcrafts–whilemanagingtoportraythedeathofCook with a theatrical sense of symbolism. William Shield’s score was remarkable for including Polynesian instrumentswhichhadbeenbrought back toEnglandbyLieutenant JamesBurney,one of Furneaux’s officers and the sonof thedistinguishedmusic historianDrCharlesBurney.Although theoriginalorchestralpartshavenot survived,RobertHoskinsandDavidVinehavecleverly reconstructed the core of the work from the vocal score along with the closing apotheosis of CaptainCook.TheeditionisprefacedbyafascinatingintroductiontotheworkbyRobertHoskins,the leading authority on William Shield.
