Artist Statement:

During my graduation period in painting, I always had more inclina-tion towards drawing rather than painting. My works were usuallyfigurative as I enjoyed anatomical drawings. Gradually I began toindividualize elements of Human Anatomy in my works.Regarding my Master’s in Printmaking, I excluded the figures andconcentrated mainly on use of Hands in my works. By using differ-ent hand gestures, I have tried to depict certain occurrences, whichhave influenced me in my life. The conceptualization of my work isderived mainly from incidents, beliefs, situations, traditions, rituals, superstitions etc.

We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admitthe changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.[Maya Angelou]

As long as you have life and breath, believe. Believe forthose who cannot. Believe even if you have stoppedbelieving. Believe for the sake of the dead, for love, tokeep your heart beating, believe. Never give up, neverdespair, let no mystery confound you into the conclusionthat mystery cannot be yours.[Mark Helprin]

If you let people break your spirit and detour you fromyour path, then you have not been true to yourself orthose you're here to touch, those who believe in you.[Allison DuBois]

The concept is simple; to create a Blog for homelessindividuals worldwide. Starting June 6th 2011, 1 Blog willbe created for a homeless individual upon request forfree. The task is simple; after speaking with a homeless personand learning what domain (mywebsitename.com) theywould prefer, one will be purchased for them for $10.Then a Blog will be installed and hosted on a securedweb hosting server provided by Inspired Design &Development, at the cost of $5 as a setup fee. Afterinstallation and setup of both the domain and hosting, thehomeless person will choose from a selection of freeWordPress themes to be used as their Blog. Finally, they will be shown how easy it is to control andupdate their very own Blog by themselves.

The reason is simple; having a Blog opens a world ofpossibilities – literally. Nowadays, our lives and our worldis online. Giving a homeless individual a Blog enablesthem to improve, progress and change their lives. A Bloggives them a global voice to not only state to the world “IAM VISIBLE”, but also the therapeutic practice of ventingtheir frustrations, networking with others locally andabroad, learning from and teaching others how to survive, and telling their raw stories to the world. Their Blog will bethe place to host their resume, create and communicatewith friends and family, showcase their passions whetherit’s writing, drawing, handmade creations or even developa barter network where they can trade items they find onthe streets.#NoBoxBlogs Project doesn’t only deliver a Blog to ahomeless individual, but also office-like software (such asdocuments, spreadsheets and presentation softwareprovided by Google Apps) behind the scenes in whichonly they can access. They can keep track of theircontacts, brainstorming ideas, and other resourcefulnotes to help them improve and progress their currentsituation. Most importantly, they will also be provided anEmail account such as [email protected] potential employers, clients, friends and family cancommunicate via Email. Their Blog will have a Contactpage allowing anyone to Email them at anytime. And ifthey have a bank account, they have the option of addinga Donate button provided by PayPal, where anyone inthe world can donate money to them and help them getback on their feet. How can a homeless person get online to use their Blogor Email? Anyone can get online from almost anywhereat almost anytime. If a homeless person does not have alaptop or phone capable of getting online, they can takeadvantage of computer rooms provided by public librariesor colleges/universities. Thankfully, even some shelters,non-profits and coffee shops have computers accessiblefree of charge. If a homeless person does have a laptopor phone capable of getting online, they can use WiFiservices made available for free at numerous locationssuch as McDonald’s, Burger King and other fast-foodrestaurants; coffee shops such as Starbucks and Peet’sCoffee & Tea, public libraries, FedEx Office locations,Panera Bread Bakery, or befriend a local resident anduse their public WiFi connection. This is only a smallexample! If a homeless person who wishes to have their own Blog,is unable to get online often enough to post their thoughts,w

sideas, resume, articles etc. I will accept letters deliveredto my business address below. All they need to do isgive their name, the name of their domain, article titleand write anything they wish as if they were the onetyping it up. I will copy it word for word onto their veryown Blog. Please send letters to:Inspired Design & Developmentc/o #NoBoxBlogs ProjectPO Box 322Hollywood, CA 90028Who will head the #NoBoxBlogs Project?Allow me to introduce myself – my name is Mooch, and Iam the Founder & Lead Developer of Inspired Design &Development; an international Website & Brandingcompany. For nearly 15 years, I’ve been headingprojects such as designing and developing websites, custom graphic design work such as logos and printmedia for small businesses, non-profits, authors, sportsteams and more. I also give free lifetime support to allclients no matter their project because I appreciate themallowing me to turn my passion into my profession.Without my clients, I would not own a business, and Iwould not be capable of heading the #NoBoxBlogsProject.I am also homeless – since September 1st, 2010, I havebeen living in my car in southern California. I never hada Blog until 3 weeks after living in my car. I started it upto keep track of my progress as I aimed to better my lifeby saving as much money as possible, while continue tobuild my business from the ground up – literally. Before‘Doing It Homeless’ I had a small handful of clients;today I have 70+ in 5 countries on 3 continents. So Ican personally testify how much having a Blog canbenefit a homeless person.Since I started ‘Doing It Homeless’ I have befriendedthousands of people around the world via my Blog,Facebook, Twitter and YouTube (just searchdoingithomeless). I have learned what homelessnessreally looks like, and how a lot of people are eithertemporarily homeless due to the economy, or are downon their luck due to family or medical issues. Givingthem a Blog gives them an outlet unlike any other. Themost popular Blog post I have ever written with 1000s ofviews on my personal Blog, is 'Homelessness + InternetAccess = Change!' I wonder why?I plan on using my own money throughout the entire#NoBoxBlogs Project, but if you agree this simpleconcept can profoundly change real people’s lives, Iencourage you to help support the project in anywayyou can. Whether it’s sharing this article to your friends, family, co-workers or someone you think can help makea difference, or even donating as little as $1 via theSupport The Project page at NoBoxBlogs.com. I am nota non-profit, so I cannot offer you a tax write-off. I amsimply offering you the chance to help a simple guycarry-out a simple idea to homeless people worldwide inhopes to better their lives.

Atlanta photographer, Alan Higgins of Lithium Dreams Photography, is the artist behindThe Lost Girls. What he does is photographs girls who have been and still are homelessand needs help. His aim is to get awareness. This is a situation that a lot of communitieslike to sweep under the carpet, deny that their city has an issue, when everyday thereare homeless shelters full, people living in the woods, along rivers and in abandon build-ings.

Alan specifically focuses on homeless girls, mostly teen or girls in their twenties, someare runaways that have found themselves in situations they never dreamed of, makingdecisions that they never thought they would have make, getting caught up in drugabuse or prostitution. Some are searching for their own identity, some came from abu-sive homes, maybe they got pregnant and do not want to face their parents.

INOCENTE is an intensely personal and vibrant coming ofage feature documentary about a young artist’s fierce de-termination to never surrender to the bleakness of her sur-roundings. At 15, Inocente refuses to let her dream ofbecoming an artist be caged by her life as an undocument-ed immigrant forced to live homeless for the last nineyears.INOCENTE is both a timeless story about the transforma-tive power of art and a timely snapshot of the new face ofhomelessness in America, children. Neither sentimentalnor sensational, INOCENTE will immerse you in the veryreal, day-to-day existence of a young girl who is battling awar that we rarely see. The challenges are staggering, butthe hope in Inocente’s story proves that the hand she hasbeen dealt does not define her, her dreams do.

I was going to write about EarlGrey this time, but somethingelse seemed more important, and perhaps more useful. Andthat something is: secondsteepings.

What, you ask, is a secondsteeping? It's reusing the sametea leaves more than once.Second steepings may evenlead to third steepings; there arekinds of tea that lend themselvesto repeated infusion. Why dothis? Well, obviously it savesmoney, but there are otherreasons as well, as we shall see.

There are a couple ofprerequisites for using a bunchof tea leaves a second time.First requirement is that they bestored in something that won'tadd a flavor of its own to the tealeaves while they sit - a ceramicor glass infuser, or a nylon one,but not metal, and usually paperisn't a good idea either. Thus, the standard metal tea ball thatmany people use to make loosetea is not a good storage vesselfor the leaves, and it's better todo the first brewing in somethingother than metal, too, so that nometallic flavors intrude. Paper, including tea bags, has a bit of aflavor, even unbleached, all-w

Tea

natural, organic paper. So teabags don't do well on secondsteepings. Mesh tea "bags" liketea pyramids are OK, though -those are usually nylon, ratherthan paper. The secondprerequisite is that the firstbrewing not be in too high atemperature for too long. Ifyou're making your first pot orcup of tea, use water a coupleof degrees cooler than younormally would, and stick to theminimum recommendedsteeping time. If you normallypour boiling water right overyour leaves, pour the boilingwater first and wait a second ortwo before putting the tealeaves in.

If you're not going to make yoursecond pot or cup of tea rightaway, it's not a bad idea torefrigerate the leaves. Tea hasa lot of natural resistance togerms and bugs, but it's notinfinite, and your tea will besafer in the fridge. It'll also besafe from getting knocked offthe counter

The concept that grewinto Habitat for Human-ity International wasborn at Koinonia Farm,a small, interracial,

Christian community outside of Americus, Geor-gia. Koinonia Farm was founded in 1942 by farm-er and biblical scholar Clarence Jordan.

The Fullers first visited Koinonia in 1965. Theyhad recently left a successful business and anaffluent lifestyle in Montgomery, Alabama to be-gin a new life of Christian service.

At Koinonia, Jordan and Fuller developed theconcept of "partnership housing." The conceptcentered on those in need of adequate shelterworking side by side with volunteers to build sim-ple, decent houses.

Invisible People TV is a vlog thatintroduces the homeless as peo-ple and not a stereotype. Accord-ing the the founder : “I once hearda story about a homeless man onHollywood Blvd who really thoughthe was invisible. But one day akid handed the man a Christianpamphlet. The homeless guy was

shocked and amazed, “what! You can see me? Howcan you see me? I’m invisible!”For years I’ve used the lens of a television camera totell the stories of homelessness and the organizationstrying to help. That was part of my job. The reportswere produced well and told a story, but the storiesyou see on this site are much different. These are thereal people, telling their own, very real stories…unedited, uncensored and raw.

The purpose of this vlog is to make the invisible visible.I hope these people and their stories connect with youand don’t let go. I hope their conversations with mewill start a conversation in your circle of friends.”

The Do Foundationholds the essential beliefthat ALL PEOPLE, nomatter their walk in life, are entitled to dignity, respect and the opportu-nity to realize or regain alife of self-sufficiencythrough community in-

volvement and assistance as opposed to living in anunsheltered state of homelessness.

The Mission of the DO Foundation is to connect di-rectly with the homeless for a personal account oftheir immediate needs and to generate communitysupport in conjunction with implementing cost-effec-tive programs to aid and assist them with meetingthese needs. Homelessness is indiscriminate. Andlikewise, the DO Foundation will remain open to theneeds of those who are homeless whether their stateof homelessness is to due to financial hardship, men-tal health related issues, addiction, flight from abusivecircumstances, or lack of support as is often the casewith Veterans and former inmates transitioning backinto the community.

The Pavement is committed to publishing inde-pendent advice as well as hard-hitting and enter-taining reportage, tailored to a homelessreadership within the UK via our regional maga-zines and UK-wide website. We aim to provideand publicise appropriate information that is ob-jective, timely and relevant on a range of advisoryand practical services available to homeless peo-ple, as well as news on the issues impacting thehomeless and dispossessed from across the UK.Our ultimate goal is to help reduce short-termhardship amongst our readers and longer term toprovide them with information to enable them toguide their own futures.

The Pavement exists because there was nothinglike it, but it fulfils a need.

The Pavement is a small charity, founded in thespring of 2005. We distribute The Pavement inLondon, Scotland and the West Midlands, and weplan to launch in other regions. In London alone,we deliver 4,000+ copies of The Pavement toover 70 hostels, day centres, homeless surgeries,soup-runs and libraries. By using volunteer jour-nalists and homelessness sector professionals,as well as work from the country’s best cartoon-ists (many of them Private Eye contributors),we’ve achieved a balance of news, features, hu-mour and service listings unlike other publications.

Our journalists - trained professionals - cover thenews from the streets or news affecting thestreets, and we often deal with topics ignored bythe mainstream press. Alongside this, other pro-fessionals provide features on health, foot care, legal advice and life in hostels, with the back pag-es given over to The List, a regularly updated di-rectory of homeless services.
