What is Sustainable Living?

• Sustainable living means living with an increasing awareness of how one’s daily choices effect the natural environment and taking action to reduce the impact.

• Overpopulation results into over consumption that depletes natural resources, making them unavailable for future generations and reduces the ability of the land to process the waste.

What is Ecological Footprint?

Page 5: Art of green_living (bnhs) by Dr.S.Vaylure of CEC

How big is Humanity Footprint?

“The report reveals humanity’s Ecological Footprint has more than doubled since 1966. In 2007, the most recent year for which data are available, humanity used the equivalent of1.5 planets to support its activities.

Even with modest UN projections for population growth, consumption and climate change, by 2030 humanity will need the capacity of two Earths to absorb carbon dioxide waste and keep up with natural resource consumption.

The figures released in the report illustrate the scope of the challenges humanity faces not only for preserving biodiversity, but also for halting climate change and meeting human development aspirations, such as reducing worldwide hunger and poverty.” (Source WWF, UK)

Greening at Home: Save

• Mumbai’s water supply comes from 6 reservoir lakes : Vihar lake, Tulsi lake, Tansa lake, Upper Vaitarna, Lower Vaitarna, and Bhatsa.

• Leakages and illegal water connections together account for the loss of 30 – 50% of water supply.

• The supply per day is now about 3,450 million liters, with a demand gap of at least 400 million.

• Per capita supply is dropping to an alarming 90l per person and day.

• Water therefore is now rationed in Mumbai, with residential water supply cut by 15% and commercial water supply cut by 30% for this season.

Where does the water come from?

• “ Jungle Naadi ki Maa hai” alias Sanjay Gandhi National Park and Tansa Wildlife Sancturay

• Groundwater can take a human lifetime just to traverse a mile.

• Lack of open grounds in Mumbai

• If all the world's water were fit into a gallon jug, the fresh water available for us to use would equal only about one tablespoon.
