"The centerpiece is a collection of futuristic, vertical sinks with water cascading down from the top. "It's a high-tech water system that is activated by placing hands close to the surface," says Hoffman. "The magic lies in taking something banal like a typical sink and reinventing it."

Art Meadow was commissioned by Bloomberg Business Week to produce a new vision for the typical corporate bathroom - and re-envision it as a social hub for employees to share.

Bath Haus liberates employees from the typical corporate bathroom and the drudgeries of a normal work day by creating a new flexibility of public use. The bathroom takes on a whole new meaning as a meeting place. Socializing for even just a few minutes knocks down barriers, encourages collaboration, bridges differences and moves ideas forward.

Bath Haus is defined by a visually striking form that begs users to interact with it, and in turn, with their fellow employees. The form dramatically rises from the floor as a cluster of colorful protrusions. Closer investigation reveals that the projections replace traditional sinks as hand-washing stations.

Bath Haus is composed of a high-tech water system that is activated by placing hands close to the surface. Water temperature can be adjusted by simply rotating your hand left or right, like a traditional faucet. Water use is also reduced up to 70% from traditional manual taps, fostering ecological sustainability at the same time.

The bathroom itself is rearranged around a large communal room, with a series of secure powder rooms for individuals that branch off of the main space. The division between Men's and Women's bathrooms is dissolved to encourage communication between the whole team.

There aren't many things more precise than a group of German Engineers.

The trick is to balance structure with content - here is a sneak peak of a website we're designing for a German engineering firm that combines a very German, super-defined structure and the flexibility to mix content with nice big images.KNIPPERS HELBIG WEBSITE / WEDNESDAY JANUARY 22, 2013 PAGE 66

Flagshipstore Peek & Cloppenburg Cologne . Germany

Double curved shell structure clad in planar glass panes

The architect Renzo Piano de-signed a glazed dome for the textile company „Peek & Cloppen-burg“. It comprises an imbricated skin consisting of 6,800 individual glass panes.

The five-storey department store in the inner-city Cologne is entirely wrapped into the free-formed fa-cade shell. The vertically arranged trusses of wood slats and the hori-zontally running facade tubes are linked to the shell structure by diagonally stretching cables. The number of wood slats are graded from floor to floor according to the strain. The trusses of wood slats made of Siberian larch were completely prefabricated. Sup-porting the shell structure on just a few rigid positions of the carcass enables an almost complete iso-lation from distortion forces. On the forth floor the façade shell is attached by consoles. In order to maintain the impressive effect of the facade also inside, the ceilings do not touch the glass skin.

Historically, bodegas have served as social gathering centers for neighborhoods, going far beyond super markets and grocery stores by offering informal services like job connections and advice on finding apartments. Unfortunately, New York City's bodegas have been closing by the hundreds over the past few years, not being able to compete with big chain stores like CVS and Duane Reade. Business Insider published a startling statistic that "in 2010 on a 33-block stretch of Broadway alone there were 137 store closures."

Where can we find a new home for bodegas and reinvigorate them as social hubs? The interesting thing is that we as New Yorkers are closest together in the subway, and yet subway cars are actually the most unsocial spaces in the city, everyone does their best to ignore each other.

BQDEGA mashes the two together - creating a bodega within a NYC subway car - to be inserted on any of the MTA lines. By inserting a bodega into a subway car, it is possible to recreate that social engine that used to be the center of bodegas, and also improve the NYC subway by offering a new mobile place to shop, gossip and gather.

Polar Inertia is an online journal that explores the networks that define the contemporary city. Entering its 10th year, Polar Inertia needed a new home on the iPad that let the contributor's work shine in its fullest. Working closely with the PI team, Art Meadow developed a fluid interface that let the user seamlessly explore projects and gave the photo essays the center stage. The end result creates a powerfully flexible structure for Polar Inertia Journal that is adaptable from issue to issue.

Tree Haus is nothing like the static play-sets that litter parks and backyards around the country. Children climb into Tree Haus from various entries, ladders and escape-hatches, to a magical interior that feels like a top-secret club house. From the interior, children move through the hollowed-core to the lookout nest, then back down through the enormous red fruit that pierce through the canopy, and plummet down the curling slide to the gigantic blades of grass and springy mushrooms around the trunk of Tree Haus.

The tiny footprint of Tree Haus unfolds its full potential through a complex series of entrances, passageways and lookouts, layering play space on top of itself to form a dense and engaging experience for children of all ages.

Tree Haus is also expandable: multiple units can be connected together through rope bridges and hidden canopy tunnels, into sprawling aggregations that fit into any setting, a tight urban center, or large suburban playspace.

Two newlywed's bought their first home in Los Angeles; a 1950's bungalow in need of a facelift.

Pixel Haus utilizes a simple material, the tile, beyond a traditional flat application to craft a 3-D canvas for living. The tiles provide a beautiful surface. Simple in their arrangement and powerful in effect, this project takes a traditional tile application one step beyond by covering the entire studio and patio, and manipulating the envelop to create a perfect grid.

Person Haus is a work in progress, to illustrate a new way for architecture and fashion to be merged. Architecture and fashion share similar expectations from users, to shelter them from the elements, and communicate a person's style to the world. Yet the two are inextricably separated. Until now.

There is a tension between the rigid geometry of the cube, and the nature surrounding it. To further exacerbate the relationship between the two, the cube is lightly placed on a hill, no longer vertical but tilted, remaining in place by friction.

Upon entering the structure, there is a large living space with a work area, kitchenette, and a large table for lavish dinners. The circulation wraps around the outside of the cube, leaving the central space empty to accentuate the height and the views to the outside.

We should all be NIABYs when it comes to the disposal of hazardous waste. In 1981, SUPERFUND was signed into existence as the federal government's piggy bank and program to identify, remove and remediate contaminated sites across the nation. Almost 30 years later, Superirresponsible examines our response and responsibility to our seeping industrial, manufacturing and technological wasteland - in everyone's backyard for generations to come.

We looked at SUPERFUND, the federal government's program to clean up the nation's uncontrolled hazardous waste sites. Through my research, along with Andrew Clark, we start to comprehend how, where, and why the consequences of our seeping industrial past and present, legislation included, are sticking around for the next few generations.

Manhattan Airport was bit of culture jamming created to satirize urban development and draw attention to the shortcomings of our urban infrastructure. With headquarters on the nonexistent 58th floor of the Woolworth Building the Foundation became an instant social media phenomenon. On the day it launched it was tweeted repeatedly by David Pogue of the Times resulting in enough hits to crash GoDaddy's biggest server. Since then the project has been featured in Fast Company, The Guardian, Gawker and ABC News to name a few.

Year 2008. Massive multi-national corporations dictate the world's markets. These corporations are set up as money-making machines, and navigate the new millennium with omnipotence over states, and most certainly over individuals themselves. Individuals form small cells of the corporations, and each person has no real understanding of how their efforts affect the whole. Hierarchy is created in such a way that individuals are blinded to the fact that they are pieces within these mega-constructs, leaving them with an overwhelming sense of ignorance, but a nagging feeling of something colossal looming over their heads.

Year 2010. Two years into a crippling recession that has reached every corner of the globe. The largest corporations are on their death beds. New laws are passed and stimulus packages keep the corporations on life support, but this is just a temporary fix. A new system begins to emerge, a system called Socialopolis, where each person acts as their own corporation, using their talents to create profits, investing in themselves to learn new tools, and following their wants and desires to create new opportunities for themselves. Each person becomes a valuable link in the system by becoming an active participant in their own future.

Year 2013. Office towers are no longer the home of innovation and work. New York City recognizes an unmet demand for a new infrastructure - a social infrastructure. Much like the largest public works of the past; subways, bridges, parks and highways, Socialopolis is based on basic human needs and is designed to improve each individuals life. Pieces begin to come together. LIVING needs to be combined with WORKING which is combined with PLAYING to create a 360 social environment. The proximities created by mixing these pieces together short circuits the most important and valuable component of the new economy - connections between people.

Year 2020. The sixth borough of New York City is born. The first section of the wall is completed - Socialopolis. Inhabitants flock to move in and set up shop. Before the first section is even complete, new sections break ground in other cities. A new continental system is established, a system based on empowering each individual to live life to their fullest. Socialopolis tackles the unbending and often hostile attitude of architecture towards its inhabitants by putting architecture back into the driving seat for social purposes.

Year 2030. A new social order is reached. Society is elevated by each individual. People continue to operate to their fullest extent by living in an environment that caters to their needs and creates mixing spaces for knowledge transfer. Socialopolis becomes the new norm for living and working - the ultimate mixed-use structure.

The artist, after searching for years, finally finds the perfect space. Marking this as the center of his new home, he unpacks his thoughts and slowly begins forming four walls around his rock. Four entrances keep him from feeling claustrophobic. The walls are experience catchers.

As he runs out of space he builds a second ring of walls just outside of the first. The thickness is variable.

...After some time, the house has expanded to several hundred concentric series of walls, forming ever-longer galleries for him to explore himself.

We detected an unfortunate misfit between people and architecture by observing how an aging society becomes disabled by buildings - and we set out to change that. With Boom we partnered with a national heathcare developer and twenty renowned architecture firms to produce a new vision for aging. Once published, the response was immediate and powerful: over 200 mainstream and web-based publications ran features about the new community.
