Guidance on minimum requirements
Examples of possible Unit structure
There is a minimum amount of artwork required to achieve the Assessment Standards for the National 4 and National 5 Art & Design: Expressive Activity Units
3 drawings/studies2 development ideas
Within the above there should be a minimum of 2 media used.
EVALUATION Demonstrate awareness of basic strengths and weaknesses in the work. Show evidence of reflection and creative decision-making.
There is a minimum amount of artwork required to achieve the Assessment Standards for the National 4 and National 5 Art & Design: Design Activity Units
Produce relevant investigative material and examples of design work (market research). 2 development ideas
EVALUATION Distinguish between successful and less successful ideas Show evidence of reflection and creative decision-making. Evaluative comment could appear as annotations on the development work or during discussions with the assessor.
The National 4 Art & Design: Added Value Unit Outcome 1
‘Plan how to adapt and refine the idea to express the theme/stimuli’.
Garden still-life. I started by wanting vegetables and man-made objects in my picture together. I wanted to show contrast with these things. I used watercolours because I can be neat and I can get lots of different colours. I chose the yellow fabric for the background to make the things stand out. I like the way I made the watering can look like metal. I should have added more tomatoes to make the picture more colourful.
‘Reflection: 50 to 80 words or equivalent could be sufficient to meet this requirement’.
The National 4 Art & Design: Added Value Unit Outcome 2
‘Plan how to adapt and refine the idea and how to produce an effective solution’.
‘Reflection: 50 to 80 words or equivalent could be sufficient to meet this requirement’.
Outdoor Clock DesignI wanted my design to be based on something natural and organic. I eventually chose to develop the image of an insect and simplify it. I like my design because it looks modern and unusual at the same time. This would make it appeal to more people who would like to see it in their town centre. I would make it better by increasing the size of the actual clock-face and include numerals. This would make the design more practical.

The National 4 Art & Design: Course
Verification of Art & Design National Qualifications
Main Aims of Approach
Ensure continued credibility of Art & Design National
Qualifications
Facilitate the partnership approach of Curriculum for
Excellence
Share knowledge more widely about National Standards
Increase confidence in assessment decisions
Support flexible delivery of qualifications
Key Aspects
Art & Design Verification will be undertaken using Visiting
Verifiers
Complete or interim evidence may be used for verification
Verification will be undertaken by the Principal Verifier, Senior
Team Leader and a team of approx 38 Visiting Verifiers
Key Aspects
The range of outcomes are:
Accepted Accepted* Not Accepted
Principal Verifier (PV) will sample all reports/Outcomes during Round 1
Thereafter, where a centre is Accepted* or Not Accepted, the
report/Outcome must be authorised by the PV
Outcome feeds into the center's priority rating for the next year
Follow-up action will be reviewed by PV
– Holds lifted once PV determines that the issue has been resolved– Usual certification date deadline will apply
Verification OutcomesAcceptedThe approaches to assessment at that level are valid. The assessment judgements at that level are valid and reliable and consistent with the National Standards.
Accepted* There are some recommended actions that relate to the approaches to assessment or the assessment judgements, but overall the assessment judgements are in line with National Standards (i.e. certification can proceed)
Not Accepted indicates that either:the approach to assessment; and/orthe centre’s assessment judgements
Is not in line with national standards and that this warrants a hold being placed on certification until the required corrective action is taken and verified by SQA.

UNIT ASSESSMENTMarked as pass/fail
COURSE ASSESSMENTMarked at A-D
These 2 images were taken from the study of Van Gogh for Outcome 1. They help clarify the context for the Course Assessment but do not contribute to the marks.
Development stage: There are 36 marks available for this Section.
This part of the portfolio provides evidence of the further development of a single line of expressive enquiry and the candidate’s ability to show a considered response to an expressive theme/stimuli.
♦ Further development of the original expressive idea (0-12 marks)
♦ Demonstrating a considered response to developing their expressive theme/stimuli (0-12 marks)
♦ Applying the visual elements effectively to communicate their understanding of the expressive theme/stimuli (0-12 marks)
Expressive artwork: final piece There are 36 marks available for this Section. The final piece of expressive art work should show clear visual continuity with the original expressive idea and development work and the effective refinement and realisation of the development idea in 2D or 3D formats, as appropriate. Marks will be awarded for:
♦ Maintaining visual continuity with the original idea and development work and demonstrating a creative response to the expressive theme/stimuli (0-12 marks)
♦ Demonstrating effective refinement and realisation of the final piece (0-24 marks)
Evaluation: There are 8 marks available for this Section. In the expressive evaluation the candidate will reflect on and evaluate the visual qualities of the final piece of expressive art work. Marks in the evaluation will be awarded for:
♦ Describing and explaining their choice and use of materials, techniques and/or technology and the visual elements (0-4 marks) ♦ Expressing supported personal opinions on the visual qualities of the piece of expressive artwork (0-4 marks)

These 3 images were taken from the study of ‘Creative Packaging’ for Outcome 1. They help clarify the context for the Course Assessment but do not contribute to the marks.
Development stage: There are 36 marks available for this Section.
This part of the portfolio provides evidence of the further development of a single line of design enquiry and the candidate’s ability to show a considered response to the requirements of the design brief.
♦ Further development of the original design idea (0-12 marks)
♦ Demonstrating a considered response to the opportunities and requirements of the design brief (0-12 marks)
♦ Using design elements effectively in response to the design brief requirements (0-12 marks)
Design SolutionThere are 36 marks available for this Section. The final design solution should show clear visual continuity with the original design idea and development work and the effective realisation of the development idea in 2D or 3D formats, as appropriate. Marks will be awarded for:
♦ Maintaining visual continuity with the original idea and development work and demonstrating a creative response to the design brief/design area requirements (0-12 marks)
♦ Demonstrating effective refinement and realisation of the final design solution (0-24 marks)
Evaluation: There are 8 marks available for this Section. In the design evaluation the candidate will reflect on and evaluate their design solution against the requirements of the design brief/design area. Marks in the evaluation will be awarded for: ♦ Explaining the choice and use of design materials, techniques and technology and function /purpose as appropriate with reference to the design brief requirements (0-4 marks) ♦ Expressing supported personal opinions on the effectiveness of their design solution with reference to the design brief requirements (0-4 marks)
To Conclude……. Units are assessed Pass/Fail by centres and subject to External
Verification by SQA
Standards remain the same as for previous qualifications
Assessors indicate formally when a candidate has passed each Assessment Standard and keep the evidence available for External Verification
External Verification focusses on a centre’s assessment judgements: are they valid and in line with National Standards?
Verifiers only look at Unit assessment work and the centre’s assessment of that work
To Conclude……. External Verification is intended to be supportive – colleagues should
see it as a positive experience which contributes to maintaining national standards and the integrity of Art & Design
Centres should not include any Course Assessment with Unit work presented to Verifiers
Relevant contextual evidence from Units may be included with the Course Assessment evidence
Contextual evidence does not contribute to the marks given to Course Assessment work
Centres should NOT send Units along with Course Assessment work
