COMPOSITIONThe plan, placement, or arrangement of the

elements in an art work.

Page 3: ART DESIGN AND STYLE TERMS. COMPOSITION The plan, placement, or arrangement of the elements in an art work

BALANCEThe way the elements of art are arranged to create a

feeling of stability in a work. The equalization of elements in a work of art. Balance in design is similar to balance in physics. A large shape close to the center can be balanced by a small shape close to the edge. A large light toned shape will be balanced by a small dark toned shape (the darker the shape the heavier it appears to be)

CONTRASTA large difference between two things: hot and

cold, green and red, light and shadow. A way of putting elements of art next to each other to stress the differences between them. It can direct attention to points of interest.

COMPLEMENTARY COLORS• Colors that are opposite each

other on the color wheel (example: red and green).

• High contrast of complementary colors creates a vibrant look especially when used at full saturation.

• Can be tricky to use in large doses, but work well when you want something to stand out.

HARMONY• Agreement• Pleasing to the eye• way of combining elements of art to accent their

CLEAN / FLAT Refinement—elements look

like they belong & benefit / complement design as a whole.

Spacing - images aren’t cluttered in any way

• Alignment – using a “grid” system. Smooth and unbroken lines are visually pleasing.

• Typography--limited/appropriate use of fonts

• Color— light, neutral and limited color palette

Minimalistic design. Crisp edges, bright colors

and 2D / flat illustrations.• Decorative elements are

unnecessary clutter. If aspect serves no functional purpose, it's a distraction

• Bright, contrasting colors make illustrations pop from backgrounds / grab attention.

• Images like icons can easily be understood.
