art deco chair design assignment
DESCRIPTION
This was a working presentation aimed at S3 pupils (14yrs) during a PRODUCT DESIGN class. They were working through the design process and it ended with them testing out various types of chairs in terms of ergonomics etc. Feel free to chop and change it...TRANSCRIPT
CHAIR DESIGN
Identify your market …
Who would go to the Merchant City for lunch?
Who would be attracted to an Art Deco style café?

Lifestyle board
CHAIR DESIGN
So why is this important?
• The mood of a product is the feeling or emotion aroused in us when we see that product first
• Some products appeal to certain people when they are in a particular mood
• This can lead to impulse buying
CHAIR DESIGN
Task:
Collect images from newspapers, magazines, internet, , brochures (also samples of textiles and fabrics if possible
The result should be a snapshot of the intended market group’s life
CHAIR DESIGN
Lets develop our picture of the user into words . . .
CHAIR DESIGNTime to identify all the important DESIGN ISSUES and fully analyse the BRIEF . . .
CHAIR DESIGN
CHAIR DESIGN
Once we IDENTIFY Design Issues, we must
JUSTIFY our CHOICE . . .
WHY?
Aesthetics . . .
CHAIR DESIGN
AestheticsIt is important that the chair has an Art Deco style so that it fits in with its environment.
It is important that the Aesthetics of the chair demonstrates high quality not only to reflect the style of Art Deco but to be attractive to the user who finds products of high quality appealing.

Task: We need to look at all our Design Issues and
JUSTIFY why we think they are important . . .
CHAIR DESIGN
RESEARCH• Have your Mind Map beside you . . .
• Start with one Design Issue . . .
Ergonomics
Our starting point is our user.Once we know who they are then we can start designing for their size

Today . . .• We are going to Test our chairs in terms of
Physiological Ergonomics
• Work with a partner and help each other investigate Ergonomics
• Record our conclusions as Research
• Look at the Psychological Aspects of Ergonomics
CHAIR DESIGN
BRIEFA new restaurant/wine bar in the area
of Glasgow has been designed using an
style. The owners are looking for a
which will compliment this theme. They will need both
dining and occasional chairs.
The chairs should be able to be manufactured by a local
furniture supplier.
Develop a design for one type of chair and produce a prototype of your design.

Task…
• Test your chair with your partner
• One person TESTS while the other RECORDS their answers on the Physiology worksheet
• Swap about so that you can test the other chair
• If you finish early go onto the Psychological Aspects worksheet
