PAINTING AS SCULPTURE Beginning with a rectangular surface, you will learn ways to subvert, deconstruct, and reassemble it to create a three-dimensional form that breaks from the tradition of the rectangle. Tuesdays 10am–1pm May 19–Jun 23 Wendy De Gros $235

PAINTING: GEOMETRIC ABSTRACTION This painting course follows the roots of early cubist-inspired abstraction. The focus will be on compositional formats such as stripes, rectangles and the grid. Some painting experience required. Wednesdays 10am–1pm May 20–Jun 24 Xane St Phillip $235

PAINTING: NATURE AND THE SUBLIME Students experiment with the application of paint on a surface to create atmosphere, mood and emotion. Some painting experience required. Fridays 2–5pm May 22–Jun 26 Xane St Phillip $235

PAINTING: BAUHAUS METHOD & STYLE Learn how all design begins with a strong and dynamic abstract composition in this course. Compositional studies are derived from sources such as nature, music or architecture as well as geometry. Thursdays 10am–1pm May 21–Jun 25 Xane St Phillip $235

PAINTING: STILL LIFE This painting course looks at the history of still life traditions and focuses on the evolution of the genre in a contemporary context. By exploring how objects relate to each other in space, students learn to experiment with form and representation. Thursdays 2–5pm May 21–Jun 25 Neil McClelland $235

PAINTING: COLOUR AND GESTURE Students work on colour exercises sequentially, from black and white through the complementary colours to a full palette of colour by the end of the course. This introductory course focuses on several quick and direct studies using paint on paper as opposed to making a “finished” painting. Thursdays 6–9pm May 21–Jun 25 Todd Lambeth $235

PAINTING: STUDIO CRITIQUE Are you looking for feedback or a new direction in your work? This three-hour weekly session gives participants the opportunity to bring in paintings, either completed or in progress, for a group critique. The Studio Critique is an excellent way to engage in a critical dialogue about your work with peers and an experienced facilitator on a weekly basis. PAINTING: FIFTY FAVOURITE THINGS The six-week class explores colour, objects in a still life, and images, such as family photographs or found photos. Students will be encouraged to create a series (as many as 50) from the original source material. Water media such as watercolour, gouache or acrylic paint can be used. DRAWING AS MEDITATION Simple line drawing is an excellent way to relax and focus, and consequently, a perfect way to develop a daily meditation practice. PAINTING AS PRACTICE: FROM IDEA TO EXHIBITION The instructor will provide guidance on composition, technical application of paint, and connecting the ideas with the method and process of painting. PRINCIPLES OF JAPANESE DESIGN A quintessential component of Japanese design is Notan, the interaction between dark and light (positive and negative or object and ground). IMAGE TRANSFER You will learn a range of techniques to transfer your photographs onto printmaking paper, acrylic skins and other surfaces that you can incorporate into your paintings, collage or mixed media artwork. ABSTRACT COMPOSITION This weekend workshop will introduce you to a variety of approaches to abstract design, from using very simple and basic forms to more complex compositions involving layering, patterns and scale. WATERCOLOUR PLAY This afternoon workshop introduces you to working with watercolour through two simple exercises. The focus is on ‘play’ as opposed to making finished paintings. ENCAUSTICS The unique properties of encaustic allow a wide range of painting techniques and surface manipulation. SCULPTURAL FELTING This two-day workshop explores needle felting as a contemporary medium for creating small sculptures. INSTALLATION ART In this course, students will take on projects specially designed to help them gain an understanding of how installation art compares with object-making in general. With special consideration for the inclusion of space and the environment, projects examine a range of important notions, such as seriality and modularity, site specificity, collection and taxonomy, intervention, and deconstruction. OFF-LOOM WEAVING Students will learn to make abstract woven images without a traditional loom. Techniques include building a structure, choosing materials, using crochet and knotting, adding found materials/objects and choosing a mode of display. Thursdays 6–9pm May 21–Jul 2 Anne Steves $235

DRAWING: THE ABSTRACT IMAGE Explore the transition from representational drawing to making compositions made of marks, shapes, forms and textures that are inherently interesting as completed works of art. Tuesdays 6–9pm May 19–Jun 23 Wendy Welch $235

URBAN SKETCHING This course focuses on drawing things you see as you make your way through the city including architecture, interiors of buildings, people, gardens and parks. Fridays 10am–1pm May 22–Jun 26 Neil McClelland $235

TABLEAU PHOTOGRAPHY This six-week course explores “tableau” or set-up elements within photography. Working with models, lighting, still life and props, you will produce narrative images that investigate colour, light and storytelling. THE ALTERED IMAGE This course teaches students expressive techniques to artificially age, bleach, distress and transfer photographic images. This is a hands-on class, not a digital class. BLACK & WHITE PHOTOGRAPHY: ANALOGUE PROCESSES This course is an introduction to analogue film-based photography, which is re-emerging as a distinct fine art medium. Modern photo chemistry is more environmentally safe than ever. You will learn to make your own film developing solutions using only instant coffee, washing soda and a bit of vitamin C, a process you can safely use in your own kitchen. OUTSIDER ART This course offers an introduction to an unrestrained creativity that exists outside the mainstream of established art. It explores the origins and art created by self-taught obsessives, untrained visionaries, eccentric recluses, psychiatric patients, and other indirectly related fringes beyond the imposed margins of society, cultural influences or academic acceptance. WRITE AWAY! This class will help start you on the path to becoming the writer you want to be. In these six sessions, you’ll learn ways to overcome writing anxieties, fears, lack of inspiration, time constraints or mere inexperience.
