NZPPA Salon des Refusés 2015
This is a new exhibition that the WSA will be sponsoring in
April 2015. We have invited all the artist to choose and
display one piece of art work which they entered into this
year’s New Zealand Painting and Printmaking Awards.
This exhibition will allow the public to see some of the
works of art that were not chosen in the final 50. It will also
give the artists the satisfaction of displaying these pieces
for all the public to see.
Yes, there is a criteria and it is
that each artist who entered is
allowed one of the pieces that
they entered into the
competition. Each artist has to
be a member of the Waikato
Society of Arts and follow the
same criteria that was placed
on the works when they
entered it. In other words they
cannot enlarge it or shrink it in
any manner.
We will have the Opening night Nibbles and refreshments
for this exhibition held in the ArtsPost Gallery on 23rd of
April 2015 at 5:30pm. We have reserved all three of the
ArtsPost Galleries for this exhibition which will be 24th of
April till 1st of June 2015.
We are inviting all to attend the opening night and visit the
exhibition. Come look at the wide diversity that the
prestigious NZPPA brings and understand why it was such
a hard choice for our judge to choose only 50 works out of
370 this year. A very difficult choice I might add. You will
begin to understand what a diverse and amazing group of
artistic people you have in this wonderful country.
Come and look, admire, discuss, and possibly purchase a
piece for a space that you need to fill. All the work will
have a sales price and you will be able to pick it up on 1st
of June to take it home. This event will be amazing and a
must see. Plan to put it on your calendar.
With Sadness and kind thoughts
Condolences to Susan Mitchell and family for
the loss of John Mitchell of whom passed away on
Wednesday, 1st of April 2015. If you would like to contact
her email is as follows: [email protected]
CONGRADULATIONS! NZPPA 2015 PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD Brigid Allan’s painting called “Blacker Than the Night”, Acrylic on Board.
I was lucky enough to catch up with her to ask her a few questions about herself and her interest in art.
Brigid told me that her interest in art began when she was about 10 years old. She had a neighbour that gave children art lessons. It was from this neighbour
Kathy Bagg, a very good landscape painter that brought out the interest in art and painting in general. She has been nurturing this talent for years and has recently received a honours in Media Arts at Wintec in Hamilton. Her focus is on Rural New Zealand Culture and environment.
She has been painting professionally for the past 13 years and has managed to sell about 9-11 paintings a year. The work is normally sold during the exhibitions she has entered them in.
She loves painting a painting on top of a painting. Where she can find a balance between the figurative and the imaginative. She loves to watch the people look at her painting from a far and find something in it. Then travel closer to the work and find something totally different in the strokes and work itself. Art is definitely in the eye of the beholder and everyone will see something different in each piece they admire.
Brigid said that this NZPPA 2015 was extremely diverse in the subject matter and types of art work displayed. She was fascinated by the wide variety of art works involved in one exhibition and how beautifully they were displayed.
Brigid received a gift certificate from Gordon Harris for $200. She wishes to Thank Gordon Harris for this generous donation and the people for their support on their People’s Choice.

ART SCHOOL NEWS – By Anne Kalin
March / April
The summer term has finished, with many interesting pieces
of art work coming from our artists. Watching students im-
prove their skills is rewarding for the tutors. Children’s holiday
programmes will be running over the holidays. These offer
endless possibilities for experiments with a variety of materi-
als.
My daughter gave me a beautifully illustrated book on Al-
phonse Muncha. ‘This showcases Art Nouveau masterpiec-
es. This is a reference book that charts the life and work of a
man who epitomized Parisian art during the fin-de-siècle. It
explores his work which dazzled the commercial world and
documents his success as an avant garde artist.’ It is a mag-
nificent book.
NEXT TERM RECOMMENCES 28th
April Tuesday.
There will be no art classes on Monday 27th as this is
now the ANZAC holiday. Monday classes will start on
4th May.
Enrollments have started already with one class full. So
be in quick!
I have recently been able to participate in an Art clas-
ses after 28 year of administration. I can honestly say
it’s wonderful. Thanks goes to all our tutors for making
the art school such a great experience. Two new clas-
ses next term.
Tuesdays 6.10-8.10 Drawing Doodles and Sketch
books. This will introduce the beginner to exercise
and how to start a Sketch book. Sketch books are won-
derful and to my mind far more evocative of a time or
place than a photograph. She is interested in encour-
aging others to take up drawing as it is fascinating and
easily accessible art technique. Carril Karr will be the
tutor.
Carril has always had an interest in art and is mainly a
printmaker. Carril started at the WSA art school in the
1990’s She then enrolled in the Learning Connexions
course in Art and Creativity and completed this with an
Honours Diploma.
Wednesday 9.30-11.30 Watercolour for beginners
this will induce the beginner to a series of exercises
that will teach you how to paint with this lovely medium.
Paulette Bruns is the tutor. Paulette’s friendly manner
will encourage the beginner and set them on the path
of exploration.
Next Level Gallery
We are on the look out for New Exhibi-
tions. If you are a WSA Member and
you have your own art hanging around
let it be exposed. For only an $80 fee
you will open the gallery for two weeks
to your own creations and discover the
wonder of selling your art to the public. All proceeds are
yours minus a 20% gallery fee. Have an Opening for
your exhibition and invite everyone. It is Exposure! You
will love it. Join the fun and Show off your talent. Open-
ings are now available. Call the office today.
Morrinsville—the Cow Project
One of our tutors, Christine Melchoir has had the
privilege of being invited to paint a cow for the Mor-
risville “Cow project” which is beautifying the town
and putting Morrinsville on the map. Christine paint-
ed the cow for Cooper Aitken and Partners
(accountants) who are major sponsors of the project.
There are fifteen cows around the town and a further
fifteen are going to be released. The cows are
placed in various places around the town—in the
premises of their sponsors. They make for a fun hunt
around the town. A local boat-builder is making the
molds. The opening was held at the Wallace Gal-
lery.

Derek Henderson presents a new series of photographic prints that explore the introduction of exotic species into existing biological environments. Shot with a large format camera these highly-detailed images reflect upon the history and impact of the Kudzu plant in Tavenui, Fiji.
A shaggy yeti-like creature acts as a stand-in for the noxious weed originally native to Japan which was introduced into the United States as a decorative vine in the mid-nineteenth century. By a strange twist of fate Kudzu was then introduced by the American military to many islands in the South Pacific in order to camouflage their equipment so that it could not be seen by Imperial Japanese forces.

Waikato Society of Arts:
Just for the New Members or FYI in general :
We are putting on 5 exhibitions this year and this is
the order that they are proceeding;
A. 23rd April through 1st June Salon des Refusѐs B. 7th August through 7th September
National Youth Awards C. 7th August to 7th September
Waiprint D. 16th October to 16th November
WSA Members Exhibition (Yet to be Named) E. 8th January 2016 to 8th February
These events do not work unless we have members that
are passionately eager to help make the events happen.
There is a lot to do for an event. There are simple tasks
like bringing some nibbles for opening night, handing out
pamphlets when people come through the door, sitting a
spell during an exhibition to watch the art work, setting
up exhibition, hanging art work, finding sponsors for the
events, making lists of the artist and their artwork to pre-
sent in the catalogue.
In order for this process to happen smoothly we need the
help of each and every member. Some tasks are simple
and some are more difficult but each is a very important
part of what we love about the WSA.
Paying for membership means getting a newsletter and
some discounts around town as you flash your card but
there is more too it. We are the creative part of society
that encourages the public to come see our work and
possibly purchase. It is a win win for everyone when an
exhibition is successful and is talked about through out
the town. Everyone needs to do a part to keep this great
group running and working together for the common
goal.
Some of our members have not been getting a newslet-
ter (Oh My!) Some of our members have moved or the
address is wrong in our data base (Oh NOOOO!) and
some people would like to change the way they get their
newsletter. we clean have cleaned out our contact infor-
mation for all the members. Please let us know if you
have any changes.
Collect your art work! Can all members who placed art work in the cash and carry please come and collect your art work. We have them wrapped and held in the spare room which we wish to use as a meeting room.
