Art & Design at Kings
Perfect preparation for a creative degree in the UK
At Kings we aim to facilitate a broad and varied introduction to Art & Design through different processes, techniques and art history. We actively challenge our students to question and think for themselves. We encourage our students to engage with the artistic culture or cultures they inhabit to help them to express their ideas in artistic work which reflects their unique experience.
We value all students’ ideas and aim to create a reflective and questioning environment in the art studio. Students are encouraged to share and articulate their observations and experiences, enabling them to develop and express increasingly independent and confident personal responses. We open the art studio as far as possible to the wider artistic world, offering many opportunities, on many levels, for students to become stimulated, curious and engaged in art.

1. Expert teaching and small classes
Our art and design programmes benefit from expert teaching
staff, who are experienced in, and passionate about, their
field. All are specialist in teaching international students.
(See page 16)
Small classes are a further feature of Kings programmes.
We consider them essential for creating the personalised
and supportive learning environment which leads to
further academic success in the arts.
“The teachers at Kings are really nice and helpful. It is
really good to have maybe some higher level of personal
connections with teachers, which most of the big
Foundation schools don’t provide. They always give
you new ideas and broaden your mind.”
Ya Lu Huang (Elise), now studying Fashion Management
at the London College of Fashion
“The fact that our teachers are artists, not just teachers,
I think is really great.”
Yurie Abe from Japan, studied the Art Foundation
programme at Kings Oxford
3. Flexible study options
At Kings, we do not have a ‘one size fits all’ approach. Our programmes are flexible enough to allow each student to follow
a personalised study path which best suits their intended field of further study and their level of experience. Our range of
courses means that we can cater for all — even those who have never formally studied art and design.
Our current art and design programmes include the newly introduced Art and Design Preparation Programme, and the
specialist Art Foundation course. Art and design options are also available within both the A-level and Advanced Level
Foundation. Full course details can be found from pages 17 to 21.

Why did you choose a Kings course?
“The college has a very good reputation
and, in addition, Oxford seemed like a
good place to start this ‘grown up’ journey.
It has a nice student community and an
amazing mixture of cultures which made
it easier to improve my English.”
How does Kings help students achieve
their goals?
“Apart from the vast amounts of attention
that students receive from the tutors
there is an amazing stream of inspiration
coming from the staff. I’ve always been
fascinated by the amount of care they put
into relationships and their involvement
with students’ lives including their
successes and difficulties.”
What makes studying at Kings so good?
“I loved the fact that groups were really
small, hence every student could get
more attention. I personally learnt how to
listen carefully and on the whole create an
interesting, balanced discussion.”
What do you like about life in the UK?
“Culture and Art. Endless resources
of inspiration, history, breath-taking
architecture and ability to mix with
people of different ages and cultural
backgrounds. I enjoyed doing internships
where I could meet and communicate
with professional people and learn a lot
from them!”
What are your plans for the future?
“I am planning to develop my skills as
much as possible to become really good
at designing and creating. After my
graduation I would love to stay in the UK
to get a good taste of working in the fast-
moving fashion industry. I am in love with
this country and want to become a part of
its creative life.”
How would you describe your Kings
experience to a friend?
“I had a really great time with some hard
moments that let me enjoy the cool side
of student life without letting me forget
that the way to my future is actually a very
serious business!”
How did the teaching and support at
Kings help you to succeed at university?
“Getting into a habit of working hard, being
more serious and responsible about my
future and doing it for myself is one of
the most crucial lessons I learnt. Tutors
at Kings made it clear from the first days
that we’re not there to please them but to
achieve something that we’re aiming for.”
Kristina Kurkina took her Foundation at Kings. She went on to study a BA (Hons) degree in Fashion at Kingston University. She talks about her journey to success with Kings.
Mariana Peloso do Nascimento studied art as part of the Advanced Level Foundation at Kings. She is now studying Film Production at the University for the Creative Arts.
How are you enjoying life at university?
“I have fallen for my university and I am
enjoying it very much. It is different from
what I had expected but a good different
and it has been a great experience.”
What does your course involve, and what
aspect are you enjoying most?
“It is a very intense course in terms of the
amount of work and you are expected to
do a lot on your own outside of the classes.
Each unit consists of 200 hours including
classes, individual studies/work and
workshops. I am learning a lot and I like
how we are encouraged to try a bit of
each aspect of filmmaking so we can
make a good decision when we specialise
next year.”
Are there particular things which you
did on your Foundation course that have
proved useful for your current studies?
“The presentation and essays that we had
to do have helped me a lot to be able to
complete my course work. Also, the art
lessons taught me a lot about the creative
process which has been very helpful.”
How would you summarise your
experience at Kings Oxford?
“I think it was the step I needed to get used
to how things work in the UK. It was the
ideal experience and place to help me
acclimatize with the new environment
and way of learning.”

Yuri Abe from Japan talks about her experience studying the Art Foundation course at Kings Oxford, and how it has enriched her creative practice.
Were you studying art at school in Japan
and is it different studying art here?
Yes, and yes it is. In my country they always
focus on the final piece but here, although
the final piece is important, they also focus
on the experiment, the process, what we
do to get to the final piece. Because in my
country they didn’t really focus on the
process, we didn’t have to produce sheets
for the research we did. Here we have to
show everything — so it’s kind of different,
but I think I prefer the British style because
in my country my teachers didn’t really
give us advice on how to develop.
I did gain some skills in Japan, but I’ve
learnt more here.
Are there specific skills you’ve learnt in an
art sense?
For me, I think I’ve learnt how to record
things and how to present it, and by doing
that, after finishing my projects I can look
back and do evaluation. That’s really
beneficial for me in order to make better
things in the next project.
Which project have you enjoyed most?
There’s a specific project I enjoyed and it
was about transformation. I enjoyed that
a lot because I’m interested in calligraphy
and typography and I did that in my
project. It’s my favourite area.

Joanne Mouland Art teacher at Kings Bournemouth
“I’ve enjoyed working with students of all ages and
nationalities for more than 16 years, about half of this
in EFL and half in Art and Design. I was a primary Art
teacher at International School Manila and I taught the
International Baccalaureat Middle Years and Diploma
Programmes at Bali International School.
“My background is in Graphic Information Design. I’m a
published designer of educational information and surf
magazine illustration.”
Giuseppina Esposito Art teacher at Kings London
“I am a very experienced teacher with degrees in Fine
Art from Chelsea (U.A.L.) and the Slade (U.C.L.), and a
PGCE from the Institute of Education . My art teaching
experience spans sculpture, drawing, printmaking,
architecture, film and photography.
“I keep up with new developments in the creative arts by
regularly visiting galleries and major exhibitions such as
Frieze, Documenta in Kassel and the Bienniales in Venice
and Istanbul. I have exhibited my own work in the UK and
abroad, including Italy, Ireland, and Russia, work which has
been reviewed in publications such as Flash Art, The Irish
Times and Repubblica. I have curated exhibitions as part
of a curatorial partnership — Baylors and Diamond — which
I set up to showcase work by international artists.”
Our teachersAt Kings, our art and design teachers are all experienced
educators. They are also all talented artists, with interests
in a variety of specialisms.
“ Since June 2014 I have been the Head of Art for Kings Oxford, London and Bournemouth. I really enjoy the collaborative side of my role, working with other members of the art team to develop programmes of study that challenge and inspire our students. It is a pleasure to work with students from different cultures and I get great satisfaction helping our students fulfil their potential.
After taking a degree in Printed Textile Design I worked with different design portfolios selling to the Japanese and European fashion markets. My study of Textiles has taken to me to Africa and the Far East and has led to a lifelong passion for travel and learning about other cultures. I studied film editing processes in Beijing, China as part of Columbia University’s short course programme.
In 1998, I completed a PGCE in secondary teaching and since then I have mainly taught in the state education sector. I completed a Masters in Pedagogy and Contemporary Practices at Goldsmiths University, and my MA has enabled me to combine my passion for teaching with the development of my own ideas drawing on contemporary artistic practices. ”

English Language Development
Students will take a broad skills-based
programme, progressing from a general
English focus to a more specialist focus.
They will gain the vocabulary and
language skills required for further study
in high-level art and design disciplines.
They will also develop essential study
skills so they are prepared for the demands
of art-related courses at Kings and beyond.

course. It is continuous and formative.
Portfolio Development
The Portfolio Development module begins
with a general introduction to the main art
and design areas. Students will develop
their skills and experience in both 2D and
3D disciplines. Gradually, they will build
their portfolio and we will work with them
to ensure they showcase their skills and
abilities in the best possible light.

students who need to develop their
portfolio and/or their language level
prior to a main art-related course. As

Art Foundation
This course is for students who have an
artistic and creative ability and want the
fastest, most direct path to an art and
design-related degree course at a UK
university. All students, including UK
nationals, must complete an Art
Foundation course before starting an Art
and Design degree. Usually, international
students must also study a general
Foundation before they are accepted on
to an Art Foundation. The Kings Art
Foundation includes Communication
Studies Skills so that international
students with artistic and creative
abilities can fulfil the university entrance
language criteria in just one year.

produce both two-dimensional and
three-dimensional work — part of which
will reflect their specialist subject area.
Preparing a portfolio All students who wish to apply for the
Art Foundation must submit a portfolio
as part of their application.
What should a portfolio consist of?
The portfolio should show the range of
work students have done in the last two
years, either in classes or in their own
time. We advise them to show work
done in a variety of media and
materials, and they should also include:
Any approaches to drawing, such as
experimental drawing, quick
planning sketches and direct
observational drawing.
Any work relevant to the specialist
area(s) they are considering (for
example fashion or fine art).
Any museum studies or work
inspired by other artists, designers or
craftspeople.
Some developmental work — not just
finished pieces — showing how they
explore a subject or theme and
experiment with ideas visually. It
would be good to see examples of
sketchbook work.
Students may include 3D work: for
example garments, models, sculptures
or maquettes, items of jewellery or body
ornament. They may have to send
photos of these. If they have done
design work for any of these pieces,
they should include it.
We ask students to submit a minimum
of 10 sheets of work with a maximum of
20 sheets. They should also send a
short written statement (max 200
words), about their experience in art,
craft and/or design, why they would
like to do this course and what degree
subjects they are considering.

Course content
Typical degree course outcomes
“Only doing Art gives me the opportunity to really like everything I do. I’m never bored! It’s exciting and the course really prepares us for university. You have to be responsible and independent, just like at university. The art residential to Wytham Woods was one of the highlights of the course. We got to meet the Oxford art students for the first time. We talked about the things we had in common, and how we approached the same projects.”
Julia Dekimpe from Switzerland is studying on the Art Foundation programme at Kings London
“In first term we tried different subjects which I think really broadened my horizons and helped me to gain new skills in those spheres. The whole year was an amazing experience and unforgettable journey. I have learnt so many things and gained so much experience.”

“We go with our teacher to museums and galleries a lot, we take our sketch books, we draw something there, we take pictures, we come back and we do something with those. In my free time I also visit places — London is perfect for that because you can go anywhere and you’ll find something new. It’s the perfect city to study Art, I think.”
Irina Gorskaia from Russia studied Art as part of the Advanced Level Foundation before winning a place to study for a degree in Fashion: Media and Marketing
“I’ve found lots of inspiration from being in Oxford. For example, I love the architecture, especially the gothic architecture like the cemetery on Cowley Road. I like it, it inspires me. There’s a term that we have in Spanish that means kind of ‘eye candy’ — I see colours and details, I love details. I see structures and I think ‘I must draw it’ I’ve been to galleries and museums, and we’ve been to a lot with the art teachers here.”
