the Art & technology project started in April 2013 as part of the existing Jobb till 1000 project, that was initiated to create new jobs and a less sensitive local economy. With itâs new approach, to connect the local manufacturing industry and the international creative industry, Art & technology perfectly fitted with our goals. Dozens of artists, designers and scientists from around the globe, who were involved in a wide range of activities, brought new creativity and new knowledge to our small town with itâs hightech industry. the project inspired many and we will definitely find ways to continue the development of initiatives coming from the Art & technology project. it is my hope that the project that started in olofström now will get a broader perspective, because our global so-ciety is in urgent need of renovation and improve-ments. hopefully the Art & technology project can contribute to that.

âWe delivered the concept for a permanent Innovation Lab in Olofström where international artists, designers, scientists and entrepreneurs can focus on radical and sustainable innovation.â
6
For that reason, freethinking artists were invited to collaborate with technicians and developers from local manufacturing industries.
right from the start of the project there was an emphasis on communication to create attention about the project as a whole and to generate opportunities for all participants; the municipality, the artists, the companies and other partners.
A premise of the Art & technol-ogy project is to take freethinking artists very serious, because often they donât only bring in crazy ideas, but also knowledge of materials, production methods and perseverance and passion. And often they hardly participate in economic systems. introducing these inventors or innovators into industrial environments, where they can collaborate with skilled technicians and work with high-quality manufacturing techniques, is extremely challenging.
to optimize collaboration between artists and staff of a company, Art & technology introduced a new phenome-
non with, what we call, âArtist-in-factoryâ projects, which includes the creation of a temporary workspace for one or more artists at the production area of a manufacturing company. the idea is that artists and staff should meet, talk and start thinking in new directions together to create new opportunities, preferably with the existing machinery at the company. And the idea is that all should share in future benefits.
the Artist-in-factory projects were also intended as try-outs towards a perma-nent innovation lab in olofström where international artists, designers, scientists and entrepreneurs can focus on (radical and sustainable) innovation. Art & tech-nology arranged a master class for young european sculptors as a first step towards creating a permanent sculpture centre to stimulate growth at a local stone company. several (some huge and impressive) sculp-tures were installed in olofström as the beginnings of a sculpture park to stimulate growth in tourism. Many presentations, exhibitions and courses were arranged by international artists to create a diverse and high quality cultural offer to give the town a stronger cultural image and to make it more attractive for visitors and (even maybe future) inhabitants.
With the goal to help each other, to learn from each other and to grow together we started seeking international
collaboration from day one, with artists, designers, scientists, other Art & technol-ogy projects, regions and cities. We also stimulated others abroad to start up their own projects and to become our partner in future cooperation. the european creative industry is extremely important, supplying jobs for many, often in new directions, making a local or regional economy more diverse and less sensitive. that is exactly what the Art & technology project tried to contribute to in olofström, and thatâs why the project is partner in several interna-tional networks with partners in up to 15 european countries.
Art & technology establishes connections everywhere; between art, science, entrepreneurship, product devel-opment and innovation, culture, tourism, communication and more. in just one and a half years, this concept has proven itself, thanks to all participating artists, design-ers, scientists, companies, colleagues and international and regional partners.
Since the beginning of 2013 the Art & Technology project has been tasked with introducing new thinking, new creativity and new knowledge, to create new products, new markets and new jobs in Olofström, Sweden.
>> Art & Technology Roel Faassen, initiator and project leader
A project that has come to life quite recently is Art & Technology in Olofström. Roel Faassen runs this project that lets artists approach the modern industry and offer their creative solutions on products and production. The result is astounding and hopefully this may continue. It may actually end up just anywhere. The project brings the mind back to the second half of the 19th century where creativity flowed and inventions changed our way of life. Back then, just as in Art & Technology, it was difficult to distinguish between culture and business.

Marko Kokkonen and Peter Axelssoniuc olofström (industrial Development center)
The project with Art & Technology at IUC Olofström was a unique way of product development. The Artists came with their âdesigner eyesâ and looked at our products as well as our machinery, from a different aspect than we do. Shapes and parts that we see as scrap metal, they saw as beautiful and useful things. For example, one artist saw a piece of sheet metal that had been heated for one of our material testings and thought that it had beautiful colors. She started to experiment with using the coloring in her ideas. That was something that we at IUC never would have noticed in that way. More examples: a lamp out of formed waste material, fabric forming in a forming die normally used for metal, and scale prototypes of energy saving equipment. The collaboration between IUCâs product development team and the artists was a great opportunity to learn from each other. The free thinking artists together with the knowledge in product development, that IUC supports, is a great way of thinking out of the box and to create new products. We hope that IUC in the future will have the possibility to host more artists in Art & Technology.

in January 2014 i applied for an âArtist in Factoryâ residency, which i learned of on a Dutch website called transartist. i was captivated by the photo of the nebbeboda skola, the former school where the nobel laureate, harry Martinson, spent his formative years, surrounded by wilderness.
the factory was the iuc in olofström, sweden, a former research facility for volvo. i had been looking for something like this for years. i was accepted. i came to imbue with my artistic way of seeing and working the process of redeveloping the existing manufacturing infrastructure and the expertise that retains and creates jobs in the olofström Kommun. Applying a sustainable inventions way of thinking to the mitigation of climate destruction, i began work in March 2014 and was chosen to continue. For nine months altogether i have worked on this project in and around olofström and in my studio in essen, germany. i embraced the Zen beginners Mind and saw a curious relationship emerge between elasticity, Magnetism and Propulsion. i completed three initial maquettes. the sculpture Propeller iii has a moving paddle-wing construction that collects solar and wind power. the energy is wound on to a heavy elastic cord encased in the pole of the structure. When there is neither wind nor solar activity, the elastic unwinds, releasing the stored power. in this project the Mainspring Principle has evolved into a wind winder.
i organized an exhibition in the olofström library, where i showed prints, drawings and the initial Mainspring maquettes with which i had tested and developed the propeller process. the laser-cut magnetic steel boards (120 X 200 cm) i used to present the work were the first new products i designed under this program. i was mysteriously drawn to magnets, which i later learned could play a role in the circuit breakers needed to control the winding and braking of the elastic. As the library lacked an exhibition infrastructure, the magnet boards were purchased after the exhibition for the communityâs permanent use. encounters with my associates at the iuc and the need to laser-cut the magnetic steel boards brought me together with stans & Press. through this process i found the way to move forward to the next upscaled Propeller maquette.
i am exploring the possibility of using recycled auto tires to make industrial- strength mega-elastics for storage collection and the release of power, solving both the problems of sustainable storage and of recycling tires. My motivation arises from a consciousness of the wholeness of things, evolving from the writings of spinoza. My vision is of advancing the canon of kinetic sculpture while developing products that will improve human sustainability in a balanced environment that considers the natural web of our complex world. i will continueâŠ
Wind and solar energy fluctuate. Without reserves to bridge the gaps, neither succeeds as a reliable form of energy. Summoning up the spirit of Leonardo da Vinci, I decided to apply the Mainspring Principle within a sculptural context as an attempt at a solution to the challenge of storing sustainable energy.

Art & Technology provides a unique connection between the artists and the industry. the artists bring their ability to think outside the box and focus on the experience, while the industry contributes its knowledge of practical limitations and its ability to produce commercial results. together they create something new and unique that should attract the attention of more municipalities and regions.
it is an attractive idea to imagine an entirely new creature that lifts the swedish industry. An âArtepreneurâ with one foot in the creating and the other one in the producing that develops attractive new and unexpected products, manufactured by the companies here at home, and are sold worldwide.

The Art & Technology project was tasked with bringing in creativity and knowledge from around the world to Olofström.
For that reason we initiated the Art & technology residency in the nebbeboda skola, just outside olofström. the residency project provides temporary living and working space for participating artists, designers and scientists. itâs the place where inspiring thoughts, works and concepts are presented. in this way the old nebbeboda skola became our connection to new ideas and knowledge from around the world.

The residence project is located in the Nebbeboda

âThe Nebbeboda skola, was a love at first sight for me, the picture that is, which
drew me to Olofström initially. Like all love relationships, there are a lot of challenges in making them work over time. As I write this, in the early morning of my fifth departure, in this year 2014, I feel that I have found a
place to live, to work and to learn â and so the love continues...â
Nancy E. Watt // artist, designer (Canada/Germany)
âThe Nebbeboda school is such a pleasent place to be with the inspiring surroundings
and to be in contact with this beautiful nature. It was a unique experience for me
sharing the Nebbeboda school as home in a great interdisciplinary group with five other open-minded artists. I am happy and feel privileged to be introduced to the concept
of the Art & Technology project. I am really thankfull that I had the opportunity to be
there and get to know you.â

MARCH⊠the station is deserted as i wait for the only bus coming from bromölla. this time i am just as curious as previous times whether i will recognize our guest directly or not. this will be our first meeting. i look for the passenger who has the largest suitcase. then i think i see her. the suitcase is big and orange. so is the matching water bottle she is carrying in her hand. on her head, an elegant orange hat, one that no other person in town would wear. it is nancy and she recognizes me. she walks in my direction and asks with a kind and open look: âAre you liesbeth?â
tonight is the first presentation by the Artist-in-Factory group. everything is set up in the classroom, a projector and chairs. When i go inside the teacherâs apartment, part of the living accommodation at the resi-dence, JĂ©rĂŽme greets me. âbonjourâ, he says, elated as he holds up a poster. itâs a stunning photograph â taken by Julia â of the lake in the vicinity of the residence with the forest mirrored in the lake. JĂ©rĂŽme has turned the photograph sideways so that it reveals a tower with angel wings in the reflected

AUGUST⊠Karen has just come back from a swim in the lake. We have a meeting with the press. she pulls a comb through her hair and puts on her lipstick carefully. the journalist and photographer have arrived. they lead us to the closed veranda which is a good place to take pictures. it is hot and the August sun provides a summery atmosphere. We talk about the film that is to be shown the next day at olofströms cinema. Karen explains the screenplay she wrote in new york a few years ago and shot last year. Karen did the editing. it has won awards in europe, brazil, usA⊠now there is no red carpet and the night is humid for the swedish premiere. nonetheless, champagne bubbles burst and interesting discussions flow between the attendees.
the concentration in the studio is intense. so concentrated that i hesitate to go inside. brechtje is sitting behind her laptop. she does not even look up when i gently pass through the door. Judith is inspired by wild boars that are running around the residence every night. she has already sold one of her wild boar drawings. i have come to talk about brechtjeâs presentation and to photograph her and Judith. the sun shines through the tall windows. i have no words to describe the atmosphere that radiates from this space. i look outside and see the greenery of the lake. âthe seaâ, as harry Martinsson once called it from his perspective as an eleven year old schoolboy. that sea, which is the opening to the world and to America, where his mother once went and disappeared forever.
Martinssonâs mother is in contrast with brechtje. this blonde, soft, belgian woman develops smart toys and materials to encourage independency and creativity in child development. During the weeks that she is in sweden, she visits, under the direction of the project manager, companies in the region. one firm has already shown interest in her designs. the light flows into the studio. only from the side can you see brechtjeâs round, protruding, pregnant belly. What a joy for a child to have a mother who creates intelligent toys.
NOVEMBER⊠nancy is waiting for me at the bus stop for the fifth time this year. now we recognize each other easily. We greet each other happily. getting to know her during this year, i begin to really appreciate her skills, perseverance and humour, and yes even her stubbornness. i am really looking forward to being with her again. she has worked hard over this past year. together we have organized her exhibition at the library, and learned much from each other about the communication challenges of working in multicultural environments. sometimes we have misunder-standings with each other, but mainly we let humour form the foundation of forgiveness and moving forward. nancy created a beautiful product. itâs the first product within the Art & technology project that is going to placed in the market, and itâs produced here in olofström. this time her suitcase is minimal. she has also an empty suitcase to be able to take the finished prototypes back to germany to sell. We drive the winding road from the residence through the forest. the leaves have begun to change their color. Fog is lying over âthe seaâ.

âThe industry and the artist/designer need each other to reach new heights and reach ever new and better solutions is something I have come to realize through this project.â
>>Itâs good that someone arranges meetings between the industry and the artists/designersi, Julia gamborg nielsen, an artist and designer, had the honor and pleasure to be chosen to participate in the Art & technology/ âArtists-in-factoryâ in the spring in olofström. industries have a great need to innovate in order to survive locally in an increas-ingly globalized world. in todayâs world, when much has been outsourced, where production steps are gigantic and the social responsibility of the individual is repressed, we want to create a change. innovation and creativity are reduced when we live and work far apart, and where specialization creates divisions between people â and by extension between art/craft and industry. i want to help change that. it is in meetings, innovation can arise when we communicate, not only between people but also between technology and artistic expression. to reach new common goals, i experience as a designer, that you have to work to get access to the entire production process in order to fully understand and be able to influence production. As an artist you would otherwise generally work far from the industry. the industry and the artist/designer need each other to reach new heights and reach ever new and better solutions is something i have come to realize through this project. these meetings can boost the economy both within the local industry and in bringing the art world to new opportunities for creative expression and improved livelihoods.
>>How important this project is for innovation and development locallyMy understanding is that many products for a long time have been manufactured in other parts of the world, but that there is now an interest in bringing production home again. not only because it saves time by transporting profits, but mainly through reduced occurrences of misunderstandings about the products performance and end-use. i mean that once again, people have begun to realize the benefits of local production in domestic development and the environment as we slowly begin to cherish. this view is reinforced by that seen in light of the fact that many swedish industries and local crafts are being lost here at home. Full workshops and a generation of skills are being lost. When and if we are now starting to come to the conclusion that we want to bring back a lot of production to sweden, there may not be any industrial or handicraft skills to come home to.

>>My experiences and my contribution to the project during the project period in the springi am very grateful to have had the opportunity to get in touch with companies and industries in sweden, specifically olofström, in this project. the project Art & technology became for me an important experience and âeye-openerâ. i got the opportunity to see what resources and what exciting local businesses that are located in sweden, olofström. Furthermore, i realized what fantastic people and skilled craftsmen we have and that we artists can develop ideas and projects with. it is problematic when many usually sit and work from stockholm or any of the other major cities to realize their artistic ideas. they donât have the contacts, resources or knowledge which makes it more difficult to influence and reach out to the local industries. While i think many industries would feel very good to have designerâs artistic perspectives for a more innovative approach when new products will be developed, not only in the product development phase, but also to be able to see their own activities outside and with othersâ creative eye in a larger context. this cooperation may also shed light and lead to different sustainability perspectives and new ways of thinking.
the fact that i was privileged to come in with fresh eyes lead to that a local industry in olofström could re-evaluate and revisit their work and their current production practices. the new approach helped to develop a new method for the company that can generate millions in profits in one part of the business, rather than incredible strain on the environment in terms of quantities of waste materials. the artistic idea was that this waste material can be redrawn in an earlier stage so that they can then be used to design new products. in addition to the increased profits, the well-being among the staff will more than likely increase due to the reduced wastage.
>>What is the outcome of the project in the long term? For me, Art & technology/Artists-in-factory has been a crucial step in the chain to generate output for myself through a new contact with an industrial company in sweden. thanks to the project in olofström i will now, together with two companies explore the possibility of using industrial waterjet in an innovative artistic project where we will develop various measurements in the context of processing materials for production directed to a new art and design crowd.
>>Many more artists/designers and industry would benefit from a similar interdisciplinary project exchangesMy hope is that more municipalities with industries in various stages of threatened decommissioning alternatively need of renovation would follow the municipality of olofströmâs example and start similar projects throughout sweden. i am convinced that there is a huge unmet need for cooperation across borders out there. there is a great interest among designers and artists, while there is a need in the industry. Designing bridges between artists/designers and the industry and vice versa will lead to innovation and to a strong society. A profitable combination.

S wedish Waterjet Lab has during a couple of years performed research in the area of piercing in
different materials. Piercing is the starting point of the cutting process when itâs not suitable to start outside the material. The visual effects of the piercing in glass are very organic and might have the unexpected output of becoming a method for innovative decoration of glass. The reason for the lab to work in thick glass
has been to visually study the process during cutting to find out how the water jet beam is acting when it is not cutting through the material. Since itâs a very organic process and the result can be very decorative some of the test pieces have been inspiring examples of how to decorate glass. Many visitors in the lab have seen it and some of the pieces are also shown in an art exhibition in Ronneby to inspire visitors. Together with the project ART & Technology in Olofström and the designer Julia Gamborg Nielsen
we have been given the opportunity to develop the process and focus on the decoration possibilities when processing glass. As a research lab with strong connection to both the industry and the academy, the Swedish Waterjet Lab continuously aims to find new ways to innovate the waterjet technology or the use of waterjet technology. By collaborating across borders we strive to find a beneficial knowledge exchange and we also want to encourage new target groups to use the water jet technique.

Artists and designers are trained to see more than there is, are capable to make unexpected connections between materials or procedures and have the
ability to relate that to a visual attractive outcome. companies are optimized to generate series of products that after a while, or triggered by an economic downfall, are declining in sales and thus need to evolve into better products or get replaced?
Why not invite an artist/designer to create or invent a new commercially viable product? so the only thing we have to do is to create something out of the blue. it seems a simple remark that might solve big problems, but to get there all parties involved need to line up their needs and possibilities. Furthermore they have to be able to co-create the âout of the boxâ ideas into a reality. then they can produce (in a short time) great results.
While the companies have the knowledge of their machines and how to realize something with them, the artist/designer has his imagination and certain basic production skills. Putting both in a jar, where they need to exchange their knowledge and visions, is a necessity to get the best result for this experiment of creating things.
Doing so might lead to beautiful and effective new products that can save labor or create a new market.

Pia Lindahl, Licentiate in Sustainable Product Development,Blekinge Institute of Technology, Karlskrona

Can we chAngE the world with âsusTAinAblE dEsignâ?
Sustainable development is about quality of life â for everyone â now and in the future. this requires, among other things, that resources are managed in a sustainable way and that we all strive towards a good living environ-ment. the awareness of todayâs sustain-ability challenges is relatively high. We know that every year more resources are spent than the earth produces, and that our consumption causes emissions that both affect the climate and pollute our soil and water. these problems are not only a consequence of high demands, but also follow from an inefficient use of available resources. Furthermore, the situation will probably become worse due to a growing world population with a generally increas-ing standard of living. As designers, we cannot solve all problems, but by thinking strategically based on a sustainable use of resources we can do quite a lot. let me give an example.
Much of the waste that is generat-ed today originates from products that are manufactured, used and thrown away. statistics from recent decades show that we today buy more products that cost less and that we keep for shorter times. in order to lower the price of the product, the product quality is often decreased, which in turn leads to products that will break easily and then will be replaced with new products instead of being repaired. by designing products to be used only for a short time, and that are difficult to repair/update or recycle, designers and product develop-ers are contributing to inefficient use of resources. however, with the possibility to design more durable products that are possible to repair/upgrade and that can be recycled after use, the designer can make a difference. two of the challenges we face to in producing durable products are: 1) that the customers do not ask for durable products since they do not consider the product âlife expectancyâ when buying it, and 2) that the producers do not offer durable products since they risk making less money by selling fewer product units. to prolong a productâs life the customer must be willing to keep the
product for a longer time. this requires, in addition to the objective properties that the product lasts longer and ages well, also that it adds more value to the user than a new product. if we find a product valuable, it increases our willingness to keep it and to repair it if it breaks. today, the knowledge on how to repair products ourselves is in many cases low. therefore, we either need to learn how to repair them or we will need to have access to someone who can repair them for us. this is an opportunity for new businesses which shows the importance of product development and business development to go hand in hand. Fortunately, there are good examples to be inspired from. Previously, customers have often had a desire to own the products â but this is about to change, and more people see the benefits in borrowing products when they need them instead of owning and managing products also when they do not need them. today you can rent a car instead of owning it â but why not also rent clothes for special occasions, or sporting equipment when you go on holiday? to have companies that own and rent the products creates several other positive side effects. those companies will develop knowledge regarding how the products should be managed, and will ask for durable products which creates an incentive to produce durable products.
So can we change the world with sustainable design? yes, by thinking long term, changing the way we measure success, and collaborating with other stakeholders in the product life cycle, we can create systems where durable prod-ucts are preferred. this will increase the efficiency in how we use our resources. the Art & technology project involves de-signers, artists, companies and academia in the development of new products â creating the type of collaboration needed to develop sustainable products. All sus-tainability problems will not be solved in this way â but collaboration for increased efficiency in how we use resources is one part of the solution to the challenge of creating a better quality of life â for every-one â now and in the future.
Sustainable development is about quality of life â for everyone â now and in the future.

Diabas, often called âblack graniteâ, is a 1 billion years old green to black volcanic igneous. There are several areas in the world where diabas is found, but the best quality is quarried in the south of Sweden, near Olofström.
the stone is used for exterior cladding, tiles and kitchen work-tops and itâs popular among sculptors worldwide. in the past the stone industry provided jobs for thousands and thousands in the region of blekinge. the beautiful black diabas is still very cherished by many, but nowadays itâs hard to persevere for small-scaled industries and craftsmen.
in June 2014 Art & technology arranged a two-week diabas master class for young european sculptors from spain, Denmark, turkey, latvia and germany as a first activity towards an international Diabas sculpture centre, which is intended to become a large-scale, permanent art workshop that attracts not only artists and art students from around the globe, but also tourists for short courses and simple sculpting projects, sometimes guided by famous artists. the centre can provide new jobs in the local stone industry, among artists, craftsmen and technical staff.
the diabas master class was a collaboration with the local stone company Zaarstone Ab in vilshult, olofström. Zaarstone provided all professional equipment and machinery. owner ted Zaar is experienced in guiding artists in their creative processes and in creating sculptures, commissioned by famous artists from around the world.
As a result of the master class, several sculptures (some huge and impressive) were installed in olofström as the beginning of a sculpture park to stimulate growth in tourism.
Förr i tiden sysselsatte stenindustrin tusentals mÀnniskor i Blekinge.

I regularly participate in sculpture events, in symposia and artist-in-residency programs⊠these events could be very different, both in terms of their practical circumstances and their pragmatic approach to art activity and creativity. i have come to choose the event or program i participate in more and more carefully. the term and idea of a âsculpture symposiumâ was initiated by Karl Prantl. he organised the first symposium in a stone quarry at sankt Margarethen, Austria in 1959, by inviting internationally renowned artists. the idea was to provide an inspiring atmosphere for exchange between the artists.
The Art and Technology residency program is one of the most interesting projects i have participated in recently. it provided the ideal environment for independent creativity. Despite the decreased popularity of stone sculpture in the arts, stone as a creative material holds important properties and unexplored potential. Developing technologies provide
a unique opportunity for artists to work on durable, resistant material, often on a large scale, and independently from expensive industrial ramifications. At the same time, working on stone is a technically complex endeavour and a regular artist-in-residence program cannot provide the necessary conditions for this kind of artistic activity, as well as a symposium. the artist-in-residence program offered artists free collaboration with professionals and their existing, up-to-date technology to further their artistic creation and experimentation in contemporary stone sculpture.
Cooperation with a manufacturer during a residency is largely different from a normal relationship as there is the realisation of a concrete goal. We were able to use their technology independently and were involved in the individual processes that allowed us to gain an extensive overview and deeper understanding of the constructive usability of these specific technologies. Zaarstone is a dynamic, well-equipped
factory with a lot of experience in working with artists. i believe that the project also offered the manufacturer the opportunity to develop innovative ways of collaborating with artists. thanks to the relationship we established during the Art and technology project, i plan to realise some of my works with Zaarstone over the next few years.
Master class in stone sculpture is a rare event. Few symposia offer the opportunity for young sculptors to deepen their skills whilst working alongside experienced fellow artists. the aim of the diabase workshop was to provide optimum conditions for experimentation with this specific stone. it aimed to inspire participants to challenge the technical difficulties, to research, question, analyse, explore and develop ideas and projects. i believe both the residency and the master class have the potential to become an internationally reputed, excellent event with its specific approach to collaboration between art and technology.

stone carving is definitely not the most used material among young contemporary artists in scandinavia. it has been so unfashionable material
for a long time, that the scandinavian art academies in general no longer offer courses in the technique, so i was of course very surprised when i was in vienna, Austria as an exchange student at the art academy, and learned that the academy offered a semester-long course in stone carving every year. i was surprised an intrigued and signed up for the course. i discovered how stone has the potential of being an amazing material for a sculptor within the context of contemporary art. the fascination grew and later i did a master class in salzburg, Austria to develop my skills.
When i returned to Denmark i immediately learned that there is not a very good culture for stone sculpting among young Danish or scandinavian artists. there are hardly any courses offered in stone carving at any of the three Danish art academies. even in norway and sweden, where there is plenty of natural sources for stone, not many courses are available within the art academies.
And why is that? the answer could be that, due to how technology has developed within the last ten-twenty years, many young artists have turned away from the traditional artistâs materials as i.e. painting, drawing, sculpting and started to use new media i.e. video, instal-lation and computer-based media. this means that there has been a tendency of a rise in popularity among the new media, while the traditional materials have not been of interest among contemporary artists for a while.
yet, a new trend has appeared, as the generation who have grown up with mobile phones and digital cameras have entered the art scene, there is paradoxically enough of a new-found interest in using traditional materials within a contemporary context. in the art scene, the trend has been named ânew materialismâ and is basically a trend of young artists who re-discover the traditional materials and use them in a contemporary context. this means that a
lot of young artists are currently interested in gaining knowledge about traditional techniques, that are no longer being taught at the art academies.
When i started stone carving i knew i would have to practice a lot in order to develop and maintain the technique, and i started searching for places to do stone carving. it definitely was not easy to find, so i was very thrilled when i found an open call for a master class in stone carving in olofström, two hours away from my home in copenhagen.
i signed up together with a german colleague that i met in Austria. the master class was arranged by Art and technology in collaboration with olofström municipality and Zaarstone. the teachers of the course where skilled artists, and the other participants where young artists or art students who all had previously worked with stone. During the course we all worked at the Zaarstone factory and created sculptures that are now installed in olofström municipality. in the intense two week course we all learned a lot about working with the famous, beautiful and extremely hard stone âdiabasâ, also known as âthe black gold of swedenâ, and developed our ideas and techniques.
For a young artist, it is very important to be able to learn, exchange experience and develop ideas together with fellow artists, and that is (amongst others) what such a course can do.

last summer several young artists came to vilshult in blekinge during a couple of weeks to learn how to work with the âblack goldâ â swedish diabase. ted Zaar, owner of Zaarstone in vilshult, assisted with knowledge and guidance. he was also responsible for utilities and machines.
âi have a genuine interest and commit-ment to the arts and have worked close to artists for a long time, resulting in many special projectsâ, he explains.
the two-week course is known as a master class conducted under the eu pro-ject Art & technology. the aim is to bring the industry and art together.
Project manager and initiator is roel Faassen at the municipality of olofström.
âvia Art & technology, we want to create an international center of diabase sculpture in olofström, which not only attract artists but also tourists and busi-nessesâ, he explains.
the center is linked to Zaarstone. âit is natural in view of the availability of high-quality diabase in the areaâ. For many of the artists it is the first time that they have had the chance to work with diabase. âFor students who took the course it was a challenge to work with such a hard stone as diabase. At the same time they discovered the possibilities that the hard-ness bringsâ, says ted Zaar.
The project has received attention in several places. âit has led to the fact that Zaarstone has received new inquiries from artists that we havenât worked with beforeâ, says ted Zaar. three established rock artists who have participated in the project have also created a respective new artwork erected at various locations in olofström. âi have to say that the great interest in diabase surprised me. now we are planning to hold two courses per yearâ.

our introduction to the Art & technology project olofström could be seen almost as a coincidence. âAlmostâ because, even if browsing the web, we were very focused to find
different creative industry initiatives in the world, which use creativity as a means for local development; but âcoincidenceâ because it was especially the Art & technology project in olofström, which attracted our attention among other numerous projects, presented by the internet world.
We found out, that Art & technology olofström was aiming at creating synergy between creative minds/artists and technologies/science, to come up with unique designs, both in terms of functionality and aesthetics. but, what was even more important, the project demonstrated a wholesome attitude towards usage of local resources. the idea to initiate collaboration between international artists and local factories/workrooms /technology laboratories sounded like a good idea to develop cultural and economic growth.
Creative industries projects are an important line for Kuldiga Artists residence. some of the curated design events in the town aim at bringing together artists with local craftsmen or manufacturers, to come up with unique design prototypes. For instance, fashion design students work together with a local shoemaker to create fashion shoes, while industrial designers are working on the idea of a unique Kuldiga open-air-cinema chair.
We believe that thanks to the social design concept and the hand-made quality, such products later will have an extra added value for marketing and retail, with a potential to leave a positive financial impact on local communities and its inhabitants.
We believe in international collaboration to achieve local growth. therefore we are developing collaboration with the Art & technology project in olofström. We hope that it will be possible to implement co-working projects in the future, involving manufacturers and technology laboratories from latvia and sweden, as well as other countries.
