"It has been a long two years since our inaugural event in 2009, in which art against knives has grown from a one-off event channe-lling the energy following Oliver’s attack, to a fully fledged charity working to prevent the root causes of knife crime and violent gang culture in the East End.

This auction is set to be even more exciting than the last one, but more importantly the money raised will be ploughed straight back into providing creative opportunities for young people in some of the most deprived areas in London.

We would like to thank everyone who has supported us to date. The success of aak today is also thanks to an entire team of young volunteers, some fellow art students, some young people who have been born and brought up in the estates in east London. Working together,we have created something truly incredible, and it is now time to sustain ourselves so that no one else has to experience the devastating effects of knife crime."

aak was born from unprovoked stab-bing of Oliver Hemsley, a 21 year old student from Central Saint Martins Co-llege of Art & Design. The vicious attack, which has left Oliver in a wheelchair, took place In Shoreditch, East London in the summer of 2008. It is the impact of this that drives art against knives to create something positive from such a life-changing experience.

art against knives began life as an exhi-bition organised by Oliver’s friends and fellow Central Saint Martins students. The exhibition quickly swelled to become the most exciting art event London had seen for years with work donated by the likes of Antony Gormley, Tracey Emin, Wolfgang Tillmans, Rankin, Tim Walker, Vivienne Westwood, Giles Deacon, Christopher Kane, Banksy, Polly Morgan,

ART AGAINST KNIVES

“ART AGAINST KNIVES (AAK) is a young, creative charity, working to reduce

the root causes of knife crime through youth-led arts initiatives that provide

an alternative to violent gang culture.”

Cornelia Parker and Ron Arad, as well as scores of CSM students and artists from the East End. Held at Shoreditch House, the auction was covered by publications including the Evening Standard, the In-dependent, I-D Magazine, Vogue, Da-zed & Confused and Wonderland. Sin-ce the exhibition we have collaborated with additional creative projects to raise awareness of the issues surrounding kni-fe crime. You may have seen us at Love-Box Music Festival, featured as Cultural Engineers in Honda's Dream Factory campaign, or hosting the closing party at London Fashion Week.

The past two years have also been spent understanding the root causes of knife crime and we looked to young people themselves to help us find a solution. Having spent time listening to young people, we recognize the importance of projects that are genuinely youth-led and truly rooted in the local community. We believe that violent crime is a youth and community problem, and solutions must therefore be youth-led and com-munity-driven.

Our response is ourspace, a youth-led initiative that aims to reduce knife crime by engaging young people in deprived areas. We provide creative resources and facilitate opportunities for young people within the multitude of creative industries that thrive in east London. ourspace provides a platform

from which young people can develop their employability and discover the creative possibilities on their doorstep. By providing a sense of ownership and purpose, we work to bridge the gap created by the influx of development in east London which affects the young people who already live there: a key cause of knife crime.

We have designed and implemented a model for collaboration between young people and creative professionals, which we have named "Creative Partnerships". All projects are run by young people, for young people, with the support of the creative industry. To date we have recei-ved an overwhelming amount of support and we continue to partner, collaborate and join-up with the local community to meet the demand which has arisen from ourspace and the opportunities it offers.

The success of aak today is down to an entire team of young volunteers, some fellow art students, and some young people who have been born and brought up in the estates in east London. We need to continue to work together with the support of the creative indus-try to provide sustainable opportunities for young people, both involved, and at risk of violent gang culture. Although the charity has been successful beyond our hopes, we're at a critical point. We need to raise funds to implement our ambi-tious youth projects on a larger scale.

ANTONY GORMLEY (OBE)

the works

—antony gormley—

One of Britain’s most celebrated con-temporary sculptors, antony gormley is known best perhaps for his large-scale public works: the Angel of the North, Another Place, Event Horizon and One & Other. gormley's work is also deeply intimate, however, concerned with the spaces within and around the human body – using his own in many of his works. He has studied at Cambridge, Central Saint Martins, Goldsmiths and the Slade and his career began with a solo exhibition at the Whitechapel

Art Gallery in 1981. Since then, gor-mley has enjoyed solo shows at major galleries worldwide; his work is also collected internationally. gormley’s story speaks of true artistic success: he won the Turner Prize in 1994; in 1997 he was made an Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his services to sculpture; in 2003 he became a Royal Academician. Powerful, intriguing and unsettling, gormley's work invites us to reflect on our own place in the world and our very physicality.

LEAGAS DELANEY

the works

—leagas delaney—

The advertising agency leagas delaney which has worked with brands such as The Courtauld Institute of Art, the Tate galleries, the BBC and The Guardian, has supported art against knives from the word go. After assisting with the initial auction in 2009, they continue to help by donating office space to Katy and Oliver. This “space” has grown so-mewhat over the past two years, and they now kindly donate their entire re-ception area, plus plenty of time and resources, to the aak team of over 20 young volunteers.

leagas delaney also helped to raise awareness of art against knives with a memorable launch campaign that put the ear back on Vincent Van Gogh’s infamous Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear, Easel and Japanese Print. It was a huge success, with all the national press running the ad for free, as well as numerous London poster sites.

The brief for this year’s idea came to leagas delaney creatives Pete Davies and Adam Rimmer. “We wanted to create something that conveyed art

against knives as simply and memo-rably as the previous Van Gogh cam-paign”, explains Pete.

“So we started to think how the world of art could show a knife being rende-red useless, and very quickly our minds turned to Dali’s melting clocks.”

The final piece replicates Dali’s The Per-sistence of Memory —one of the best-known pieces of art ever produced— and was painted by Martin Hargreaves using oil on canvas.

As well as forming the centrepiece for the invitation to tonight’s auction, the painting will also be seen as a framed work of art in London press and on pos-ters, to publicise the art against knives gallery now open in BoxPark, Shoreditch.

the works

—f.y.i—

fyi: focused young individuals is a co-llection of 6 photographs of young creatives shot, produced and promo-ted by over 50 young people in colla-boration with local social enterprises and creative professionals. We believe in joining up, not starting something new. Our youth-led initiative, OurSpace, supports existing youth providers who

work successfully with young people on the ground. art against knives collabo-rated with existing youth organisations in the community to design a project that allowed us to collaborate to share skills and resources. With youth unem-ployment reaching a new high and the recent London riots rocking Hackney, this exhibition is timely.

THE RESULT OF A YEAR LONG PROJECT RUN BY ART AGAINST KNIVES

“I grew up in the estates that OurSpace is targeting, and I got involved because I never had a positive role model, which caused me to have run-ins with the law. I want to be able to be a positive role for younger people and pass my

experiences onto them...”

—Kayla Whiting, 21, OurSpace Project Manager —

Page 23: ART AGAINST KNIVES Catalogue

The partners involved all work with young people, promoting postitive and creative opportunities as an al-ternative. The exhibition was displa-yed as a series of site-specific insta-llations wich are all based in London’s East End- each image was shown alongside a text detailing the young person’s story.

We believe that our focus on provi-ding creative opportunities for young people, at risk of a future involvement in gang culture and knife crimes, can make a real difference.

HUSSEIN CHALAYAN (MBE)

the works

—hussein chalayan—

British/Turkish Cypriot fashion desig-ner chalayan graduated in Fashion Design at Central Saint Martins in 1993 and has gone on to be one of the most celebrated, innovative and talented people in fashion today. Unexpectedly combining fabric, form and technolo-gy, chalayan approaches his work in a markedly philosophical and concep-tual manner: references are made to culture, history and politics. His sculp-tural and experimental garments are

often created as extensions of the body or representing the wider envi-ronment around it. Crowned British Designer of the Year twice, chalayan has also exhibited his work in presti-gious institutions including the Victo-ria & Albert Museum and the Mode et Textile Museum at the Louvre in Paris. He has also created a significant body of art works – as a sculptor, film-maker and animator – which are collected in-ternationally.

support such a positive initiative which has risen from a deeply worrying issue.”

MARIOS SCHWAB

the works

—marios schwab—

Greco-Austrian designer marios schwab studied fashion at both Berlin’s Esmod School and London’s Central Saint Mar-tins, leading to the establishment of his own London-based label in 2005 and his achievement of Best New Designer at the British Fashion Awards the fo-llowing year. schwab's intelligent, allu-ring and theoretical designs are sold worldwide and have been worn by Kate Moss, Kylie Minogue, Chloe Se-vigny, Thandie Newton and Clemence Poesy. In 2009, schwab was appointed

creative director of US label Halston. schwab undertook a collaboration with Swarovski in the creation of this black Bodycon dress. The artful slash across the chest, a poignant reminder of the devastating effects of knives, reveals a glittering array of these crystals, perhaps signifying the good that can come from the bad. This is precisely what Art Against Knives, founded in the wake of Oliver’s tragic attack, ho-pes to show. The dress itself is pure beauty; schwab at his peak.

MARY KATRANTZOU

the works

—mary katrantzou—

London-based Greek fashion desig-ner mary katrantzou graduated from Central Saint Martins School of Art and Design having also studied architectu-re at Rhode Island School of Design. Her Saint Martins graduation show collection in 2008 was nominated for the Harrods and the L’Oreal Professio-nal Award and her first Ready-to-wear collection was shown at the autumn/winter London Fashion Week in the same year. Her collections are now available worldwide. In 2010, she was

awarded the coveted Swiss Textiles award. Her designs show a strong ar-chitectural influence: terraces, Italian mansions, and furniture are among the images that have been printed on katrantzou's clothing, but the clothes themselves also become architectural pieces. She often integrates the two-dimensional and three-dimensional, playing with optical illusion and surpri-sing form. katrantzou's clothing has a uniqueness and intricacy that places it somewhere between art and fashion.

“I support ART AGAINST KNIVES, because I know so well that Oliver's fate of being violently

attacked on his way home could have equally happened to me. Everybody deserves to feel safe on the streets of London, no matter what their

sexual orientation, colour or gender be. The underlying ills that create knife crime need to be tackled at source, and AAK is approaching

this with a community-based approach that tries to really make a difference. AAK cannot

stop crime singlehandedly, but courageous citizens like those behind the

charity can push the authorities to do their bit, so that we can all enjoy living together

in RESPECT and SAFETY.”
