Analysis

1st Phase of construction:

The defenders play wide open, with Arteta getting back to their line.

Ramsey supporting and create a passing line to combine with the

right wing. Arteta gets to Ramsey spot to cover his space.

2nd Phase:

Ramsey and Wilshere move to the wings, trying to create numeric

advantage in the wings. This should unbalanced the defensive trio

and create a lot of space in the back.

Pattern movements:

Direct combinations from the defenders with the two midfielders.

Ball on the wings with support of Wilshere and Ramsey.

Quick change of the side of the ball, to caught the defense

unbalanced.

Despite the loss, Arsenal made an offensive performance

against United with 20 shots and 23 crosses.

The problem was the efficiency. 5% with the shots made

(although De Gea was brilliant with 7 saves), and 23 crosses

with only 4 successful (around 17%).

Analysis

1st Phase of construction:

The three defenders play open wide and the defensive midfielder

comes to support and create a passing line. Lack of players settled

on the center midfield.

2nd Phase:

Manchester doesn’t construct with short and supported passing.

They play directly to the wings for the cross, or directly with the

forwards, hoping they can bild something with their concentration

on that zone.

Pattern movements:

Ball on the space for the wingers to cross, on the defensive

backspace.

Direct style of play – long passes.

Counter attack preferences.



Manchester United was very organized and only got into

offense with some certainty. The 10 shots, with 20% precision

and 10% efficiency are an exemple of that.

They opted to play in fast transitions, so, they didn’t try to

create too much from the lines, finishing the game with 0%

efficiency in crosses.

Analysis

Defensive Transition:

When they’re caught in fast transition Arteta get in line with

Mertesacker and Monreal, and Wilshere and Ramsey make

the pressure on the ball with the help of the center back that

stays with the 2 forwards – defensive man to man with the

forwards.

In defensive organization Arsenal opted for a medium

pressure line, and concentration on the ball area, trying to

make Manchester United to direct style of play. The

concentration on the center was due to the need of winning

the second balls.

Arteta, Mertesacker and Monreal stayed with Di Maria,

Rooney and Van Persie, the two side backs with Valencia

and Ashley Young, leaving only Fellaini to organized the

game. Despite his defensive hability, he doesn’t stand for his

offensive capacity, so Manchester United was obligated to

play directly to the forwards or the wings. Where they were

in disadvantage.

Analysis

Arsenal lost most of the balls in secure areas. But they way they pressure the

ball – really high on the pitch, make them vulnerable to counter attack. That’s

how they lost the game.

Defensive Transition:

Manchester United didn’t attack zone of the ball when they

lost it. They get back and organized themselves. They

waited for Arsenal in their defensive midfield with two clear

lines to avoid the direct combinations of Arsenal’s midfield

and defense.

Valencia and Young assumed the position on the sides, and

the 3 defenders concentrate on the center to oppose the

Arsenal combinations between Wilshere, Oxlade-

Chamberlain, Alexis and Welbeck.

Manchester United midfield and defensive lines were always

together keeping the concentration to avoid the short pass

type of game Arsenal usualy presents.

Analysis:

We can see the difference between these charts and the Arsenal ones.

Manchester didn’t take too much risk, and they got their strategy rewarded with

the victory with a fast attack and a counter attack to sentence the game.

Strategies

Although Arsenal tried to keep their identity, they lost the game. Essencialy because of the space they left on the back,

balanced offensively with the lack of danger Manchester United was giving in the game. Manchester played with their weapons.

A lot of concentration, the players well together and focused and taking advantage of Di Maria and Rooney hability to counter

attack. Maybe they got a little lucky, but they try to find it with the way they keep pushing the game for them with fast transitions.

Result

Maybe Wenger found the result unfair, but the fact is, they lack of efficiency. With better statistics in every attacking parameters,

they should have score way earlier than Manchester United. Then, in disadvantage they balanced themselves even more,

letting space for Ronney and Di Maria taking the 2 goals lead. It was a good performance from both teams, winning the one who

defended meter and got better efficiency.
