The ADF Arts for Recovery, Resilience, Teamwork and Skills (ARRTS) Program is an arts-based recovery program for ADF members who have been wounded, injured or become ill whilst in service. The program assists personnel to address wellbeing issues and individual recovery. Injuries or illnesses do not need to be service related or as the result of operational deployment. ARRTS is a flexible training program which responds to individual abilities and aims to improve confidence and resilience through the medium of the arts. The acquisition of new skills in a positive learning environment encourages improved self- esteem, initiative and team work. The ARRTS program offers three creative streams and civilian mentors, experts in their artistic stream, offering the participant skills training which is incremental and tailored to the ability of each individual. Exposure to new experiences, sharing stories, fears and concerns with like-minded peers will assist individuals to reconnect with families, the community and the workforce. Previous participants have reported significantly improved well-being including increased self confidence with an enhanced ability to ‘move on’ in their lives directly as a result of participating in the program. An improvement in communication was also reported. Evaluations undertaken from the various ARRTS programs support the benefits reported by participants. It is expected service personnel continuing in service and those who will shortly transition to civilian life will benefit from participation.
