Welcome to the department of Geology and Mineral Resources Engineering (IGB) 1 WORKRESIDENCE PERMIT The following does not apply to students from the Nordic countries or students staying in Norway for less than 3 months All international students who are going to stay in Norway for more than 3 months must have a valid residence permit Applying for a work permit can be done from your home country or if you have a visa or are allowed to be in Norway for 3 months without a visa you can apply once you arrive in Trondheim In order to renew a residence permit a student must prove that he or she has satisfactory study progression Renewals should be submitted at least one month before the current permit expires and must be submitted to the Trondheim police department Once submitted application processing times for work permits vary anywhere from 1-4 months A letter confirming you have been granted a workresidence permit will be sent in the mail With the letter you must go back to the UDI office with your passport and picture to get the permit stamp Application forms for Non EU EEA countries can be found here Application forms for EUEEA countries can be found here

2 COMPULSORY HEALTH CHECK According to the immigration regulations citizens from certain countries are required to present themselves for a tuberculosis examination if they will be staying in Norway for more than 3 months The examination must be done within three weeks after your arrival in Norway You will get more information about the health check at the Immigration Department at the Police station Address Erling Skakkes gt 40 Leuthenhaven entrance AC Phone 72540850 Opening hours Monday and Tuesday from 0830 to 1030 3 NATIONAL POPULATION REGISTER (FOLKEREGISTERET) The following does not apply to students from the Nordic countries or students staying in Norway for less than 6 months After you have your residencework permit stamped in your passport you must register at the National Population Register in order to apply for a national ID-number The National Population Register is located in the same building as the Tax Assessment Office After filling out the form Notification to the National Registry (NR) of move to Norway from abroad (shown below) you can expect to receive your ID number within approximately 2-3 weeks

National Population Register Tax Assessment Office Address Kongens gate 87 7012 Trondheim Opening hours Mondays-Fridays from 0900 to 1500 4 TAX DEDUCTION CARD (SKATTEKORT) Everyone who works in Norway must have a tax card The tax card shows how much tax your employer must deduct before paying your wages You hand in your tax deduction card to your employer Make sure that your employer has received your tax card before you get your first salary otherwise a 50 tax will automatically be withheld from your salary If you have paid too much tax you will get it back in your annual tax refund Bring along A valid passport Residence or work permit Your employment contract with your Norwegian employer Your Norwegian national ID-number or D-number

Personal Tax return (Selvangivelse) You will receive an End of the Year-Certificate from your employer with basic information on salary allowances earned in Norway This information is to be included in the personal tax return A personal tax return will be sent to your registered address in January February in the year following the income year The tax return is to be completed and submitted to the tax authorities by 30 April in the year following the income year Tax settlement notice (Skatteoppgjoslashret) Once the tax assessment office has processed your tax return you will receive a tax settlement notice It contains information about the income on which tax has been calculated how much tax your employer had deducted and whether you have paid too much or too little tax The tax settlement notice arrives in either June or October An information brochure is available here As a foreigner you may be entitled to a 10 tax reduction the first 2 years you are working in Norway Nordic nationals can find more information about taxes in Norway here For further information on the Norwegian tax system and regulations go to wwwskatteetatenno 5 BANK ACCOUNT In order to get a bank account in Norway you need a national ID-number It is possible to open an account without first having a personal number in which case you will be granted a ldquoD-numberrdquo When opening an account it often helps to specify to the banking consultants that you are a PhDStipendiat at NTNU

6 INCOME If you are an employee at NTNU your salary is normally paid on the 12th each month If you need to arrange for advance payment contact the Administration at the department 7 SOCIAL SECURITY INSURANCE An overview over the Norwegian Social Insurance Scheme can be found here When you receive a national ID-number you become a member of the Norwegian National Health Scheme (Folketrygden) and you will be asked to select your own personal doctor among the doctors available at the medical centers in Trondheim You can select your doctor by visiting NAV You will need your ID-number for this If you need to see a doctor and are not registered at a particular medical centre please contact Gloslashshaugen Medical Centre Gloslashshaugen Medical Centre Address Richard Birkelands vei 5 Gloslashshaugen campus Phone 73 59 32 80 (Phone lines are open 830-1430) E-mail GloshaugenLegesentersitno In case of an emergency contact the Emergency clinic at St Olavs Hospital Phone +47 73522500 Ambulance 113 NTNU does not cover any insurance against theft etc during your stay in Norway You are therefore advised to take out an insurance policy The Norwegian Student Union provides information regarding individual plans for accident and injury insurance (in Norwegian only) Students coming from EUEEA countries who have a European Health Insurance Card are entitled to immediate medical help in Norway and while traveling in EEA countries Students from non-EU countries are not covered by Norwegian health insurance if they travel out of the country It is therefore advisable that you purchase an individual travel insurance policy in order to reduce any personal costs 8 HOUSING If you are a Quota student you are entitled to university housing and the Office of International Relations at NTNU is responsible for helping you If you are not a quota student you are responsible for your own housing A good place to start and a website that is in English is wwwutleiemeglerenno Although it is only in Norwegian the best website to search for housing is wwwfinnno Another few options (Norwegian only) are wwwhybelno wwwtindeno wwwiboligno wwwfrostno wwwhtlno wwwutleieno wwwbolignorgeno wwwbybroen-boligno wwwvollno Trondheim Municipality

Finding housing in Trondheim can be quite challenging especially if you arrive during the autumn months If you have contacts or friends in Trondheim we suggest you touch base with them The nettopp link is also very helpful for finding flats and furniture The department might be able to help you with short term accommodation as you look for permanent housing elsewhere Rates are typically NOK 250-300night or approx NOK 4000month The NTNUSINTEF Foundation offers housing but the waiting time is typically over a year Applications can be found here 9 LIVING IN TRONDHEIM ndash LIVING IN NORWAY You have chosen to come to Trondheim In Norway you will meet new challenges new systems and new people You will learn about new values and traditions and a new culture wwwNyinorgeno can help you to find out about your rights opportunities and obligations in Norway when you have been issued a work permit Cold country Warm people There are no palm trees in Norway But in the summer we enjoy periods with warm weather and due to the Gulf Stream the coastal areas are rather mild in the winter time Nevertheless you should bring warm clothing when visiting Norway in the winter Norwegians have a reputation of being somewhat introvert and difficult to get to know But this is just a first impression Norwegians are generally welcoming and open minded towards foreigners If we dont take the first step dont be afraid to start a conversation We have a direct way of communicating and often state our opinions without holding anything back Clothing It is always a good idea to bring rainproof clothing and warm waterproof shoes or boots You should bring a warm jacket and a good pair of snow boots with thick soles Gloves scarf and a beanie to cover your ears can also be helpful during the winter Norwegians are very fond of the outdoors and enjoy taking long trips during the weekend Be sure to bring some sports clothes if you want to participate in some of these activities More about the climate can be found here Helpful links Norwayinfo Trondheim Kommune NTNU Office of International Relations Student life in Trondheim Brochures gives an overview of the university student organizations and lots of maps iTorgno Put in announcements for free

ContactInterest Networks Dion is the interest organization for Doctoral Candidates at NTNU NTNUI The Universityrsquos sports teams Buddy Program Arranged by the Office of International Relation this offers students the chance to be paired up with other Norwegian students on campus ISU International Studentsrsquo Union arranges low cost activities for international students through the year ESN Erasmus Student Network also arranges activities in town Student Union (Samfundet) If itrsquos happening in Trondheim itrsquos happening here This is a great place to have a cup of coffee or a beer and to see some great concerts and shows while meeting lots of new people Dictionaries Lexin TriTrans Map of Trondheim You can find a map from the cityrsquos main homepage is here 10 NORWEGIAN LANGUAGE COURSES Depending on when you arrive in Trondheim you have several options if you want to take Norwegian classes The Office of International Relations is your contact for applications for Norwegian language courses PhD students typically apply for acceptance to the ldquoTrinndeltrdquo courses that are held each semester usually at the Dragvoll campus Please note that these classes tend to fill up very quickly It is also worth noting that if you plan to take one of these courses that you attend 80 of classes and complete the course assignments June 1 is the deadline for fall classes November 1

If you are unable to attend NTNU language classes you may want to try the Center for Adult Learning (

12 PICTUREDISSERTATION TITLEABSTRACT As soon as possible after your arrival you will need to send us an electronic picture (passport style color) as well as your working title (in English) and a 4 line abstract of your project which will be used for our online PhD link as well as our annual report Please send this to iigbinfoivtntnuno 13 ITrsquoS LEARNING NTNU students have access to ITrsquoS LEARNING This is an online meeting place for you your fellow students and your teachers 14 SIGNING UP FOR NTNU CLASSES You can sign up for classes after your PhD application has been submitted and you are registered in the system Registering for classes must be completed online through wwwStudWebno 15 HOW TO REGISTER FOR EXAM When the application and admission are accepted the candidate has to register himherself for exams This can be done at httpstudwebntnuno Deadlines for exam registration are 15 September (fall) and 15 February (spring) For individual study syllabus (DIXIL) the candidate has to register at IVT Faculty (Faculty of Engineering Science and Technology) and the results is to be sent - via Department pt Office Manager - to Gerd Juliussen PhD courses taken at foreign universities must also be reported to Gerd Juliussen These courses must be clearly defined as PhD courses and should have a passed grade according to a B compared to NTNUrsquos scale to be accepted If the student wants to change courses heshe has to send an application to Gerd Juliussen via the Department The changes must be approved by the supervisor The candidate must clearly indicate in the application which courses are to be re-moved from the study plan and which will be taken instead and must therefore register for exams for the new courses All students must have legal schedule for the study When it comes to Master courses (graduate engineer) the candidate must go to the Office of Student Service in Gloslashshaugen campus and pay the semester fee before heshe can register for exams

Make an agreement with your supervisor and speak with Knut Olav Solem about your computer options All employees are saving their work at the M directory This is your personal space on the server and it is accessed by logging on to the NTNU network The computer will map you directly to the M directory when you log on to the NTNU network if not you can do this manually by choosing map network drive under my computer Backups are routinely made of this directory If there are some documents you would like to share with others at the Department use K directory

Library We have a library in rom A-243 (code GEOBIB) We have a great collection of geological and scientific literature (books periodicals lexical reference books maps atlas and dictionaries)

Welcome to the department of Geology and Mineral Resources Engineering (IGB) 1 WORKRESIDENCE PERMIT The following does not apply to students from the Nordic countries or students staying in Norway for less than 3 months All international students who are going to stay in Norway for more than 3 months must have a valid residence permit Applying for a work permit can be done from your home country or if you have a visa or are allowed to be in Norway for 3 months without a visa you can apply once you arrive in Trondheim In order to renew a residence permit a student must prove that he or she has satisfactory study progression Renewals should be submitted at least one month before the current permit expires and must be submitted to the Trondheim police department Once submitted application processing times for work permits vary anywhere from 1-4 months A letter confirming you have been granted a workresidence permit will be sent in the mail With the letter you must go back to the UDI office with your passport and picture to get the permit stamp Application forms for Non EU EEA countries can be found here Application forms for EUEEA countries can be found here

12 PICTUREDISSERTATION TITLEABSTRACT As soon as possible after your arrival you will need to send us an electronic picture (passport style color) as well as your working title (in English) and a 4 line abstract of your project which will be used for our online PhD link as well as our annual report Please send this to iigbinfoivtntnuno 13 ITrsquoS LEARNING NTNU students have access to ITrsquoS LEARNING This is an online meeting place for you your fellow students and your teachers 14 SIGNING UP FOR NTNU CLASSES You can sign up for classes after your PhD application has been submitted and you are registered in the system Registering for classes must be completed online through wwwStudWebno 15 HOW TO REGISTER FOR EXAM When the application and admission are accepted the candidate has to register himherself for exams This can be done at httpstudwebntnuno Deadlines for exam registration are 15 September (fall) and 15 February (spring) For individual study syllabus (DIXIL) the candidate has to register at IVT Faculty (Faculty of Engineering Science and Technology) and the results is to be sent - via Department pt Office Manager - to Gerd Juliussen PhD courses taken at foreign universities must also be reported to Gerd Juliussen These courses must be clearly defined as PhD courses and should have a passed grade according to a B compared to NTNUrsquos scale to be accepted If the student wants to change courses heshe has to send an application to Gerd Juliussen via the Department The changes must be approved by the supervisor The candidate must clearly indicate in the application which courses are to be re-moved from the study plan and which will be taken instead and must therefore register for exams for the new courses All students must have legal schedule for the study When it comes to Master courses (graduate engineer) the candidate must go to the Office of Student Service in Gloslashshaugen campus and pay the semester fee before heshe can register for exams
