What’s Happening in Level 1?

Assistant Principals

Well done to the Level Ones on almost completing their first term of school! We are all so proud of how well you are doing! The students have been working hard on persuasive writing over the last few weeks. We are having fun coming up with great arguments as to what animal makes the best pet and which toy is the greatest. Ask your kids about their arguments and ideas, I’m sure they’d love to share them with you. This week our letter focus has been B and next week we will do a revision of all the letters we have learnt about this term. In maths we are learning about shapes and next week will focus on length. Don’t forget to use Mathletics regularly. It is also great practice for the kids to log into their account themselves, so try to avoid doing it for them.

We still require a family photo from many families. Can you please provide us with one, to help us with our inquiry unit, Family Ties?. Thanks! Thank you to everyone who has volunteered their time to help out in the classroom. The kids really enjoy having you in the room and we really appreciate the extra assistance. The fete is only a few days away! If you can please give up a little of your time on the day and support our wonderful school fete, please go to the website and pop your name down. This amazing community event needs your support! http://www.appsfete.com/ PLEASE HELP!!!! Have a great week The Level 1 Team

Camping Program at APPS. Our Foundation students attend camp! Well, it’s a step towards our camping program anyway with a Big Breakfast that will happen in term 3. We have a successive camping program at APPS that looks like this:

Level 1 - ‘Big Breakfast’

Level 2

Fun for Ones (games session and BBQ after school)

Sleepover at school (Year Twos)

Level 3 – 2 night camp

Level 4 – 4 night camp The year 1s participate in ‘Fun for Ones’ next Tuesday afternoon and the year 2s have their sleepover on Wednesday night. Jenny Semken will be sleeping in the first aid room to have respite from the noise. She is the only one allowed to use the “experienced teacher” card for this event! The other teachers will be in amongst the giggles which go late into the night! It’s going to be a blast!! Staff Conference Last Thursday and Friday the staff went to the gorgeous Yarra Valley for our annual conference. Day one involved revisiting our differentiation journey. The first session focussed on our work from Melbourne University, along with research based mes-sages which further deepened our understanding of classroom practice. There was a workshop session based upon our individual professional learning needs. We then explored the work of Kathy Paterson and how we can use language and literacy projects to address diverse learning needs, backgrounds and cultures at APPS. Day two focussed on a refresher course on Restorative Practices. Marg Armstrong, a world renowned presenter on Restorative Practice facilitated a fasci-nating and engaging workshop and gave us some terrific new ideas to use in our classrooms. It was once again a terrific conference full of wonderful theory based learning and practical workshops. See you at the fete!! Tim and Annette

We have been having a great time on our excursions to Schwerkolts Cottage learning about how life has changed in Mitcham. Our Fun for Ones and Grade Two Sleepover are next week so please bring those permission forms back! Another reminder that the Fete is this Saturday. It would be great to see as many level 2 parent volunteers on the day as possible. See you there! The Level 2 Team

What’s Happening in Level 2?

With the wink of an eye Term 1 is almost over. There are some great

learning events still to come, all in the last week of term!

Of course one of the most exciting is the fete this week-end. We are looking forward to seeing some out of this world costumes! The Level 3 students have put their names down on rosters to help out on their class stalls. These stalls need the students to run them so please make sure that your child comes along at their allotted time. If there are parents who are free to come and help

with their child on the class stall that would be most appreciated. Pyjama Day is this Monday 21st March. Let’s hope it’s not too hot for the One-sie wearers! Level 3 teachers also have their planning day on Monday so the students will have lots of fun dancing, running and creating in their PJs. Don’t forget your gold coin donation which goes towards the Good Friday Ap-

peal.

Tuesday 22nd March we will be at the Croydon swimming pool participating in the Level 3 swimming sports. Thank you to parents who have volunteered and/or returned payment and permission envelopes. This is a new event and the Lev-el 3 teachers have jumped into action to organise a day of traditional and fun filled races. All the students will be able to stand up in the pool, giving everyone a chance to have a go

at events from freestyle to noodle races. On Wednesday 23rd March we will be participating in Har-mony Day. This is the conclusion to the Level 3 Co-operative Communities Inquiry Unit. It is a day to celebrate the cultural diversity of the Australian community. Classes will learn through a number of activities organised by the classroom teachers. It would be great if students could wear

a touch of orange on the day. There were lots of students camping, gaming, eating, movie watching and relaxing on the extra long weekend. It sounds like our Level 3 families

made the most of the break. The Level 3 Team Rachel, Clive, Nat, Louise, Danni and Kylie

In Level 1 we have been having fun learning how to use a computers. We know how to

turn them on and shut them down correctly

carry them safely

navigate around a webpage The interactive roll is a huge hit, with us touching a picture of our faces to let our teacher know we are here. We been exploring some great sites during literacy rotations to develop our letter sound understandings. In mathematics we use the Interactive Whiteboard to practice subitising and counting and to create some graphs. We are also beginning to use Mathletics to support our developing number skills. Wow, so much learning in just one term!

What’s Happening in Level 4?

Mathletics

We are enjoying our Family Life Incursions and have one more session next Tuesday. We encourage you to continue discussing and asking your children about the sessions. Last week the students brought home a sheet outlining a few questions to discuss together and it asks parents to sign it and bring it back to school This weekend is our School Fete! The Fete Committee are asking for more parents to sign up to the various fete stalls for this coming Satur-day. If you can spare a half hour, it would be greatly appreciated on the day. This term we have been exploring a unit called, ‘The Rhythm of Life’. As part of this unit we have explored five different body systems; circulatory,

respiratory, nervous, skeletal and digestive. Students have thoroughly enjoyed exploring and researching information about the body in standalone lessons and within our reading rotations. We will complete this unit next week with a post assessment in the students’ portfolios. We are excited to see evidence of their learning throughout the unit when comparing their pre and post assessment. A few weeks ago we sent a yellow form home asking for parents and students to sign up for eSmart Digital License. If you haven’t handed the form back, we are looking to start this program next week. ANTONIO PARK PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPETITION WINNERS Well done to the 90 students who entered the photographic competition this year – with over 240 photos the judge had an extremely difficult time choosing the best. CONGRATULATIONS to the following students who were rewarded for their great shots. Their photographs will be on display in the school foyer after the holidays.

I have another call out to our talented school community – do we have any arty parents or friends of the family who would like to assist with the setting up and painting of an environmental themed mural on the end of the Multi Purpose Centre? Call in, drop us a note or email if you can be of assistance. Many thanks in advance for your help. Janet Visual Arts teacher

Sustainable Schools News

Where has the term gone? The Sustainable Schools Committee have been discussing projects for the year and wanted to see if we had any school community members who might be able to help. Most people would know we raised money with the School Walkathon to extend the goat fencing – do we have any fencers or do you know reliable rural fencers who could give us a quote? The other project involves dismantling and creating new garden boxes along the path in the bush playground. Do we have contacts for timber sleep-ers and/or willing handy people who could help with construction of these? Please drop us a note or email and we will be in touch – many thanks in anticipation of your support. Janet and the Sustainable Schools team DO YOU WANT AN EXCITING SCHOOL HOLIDAY ACTIVITY? WHAT ABOUT A NOCTURNAL WILDLIFE PROWL IN YARRAN DHERAN NATURE RESERVE ON WEDNESDAY, 6TH APRIL FROM 6.30-9.00PM? This park is just out the back of our school (Ashburton Drive) and the free activity is being led by well-known local possum and wildlife expert Ray Gibson. More information is available on the COMMUNITY NOTICE BOARD outside the Office.
