2010
Many thanks to everyone who voted. Feel free to comment on this year’s Hot List by going to witf.org.
The editors are pleased to announce the winners of the 2010 Hot List. We hope you’ll not only see personal favorites on the Hot List but also discover new places to visit and businesses to patronize. Congratulations to all our winners!
Belvedere Inn Restaurant and BarThis is an ode to the simple salad. It’s not to say the cocktails at Lancaster’s Belvedere Inn aren’t worth a mention — oh, they are. Or the loveliness of a summer evening, wine goblet in hand, on the outdoor terrace overlooking Lancaster city. That’s worth a visit, too. Or the staff, who have turned the restaurant’s bar patrons into a warm community of regulars. No, this story usually starts with a simple head of fresh romaine. Grilled. A tangy Caesar dressing folds into the lettuce leaves; a topping of homemade croutons adds crunch. Maybe some tenderloin tips, if you’re feeling especially decadent. Simple? Maybe. But humble? Not at all. 402 N. Queen St., Lancaster. 717-394-2422; belvedereinn.biz — jennifer kopf
Arooga’s Grille House & Sports BarWhen it comes to food, few would dispute that homemade is always better. At Arooga’s, diners can find freshly baked rolls and scratch-made pizza dough, homemade sauces, soups and dressings, and fresh-cut fries and chips. And with 100 or more HD TVs in each location broadcasting sporting events from football to horse racing, they’re taking the term “sports bar” seriously. If you like the idea of being environmentally friendly even when you go out to eat, so do they: “Arooga’s is the first full-service restaurant in
Pennsylvania to go green,” says president Gary Huether. In an effort to reduce their carbon footprint, they’ve banned the use of Styrofoam, they recycle grease and cardboard, and they use nontoxic cleaning products, among other things. Plus, Arooga’s caters, delivers and has more than 80 menu items for less than $7.99. 7025 Allentown Blvd., Harrisburg; 717-920-9464 (WING). 1300 Camp Hill Bypass, Camp Hill; 717-730-9464 (WING). 4301 Linglestown Rd., Harrisburg; 717-909-9464 (WING). aroogas.com

Pheasant Field Bed & BreakfastPeople love staying at B&Bs because of the homey ambience and friendly interaction with the people who own the place. Pheasant Field Bed & Breakfast offers that and so much more. The B&B is located only four miles from downtown Carlisle, yet vacationers and business travelers feel worlds away from the hubbub of life. A nearby pond offers great birdwatching, the labyrinth invites guests to take a meditative walk, and the aroma of oatmeal pancakes in the morning is a reminder of the beautiful day ahead. “A couple from Las Vegas stayed here and spent over an hour on the front porch watching fireflies,” says Dee Fegan, owner/innkeeper with husband Chuck DeMarco. “They had never seen them before.” 150 Hickorytown Rd., Carlisle. 717-258-0717; pheasantfield.com — lori myers
Whitaker Center for Science and the ArtsTaking children to Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts is like blending vegetables into their food without them realizing they’re eating something that’s good for them. That’s because learning and fun go hand in hand at Whitaker’s Harsco Science Center, where kids can enjoy interactive exhibits, games and the worlds of geology, medicine and creativity. KidsPlace has places to play, and a Storybook Stage where tot thespians can act out their favorite fairy tales. They can experience a tornado or hurricane in Forces of Nature, or learn about nutrition at the Carnival of Health exhibit. One and all can experience a movie on a 65-foot-high screen at the Select Medical IMAX Theater. “My eight-year-old says it’s like going to a new place every time,” says Kathleen Keller, Whitaker’s vice president of marketing and sales. 222 Market St., Harrisburg. 717-214-2787(ARTS); whitakercenter.org — lori myers

American Music TheatreIt’s been 12 years since American Music Theatre’s curtains rose for the first time along Lancaster’s Route 30, welcoming audiences to a continually shifting repertoire — Abba tribute bands to the Beach Boys and Moody Blues, original revues to Tuesday Night Music Club, featuring bands from our region like Slimfit and The Vinegar Creek Constituency. The theater has become a solid part of the local musical landscape, and the performers seem to love it, too: The walls backstage are scrawled with Sharpied messages of thanks from more than a decade’s worth of artists. All that, more than 1,600 cushy seats, and great sound by locally based and world-renowned Clair Brothers. Break a leg. 2425 Lincoln Hwy. E., Lancaster. 717-397-7700; amtshows.com — jennifer kopf

Giant Food StoresIt’s a playground for the kids, a meeting place for events and a place to get advice from a nutritionist. Oh, and while you’re there, you can do your grocery shopping, too. While many may use their local Giant Food Store primarily as a source for fresh food, the chain, which began in Carlisle in 1923, has much more to offer. For example, in some locations, in-store chefs provide cooking demonstrations, an indoor play area allows children to have fun, surrounded by trained child-care providers, while their parents shop, and nutritionists are available to help with advice for a healthy food lifestyle — all for free. “We have beautiful fresh departments and are known for our support for local growers and producers,” says Tracy Pawelski, Giant’s director of public and community relations. Plus, they’re committed to giving back, donating nearly $15 million last year. Says Pawelski, “‘Living Here, Giving Here,’ our motto, defines our belief in giving back to our local communities and the people who live in them.” 888-814-4268; giantfoodstores.com — noreen livoti

Ten Thousand VillagesFor gifts that make a difference in newlyweds’ homes and in the lives of artisans who live hundreds, perhaps thousands, of miles away, check out the Ten Thousand Villages Wedding Registry. Items from nearly 40 countries are available, backed by 60-plus years of fair trade that provides a stable income in some of the world’s most challenged communities. “Couples choose to register with Ten Thousand Villages,” says marketing manager Mary Frey, “because they love our merchandise and they believe in the difference fair trade makes in the lives of artisans around the world.” The gift registry program dates to the early days of the retailer’s online history, which began in 2006. Since then, more than 4,600 gift registries have been established throughout the U.S., and more than 650 are currently open. 240 N. Caledonia State ParkCaledonia State Park dates back to 1902. Grandparents bring their grandchildren camping here because their grandparents took them. Park manager R. Bruce McFate doesn’t have a favorite time of year because every day at the wooded, historic park is his favorite. Nineteenth-century educator and abolitionist Thaddeus Stevens built an ironworks here. Invading Confederates torched the business, but remnants are still present, so weekend visitors can see 1830s artifacts in the blacksmith’s shop. Daily programs, including Friday and Saturday evening campfire gatherings, educate campers on historic and environmental themes. Getting in touch with nature, says McFate, “is proven to be very good for the soul.” 101 Pine Grove Rd. (Rts. 30 & 233), Fayetteville. 717-352-2161; www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/parks/caledonia.aspx — m. diane mccormick
GettysburgThe world knows Gettysburg for its 1863 battle, but today’s town has blossomed into a crossroads of history, art and culture. Find the work of local artists in lots of galleries. Stop by the Adams County Winery’s shop for a taste of Rebel Red. Catch a jam session or snag a rare Del McCoury CD at Arrow Horse Bluegrass. Hoist a pint at the Blue Parrot Bistro or sip a strawberry banana milkshake at the Cannonball Old Tyme Malt Shop. And don’t miss a chance to see a show at the Majestic, the spectacular 1925 theater with the $16 million makeover. www.gettysburg.travel — m. diane mccormick

Country Meadows Hershey The hot thing today at Country Meadows Hershey is Wii bowling. “We have an 86-year-old woman that just bowled 300,” says resident Ed Dempsey, whose team captured the coveted Leader Cup in a tournament among all Country Meadows campuses. At Country Meadows Hershey, they like to say that life gets better. Residents volunteer to make PB&J sandwiches for a soup kitchen; join exercise classes run by a full-time fitness coordinator; attend dances. Service levels, from independent living to memory support, include Pathways Restorative Services, for care that’s more intense than assisted living but not quite skilled nursing. 451 Sand Hill Rd., Hershey. 717-533-1880; countrymeadows.com — m. diane mccormick
RE/MAX It’s not your imagination. There are tons of RE/MAX signs on Central PA homes for sale. Market share by county ranges from almost one quarter to more than one half of transactions. More than 1,000 agents staff 50 offices. “Buyers and sellers get a better agent when they’re dealing with a RE/MAX agent,” says Lou Puliti, broker of record, RE/MAX Realty Associates, Camp Hill. ”They have a lot of designations. They’ve been in the business a number of years.” A good agent, he says, has a strong work ethic. “They like people. They like to help. They give of themselves.” remax.com

AAA Central PennIf you daydream about Scottish castles, the wines of Tuscany, or just high-fiving Mickey Mouse, it’s easy to turn those fantasies into reality. A simple phone call or visit to AAA travel agency will get you on the right path (or into the air) to your always-wanted-to-go-there destination. “We’re a full-service travel agency where AAA members get exclusive discounts,” says Cindy Brough, public relations manager for AAA Central Penn, one of 10 midstate branches. “The public is also able to use our travel agency services; in most cases it pays them to join AAA to receive those exclusive member benefits.” World-traveled AAA agents plan every detail of your itinerary — from flights and car rentals to hotel rooms and tours. Citing Australia, Mediterranean cruises, Alaska, Hawaii, China and Russia as popular requests, Brough adds, “Our goal is that every traveler has the vacation of a lifetime.” 2301 Paxton Church Rd., Harrisburg. 717-657-2244; aaa.com — lori myers

JDC PediatricsMost parents will tell you that the number-one thing they wish for their child is to be happy and healthy. Knowing your pediatrician wants the same — and proves it to you every time you visit — is priceless. JDC Pediatrics began in the 1950s, and now, with two offices and 10 board-certified pediatricians, is still dedicated to caring for children from infancy through adolescence. According to Lynda Bruno, practice administrator, conveniences including location accessibility, vaccine clinics and electronic medical records are among the things that set the practice apart. Their website, she says, is an extension of their care, providing links to health handouts for parents who may have questions, from “15 ways to soothe a fussy baby” to vaccine information for teenagers. Best Pet Care
Musselman’s Pet ParadiseParting is such sweet sorrow, particularly if you have to board Fido or Kitty while you’re away. The caretakers at Musselman’s Pet Paradise in Gardners go that extra mile in giving your canine or feline pet companion a doggone purrfect vacation. “We have available belly rubs and pet massages for our couch buddies, as well as small-group playtime with an in-ground swimming pool for our more active friends,” says Sandra Musselman, owner. “All pets have toys in each run, as well as television throughout the facility.” Pets enjoy home-cooked goodies while watching Animal Planet, and a bubble bath prior to going home. 2265 Upper Bermudian Rd., Gardners. 717-528-8123. — lori myers
