The first Arnold Classic Europe is a multisport event in which bodybuild-ing and the IFBB will have an important pres-ence with all the amateur categories and a great pro event.

On the 26th of March, at the opening of the second

edition of Mr. Europe Pro, IFBB President Dr. Rafael Santonja made a historical announce-ment – the Arnold Classic, the international multi-sport event which has been held yearly in Columbus (Ohio) for 23 years, will also be promot-ed in Madrid, Spain, on Octo-ber 8th and 9th. It is the first “Arnold Classic Europe”.

A HUGE EVENTFitness and bodybuilding fans were astonished. Indeed, Jim Lorimer, the great USA promoter, had already an-nounced it during the closing speech of last March’s Arnold Classic. However, only after President Santonja’s great news, message boards start-ed to buzz about the huge Eu-ropean event.The very fact that the Arnold Sports Festival promoter, Jim Lorimer, talked about the “Eu-ropean date for the Arnold” let you understand the qual-

ity of the European event – a spectacular multi-sport event with weightlifting, bodybuild-ing and fitness; a challenge for competitors and a great show for their fans. Both the best amateur and profes-sional bodybuilders will be offered a schedule like the traditional one in Columbus. Granted, Arnold Classic Eu-rope needs a few years to get the same number of partici-pants. And yet the USA edi-tion itself started up 23 years ago just as one professional bodybuilding show. The Euro-pean edition can jump on the shoulders of the giant USA event. Another thing is that Europeans are a big share of the USA event’s success – in-numerable European com-petitors qualified and took part in this longed-for event where Arnold Schwarzeneg-ger’s charisma maybe is the main ingredient. This is why a European edition includ-ing a spectacular professional bodybuilding competition was much needed. It was thanks

to the triple ally among Arnold Schwarzenegger, Arnold’s partner Jim Lorimer and Pres-ident Rafael Santonja. Fitness and bodybuilding will be im-parted a fresh impulse.

SPORTS, SPORTS…It is too early to give you all the details about the event. We already know some im-portant things, tough. The competitions’ venue is Palacio de Convenciones y Congresos Sur del Recinto Ferial de Ma-drid (IFEMA). There’s a ca-pacious five-star auditorium with a capacity of 2000 seats in the A zone and more than 1000 in the B zone. Surround-ing the auditorium, you may find a huge space for expo and different activities plus 14 conference rooms. The event schedule is being developed right now. There won’t be 46 disciplines as in this year’s USA Arnold Sports Festival, all the same the schedule is really interesting. Let’s see it.A great multisport program

ARM WRESTLINGAt the Arnold Weekend Europe an international event of arm wrestling will be held. This is another popular and spec-tacular competition where a high degree of strength is re-quested.

AMATEUR FITNESS & BODYBUILDINGFive years ago IFBB added an amateur competition into the USA Arnold Festival and that was the major reason it grew so popular. Any competitor has the dream to step on that stage and get that prestigious title. This year there were more than 500 competitors. Most of them were travelling from EU. European athletes competing in the Arnold Clas-sic Europe will have a lesser cost for travel and accommo-dation. About 300 competi-tors are expected for this first edition. There are 9 classes in all. Each class has its own divi-sion in weight and/or height. Two days are needed to carry out the whole competitions.

Other attractive events are in the process to be included in the program. Only the Track & Field races, including different ages categories, will incorpo-rate over 3.000 participants.

P R O F E S S I O N A L BODYBUILDINGA men’s professional body-building show, which will give Olympians the chance to re-verse the roles right after Joe Weider’s Mr. Olympia sched-uled in Las Vegas on Septem-ber 15th-18th. Pro competi-tors will be awarded by Arnold himself. A great reward on top of the money-prize.

STRONGMENA typical and popular event at the Columbus Arnold Festival is the strongman competition. Strongmen from countries typically devoted to strength training – North Europe, Bal-tic and Slavic countries – will be hugely attracted by this event. It will also be the oc-casion to get to know this dis-cipline better for all the other European countries.
