Well, I finally managed to rewrite all of my elites section. Trying to figure out which units would be

appropriate for the LotD with their equipment shortages, I got the idea to put a little spin on the

elites section. As mentioned, the LotD removed formal chains of command. That, and due to their

heavy losses, basically any form of Chapter Master, Captains, etc were lost. Apothecaries were

also mentioned as being gone. But, no mention of specialized troops such as Chaplains and

  • 8/8/2019 Army Codex1

    6/20

Librarians were mentioned. Because of this, I thought it may be plausible that one or two of these

Marines may have survived. Because there is no formal rank system to be spoken of, but these

troops may very well still exist, I thought putting them into an elites section with a 0-1 limitation

per army would be appropriate. That, and who wouldn't want the chance to convert and paint a

LotD Lib/Chappy? (I have also included the profile for the Damned Faustus, which was

completely thought up by Bannus. All credit goes to him.)

    Inferno

Calling upon the hellish energies of the warp, the librarian unleashes a fiery inferno that engulfs all

    enemy units surrounding him.

At the start of the Librarian's assualt phase, instead of attacking, the Librarian may use this power.

If successful, place a large blast template centered on top of the Librarian. All enemy units within

the large blast template suffer one Strength 4 AP 5 hit. Resolve this attack before any other units.

If an enemy unit must make a morale check due to losses, they will be at -2 Ld.

    Dirge of the Damned

Delving deep into the enemy's minds, the Librarian projects the cacophonous sounds of dying men

and wailing spectres from beyond into the ears of the oncoming force.

This power is used at the start of the Librarians Assault phase. If successful, any enemy unit within

12 inches of the Librarian fights at -1 WS and -1 BS. If an enemy unit within 12 inches of the

Librarian must make any kind of test involving leadership, they will be at -2.[/quote]

(Post taken and edited from the homegrown forum. I have combined my profile of Centurius with

that ofBannus' profile to achieve a happy medium. Plenty of thanks go to Bannus, as well as credit

for his comments, criticism, and help.

    ++HQ++

Now for the HQ section of the Codex. The tricky thing about HQ's in an LotD army is that the fluff

states they abolished all rank, so that they may be equal brothers in death. As such, it's really

hard to put up an HQ section for the LotD. Luckily, GW made Sergeant Centurius. For those of you

that don't know who he is, Centurius was basically the only specialized marine that was ever

viewed fighting with the LotD. He has a nifty skull thingy and looks pretty bamf. Seeing as how

he's the only marine viewed with any special ability, I think he should be the only HQ choice

available. Below are my updated rules for him (combined with those Bannus made):

of the Damned units (rounding up) may be deployed at the beginning of your first turn - so they

do not have to roll to arrive from reserve. The remainder of the Legion of the Damned units is

    rolled for as normal.

Slow and Purposeful: See main rulebook for details.

We Are Legion: Sergeant Centurius is often seen leading a large contigent of Damned

Legionnaires. If you include Sergeant Centurius in your army, then Legion of the Damned Squads

may be chosen as Troops and Elites selections.

Deathly Aura: His armor adorned in bone and flame, Centurius is a fearful sight to behold upon

the fields of battle. As if he came straight from the mouth of hell itself, Centurius inspires fear

amongst his enemies. All enemies in close combat with Sergeant Centurius are at -1 leadership for

any morale or leadership tests they must to make.

Animus Malorum: Sergeant Centurius is seen carrying the skull of what is presumed to be one of

the Fire Hawks Librarians and it is an immensely powerful psychic device.

The Animus Malorum may nullify psychic powers as a psychic hood with unlimited range (use

Centurius' Ld value) and also has the psychic power Smite with one additional effect - one

Damned Legionnaire removed as a casualty in previous turns may be "ressurected" (returned to

the tabletop) for every casualty inflicted on the enemy by this psychic power. These resurrected

Legionnaires must be placed within coherency of Sergeant Centurius' squad and remain a part of

his unit. You may not ressurect more Legionnaires than the army started with. No psychic test is

needed to use the Animus Malorum. The Animus Malorum may be nullified like a psychic power.

Sergeant Centurius is an HQ selection.

This project is pulled from another thread. I figured I'd move the project here as well as keeping it

in the thread, just in case the thread dies. Below are my various topic entries for this codex

Project. These have been updated from the forum postings in the topic in light of feedback from

    other members.

++Legion of the Damned Project Re-Revival++

Well, I had the idea to do a Legion of the Damned Codex a while ago, but yet again I found myself

falling out of the hobby due to being jobless and having no money. But I have a job now, which

means I can afford this little hobby again. Below is a previously posted project topic with a few

updates and such. Note, these are all my ideas. I haven't discussed any of this with anyone else,

so this is all coming straight out of my head. What I'm looking for here is comments, criticism,

new ideas, and any other feedback you can give. And YES, I am aware that the LotD have their

own Codex entry in the new dex. But, I don't find it adequate. This project is geared to people who

want to play an entire army of these guys, like myself. So, below is my previous post, as well as

some new additions and ideas: (Note: I'm modeling this project after the 4th ed codex setup due

to personal preference. Also, some of this topic was saved from a previous topic that was started

before the release of the 5th ed codex. So, if you read anything like "They will be recieving "x" in

the 5th ed codex," just take that as me not going back and rewriting it as "They have recieved

    "x.")

The Legion of the Damned are a very unique army. They come from nowhere to aid the Emperor's

finest when they are vastly outnumbered, outskilled, and just plain screwed They are the

definition of the living dead, back from wherever the hell they came from to wreak havoc upon the

enemies of the Imperium, and then disappear without a trace. With fifth edition coming out, the

Legion of the Damned are getting their own Codex entry as a squad choice. However,I do not

believe the entry for them does the force justice. I have taken it upon myself to remake the Legion

of the Damned and give them their own Codex. Feel free to comment and critique on what I have

chosen, as I only hope to improve this small army into something glorius that any 40k gamer can

    use.

If you are unfamiliar with the Legion of the Damned, this is where I will fill you in on what they

are. Below are quotes cited from various GW cannon sources, such as White Dwarf, the GW

websites, and others that will tell you what the LotD are really about. To know your force, it may

be a good idea to read up on their history, so here it is (in fragments, but it's better than nothing):

QUOTE (GW UK website @ Cursed Founding article)

    THE LEGION OF THE DAMNED

The Legion of the Damned is a legend amongst the Adeptus Astartes. Appearing as ghostly

apparitions to aid beleaguered Space Marines, this mysterious force has intervened in desperate

battles on numerous occasions. The legionnaires reportedly wear power armour painted black and

adorned with symbols of death, skeletons writhing in the flames of purgatory being a dominant

theme. Eyewitnesses report the visible areas of the Space Marines' flesh are in a state of decay,

lending the legionnaires a horrific, charnel aspect. The examination of starship debris recovered in the Maran sub-sector suggests a link between the

Legion of the Damned and the fate of the Fire Hawks Chapter. The Fire Hawks were declared Lost

in the Warp in 983.M41, twenty years after the entire chapter set out for Crow's World on a

counter-invasion mission against the Eldar. The Inquisition are unsurprisingly keen to discover if

the Legion of the Damned and the Fire Hawks are in fact one and the same chapter, and if so, how

they gained their mysterious and deadly abilities.

    Link.

QUOTE ( GW UK website @ Legion of the Damned article)

Of all the legends of the Imperium, one of the strangest is that of the Legion of the Damned. The

Inquisitors of Terra have amassed dozens of reports describing the inexplicable manifestation of

these otherworldly warriors upon battlefields were the warriors of Mankind battle without hope

against impossible odds. By all accounts their aspect is frightening and bizarre, a ghostly

chapters which guard Humanity from the ravages of heretics and alien invaders.

QUOTE ( White Dwarf United States Issue 223 @ pages 25-28)

    The Legion of the Damned

This month, from the cold darkness of the warp, come the Space Marines of the Legion of the

Damned. Read on for the latest sighting of these strange warriors, who ave appeared on countless

battlefields to defend humanity from its enemies...

Of all the legends of the Imperium, one of the strangest is that of the Legion of the Damned. The

(Fluff, written just below the article on page 25)

Legionary Jursk laughed coldly as he opened fire with his bolter. A handful of the weakling

guardsmen were punched off their feet by the eplosive shells and the rest retreated through a

bulkhead. As he strode down the corridor, Jursk looked around for other targets. There were none.

  • 8/8/2019 Army Codex1

    15/20

The blind fools of the Imperium were fleeing the wrath of the Alpha Legion like Cruxian Etherats

deserting a crippled starship. Directing two of his swuad to follow the guardsen who had run away,

Jursk led the rest of his squad further into the hive city. The Chaos Space Marine was almost

breathless in anticipation of the carnage to come.

As the squad advanced across an open plaza, its buttressed walls rising far above their heads,

desultary lasgun fire glanced harmlessly off their power armor. A hail of bolter fire soon silenced

all resistance. As he continued forward, Jursk was gripped by the strangest of sensations. For a

mere moment it seemed as if time had slowed; something had twisted or shifted in reality. Where

half a second before there had been now opposition, there now came a squad of Space Marines.

Their armor was adorned with symbols of death and fire and at first Jursk took them to be fellow

servants of the Dark Gods. Then the newcomers opened fire, a salvo of bolts slamming into the

Chaos Marines, smashing through Braq's armour and hurling him to the floor in a spray of crimson.

As Jursk and his men headed towards what little cover existed, they returned fire.

Through the intense firefight, the enemy squad advanced. Working himself into a better firing

position, Jursk was stunned to see no enemy dead littered the floor. Confused, he fired the

contents of a whole imagazine into one of the advancing figures, sending shards of armor spinning

away, knocking the Space Marine flat onto his back. When he looked again, ther was no signof the

felled warrior. The mysterious Marines charged; there was no battle cry as they stormed forward

in unnerving silence. Jursk narrowly fended off a blow from a chainsword, the whirling teeth

chewing through the barrel of his bolter. With a grunt, he thrust his opponent back and looked

around. Only he and Charak remained. Cursing the gods who had brought him to this place, Jursk

through himself at the deadly warriors surrounding him.

Lieutenant Gaspor looked around in amazement. Everywhere the Chaos renegades lay dead, their

armor torn and shattered as if by some unimaginably murderous force. Of the horror that had

brought them their doom, there was no sign.

    The Legion of the Damned

Certainly not a Codex Chapter, the origins of the Legion of the Damned have been lost in the

sands of time. These mysterious Space Marines are one of the great mysteries of the galaxy.

Appearing from nowhere, their presence can turn the course of a battle or be the spark required to

    win a great victory.

No one knows what summons the Legion of the Damned and the Imperial Tarot can predict their

coming only with great difficulty. The Space Marines of the Legion of the Damned eschew any

formal uniform or heraldry. All wear black armor bizarrely patterned with bones, skulls and flames,

but no two Marines appear to have the same markings. Nothing is known of the Legion's higher

organization or if indeed it has any. Certanly no Captain or Apothecaries or the like are known for

    the Legion of the Damned.

QUOTE ( White Dwarf United States Issue 224 @ pages 16-17)

"The Legion of the damned are an enigmatic force that appear as if from nowhere to help defeat

the foes of the Imperium. That they were once Space Marines there is no doubt, though which

Chapter they belonged to no-one knows - apart from the Legionnaires themselves, and they are

not saying. Whatever their past, they are now vengeful and merciless destroyers that strike

without warning, leaving only death and destruction in their wake. Their work done they disappear

once more, leaving no clue as to their nature, other than the devastating result of their

    battlecraft."

Unfortunately, I cannot post the rules created for the Legion of the Damned during that WD issue.

Even if outdated, I'm not about to break IP If you can get your hands on a copy of the issue,

though, I highly reccommend reading it. However, I can put down paragraphs of info that are

    important to the Legion's background:

    QUOTE

Where They Come From Nobody Knows...

The Legion of the Damned have a reputation for appearing suddenly and disappearing after a

battle equally as mysteriously. (Rules follow)

    Early Plasma Weapons

Legion of the Damned models use an early type of plasma weapon dating back to the time of the

Horus Heresy. At the time of the Horus Heresy plasma weapon techlology was at an unstable and

dangerous phase in its development. The plasma guns and pistols which could be carried and used

by a SPace Marine in power armour were prone to overheating and leaking energized plasma on

their unfortunate users. Nonetheless the devastatiing power of plasma weaponry made it too

potent to abandon and many Legions utilized it in a limited fashion anyway. In these times early

weapons were superseded by safer and more sophisticated plasma weapons, but for some reason

these more modern weapons are not used by the Legion of the Damned. (Rules follow)

QUOTE ( White Dwarf United States Issue 225 @ pages 12-13 (article on Veteran Sergeant Centurius)

The Legion of the Damned is a mysterious and unexplained occurence. In times of great adversity

the Legion will come to the aid of Space Marines in battle, turning crusing defeat into glorius

victory, or even protectin the Imperium from some terrible catastrophe.

Documented appearances of the Legion of the Damned are few and far between. They seem to

move throughout the galaxy coming to the aid of hard-pressed Space Marines in what appears to

be a completely random matter. However, further study ofImperial records shows a far more

startling fact: every single intervention by the Legion of the Damned has been of Extreme

Importance to the safety of the Imperium! Sometimes the value of their aid is immediately

obvious, helping Space Marines win a battle against the odds or defeat an evil heretic, or Chaos

Lord. In tother cases the benefits of their intervention may take centuries before the implication

becomes apparent. Many Inquisitors have tried to capture or intercept the Legion of the Damned, but all have failed.

Some have even been on the same battlefield, but evenents always conspire to prevent them from

even getting lose to the Legion, leaving them nothing more than mere witnesses after the event.

After the main battle, the Legion of the Damned disappear as mysteriously as they appeared, no

one has ever found any signs of a space ship or been able to trace any teleportation - they just

    disappear.

But the mystery doesn't end there. Almost nothing is known of the Legion's higher organisation.

Certainly there has been no sightings of any captains, apothecaries and such, with one exception:

a Legionanaire known as Centurius. Although, as with all Legion of the Damned, his armour

displays no rank or insignia save the usual symbols of death, it is believed that Centurius is a

veteran sergeant. Centurius is marked out from other Legion of the Damned by the archaic skull

that he carries known as the Anumus Malorum (souls of the damned). (Rules follow)

(Fluff, written within the left-hand box at the top of the article on page 13)

Of all the legends of the Imperium one of the strangest is that of the Legion of the Damned. Most

bizarre of all are the many corroborated accounts of these otherworldly warriors, their unexpected

appearance upon a desperate battlefield, and their sudden and inexplicable disappearance at the

battle's end. The accoun of Ultramarine Chief Librarius Tigirus is the most recent report of this

    mystery.

(Fluff, written within the right-hand box at the top of the article on page 13)

"On the third night of fighting the Orks took the Great bastion from us. Despair settled in our

hearts, for all hope of rescue was now gone. Of all our company I counted but thirty seven living,

and of these but twenty five unhurt. The Orks gathered about us in the darkness. The screeching

and cackling of their Gretchen haunted us as they mustered to the attack. An hour before dawn I

called the company to prayer and, sinc eour Chaplain was slain, we made our peace with the

    Emperor in battle fashion.

It was as I raised my eyes from prayer that I saw a strange host where moments before there was

nothing but darkness. At first I thought it some connivance of the Orks, but as the host advanced I

realised it was of Space Marines, though not of any Chapter under the Emperor's sun. Their

armour was coloured black and upon it was drawn chilling images of bone and fire, and on their

helms they bore skulls. As they advanced an eerie glow shrouded them and fire seemed to dance

about thair feet. Like the bones of men in the torment of purgatory they were, so that they looked

more like skeletons than living men. Yet not a sound did they make.

For a while I believed to be some phantasm, a vision of ancient times for I had heard the Emperor

grants to such sights to those of his warriors who face death in his name. But it was not so, for

soon the ghostly warriors reached the Orks' battle-din, and the Orks were wailing and crying in

their terror. We that remained watched the dark battle-brothers at their work, and never before or

since have I seen fighting such as I witnessed that dawn. Seizing the moment, I regrouped my

company, and led them to war. Yet there was little work left for us, for the Orks lacked stomach

for the fight. Soon we secured the GreatBastion once more and without further loss. Of the dark

    brotherhood there was no sign."

Jeebus that was a load to type Anyway, here are a few rule proposals for you.

While the fluff posted above isn't everything on the Legion of the Damned, it is quite a bit, and

honestly it's enough to start taking rules from it. To start, I am going to propose possible stats,

points costs, abilities, and equipment choices for the troops within the army.

    ++TROOPS++

From the fluff given, it is stated that all scouts/neophytes have been lost. As such, obviously the

only troop choice a Legion of the Damned force could field would be Space Marines, which really

isn't all that bad. Scouts do play a helpful role on the battlefield, but they are not a necessity.

    ++SPECIAL RULES++

  • 8/8/2019 Army Codex1

    20/20

In addition to the given rules in the new codex, obviously as Space Marines, they benefit from the

And They Shall Know No Fear special rule. But, on top of that, for fluff reasons I think the Fearless

special rule would also be a nice touch to these marines. They do come from the darkest depths of

hell to fight against the enemies of the Imperium, and they certainly aren't afraid to die. If

anything, they welcome it. This may be a bit overkill for your standard troop choice though, plus it

would apply to the entire army. But, this is why I have you guys

    ++EQUIPMENT++

As the Chapter is near it's end, equipment runs short within their lines. Much like in the 5th edition

codex, I would like to prevent min/maxing of weaponry in squads. It's cheesy to have a five man

squad with a lascannon and a meltagun. Simple as that. So, I also propose this rule:

    The Legion of theD

amned have suffered numerous casualties in their age, and thusly much oftheir specialized equipment has become scarce. As such, a Legion of the Damned squad

numbering less than ten models may only have one special or heavy weapon within the squad. If

the squad numbers ten models, a second special weapon or one special weapon and one heavy

    weapon may be taken.

Other than that, Bolters are standard equipment, and Frag and Kraks at +1/+2 pts like any other

marine army, and in my opinion, the equipment should be about done with.

    ++TRANSPORTS++

Because of the equipment scarcity and their low numbers, I don't see an army of rhinos or

razorbacks being very realistic. As the LotD seem to fade into and out of existance, transports are

not allowed within the army. This includes Rhinos, Razorbacks, and Land Raiders.

That's all I've got for special rules at the moment. C&C.
