From the Vicarage

November is the month of Remembrance. Sunday 8th November this year is Remembrance Sunday and 11 am on Wednesday 11th November is the anniversary of the end of the first world war. In other years we have been able to gather in numbers around the war memorials to remember those who have died or suffered in war, but this year due to Coronavirus we cannot. At the time of writing, in this area, we are limited to no more than six people gath-ered in any one place, indoors or outdoors. Those six, if from different households or bubbles, to be socially dis-tanced from each other.

Having ministered at a number of funerals and one wedding, I am aware of just how difficult this is. When we meet our family, we are drawn to them and instinctively close the gap between us. All of our instincts push us to-wards some form of physical contact albeit a handshake, a pat on the arm, or throw the restrictions out of the win-dow, and go for a full hug. We have the need to show our love, especially when we either haven’t seen them for a time or see them upset.

There has been a lot of talk about the Government imposed restrictions, and areas of the UK are in various forms of lock down or restrictions. People when interviewed on the radio or television invariably talk about the loss of their rights or the loss of their freedom to do what they want. Business owners talk about the potential loss of their business if they are not allowed to trade. This is all negative, pessimistic, cup half empty stuff. We seem to have lost sight of the fact that a hidden killer, Covid-19, stalks among us and is regrettably claiming new victims every day. So, the restrictions are not to remove our rights, or make our lives difficult, but are to preserve our lives, the lives of those we love, and the lives of those around us.

During any time of national crisis there are many acts of selfless sacrifice carried out by individuals and groups. Many of those are unseen and unremembered but vitally important to those who benefit. This time is no different. Whilst coronavirus is not that prevalent in this area, we can still show our love for neighbours, friends and families by wearing masks, sanitizing hands and leaving space just as if it was. By these steps we show in practical ways that we do “love our neighbours as we love ourself” and are willing to put ourselves out for their sake, a selfless act.

With every blessing

Alan Symonds

GLOW WORMS By Peter Crowter

When the lady glow worm is looking for love, She sends out a glow that is seen from above.

A male on the wing pleased to see the green light, Knows he’s on a promise much to his delight.

The glow worm’s a beetle and no worm at all, And could be described as an insect oddball. When it is a larvae it eats slugs and snails, But when it’s an adult then all eating fails.

When it is grown up it has one thing in mind,

The male seeks that light on the females behind. ‘Tis quite a good system I think you’ll agree, No misunderstanding when making whoopee.

When we first got married my wife Anne and I, We lived in a cottage perched up fairly high.

‘Twas Cooks Cary Cottage some of you may know, At night you could find it when glow worms did glow.

They lived on the bank between garden and road Each side of our gate was where most of them glowed.

Especially written for Ian Dibben who is conducting a glow worm survey.

Kingsdon Village Hall

Fund raising to maintain our hall

I have decided to try fundraising for the village hall as the income since the Coronavirus lock-

down has been negligible, but we still have to maintain the building.

We shall be holding a Kingsdon Christmas Grand Draw on Sunday 20th December in the hall un-

der social distancing with the first prize being a superb hamper worth over £250, donated by Alan

& Gillian Carnall, another top prize will be an envelope containing £100. Ian is giving Kingsdon

Honey and I will be donating a Christmas Cake, Yule Log, Christmas Drinks Hamper and paying

the cost of the licence and printing.

To help with the sale of raffle tickets we need more prizes, this is where kind Kingsdon residents

can help by donating prizes please, I would appreciate if you could leave these together with the

raffle ticket stubs in the delivery box in my porch at 4 Manor Close.

We have registered the raffle with SSDC and had the raffle tickets printed, which will be delivered

with this letter and a return addressed envelope to every household. Many thanks

Draft MINUTES OF THE KINGSDON PARISH COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON THURSDAY 8h October 2020 IN THE VILLAGE HALL AT 7.30pm

Parishioner comment time:

Question – village plan is virtually ready to go. It is on hold at the moment until the decision is made about the

potential build. It is unlikely that more changes will occur, all comments have been included. A parishioner was

wondering if there would be any further changes in light of covid and the focus on ecological issues because so

much has changed recently. D.Beswick would welcome examples.

We don’t know what the two issues are for the planning department to deal with regarding the Kingsdon Estate

planning application– we have only been told that there were two issues.

Present:

Mr David Beswick (Chairman), Mr B. Paine (Vice-Chairman), Mr A. Anderson, Mr G. Osborne (Parish Council-

lors); Mr K. Tridgell (RFO); Mrs Kate Hatt (Parish Clerk); plus 7 parishioners.

1. Apologies:

Mr D. Ruddle (County Councillor); Charlie Hull (District Councillor), T. Capozzoli (District councillor), Mr I

Dibben, Mrs S Mackay and Mr P. Waters.

2. Declarations of Interest:

None other than those already declared.

3. Minutes:

The minutes the monthly Parish Council meeting held on the 10thSeptember 2020, which had been previously cir-

culated, were proposed by G.Osborne and seconded by B.Paine , and unanimously approved and signed.

4. Matters arising not covered by agenda items:

D.Beswick has written objecting to the tree removal and copied in Phil Poulton.

K.Hatt email parishioners about use of community transport, even though this service is currently available to pa-

rishioners, there is currently no-one making use of it. Therefore it was concluded that the Parish Council would

not make a donation.

5. Chairman’s Report:

D.Beswick had a visit from a District councillor, the planning office is in somewhat disarray – several have left,

they are using agency workers, and a main employee has been absent with a family illness.

Therefore the Kingsdon Estate application has still not gone to the committee.

6. Correspondence:

Letter from SCC about the one unitary authority, who are holding virtual meetings for councillors to attend should

they wish. There is a survey that any councillor can reply to individually should they wish. Page 10

Page 11: Armistice Day€¦ · Armistice Day Armistice Day has been observed every year since 1919 with a two-minute silence at 11am on 11 November across the nation. This year on Remembrance

7.1 and 7.2 Finance- report and cheque signing.

These payments were proposed by G.Osborne, seconded by B.Paine, all in favour.

Financial Regulations

D.Beswick explained the need to make an amendment to the regulations to include provision for the RFO to carry out on-line banking within the same expenditure limits currently given to the Clerk. Relevant sections 3 and 6.

The words will be amended to included the RFO and increase the amount that the clerk and RFO can approve in emergency to £500.

Payments come through the clerk, but then the RFO pays them. Wording to change to reflect this.

B.Paine proposed these amendments, G.Osborne seconded, all in favour.

Action: K.Hatt to make the necessary amendments and forward to councillors.

8. Date of next meeting

12th November 2020.

A303 Stonehenge contractors named

The winning contractors for our archaeology and preliminary works have been announced. To make sure the project is ready to move on if we get the green light in November, the contracts have been awarded ahead of the decision to enable the two successful companies to start pre-planning their work. They are not expected to start on-site until late spring 2021.

One of the largest companies in the sector, Wessex Archaeology will be joining the project as archaeological specialists in a contract worth £35 million. They’ll be carrying out excavations and work to record and preserve any archaeological finds.

They will also be helping to raise awareness of the importance of the archaeology and landscape by running a public archae-ology and community engagement programme over the next few years. Local communities and visitors to Stonehenge will have a chance to learn about and engage with the heritage of the area.

Our £8.5 million preliminary works contract has been awarded to Osborne. They will be responsible for work that needs to be done before the actual construction starts, including site clearance, making sure we’ve protected local wildlife, getting us con-nected to water and some small road improvements.

Fireworks: the law

You cannot buy ‘adult’ fireworks if you’re under 18, and it’s against the law for anyone to set off fireworks be-tween 11pm and 7am, except on certain occasions.

Adult fireworks are category 2 and 3 fireworks - they do not include things like party poppers.

Category 4 fireworks can only be used by professionals.

The law says you must not set off or throw fireworks (including sparklers) in the street or other public places.

You must not set off fireworks between 11pm and 7am, except for: Bonfire Night, when the cut off is midnight,

New Year’s Eve, Diwali and Chinese New Year, when the cut off is 1am

Check with your council to find out about any local rules for setting off fireworks.

Get information about firework safety from The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents and the Health and Safety Executive.

Buying fireworks

You can only buy fireworks (including sparklers) from registered sellers for private use on these dates:

• 15 October to 10 November

• 26 to 31 December

• 3 days before Diwali and Chinese New Year

At other times you can only buy fireworks from licensed shops.

You can be fined up to £5,000 and imprisoned for up to 6 months for selling or using fireworks illegally.

You could also get an on-the-spot fine of £90.

PLEASE REMEMBER - There are a lot of DOGS, CATS, HORSES and other PETS in Kingsdon.

Please notify Claire Dickie at World Horse Welfare, Glenda Spooner Farm, Brincil Hill, Kingsdon, - Email: [email protected] Tel: 01935 841442 and also your neighbours who have pets, the details, if you intend to hold a Fireworks Event in Kingsdon.

SCAM ‘Parcel Delivery Service’ HOAX

It is that time of the year again, when on the lead up to Christmas, a message is circulated concerning ‘Parcel Delivery Service or just PDS’.

This refers to a Scam that originated in 2006 and was subsequently shut down. Unfortunately, however, people are still circulat-ing warnings of this Scam, either trying to scare people, or believing they are doing people a favour by warnings them of it.

If you receive a letter, card, email or telephone message that contains ‘Parcel Delivery Service or just PDS’, even if it purported to come from a Police Force, Post Office or any other official organisation the most sensible thing to do is D|ELETE IT. Do not pass it on, all you will be doing is perpetuating this HOAX

The success of the Fleet Air Arm attack on the Italian Battle fleet at Taranto in 1940 changed the course of history.

The innovative and brave attack by 20 Swordfish aircraft launched from HMS Illustrious not only unleashed the

devastating effect of carrier air power and changed the balance of power in the Mediterranean – it also gave Win-

ston Churchill a decisive and triumphant victory to raise the country’s morale at a time it really needed it!

This year on the 80th anniversary, we holding a 'virtual' Taranto night on

Wednesday 11 November 2020

Like the Pandemic Proms, Navy Wings will be hosting a special Taranto 80 ‘Dinners for Six’ celebration on

Wednesday 11 November 2020 with guests invited to join the traditional toast to the

‘Men of Taranto’ by Zoom at 19.00.

Taranto 80 ‘Dinners for Six’ can be held anywhere – in your own home, garden, mess, ship, or village hall.

Join the ‘virtual top table’ with Admiral Sir George Zambellas GCB DSC (President Navy Wings), Rear Admiral

Tom Cunningham CBE (Chairman Navy Wings), Rear Admiral Simon Charlier CBE (Chairman FAA Officers

Association), Rear Admiral Martin Connell (Rear Admiral Fleet Air Arm) and Commodore Jock Alexander OBE

(Chairman Fly Navy Federation) for a short celebration of Taranto 80 between 19.00-19.30. Admirals Zambellas

and Connell will make short speeches followed by a Toast to ‘the Men of Taranto’, whereupon the Zoom

conference will cease and you can continue unfettered with your own celebrations.

We would like each table to submit a photo or video to show how they have celebrated this not to be forgotten Ta-

ranto Night. The host of the table who submits the most imaginative photo or video that captures the spirit of the

evening will receive a special prize from Navy Wings.

Help us ensure that this year’s important 80th anniversary and the indomitable spirit of the men of Taranto is

celebrated in style!

Table of Six: £60 donation to Navy Wings

Dress: The Navy Wings table will be in Mess Kit or Black Tie with miniatures and Fleet Air Arm cummerbund.

You should dress appropriately for your situation.

Article published at the request of Tom Bradbeer

It has been brought to the attention of some of the residents of Top Street, that Estate Agents Greenslade Taylor Hunt have been tasked by the Bath & Wells Diocese to explore the possi-bility of creating a new, large, vehicular access from Top Street into the Glebe field and in the process reducing the height of the hedge to just 0.9m for virtually the entirety of its length, some 110 metres.

The Diocese say it is to give them their own access separate to that from The Kingsdon Estate (who own part of the Glebe Field) and say it is for ‘agricultural purposes’.

If that is the case, then this portion of the Glebe field already has its own gateway in place, although it has become overgrown in recent years. The gate (towards North Town junction) is still in place in the hedgerow and the Limes planted by the Parish Council in the 1980s have been spaced to match this existing gateway.

There is, therefore, no need for a new largescale third access into the Glebe field if 'agricultural use' is what the purpose of the exercise is?

If you are concerned about the visual impact that this will have on Top Street, Loss of Hedge-row, Wildlife impact, Glebe field being an asset of community value, little need for what will be a third larger access into the field, it being at odds with the village design statement (or other points you may wish to raise) write to- Mr Robert Baker, GTH, 75-77 High Street, Burnham on Sea, Somerset, TA8 1PE. A 4 year old boy was asked to give thanks before a big Christmas dinner. The family members bowed their heads in expectation. He began his prayer, thanking God for all his friends, naming them one by one. Then he thanked God for Mommy, Daddy, brother, sister, Grandma, Grandpa, and all his aunts and uncles. Then he began to thank God for the food. He gave thanks for the turkey, the dressing, the fruit salad, the cranberry sauce, the pies, the cakes, even the Cool Whip. Then he paused, and everyone waited--and waited. After a long silence, the young fellow looked up at his mother and asked, "If I thank God for the sprouts, won't he know that I'm lying?" I went to my doctor for the 15th time this year today. He said ‘sir, I think you may have hypochondria.’ I replied ‘oh no, not on top of everything else!’ I told my wife our marriage was at an end when she flooded the bathroom…...I said 'It's over, Flo… Prince Charles arrives in Iran on an official visit. He says to the President, 'Where's the Shah?' 'What do you mean?' says the President. 'There is no Shah. We got rid of the Shah years ago.' 'Okay,' says Prince Charles. 'In that case I'll have a bath.' I was looking for a sofa to buy, and the salesman pointed to one and said, “This one can seat three people without any problems.” I said, “Where the heck am I going to find three people without any problems?” Swan Vesta FC are looking for a striker for their next match. Anybody interested in a free ride in a helicopter for 4 peo-ple?! I'm still looking for 2 more people to join us. We leave early Saturday (October 31st) morning from Yeovil Leonardo’s and will fly to Sandbanks where we will have breakfast and then on a yacht for lunch. Then, we’ll do a flight along the coast and flying home to Yeovil in time for dinner. If interested please pm me.. Preferably someone with a helicopter and yacht, otherwise we can't go… After careful study of the Louvre building plans and months of meticulous planning, he was able to evade all the security and stole several priceless paintings. He then loaded the paintings into his van parked nearby. Just as he was about to leave, he heard the alarm go off in the building. Without a moment's hesitation, he kicked the van into high gear and sped away. However, his van ran out of gas less than 5 minutes later, and he was caught and arrested by the police. "I don't understand", Said the police officer. "How could you plan all that so carefully, yet forget to fill up your gas tank?" To which the thief replied:

"But monsieur! Zat is exactly why I stole ze paintings! I had no Monet, to buy Degas, to make ze Van Gogh!" Yesterday my husband thought he saw a cockroach in the kitchen. He sprayed everything down and cleaned thor-oughly. Today I’m putting the cockroach in the bathroom.

Five blokes in an Audi Quattro arrived at the ferry check-point in Harwich, Essex. Tracey, in her brand new uniform, stops them and tells them: "I can't let you on the ferry. It is illegal to have 5 people in a Quattro. Quattro means four. One of you will have to get out and stay behind." "Quattro is just the name of the car," the driver replies disbe-lievingly. "Look at the papers: this car is designed to carry five persons." "You cannot pull that one on me. This is Tracey you're talk-ing to here," she replies with a smile. "Quattro means four. You have five people in your car and you are therefore breaking the law. So I can't let you onto the ferry. It's more than my job's worth to let you all on." The driver is now very cross and replies angrily, "I've had enough of you. Call your supervisor over. I want to speak to someone with more intelligence!" "Sorry," responds Tracey, "but Sharon is busy with those two blokes in the Fiat Uno." It was very crowded at the supermarket, and the elderly cus-tomer in front of me had a large order. As the helpful check-out girl lifted the final bag for her, its bottom gave way, sending the contents crashing to the floor. "They just don't make these bags like they used to” she quipped to the customer. "That was supposed to happen in your driveway" A European woman told me how tall she was in cm. I asked what that was in Imperial units She said she can't do that "foreign height". I told her, "No, that's for temperature. Tall is feet and inches!"

Disposing of your Christmas Trees after 12th night

Hello everyone

I am emailing you as you took part in our Christmas Tree Recycling service last year; unfortunately we will be unable to offer the service this year as our workload won’t allow for the loss of the staff or wood chippers follow-ing the loss of production during the Covid-19 lockdown period. Alternatively, we have liaised with Somerset Waste Partnership (SWP) to provide the following advice: Where possible, SWP and SSDC would like to encourage people to consider replanting trees, home composting or adding them to a corner of the garden as a wild habitat. Where that’s not possible, anyone subscribing to the SWP Garden Waste Service can leave their tree out next to their garden waste bin for collection. The usual re-strictions apply – branches should be less than 15cm or less in width. Anyone not subscribing to the service can take trees to any of the county’s 16 recycling sites https://www.somersetwaste.gov.uk/recycling/centres/ for the garden waste skips. Composted trees – part of the 50% of your recycling that stays in Somerset and 90% that stays in the UK – become Revive soil conditioner sold at recycling sites. Other collection points may be available at the time, and together, SSDC and SWP will endeavour to publicise these where possible. We apologise for any disappointment this may cause and hope we will be able to have the service back up and running next year, and thank you for your understanding. If you have any queries of concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. Kind regards Ceri Owen, Case Officer - Horticulture Environmental Services
