Arline Wetzel Cadwell named Alumna-of-the-Year

A woman who has made her mark in college adminis­trative work and inner-city church activity received Cov­enant College's Alumna-of-the-Year award at Homecom­ing Weekend October 4.

Arline Wetzel Cadwell, a 1967 graduate of Covenant, is the sixth winner of the award. She is the college's director of admissions counseling, and has served in several other positions during her 13-year stay at Covenant.

Rudolph Schmidt, Cove­nant's dean of admissions and records, made the award. In his presentation, he noted, "What­ever her duties, by her unstint­ing application to her task, she made the area of the college where she was working a cen­ter of life and activity for the students and the entire college community."

Mrs. Cadwell earned a bachelor's of science degree in nursing in 1967, and im­mediately began work in the college's office of student development. She served there under four different deans, and in 1976 was promoted to director of admissions counseling. This year she helped the college surpass its enrollment goal of 515 students .

She has been an important part in the growth and development of New City Fellowship, an inner-city Re­formed Presbyterian church in downtown Chattanooga. The church, which began as a Sunday school in 1968, now has attendance of over 100, and she has taught Sunday school there since it began.

Mrs. Cadwell earned praise in the commendation read at the award ceremony: "She is a woman of meek and quiet spirit, but, as one of her friends has said, 'She has steel in her bones.' Often have I heard her speak up for the cause of righteousness - never have I heard her demand rights of her own."

Mrs. Cadwell married David Cadwell in 1978.

Arthur Klem appointed vice-president for development

Dr. Arthur Klem of Deerfield, Illinois has accepted an appointment to become vice president for development at Covenant College, replacing Mr. E. Allen Duble, who is now serving at Covenant Theological Seminary in St. Loms, Mo.

"I am enthusiastic about working at the college," said Dr. Klem. "It is my impression that Covenant has vision and a strong sense of purpose and is ready for the challenges of the days ahead.

"God has surely blessed Covenant College. As a Chns­tian college rooted in the Word of God, Covenant has a vigor­ous faculty - well-prepared academically."

Dr. Klem is currently di­rector of development and di­

rector of information services at Oakton Community Col­lege in Morton Grove, ill., where he has served since 1973. He has had prior experience at Trinity College in Deer­field and Wheaton Coilege.

He holds the Ph.D. from Northwestern University, the M.A. and B.A. from Wheaton College, and the B.D. from Gordon Divinity Sd1ool.

Dr. Klem is married and has two children.

Challenge grant for new year extended to college

The college may claim $250,000 on June 30, 1981 if it is able to meet its gifts and grants goal of $520,000 by that time.

The challenge grant is equal to one offered to Cove­nant last year, which the college was able to claim on the deadline date of June 30, 1980. The $520,000 gifts and grants is $10,000 more than last year's goal of $510,000.

Alumni to give special academic scholarship; choose new president

Covenant College's Alumni Association will grant a $1400 academic scholarship to the son or daughter of a Covenant alumnus each year, the association decided at its 1980 meeting on October 4.

It's a continuation of a project which the alumni began two years ago, but the stipulation is new that the appli­cant be the child of a graduate. Previously, the association underwrote a general academic scholarship.

The grant will be handled through the college's finan­cial aid office, and applications will be tested on the basis of the student's A.CT., S.A.T. and high school grades. The first scholarship will be awarded in the fall of 1981 to an entering freshman.

At the same alumni business meeting, Elisabeth Strom McRae ('76) was made president-elect for the up­coming 1981-83 term.
