Our new SHIIP director has a “Servant’s
heart,” with over 30 years of volunteer
recruitment and non profit service. Beth was
hired as the Arkansas Director of SHIIP in May,
2016, but has been employed with the State of
Arkansas for 8 years. In a year’s time, she has
established a support network for our SHIIP
partners.
Beth has increased Statewide outreach to
educate and inform Arkansas Medicare
beneficiaries on SHIIP’s mission. She lives by a
moto that her mother used to say to her, “Take
the focus off yourself and put it on to
others.” Beth has been married for over 32
years to her husband Charley. They reside in
Lonoke county with a menagerie of animals.

Meet Our SHIIP Volunteers
I have assisted two senior relatives who had great
difficulty maneuvering through the senior
healthcare insurance system. After I attended a seminar
presented by the SHIIP staff, I realized as a SHIIP volunteer, I
would have the opportunity to learn more about Medicare
myself, and have a venue to help my relatives and other
seniors in the immediate area and throughout the state to
navigate the confusion of the healthcare plans.
“
“ I have essentially lived my entire life in this
wonderful State of Arkansas. Now retired I wanted
to give something back to our state and its citizens.
By volunteering a small amount of my time each
week to work with SHIIP, I am participating in a meaningful
way in SHIIP’s mission of helping our fellow
Arkansans understand and navigate the
complexities of the Medicare Health Insurance
Program. I think that is an important mission – I
want to help.

I started my role as a SHIIP volunteer nine years ago after my wife and I retired. At the time, our daughter was the SHIIP director. SHIIP was looking
to recruit and expand the role of volunteers. I wanted to contribute something to my community, so I signed up. I continued my work as a SHIIP volunteer after our daughter left SHIIP. I believe the Medicare Minutes material is useful and I enjoy the interaction with people at the two Senior Centers I serve, Wilson Senior Center in Perryville , T. C. and Vaughn Senior Center in Morrilton.
Sharing Medicare Minutes information is rewarding and it provides valuable information to seniors. As I’ve become acquainted with some of the regulars at the Centers, I enjoy one-on-one interaction before and after the Medicare Minutes presentation. Because of all the information I’ve learned as a SHIIP volunteer over the years, I am often able to answer questions asked by seniors at the centers.

Michelle Byler, with Northwest Arkansas Area Agency on Aging, was
selected as Outstanding Support Group Facilitator Champion of the Year by
Alzheimer’s Arkansas, at its Fifth Annual Champions Gala on March 23,
2017. Michelle serves seniors in need as a Family Caregiver Specialist for
the Northwest AAA in Harrison, and leads a monthly Caregiver Support

extend our congratulations to the well-deserving Michelle!
Each year Alzheimer’s Arkansas honors three outstanding individuals as
Champions for their tireless dedication and support to families affected by
Alzheimer’s disease. This year’s event, held at the Marriott Hotel in Little Rock, raised about
$213,000 which will benefit the organization's programs and services, and includes
educational workshops, financial assistance and 24/7 help for caregivers all across Arkansas.
