2012 Arkansas All-State Clinicians JAMES EDWARDS – CHAMBER ORCHESTRA James Edwards has been the orchestra director at Westlake High School in the Eanes Independent School District (ISD) in Austin, Texas since the 1998-1999 school year. Prior to Westlake High School, he was the Orchestra Director at A.S. Johnston High School in Austin ISD for five years and was the Orchestra and Band Director at Amarillo High School seven years. Mr. Edwards was a founding co-conductor of the Austin Youth Sinfonietta Orchestra from 1994-1996 and is currently co-conductor of the Austin Youth Symphony Orchestra. In addition, he has been a guest conductor for the Austin Civic Orchestra and has taught for the music departments of Texas State University in San Marcos and Amarillo College. Mr. Edwards has served as Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) State Orchestra Chair and Vice-President and TMEA Region Chairman in both Amarillo and Austin. He has held the offices of Texas Music Adjudicators Association Orchestra Vice-President and President. In 1991, Mr. Edwards was awarded the Texas Excellence Award for Outstanding High School Teachers. In 2005, he was included in "Who’s Who Among American High School Teachers" and was named the first "Distinguished Music Educator" by Texas Tech University. Mr. Edwards holds the Bachelor of Music, the Bachelor of Music Education, and the Master of Music degrees from Texas Tech University and has pursued additional musical studies at Arizona State University. The Westlake High School Orchestra has consistently been in the finals of Texas Honor Orchestra competition. In 2003, the Westlake High School Orchestra was selected as the TMEA Honor Full Orchestra. In 2008, the Westlake Symphony Orchestra performed at the International Midwest Clinic in Chicago, Illinois. Recently, the Westlake Orchestra was recognized as having given an Outstanding Student Performance in the Live from Lincoln Center Outreach Program. C. E. ASKEW – SECOND JAZZ BAND

C.E. Askew was born in Brinkley, Arkansas and graduated from Stuttgart High School. Starting junior high band under the direction of Steven Ruff, he was later taught by Jon Barbarotto and the last several years of high school were under the direction of Robert “Tinky” Gibson and Bill Hickman. After a brief enlistment in the USAF, he attended Henderson State University receiving a Bachelor of Music in Education. In 1980 C.E. joined the Air Force Band career field and in August of 1983 won a national drum-set audition with The United States Air Force Band, The Airmen of Note, the Premier Jazz Ensemble of the USAF and served in that capacity for over 22 years. The last six years he also served as the Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge of the Note and retired in October 2004. During his 25 year enlistment, he shared the stage with many luminaries of the jazz idiom to include Michal Brecker, Tommy Newsom, Quincy Jones, Sammy Nestico, Bob Hope, Bill Watrous, Doc Severinson, Kenny Werner, Chaka Khan, and Lou Rawls. During his tenure with the Note, he performed in all 48 contiguous states of the lower United States during 46 national tours, South America, Western Europe, Japan, and Southwest Asia in support of international troops during Christmas 2001. The Note toured extensively throughout the United States performing at major jazz festivals including the Kool Jazz Festival, Mobile Jazz Festival, Notre Dame Jazz Festival, and the Hot Springs Jazz Festival, to name a few. After retirement, C.E and family moved to New Zealand in 2007 and was active in jazz education,

performance, and private instruction. In August 2011, after moving back to Arkansas, he accepted a position at the University of Arkansas at Monticello and is presently the Professor of Percussion. DAVID HAGEDORN – FIRST JAZZ BAND Dave Hagedorn is an Assistant Professor of Music at St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN, where he teaches percussion, jazz studies, and world music. He received a DMA in Percussion Performance from the Eastman School of Music, his principal teacher was John Beck. He also holds a MM in Percussion Performance from the New England Conservatory where he studied with Vic Firth, of the Boston Symphony, and a BS in Music Education from the University of Minnesota, where he studied with Marv Dahlgren and Paula Culp, of the Minnesota Orchestra. He attended the Banff Jazz Workshop in 1981 and 1990, studying with vibist Karl Berger, drummers Ed Blackwell, Abraham Adzenyah, and Marvin "Smitty" Smith. He recorded two albums with the George Russell Living Time Orchestra on Blue Note Recordings: the "African Game", nominated for a "best big band" Grammy in 1986 , and "So What". Tours with George Russell included concerts at Kool Jazz Festivals in Saratoga Springs, New York and San Diego, California and club appearances at Sweet Basil in New York City and at the African American Cultural Center in Philadelphia. He played vibes and marimba on Twin Cities jazz singer Debbie Duncan's album, "It Must be Christmas" on Igmod Recordings. In 1984, he received an honorable mention award from Down Beat magazine for a performance with alto saxophonist Nelson Rangell. Hagedorn has performed in academic settings with: David Berkman, Anthony Braxton, Armen Donelian, Gil Evans, Urbie Green, Haopy Apple, Thad Jones, Vince Mendoza, Tiger Okoshi, Julian Priester, Rufus Reid, Clark Terry, Steve Turre, and Kenny Wheeler. He has also performed with Anthony Cox, Bobby Shew, and Roy Hargrove. He has appeared on the Prairie Home Companion and Good Evening shows on Minnesota Public Radio, and also at the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire Jazzfest. Hagedorn regularly performs in the Twin Cities with groups such as Source Code with Eric Gravatt (former drummer with Weather Report), Apex, the Phil Hey Quartet, Low Blows, Pete Whitman, and SCHAG, a percussion duo with drum set player Dave Schmalenberger. Dave plays a Yamaha 3710 vibraphone. In electric situations he plays a Xylosynth made by Wernick Industries. He is a Yamaha performing artist. DR. JONATHAN REED – MALE CHORUS

Jonathan Reed is Professor of Music and Associate Director of Choral Programs at Michigan State University School of Music where he conducts the State Singers, the Men’s Glee Club and teaches courses in conducting at both the undergraduate and graduate level. In 1999, the Associated Students of Michigan State University (ASMSU) presented him with the Outstanding Faculty Award. He is a contributing author to GIA’s The School Choral Program, and is series advisor for Boosey and Hawkes choral series entitled In Low Voice. Dr. Reed enjoys an active career as a clinician/conductor, conducting festivals and all-state choruses throughout the United States. Recently he has conducted all state choruses in Indiana, Colorado, New Mexico, Virginia, Texas, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Tennessee, Maryland, Louisiana, Wisconsin, Missouri, as well as honor choirs for the Northwest, Western, and Southern Divisions of The American Choral Directors Association. His choirs have performed at divisional and national conferences of ACDA. He has presented interest sessions at two national conferences of ACDA (1999, 2005) and at numerous state ACDA conferences. He has also served ACDA as a state newsletter editor, a state president, and divisional and national chair of the Repertoire and Standards committee on Male Chorus.

DR. LYNNE GACKLE – FEMALE CHORUS

Lynne Gackle currently is Associate Professor of Ensembles and Associate Director of Choral Activities at Baylor University (Waco, TX) where she conducts the Baylor Bella Voce (Women’s Ensemble) and the Baylor Concert Choir. Lynne is an active clinician, conductor and adjudicator for choral clinics, honor choirs, workshops and festivals throughout the United States and abroad. Gackle has conducted All-State choirs in 28 states, several divisional ACDA honor choirs and two ACDA national honor choirs. Her choirs performed at American Choral Directors Association state, division, and national conferences and the Music Educators National Conference Biennial Convention. Internationally, she conducted the Australian National Choral Association’s High School Women’s Choir in Brisbane, the Alberta Choral Federation’s High School Honour Choir in Calgary, the DoDDS-Europe Honors Music Festival Mixed Choir, (Wiesbaden, Germany), the Haydn Youth Festival in Vienna, and the Association for Music in International Schools (AMIS) International Women’s Honor Choir in Beijing, China. Lynne has served as president of ACDA-Florida and the ACDA’s Southern Division. The Florida ACDA chapter awarded her the Wayne Hugoboom Distinguished Service Award for dedicated service, leadership, and excellence. Lynne has also served in various R & S roles within ACDA, including National R & S chair for Children’s Choirs as well as Southern Division chair for Women’s Choirs. Currently, she serves on the editorial board for the Choral Journal. She is the editor of Choral Artistry for the Singer with Walton Music and the Lynne Gackle Choral Series for Colla Voce Music, Inc. She has written several articles for the Choral Journal and contributed to the MENC publication, Music at the Middle Level: Building Strong Programs. Lynne is the author of Finding Ophelia’s Voice, Opening Ophelia’s Heart: Nurturing the Adolescent Female Voice, published by Heritage Music Press.

She is a member of ACDA, MENC, the Texas Music Educators Association, the Texas Choral Directors Association, ISME and NATS. Gackle received her BME from Louisiana State University and her MM and Ph.D. from the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida. DR. ALLEN HIGHTOWER – MIXED CHOIR Allen Hightower is a Professor of Music at Luther College, where he serves as conductor of the renowned Nordic Choir and Artistic Director of Christmas at Luther. As Luther's Director of Choral Activities, he gives leadership to a choral program that includes five choral conductors, eight choirs, and 540 singers. Prior to joining the faculty at Luther, Dr. Hightower served as Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. During his tenure, the SHSU Chorale performed for the 2007 National Convention of the American Choral Directors Association, the 2010 Southwestern Division of ACDA, and the 2003, 2006, and 2010 conventions of the Texas Music Educators Association. Before joining the faculty at Sam Houston, Allen served on the faculty of California State University, Long Beach, conducting the CSULB Chamber Singers. His high school teaching experience includes teaching at Klein High School in Houston, Texas and at Odessa Permian High School. Under Allen’s direction, the Permian High School Kantorei performed for the 1996 Texas Music Educators Association convention. A life-long church musician, Dr. Hightower has served Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian, and Congregational churches in Texas and California. He has served as the Duesenberg Concert Choir Chair for Lutheran Summer Music Academy and Festival in the summers of 2007 and 2011. From 2005-10 Allen was music director of the Houston Masterworks Chorus, Houston’s largest independent chorus. Performances with this chorus and professional orchestra included Orff’s Carmina Burana, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Haydn’s Creation, masses by Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven, as well as the requiem masses of Fauré, Mozart, and Brahms. Allen holds degrees from Sam Houston State University, Baylor University, the Eastman School of Music, and UCLA. He was the first-prize winner in the graduate division of the ACDA Conducting Competition in 1997. From 1997-2000 he served as conducting intern with the Los Angeles Master Chorale. Allen has been mentored by choral conductors Bev Henson, Donald Neuen, Paul Salamunovich, Joe Flummerfelt, and Weston Noble.

During the 2011-2012 academic year, Dr. Hightower will conduct in Iowa, Minnesota, Illinois, Wisconsin, California, Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas, Arkansas, and Texas as well as throughout the British Isles

DR. MICHAEL ALEXANDER – ORCHESTRA Dr. Michael Alexander is the Associate Professor of String Music Education at Baylor University. His duties include supervising string student teachers, instruction in classroom string pedagogy, and conducting the Baylor Campus Orchestra. Alexander is in demand as a clinician/conductor and has conducted 17 Region Orchestras in Texas as well as All-State / Honor Orchestras in New Mexico (twice), Mississippi, North Dakota, Louisiana, and Florida. He has presented clinics in Houston, Dallas, Atlanta, San Antonio, Chicago, Boston, Savannah, Cincinnati, New York, et al. Alexander's musical education includes: Bachelor of Music Education (Southwestern University), Master of Music (Sam Houston State University), and Doctor of Musical Arts (University of Houston). He has studied conducting with Kenneth Sheppard , B. R. Henson, Franz Krager, William LaRue Jones, Robert Culver, and Marvin Rabin. During his 22-year tenure as Director of Orchestras at Stratford High School, the Stratford Symphony was twice named the Texas Honor Orchestra (1994, 1997) by the Texas Music Educators Association and earned sweepstakes ratings at regional festivals the last 17 of those years. Alexander led the orchestra to invited performances in Chicago, New York, Atlanta, New Orleans, Orlando, Innsbruck, Austria and, in 2000, as the resident orchestra for the conducting master classes at the International Workshops in Glasgow, Scotland. Alexander is a past-president of the Texas Orchestra Directors Association and a Past Vice-President of the Texas Music Educators Association. He has served as Chairman of the Committee on School Orchestras and Strings for the ASTA w/ NSOA and has published numerous articles in both The Southwestern Musician and The TODA News. His current publication project has been working with a team of authors to create "Orchestra

Expressions", a comprehensive orchestra curriculum published by Alfred Publishing (see http://www.music-expressions.com/). From 1994-2001 Alexander served as Conductor for the Houston Youth Symphony-Philharmonia Orchestra. Alexander was the first recipient of the Houston Symphony School Bell Award for Excellence in Teaching and, in 1994 and 2006, named Teacher of the Year for Stratford High School. He has received letters of commendation from the City of Houston, the Texas Music Educators Assn., Spring Branch ISD, a Citation of Merit from ASTA/NSOA, and, in 2002, the Elizabeth A.H. DR. MILTON ALLEN – CONCERT BAND Dr. Milton Allen currently serves as Visiting Associate Director of Bands at The Ohio State University. His duties include conducting the OSU Symphonic Band and teaching courses in undergraduate instrumental conducting. He is Director of Bands and Instrumental Division Director at Eastern Illinois University, where he conducts the Wind Symphony, Collegiate Band, University Band, teaches undergraduate conducting, guides the graduate wind conducting program and oversees all aspects of Eastern’s band program. A 17-year veteran of the public school rehearsal room, Dr. Allen’s refreshing and practical approach to both music education and conducting has taken him throughout the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom as a clinician and guest conductor. From British Columbia to Glasgow, Scotland and at conferences including the Midwest Clinic, MENC regional and national conventions and BASBWE International Wind Festivals, Dr. Allen’s humor, passion and experience combine to illuminate the possibilities of both music education and the live art of performance. Active in the commissioning and recording of new wind works for both developing and experienced bands, Dr. Allen has collaborated with many composers, including Michael Sweeney (High Water Mark: The Third Day), Mark Camphouse (Watchman, Tell Us of the Night), James Bonney (Courage and Compassion and TranZendental Danse of Joi), Jonathan Newman (My Hands Are a City) and Steven Bryant (Ecstatic Waters). His first book is slated to be released by Meredith Music Publications/Hal Leonard. Ensembles under Allen's direction have received numerous awards at local, state and national levels including recognition by the United States Congress for Musical Excellence. He is a two-time school Teacher of the Year, a Kansas Teacher of the Year Semi-Finalist, and is listed in various Who's Who publications. Other honors and distinctions include five awards from the Ohio State University School of Music recognizing his teaching and service and selection as a Conducting Fellow for the Eastman Wind Ensemble's 40th Anniversary. In 2008, Dr. Allen became the first civilian in the history of the United States Air Force to tour as a featured conductor (USAF Heritage of America Band) and received an Eastern Illinois University Achievement and Contribution Award. Dr. Allen earned his Bachelor of Music Education degree with honors from the University of North Texas, the Masters degree in conducting from the University of Missouri-Columbia, the Diploma of Fine Arts in Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band from the University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada and the Doctor of Musical Arts from The Ohio State University. Dr. Allen is a Jupiter Instruments Artist Conductor/Clinician. STEVEN DAVIS – SYMPHONIC BAND

At the University of Missouri Kansas City’s Conservatory of Music and Dance, Steven D. Davis is the Director of Bands and Wind Ensembles, Associate Professor of Conducting, chair of the Conservatory faculty, chair of large ensembles, and conductor of the Conservatory Wind Symphony. He coordinates the graduate program in wind ensemble conducting and guides all aspects of the UMKC band program. He is the founding director of one of the largest summer conducting symposiums of its type in the country—the UMKC Wind Band Teaching Symposium. In addition to conducting the Symphony Orchestra of the Youth Symphony of Kansas City, Prof. Davis also conducts newEar, Kansas City’s professional contemporary chamber ensemble. For the five years prior to joining the faculty at UMKC he was the Associate Director of University Bands at the University of Michigan. In 2009–10, Prof. Davis made appearances as a guest conductor in Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, New York, and Texas as well as six cities in Spain; Bangkok, Thailand and Beijing, China. Davis has served as a guest for the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic, MENC National Convention, Interlochen Summer Arts Camp, CBDNA National Convention, the Festival of New American Music, Powell Hall alongside David Robertson of the St. Louis Symphony and numerous state music conferences. Prof. Davis has been praised for his performances by some of today’s most significant living composers such as Michael Colgrass, John Corigliano, Osvaldo Golijov, David Lang, Jennifer Higdon, Steven Stucky, Chen Yi, Michael Daugherty, Verne Reynolds, Leslie Bassett, Samuel Adler, Robert Linn, and Frank Ticheli. Recently Prof. Davis was elected as the President-elect of the Southwest Division of the CBDNA. He has also been awarded honorary lifetime memberships in the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association, Phi Mu Alpha and Tau Beta Sigma fraternities. The University of Michigan

Band Alumni Association named Davis a ‘true son of Michigan.’ Davis has published with Carl Fischer Inc. ANTHONY MAIELLO – WIND SYMPHONY Anthony J. Maiello received both his bachelor's and master's degrees in music from Ithaca College in l965 and l967, respectively. He also studied at the National Conducting Institute in Washington, D.C., under the direction of Mr. Leonard Slatkin, former Musical Director of the National Symphony Orchestra. He has served as a Cover Conductor for the National Symphony Orchestra at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Washington, D.C. Mr. Maiello's many professional credits include clinician, adjudicator and guest conductor of All-State, All-State Sectional, Regional, District, All-County and All-City ensembles, with appearances throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, England, Europe, The Netherlands and The Bahamas. He conducted musical activities for the Gold Medal Ceremonies at the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid, New York, the New York State Music Camp & Institute; has served as New York State Music Association adjudicator; clinician with Yamaha, and clinician for Warner Bros. Publications, President of the International Association of Jazz Educators - New York State Chapter and as Musical Director for Music Festivals International. He is an elected member of The American Bandmasters Association and ASCAP, and holds membership in the National Band Association, College Band Directors National Association, New York State School Music Association, Virginia Music Educators Association, Virginia Jazz Service Organization, The College Music Society and The American Symphony Orchestra League. Mr. Maiello's academic experience includes extensive teaching in the public schools. He served as Professor of Music and Chairman of Performance at the Crane School of Music, Potsdam College of SUNY, Potsdam, New York, where his duties included advanced instrumental conducting, applied clarinet, woodwind and percussion techniques, and conductor of the Crane Wind Ensemble. Under his direction, the ensembles at Crane and George Mason University have commissioned many new works, made numerous recordings and appearances statewide and at regional and national conferences in the United States and Canada. He is the author of CONDUCTING: A HANDS-ON-APPROACH, CONDUCTING NUANCES: LITTLE THINGS MEAN A LOT, and co-author of the 21st CENTURY BAND METHOD. Anthony Maiello travels widely presenting clinics, lectures and workshops, and guest conducting and adjudicating numerous music festivals. He is presently an Associate Director of the School of Music and Professor of Music at George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia. Mr. Maiello has also served as Associate Conductor of The McLean Orchestra, McLean, Virginia, has been appointed an Honorary Conductor of The United States Navy Band, Washington, D.C. and is presently the conductor of the American Symphonic Winds and American Festival Philharmonic Orchestra, Washington, D.C. Professor Maiello is the founder and Conductor/Artistic Director of the American Festival Pops Orchestra, a professional ensemble in the greater Washington, D.C. metropolitan area dedicated to promoting popular American Music.
