Reflection "The reason we speak of our Faith is because we are loved by Jesus. This is the basis of all we do. We share with others what we ourselves have experi-enced. By our own encounter with Christ, we become convinced of his love, and that conviction is what we speak to others about. We are always disciples, always being renewed in our encounter with Christ. It is not some-thing we experience once for all time, but an ongoing, ever-deepening intima-cy with the person of Jesus Christ. He is at the heart of our missionary disciple-ship."

Working on the Margins: Help the CCHD Collection November 17-18 in parishes!

Pope Francis once said, “The best and most practi-cal way to avoid making an idol of money is to share it, share it with others, above all with the

poor…When you share and donate your profits, you are per-forming an act of lofty spirituality.” With these words in mind, we reach out to our fellow Catholic communities to ask for your act of lofty spirituality that will help the Catholic Cam-paign for Human Development. CCHD, the anti-poverty effort of the US Bishops, is dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty by funding community programs that encourage independ-ence. Your generous donations will give those in poverty the support they need to make lasting changes. Together, we can make a difference in families and communities across the Unit-ed States. Please encourage your communities to give gener-ously to this collection! All parishes should have already received their promotion ma-terials and posters. The collection funds both national and lo-cal grants (25% of the collections stays locally) available to non-profit organizations working on community or economic de-velopment projects. Totaling $124,000 in grants, currently CCHD is funding a community led program to protect scarce water rights, jobs for youth doing historic preservation of tra-ditional adobe structures, programs that advocate for immi-grants and refugees, advocacy for early childhood intervention and a coop for local caregivers. CCHD has also collaborated with The Catholic Foundation on local economic development grants. For more information see www.usccb.org/cchd or con-tact our office (see box).

New Pastoral Aid for World Day of the Poor A pastoral aid (also in Spanish) marking the Second Annual World Day of the Poor, is available for this day and includes a homily help, Prayers of the Faithful, a sample bulletin an-nouncement, and more.

5 Ways to Observe The World Day of the Poor 1. Pray for the Poor. There are so many people who need our prayers. If you’re overwhelmed and not sure where to start, try praying with your newsfeed. As you see headlines about what’s happening around the world, pause and pray for the people affected by those stories. 2. Practice the Corporal Works of Mercy. The Corporal Works of Mercy are drawn from Jesus’ life and teachings. They call us to: feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, shelter the home-less, visit the sick and imprisoned, bury the dead and give alms to the poor. Pope Francis added a new work of mercy: to care for God’s creation. The Corporal Works of Mercy offer a clear model and starting point for how to care for our neighbors in need. 3. Make Caring for the Poor Part of Your Routine. Do you buy coffee, chocolate or Christmas gifts? One way to support low-income workers around the world is by buying things you use on a regular basis from organizations that pay a fair wage. If you drink coffee or tea, look for a fair trade label, which means that the farmers who harvest the coffee or tea are paid fairly and work in safe conditions. As you begin your Christmas shop-ping, consider buying gifts from around the world that are pro-duced and traded ethically. 4. Learn about the Causes of Poverty and Work to Change Them. There are many reasons why people around the world are trapped in poverty: lack of jobs, war and climate change that affects what farmers can grow are only a few examples. We can raise our voices together to ask our government to support policies that help address these causes of poverty. 5. Support the Church’s Outreach to the Poor. One way to care for the poor in the US is by supporting the U.S. Bishop’s anti-poverty effort, Catholic Campaign for Human Develop-ment (CCHD). On the weekend before Thanksgiving, the same day as the World Day for the Poor, Diocese around the country hold the annual CCHD collection, and we need you contribute! The collection is the only annual opportunity to raise essential funds to support the work of over 200 anti-poverty organiza-tions around the country. See http://www.usccb.org/about/catholic-campaign-for-human-development/index.cfm for more information.

Project Rachel: Post-Abortion healing in the “Heart of the Church”

For many post-abortive women, physical healing from their abortion is not the main issue. For many, the ailment is about grief, and they are in need of spir-itual and psychological healing. However, many of the ways women might address grief and guilt can result in physical problems such as chemical addictions and other destructive behaviors. Spiritual, psychological and physical illness must be treated with care and compassion. Project Rachel is a ministry of mercy, helping women and men recover from abortion loss. Abortion loss is an integral part of the Church’s Pro-Life minis-tries; Project Rachel is in the “heart of the Church.” For infor-mation on Project Rachel within the Archdiocese of Santa Fe, call the Project Rachel message line, 505-831-8238.

Use our resources to help educate your par-ish or community about the Church’s teaching and tradition.

Quote of the Month from Pope Francis

“The Lord listens to those who, trampled in

their dignity, still find the strength to look

up to him for light and comfort. He listens to those

persecuted in the name of a false justice, oppressed

by policies unworthy of the name, and terrified by

violence, yet know that God is their Savior” (no. 1).
