Most people find going on a snowmobile tour in beautiful surroundings a totally magical experience.

The Magic of Snowmobiling

Every season more than five hundred visitors in Arjeplog try snowmobiling while they are here. What is it that makes riding the motorized sled so popular? We asked snowmobile guides, Joakim Armgren, Johan Sadelius and

Oskar Jernberg to describe the magic and they said that generally people say that the feeling of freedom and the incredible speed is what they enjoy the most. Of course, the beautiful countryside and wilderness add to the enjoyable experience.

Most of their guests have a genuine interest in motors and technology so they understand quite well how it all works. However, they are often surprised when they feel the power of the ‘Skidoos’ as they are called in the US and Canada. continued on page 6

This & That• Once again airport bus driver, Rolle from Flinkfeldts Buss, went out of his way to help some car testers.

On his way back to Arjeplog after dropping off passengers at Arvidsjaur Airport for the early flight the other day he saw that some French car testers had driven off the road into the snow bank by a roundabout in Arvidsjaur.

They were not hurt but in a panic as they needed to get to the airport in time for their flight.

So, he took them in the bus, turned around and drove them to the airport. They got there in time for their flight and then he could drive back to Arjeplog. That’s what we call good service and being extra helpful.

• Last week saw temperatures well below minus 35°C in Arjeplog causing a variety of problems.

Some car testers went for a drive to the arctic circle last Sunday. It was really cold, in some places down to minus 40°C, but it was quite an adventure.

The problem was that they needed to buy petrol but there was a power failure in the west of the municipality and the pumps were not working.

They had to wait for over three hours and when they finally could drive back along the Silver Road to the town of Arjeplog, they saw a car belonging to Vattenfall (the electricity company)stuck in the snow bank.

Local online paper Arjeplognytt.se posted a story of the problems with the cold, the power failure and delays. The repair man hit a reindeer on his way to fix the signalling box and local repairmen Sture Burman and Mikael Wikström had to fetch him.

They worked for fifteen hours in the bitter cold and dark to fix the over-heated transformer before they could restore electric power to all the affected villages.

They concluded that this is part of their work, these kinds of things don’t happen in summer when it is warm.

If you plan to go outside to take some photographs when the temperature drops far below freezing it is good to prepare a little before you go out.

First of all, it is important that you are dressed for the occasion. Good shoes and a good hat are essential parts of your equipment. Several layers of clothing are also needed. When you feel warm and nice you also take better pictures.

A photographer needs thin gloves to be able to handle the camera. Gloves made to work with smart phone screens are excellent for modern cameras. It is easier to touch the screen than to fiddle with small buttons in the cold.

I often wear a pair of mittens over the gloves, and take them off when I am going to take the picture. When I was young, my mother used to attach my mittens with a safety pin on the sleeve of my jacket to prevent me from losing them. This is still a good idea and it works well to just shake off the mitten and leave it hanging while you are busy capturing your images.

Before you leave home it is important to charge your battery and make sure you have enough space on your memory cards. I have heard many stories from people who ran out of 'juice' or memory because there are so many wonderful things they wanted to photograph.

Most people have heard that bat-

teries run of of energy quickly when it is cold. This is NOT true, the battery loses its ability to release the energy, but it does not lose the energy.

That means that your battery might not be empty. You do not need to go home and sulk. The battery just needs to spend some time in a warm place like your pocket to return to life. This is why it is a good idea to have two batteries, one in the pocket and one in the camera.

It is smart to keep the camera inside your jacket whenever possible.

Often problems start when you take the camera into a warm, humid hut or house. The camera will react just like cold eye glasses and will get foggy. It is usually not harmful for the camera, but it will prevent you from using it until it has dried up.

So if you plan to continue shooting after the lunch break leave the camera outside, but take the battery in with you. Modern digital cameras work very well, the one problem is that sometimes the LCD-screen becomes sluggish but this does not affect the images.

To prevent condensation it is a good idea to leave the equipment in a closed camera bag until it has reached room temperature. Another trick is to put the camera in a plastic bag before coming in from the cold.

Last but not least, it is when the weather is extreme that you can cap-ture the best pictures. So get dressed and go shoot some amazing pictures!

Korean Food for Koreans

There are two chefs from Hyundai Green Food in Korea who spend three months during the winter testing season in Arjeplog.

Their job is to cook lunch and dinner every day for Mobis car testers and visitors. They have a large kitchen and restaurant in a beautiful wooden hut near their test tracks and garages.

A lot of the dry ingredients are bought from Korea, especially the things that they cannot get hold of here in Arjeplog.

They order the rest, such as meat and vegetables and other fresh produce, via Coop Konsum. They are very happy that they have such a good working relationship with Coop, especially with Gertrud Åberg who is in charge of helping them.

In spite of relatively small amounts of snow at the beginning of the winter, reindeer are having problems finding food.

The weather has been very strange this winter. A mixture between being too warm in the beginning and then extremely cold has caused layers of ice to be created on the ground. These make it hard for the animals to find food on their own.

Some of the Saami people have had to feed their reindeer with man-made food at considerable costs. Many of the Saami villages have applied for money from the Sametinget (Saami council) to cover the extra costs.

Occupation: I work for the kommun. Half the time as a vocational co-ordinator at Hornavanskolan and half the time with marketing of the secondary high school and as a webmaster. This year I am also going to arrange the winter and autumn markets.

Favourite food: Reindeer steak with potatoes and a good sauce and my own black and red currant preserve.

What’s good in Arjeplog?The people and Nature. Life is simple and good here.

What’s bad in Arjeplog?Arjeplog is very far away from every-where. This is a disadvantage when you want to go travelling. I am also concerned about the future of our kommun as there are too few people living here. The less inhabitants there are, the more various services will be cut down and places like the sports centre could disappear.

What music do you listen to?Rock and I love Bruce Springsteen. I like all kinds of music except Jazz and Blues.

What’s important in life? My family and my friends. It is important to enjoy every day and to see that you do the things you dream of doing.It is never too late to try new things and follow you dreams. I learned to swim and ski only a few years ago.

Hornavanskolan, the secondary high school in Arjeplog, has a clear aim for the motor and component industry. Here pupils from all over Sweden and from Norway learn skills that might eventually lead them into the car testing world. The Bil-system-teknik programme has been replaced by a similar one that is called Fordonstestteknik (vehicle test technics).

For many years, several companies testing in Arjeplog have accepted pupils from Hornavanskolan in a work placement programme. BOSCH, BMW and Daimler have also donated engines, instruments and literature. Last year BMW presented the school with a brand new sports car. Relations are good and both sides benefit.

One of the most popular ‘class rooms’ is the Vehicle Lab, just outside the sports centre. Here the pupils spend a lot of time outside of school hours fixing snowmobiles and cars for themselves, friends and others.

They have a lot of high tech equipment in the lab, one being a test bench,’Super-Flow SF-9901’ with which Hans Bergström, teacher in the department of automotive science and engineering, shows his pupils how to test the power of an engine.

Joakim says that the rental scooters at ‘Experience Arjeplog’ weigh about 200 kilos and have 120 and 150 horsepow-er. They are capable of out performing just about any car in acceleration.

It is that power that offers the rider a feeling of blissful freedom. It feels as if you can go anywhere and do anything while riding a snowmobile.

It might be true that an experienced local can go anywhere and do almost anything on a snowmobile, but for most guests following the guides along trails is more than enough of an adventure.

Snowmobiling can be a dangerous sport if you do not know what you are doing. If, however, you follow the rules and advice of the guides there is little risk involved.

some of the group made it up to the hut on Mount Akkelis. They thought it was a most amazing experience and that the cold made the tour a real adventure that they will remember for a long time.

An adventure is an exciting or unusual experience with an uncertain outcome. This time the extreme cold combined with the beauty of the landscape are what most of these visitors will remember.

As you can see in the photographs, the extreme cold also provided fantas-tic light for pictures, although many had problems with their cameras (see the article on page 2 for some advice on how to handle your cameras in the extreme cold).

‘Experience Arjeplog’ is part of the Silver Resort (Hotel Silverhatten, Silver Lodge and Kraja) and is the largest company offering guided tours on snowmobiles. The office and shop are at the entrance to Kraja.

Other companies that rent out snowmobiles are found in Gautosjö, Jäckvik and Vouggatjålme.

Today it is difficult to rent a snowmobile without a guide although some of the track makers may let their experienced car testers rent a snowmobile.

If you have a chance, try the magical experience of riding a snowmobile in this beautiful, exotic countryside of Lapland.

Every Sunday the whole season there is a special offer for car testers to go on a two-hour trip, which, weather permitting, is usually to the top of Mount Akkelis.

Depending on the group, they can sometimes go further, other times they have to turn back before they reach the mountain.

When asked about difficult guests, the guides laugh and mention motor-bike riders but especially people who are used to jet skis.

They explain that these people often think riding a snowmobile is the same as riding a bike or jet ski, but it is rather the opposite. When you make a turn on a jet ski you need power but when you turn a snowmobile you have to let go of the gas. It is also difficult to skid around on a snowmobile and very dangerous.

Last weekend I had the privilege to join a group of Germans for a three-hour snowmobile tour. It turned out to be minus 30°C and although some people tried to discourage them from going on the tour, the group insisted that they wanted to give it a go.

The guides prepared them with the best gear available and also made plans to get the riders back quickly in case of any problems. The tour went well and
