Sixteen years ago, The Las Sendas Golf Club, a 5-Star golf club situated in the scenic foothills of east Mesa,

made a sparkling debut on the Arizona golf landscape. Late last year, the “new” Las Sendas was offi cially reborn.

New is the operative word at Las Sendas. There are new facilities, new mem-bership opportunities and a savvy, new ownership group that is poised to make Las Sendas one of the Southwest’s fi nest golf facilities.

Las Sendas is unique compared to most of its desert golf brethren. Designed

by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. (his initial solo design in the Valley of the Sun) to coex-ist with the natural splendor of its East Valley location, Las Sendas is, in Jones’ own words, “true” desert golf. Much less dirt and rock were moved in this layout than many other area courses of the same era, creating an experience that the re-nowned designer describes as “a nature walk through the desert, attracting you with beauty and challenging you with shot op-tions.” In fact, the club’s name, Las Sendas, was carefully selected from this observa-tion and in Spanish, translates to “The

Las Sendas G

Pathways.” For history and Western movie afi cionados, the land where Las Sendas is located also has signifi cance. In the 1930s, the parcel was owned by Tom Mix. Mix was Hollywood’s fi rst Western megastar and is noted as having helped defi ne the genre for all cowboy actors who followed. Legend has it that he and good friend John Wayne used to ride horses in these hills.

Las Sendas has been ranked the “10th Most Challenging” and “One of the Top 100 Courses in the Nation” by ZagatSurvey. Even though it can be a stern test of golf, Las Sendas is playable and forgiving if

you choose tees that match your game, not your ego. For low handicappers, it’s a stout 72.5/145 rating and slope from the 6,914-yard tips but there are fi ve more reasonable options for you to select from. Each gives players a different perspective of this East Valley gem.

Las Sendas invites you to experience Jones’ “nature walk” while being treated like a member for a day, or a lifetime, with enticing, available 100 percent refundable memberships. The club has no debt, no mortgage and promises to keep the golf course from being leveraged. This

Better Than Ever!Golf Club

certainly provides promise of longevity in today’s challenging times.

Jones design intention was for you to think your way around Las Sendas, yet he must have known that you’d be distracted by the incredible vistas from their 1,800-foot elevation. That’s the conundrum of Las Sendas. Hidden amid the stunning beauty of the surrounding landscape is a hell of a golf course!

Beautiful? Pictures actually understate the grandeur of the three-dimensional view not only up/down and sideways, but out, to Camelback Mountain to the west and the Superstition Mountains to the east, and the entire valley fl oor below.

Much of your pathway at Las Sendas is natural as you drive through the desert, weaving between cacti that are, indeed, in play. Many of the rolling fairways are elevated above the desert fl oor, leaving you options to play low into the large, steeply-sloped greens, or fl y the ball in on

your approaches. Challenging? Survive the daunting two opening holes (the longest par 4 and par 5 on the front side and handicapped as the two toughest on the nine), and conquer the mountainous stretch at 4, 5 and 6, you might be in for a career round. The spectacular 4th is one of the few holes on the course where you’re probably better off laying up off the tee, short of a desert wash with a longer iron approach straight into the mountain that’ll be looking over your shoulder for eight of the next ten holes. Trust us, and the GPS-equipped carts, the course does get a little easier from here on in. Another design feature at Las Sendas you might not rec-ognize until you’ve fi nished is that the fi ve par 3s likely will offer the opportunity to hit fi ve different clubs off the tee. The fi fth and 11th holes play right into the moun-tain. The 7th, the shortest par 3 at just 120 yards from the silver tees, has a treacherous green with at least fi ve foot of elevation

10 arizona.golfersguide.com 2011 ISSUE 1

008-011 Desert Canyon.indd 3008-011 Desert Canyon.indd 3 12/16/10 7:50:15 PM12/16/10 7:50:15 PM

changes between the two tiers. Take an extra club at the uphill par-3 11th so you won’t be disappoint-ed by its false front apron, and don’t miss the green at either of the remain-ing par 3s. The putting surfaces at 14 and 16 are large, but very well-bunkered. Even if you’re not playing from the tips, we recommend the sight from the back tees at the 13th when you leave the mountain.

The views of the Superstition and Usery Mountains off the elevated tee box are breathtaking. The rest of the par 4 is downright fun, concluding with an ap-proach across a desert wash to the green. If you have any breath left, it will likely be taken away by the vistas behind the double dogleg par-5 18th hole. If the views to the White Tank Mountains some 70 miles to the west don’t draw your eye away from the task at hand (the lakes short-right and long-left off the tee) the enticement to aim your second shot right at Camelback Mountain and carry that second lake to reach the green in two will be tempting.

Clearly, the course is the star at Las Sendas. But the new amenities make the fi rst trip worthwhile and future visits more likely. The list of improvements, costing upwards of $4 million dollars, is expansive and includes: a renovated and expanded clubhouse featuring three restaurants, an elegant pro shop complete with private locker rooms for the growing membership, an air conditioned comfort station and The Oasis Snack Bar located between the 3rd hole and the 14th tee, a halfway house and additional public restrooms located near 10, a club storage facilities, shoe shine room, a brand new cart fl eet and more.

The aforementioned restaurants deserve a little more ink. The Rusty Putter Grille, a comfortable sports lounge, offers a wide array of menu items from breakfast to dinner. Open daily for lunch, the Viewpoint Patio features live entertainment Wednes-day through Saturday evenings and boasts spectacular views of the valley. The “ace” of the Las Sendas dining lineup is Bogey’s Steak & Seafood. For the crowning touch, complimentary limousine service is offered with your reservation!

Bogey’s is a 5-Star Prime Steakhouse and is themed after the late cultural icon Humphrey Bogart. Bogey’s serves exquisite cuts of Prime USGA beef as well as fresh seafood selections. An impressive wine list and resort-style service add to your Bogey’s experience. For the crowing touch, Bogey’s offers complimentary limousine service with your reservation!

As Robert Trent Jones, Jr. says, “It is a Wild West Course, and you’d better bring your six-gun, because you’re going to have to shoot it here.” Happy birdie hunting.

Las Sendas Golf Club is conveniently located in east Mesa with easy access from the 202 freeway (Power Road exit). See the Golfer’s Guide map on page 59.

One of the most common swing faults for the majority of golfers is coming over the top which is going to cause the dreaded slice.

A slice produces a ball fl ight that robs the golfer of valuable distance as well as the ability to control the direction of the shot – especially in windy condi-tions. A great drill I use with many of my students is the Rear Foot Back Drill. When this drill is done properly, it can cure a number of swing faults, espe-cially ‘coming over the top’ on the downswing. With a 6-iron, set up with your normal stance and ball position. I recommend you tee the ball up slightly to reduce the tendency to try and hit down on the ball too much. Now, drop your rear foot back so that your toes clear the heel of your front foot. Take a ¾ swing while keeping your feet attached solidly to the ground. Do not lift up the heel of either foot during this shot. Swing down, sweeping through the ball with a controlled tempo at about 50 percent of your normal swing speed. The result will produce a ball fl ight that does not veer wildly to the right for right-handers, or left for left-handers. You will immediately notice a few things with your swing when performing this drill. First, it becomes very diffi cult to take too big of a backswing. At the top of your backswing, you will feel like you are around ¾ of your normal backswing. Second, your downswing will be on an inside to out path; the path that helps to deliver a draw (not a slice) ball fl ight. And fi nally, your impact position will be improved which will provide you with better direc-tion and distance control – two of the most critical elements of producing consistent results and lower scores.

Practice the Rear Foot Back Drill until you are consistently hitting a controlled draw, then be-gin to move your rear foot back into its normal position while remaining focused on repeating an inside to out swing path on your downswing. Whenever you fi nd yourself starting to hit that wild slice again, go back to the practice tee and get back to work with the Rear Foot Back Drill. You can even rehearse this drill as part of your pre-shot routine until the feeling becomes second nature.

Anyone who has attempted to smack a golf ball with any measure of skill knows the diffi culty involved.

In fact, sports enthusiasts categorically view the game as one that can never be mastered. Then why suffer the humilia-tion? Although golf is certainly diffi cult, there’s an easy answer to that question – it’s the sensation. The sensation of hitting one clean and watching it burst into the air will always trump the sensation of catching one off the toe. Plus there’s the sensation of simply being on the golf course. Mark Twain called it “a good walk spoiled.” But what he didn’t say is that without golf, there’s no reason to take a “good walk” in the fi rst place. The spoiled part is simply a matter of unrealistic

performance expectations. So, check the expectations at the door, and take a mo-ment to learn more about one of the best walks in the Valley of the Sun: SunRidge Canyon Golf Club.

First of all, there’s breaking news. SunRidge Canyon was recently purchased by Don and Cindy Misheff, along with a couple of the key members of the man-agement team. They intend to create a golf club that is much more of an exten-sion of their home than an investment. They’re in it for the love of the game; and as part-time residents, a profound affi nity for the area. So next time you tee it up, say hello to the couple sitting on the patio sipping wine. It’s probably them.

“This is a dream-come-true for us,”

said Don Misheff. “Cindy and I visualized this for many years during our springtime visits to the Valley, and we’re now happy to report our long-term commitment to the Fountain Hills community to preserve and even improve the golf experience at SunRidge Canyon.”

Open to public play since 1995, the 6,823-yard, par-71, Keith Foster-designed golf course unfolds around the rugged ridges and shady canyons unique to the eastern slope of the McDowell Mountains in Fountain Hills. Golfers begin their adventure at the upper mouth of one of these canyons, which descends gradually on the way out before doubling back to climb back up the slope on the way in. This subtle, but unmistakable, elevation change lies at the heart of the dramatic golf experience at SunRidge Canyon.

During the round, golfers also discover that SunRidge Canyon wasn’t so much created by a bull-dozer as it was carved out by the relentless pressure of wind and water over eons.

Foster had the good sense to follow Mother Nature’s lead, and in the end, the beauty and challenge of SunRidge Canyon is unlike any other desert golf course in the Valley.

Speaking of challenge, SunRidge Canyon has it in spades, and although the fi rst and third handicapped holes are on the front nine, it’s the back nine which tends to make golfers tap out. Holes 13,

15, 16 and 18 in particular require careful consideration in addition to well-struck shots. In fact, one could make a case that this quartet represents the most diffi cult and scenic set of holes in the Valley. They all play uphill; making length a key com-ponent to success, but here’s a tip: choose the appropriate tees at the beginning of the round to bring these four brutes within striking distance at the end of the round.

After a wonderful experience on the golf course, SunRidge Canyon’s Span-ish hacienda-style clubhouse provides a fi tting place to tally up the scorecard over a cold beverage. With large expanses of glass that open to a spacious patio

perched above a babbling water feature, guests enjoy the sights and sounds of Arizona’s unique indoor/outdoor lifestyle. Stunning views of Four Peaks and Super-stition Mountains frame the background, while stylish Sonoran Desert landscap-ing adorns the foreground. In addition to post-round libations, the clubhouse is a great place for weddings, receptions, awards banquets or any type of special

event. The professional event staff takes pride in not only meeting, but exceedingthe guest’s expectations. It’s a fi re-and-forget operation that allows guests to relaxand enjoy that special day without worry-ing about details.

With a slew of golf courses to choosefrom Valley-wide, there’s a golf experience out there for every type of golfer. SunRidge Canyon just happens to belong to that rarecategory of golf experience which com-bines the fi nest elements into one package. There’s natural beauty, attentive service,

exceptional conditions, stylish facilities and strategic challenges all at a fair price. For most, that’d be enough, but SunRidge Can-yon Golf Club also boasts one of the most important intangible features enjoyed byall golfers: it’s a “good walk.” Maybe evena great walk. Mark Twain himself would be hard pressed to “spoil” this stroll with a sizzling snap hook or a banana ball driftingout-of-bounds.

For golfers looking for a great combina-tion of fun-fi lled Arizona golf at a great value one must take notice of Club West Golf Club. A desert foothills treasure the, Brian Whit-comb/Ken Kavanaugh-designed Club West Golf Club serves up a spectacular desert golf experience, along the southern edge of Phoenix’s South Mountain preserve. New owners (Ahwatukee Golf Properties whose other interests in the area include The Duke Golf Club, Ahwatukee Country Club and Ahwatukee Lakes) purchased Club West in 2010 with a goal to make a Phoenix-area favorite even better. And that they have with refreshed look in the clubhouse and Grill (in-cluding adding a half dozen fl at screens) and enhancing agronomic practices and rolling out a new loyalty program that is amongst the area’s favorites (the Gold Card).

But the course layout is the main head-liner at Club West. This par-71, 7,142 yard layout (from the tips) takes full advantage of

the foothills and promontories of the lower slopes of South Mountain. From the fi rst tee to the 18th green, the elevation varies by as much as 100 feet. Holes meander their way over and around desert foothills, between cacti and through stunning rock formations.

The course was designed to begin as a relaxed warm-up, then gradually demand more accuracy from players as the round progresses, coming to a crescendo at the clubs fi nishing holes. No.15 is a delicate and awe-inspiring par 3 that plays from a hillside to a large green below. While the par-3 17th (routinely voted one of the best par 3’s in the state by the golfers of Arizona) is an exhilarat-ing confi guration of two greens—both tucked into the hillside with steep vertical drops be-low the teeing areas—reached by hitting from a mountainside as much as 217 yards away.

Upon opening in 1996, Club West has garnered a number of local and na-tional awards, including being ranked by the

Van’s Golf Shop Why Shop Anywhere Else?

Arizona is one of the world’s top golfdestinations. Besides 300 plus sunny days,300 plus golf courses (designed by a who’swho of architects) and two Tour events, the state also boasts several excellent retailgolf establishments. The oldest and most customer friendly is Van’s Golf Shops. For 48 years, Van’s Golf Shops have served an untold number of locals, visitors and gift-givers who were in need of top quality golf merchandise. In 1963, the original Van’s was opened by Vincent Bocchini at the now defunct Evergreen Golf Course in Scottsdale. Bocchini, whose nickname was “Van”, would undoubtedly be proud of the company’s growth today. Van’s Golf Shops is an essential part of Worldwide Golf Shops and there are seven Van’s shops conveniently located in neighborhoods throughout Greater Phoenix and Tucson. Worldwide’s other brands include Roger Dunn Golf Shops, Golfers’ Warehouse and The Golf Mart. Collectively, there are over 40 Worldwide shops in Hawaii, California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and here in the Grand Canyon State. “I think there are several reasons why a Van’s Golf Shop is the retail golf store for you,” stated Rick Levy, Vice President of Operations for Van’s. “The quality of our

products, our competitive pricing and the professional level of service that you will receive all add up to a positive buying experience for our customers. We have employees that have been working with us over 20 years and many associates know customers by name, product preferences and sizes.” While prices in the golf industry are somewhat comparable, Van’s is known for their special buys and clever promo-

tions. In fact, be sure to view their weekly ad in the Arizona Republic, Tucson Citizen or various other local newspapers for precise il-lustrations. Since

Van’s is privately-owned, they operate differently and relish the chance to bring unique items and closeouts to their large client base which currently consists of over 80,000 customers on their mailing list and nearly 50,000 in their email database. Another unique aspect of Van’s is the 90-day Satisfaction Guarantee. This means that with anything that you buy -- cloth-ing, clubs, shoes etc., you have a full 90 days in which to try out the product.Van’s is confi dent that you will be pleased with your purchase but if for any reason, you are not entirely satisfi ed, you are able to re-turn the item and will receive 100 percent full store credit. Since 2004, Buckeye’s Raven Golf Club at Verrado has had a unique perspective of the Arizona golf

landscape. Located due west of Phoenix and Scottsdale, two locations long consid-ered as the only viable options for golfers looking for top-notch golf, the Raven at Verrado offers an unhindered unique view looking east into the Valley. It’s a spectacular scene unique to the property, especially from the 18th hole.

Golfers can enjoy the picturesque view knowing that their feet are fi rmly planted at one of the area’s premier courses, regardless of location. The Raven at Verrado has taken the other side to another level, and a number of respected publications agree.

Shortly after it opened, this well-maintained desert layout co-designed 1996 Open Champion Tom Lehman and master architect John Fought, of Indian Wells and The Gallery fame, the Raven was listed

among America’s “Top 10 New Public Courses” by Golfweek and recognized as one of the “Top 10 New Golf Courses You Can Play” by Golf Magazine. In addition to those accolades, The Raven at Verrado was ranked by Sports Illustrated as the No. 1 public golf course in Phoenix.

More recently, the ratings established by GolfWorld’s 2010 Reader’s Choice Awards placed The Raven alongside Arizona’s top public golf facilities, and Golf Magazine lists the course in the Grand Canyon State’s Top 25. Desert Golf Magazine also honored The Raven at Verrado touting the course as the No. 8 public-access facility in Arizona.

Lehman and Fought’s memorable desert composition features two diverse nines. The front meanders east toward the fl attest portion of the property and showcases stunning views of the down-town Phoenix skyline as well as the jag-ged White Tank Mountains. Fluctuating

topography isn’t necessarily non-existent on the front nine, it’s just much less pro-nounced and extremely subtle.

The 397-yard par-4 2nd hole provides a preview of the jagged terrain to come on the back nine. The slight dogleg left is dominated by a deep cavern that bisects the left side of the fairway between the tee shot landing area and the approach to the

green. If you decide to play it safe and hit 3- or 5-wood off the tee, you’ll be forced to carry your approach shot over the ravine to a green with a false front collar.

The 588-yard par-5 5th hole actually plays closer to 530-540 yards. The long and winding hole plays downhill into the valley and provides golfers with the benefi t of a prevailing wind at their backs. For longer hitters, the fairway slopes even more down-hill once you’re inside of the 260-270 yard mark. Bunkers are situated on either side of the green, but the front is relatively open inviting run up shots, reminiscent of those you’d see on Open Championship courses.

By the time you reach the 552-yard par-5 8th hole, the prevailing wind that normally blows west to east and tends to pick up mid-afternoon is in your face. The No. 1 handicap hole on the course, this slight dogleg left is a perfect example of the subtle yet signifi cant elevation changes pres-ent on the front side. You’ll be forced to deal with a large rock outcropping down the left,

and the hidden uphill element will most likely leave you with a lengthy third shot. The green, which is elevated, has been positioned very close to the sandy wash on the right forcing pitch shots to be deadly accurate.

The back nine is much more rug-ged as it ventures into a rocky can-yon that dictates elevation changes of more than 100 feet throughout the

bulk of this nine. The 442-yard par-4 12th hole is the beginning of a three-hole stretch into a small rocky canyon. The signature element of this hole is a deep pot bunker positioned in the fairway; another design feature most likely added by Lehman whose love for Open Championship-style courses is evident throughout this layout. Whatever you do, don’t go into the bunker. A large two-tiered green calls for an accurate ap-proach.

The 326-yard par-4 13th is uphill all the way and requires a supremely accurate touch on approach to a green where a few yards could be the difference between a

birdie putt and watching your ball spin off the green’s severely sloping false front and roll all the way to your feet.

Upon reaching the 492-yard par-4 18th, you’re treated to a complete panoram-ic of the valley.

“There is not another area golf course that will give you the same perspective of the Valley,” said Doug Foss, Raven’s long-time Director of Sales and Marketing “You usually will have some other mountains or obstructions in the way, but not here because you’re looking to the east instead of the west. It’s a really cool persepctive from up here.”

The nines touch uniquely differ-ent areas of the property but have the common element of strategic golf and a traditional style.

“The careful placement of bunkers along with the natural movement in the fairways will challenge all players no matter what their skill level,” added Lehman, who calls Scottsdale home. “However, the real test comes around the greens.

“While the putting surfaces tend to be large and inviting the collars slope away into

deep, closely mown chipping areas similar in style to those of the green complexes of the vaunted Pinehurst No. 2,” Lehman added. “Thus the large greens will play much smaller, requiring tee shots to be posi-tioned into the proper section of the fairway to have the easiest route to the green. This is the essence of strategic design of a golf course; many options as to how to play the hole, but only one is the best.”

The Raven at Verrado is a popular spot during Major League Baseball’s Spring Train-ing and annually hosts an inter-squad golf tournament between the San Diego Padres and Seattle Mariners in mid-February.

Be sure to ask about the Verrado Pack-age, which provides unlimited golf and use of the driving range plus a meal in the Verrado Grille and on-course snacks and drinks from the beverage cart.

The Raven at Verrado has a substantial food and beverage service, giving the club the ability to host corporate parties, holiday events, weddings and golf tournaments.

IBEW 640 & AZ NECAA Winning“Par”tnership

We all know the saying, “time is money,” and in today’s uncertain economy, every penny truly counts. With so many electrical companies struggling to sur-vive, even if it means exploring a different area of expertise or cutting corners, not only can safety and quality suffer, but ultimately the “value” that you as a customer thought you were getting by accepting the lowest bid for your project. The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 640 (Local 640) and Arizona Chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) have thrown aside the old stereotype of labor/management confl ict and partnered together to bring their customers the best value by completing electrical projects, not only on time and on budget, but also to the highest standards of electrical installation and safety; all at a very competitive cost. Since 1925, Local 640 has been providing the highest quality electricians to electrical contractors and customers in the state of Arizona. Local 640 and their NECA partners jointly provide training through the oldest recognized apprenticeship in the state, and are constantly working to advance the best practices and safest working condi-tions in the industry. Together, they are committed to training the electricians of the future; as evidenced

in the 2008 opening of their new, multimillion dollar training center that doubles the capacity of their classes and facilitates training in the advancing green technologies of solar and wind power.

Apprentices are career oriented and learn the electrical trade from the ground up. Electrical theory, code, installation, safety, and a good work ethic are just some of the subjects taught, along with continuing upgrade and safety training to keep all their electricians on the cutting edge of the latest technologies. All of their contractors are licensed, bonded, and insured, and many of them not only have years of experience as a con-tractor, but also as an electrician who has come through Local 640’s comprehensive program. Local 640 and NECA have contrac-tors for any project, from small home maintenance jobs to the largest commercial and industrial projects. Their joint Code of Excellence program partners labor and management to help overcome those little “surprises” that always seem to arise on any construction project. This partnership al-lows their workforce to be more productive and safer than you will fi nd anywhere else. To learn more about the value that the Local 640/NECA labor-management part-nership can provide, or to explore a career opportunity in the electrical industry, visit www.ibew640.com, www.azneca.org or www.neca-ibew640.com

The accolades keep coming. Desert Canyon was just named “Best Places To Play” by Golf Digest! This honor, combined with Market Surveys of America’s award of

“Best Public Golf Course” six years in a row (2005-2010), means that Desert Canyon should be on your golf agenda. Desert Canyon is a challenging yet playable experience. The course winds its way through wonderful desert terrain up and down the natural arroyos and canyons that occur in the Sono-ran Desert. You’ll fi nd tremendous variety in the layout as well: fi ve holes are doglegs to the right; four holes are “left benders.” Two par 3s are blind uphill approach shots while another, the signature 16th hole, is a dramatic downhiller skirted by bunkers. Players won’t want to miss the tribute to the great Scottish courses, so peek into the depths of the front left trap on No. 17. The ninth hole, at 397 yards, provides a stern test for all. Playing uphill and into the prevailing wind, making a four on this hole is always something to brag about. With dramatic panoramic views of spectacular Red Mountain, the Four Peaks and the tallest fountain in the world, Desert Canyon is truly a unique golf experience.

clubs in the Southwest, if not the entire United States. Boasting breathtaking views, gorgeous architecture (including an impressive, expansive 55,000 square-foot clubhouse) and a twosome of Jack Nicklaus designed courses; Superstition

Mountain deftly conveyed an atmosphere of affl uence and success. For a six-fi gure initiation fee and steep monthly dues, you could call the Club “home”.

Mountain was a popular TOUR site for some of the games top men and ladies professionals.

Superstition Mountain Golf & Country Club courses are called The Prospector and Lost Gold. Prospector, created by Jack and Gary Nicklaus, was the fi rst course to open in this 870-acre master planned community.

This classic, 18-hole layout is sur-rounded by extraordinary views of the Superstition Mountains. One of the most striking features of the 7,185-yard Prospector Course is an oasis-like water feature that extends the length of the 18th hole. This magnifi cent fi nishing hole is set in an amphitheater-type setting with the aforesaid Superstition Mountains at your back and the beautiful Spanish Mediter-

ranean clubhouse ahead. Prospector was the host course of the 2002 Countrywide Tradition Tournament as well as the home of the LPGA Safeway International from 2004 to 2008.

Lost Gold, created by Nicklaus and his son Jackie, is a links-styled course that presents a different set of challenges. Open since 1999, Lost Gold completes the Superstition Mountain trail while weaving through magnifi cent desert ter-rain explored centuries ago by conquista-dors in search of the Cities of Cibola.

This 18-hole desert track stretches to a challenging, 7,351-yards from the back tees. The front nine of Lost Gold is laid out with several parallel fairways separated by moderately bunkered cor-ridors. The back nine opens out into the

Make Old Town Tortilla FactoryYour 19th Hole

Arizona has well over 300 golf courses and most-likely, ten times as many restaurants. Like courses, certain dining establishments are more acclaimed. In Greater Phoenix, one of the best is the Old Town Tortilla Factory. Located in the historic and trendy Old Town section of Scotts-dale, the Old Town Tortilla Factory captures the timeless charm and distinct atmosphere that exemplifi es the essence of the Southwest. When you arrive, you enter a beautiful, 1,400 square-foot fl agstone patio where all new furniture is on display. The patio is surrounded by lush, green vegetation and shaded by mature trees. In the “winter” there are plenty of propane heaters to warm, while a powerful misting system cools to perfection during the hotter months. Margaritas Tequilarilla, a separate gazebo bar featuring over 140 premium tequilas and a complete selection of Mexican beers and liquors, is a favored location for the see and be seen crowd. Here and throughout the Factory, premium margaritas are the signature drink. Two facts of interest:1) Tortilla Factory’s award-winning margari-

tas are 16 ounces and comprised of fresh citrus mix and top-shelf tequila

2) The Tortilla Factory is El Tesoro’s largest

independent location account in the UnitedStates. In addition to the wonderful ambience and mixology, the food at the Tortilla Factory is a star in its own right. The cuisine, which owner/operator Chad Flaum describes as “Southwestern with a Mexican twist,” draws from Native American and Sonoran infl u-ences, combining the simplistic nature of their ingredients with modern cooking techniques. To protect the integrity of the recipes, only the freshest ingredients are used. Favorite entrees include red and green enchiladas, pollo margarita, the red chile pork chop, grilled salmon and achiote ribs. A new hit on the menu is the grilled Mahi- Mahi tacos. Complimentary homemade tortillas, with different fl avors nightly, distinguish the Tortilla Factory from so-called competitors. Visit the foyer and watch these authentic treats being made, by hand in an old world tradition. After that, hurry back to your table and enjoy them while they are piping hot. The staff, many of whom have worked at the Tortilla Factory for years, provides consis-tently good service and strive to make sure you have the Ultimate Southwestern Dining Experi-ence. Plan your trip to the “Tort” today.
