A MESSAGE FROM THE RACE DIRECTORS

On behalf of the Ironman Team, welcome to the 2009 Ford Ironman Arizona. The sixth edition of thisgreat event is a testament to the partnership with our hosts, the City of Tempe and the Salt RiverPima-Maricopa Indian Community.

What was a question mark for many athletes in its first year is now established as a unique urban

Ironman experience held in contrast to the stark beauty of the Sonoran Desert.

Athletes will appreciate the calm protection of the one loop swim course in Tempe Town Lake, the surprising challenge of a flat but exposed three-loop bike course ridden in the shadow of RedMountain, and a three-loop run that gently rolls around the lake and through Papago Park.

Spectators will appreciate the unique opportunity to see their athlete over a dozen times throughoutthe day as each goes through the varying degrees of fatigue and emotion that define this 140.6-milejourney to the finish line of the greatest single day test of athletic endurance.

We would like to thank the City of Tempe, the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community and all ofthe sponsors and volunteers who come together to make this event a reality.

Enjoy your time in Tempe and good luck to you for a safe and successful race day.

A MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD REFEREE

We use a slightly modified version of the 2009 USAT Competitive Rules. In summary, we will operate under thethree strikes and youre out principle. Even though DRAFTING is the only violation to incur a time penalty (tobe served in the nearest penalty tent at various spots on the bike course), any type of violation counts towardyour three strikes.

    For example:

    1. DRAFTING violation (four minutes served in a bike course penalty tent)2. HELMET CHINSTRAPviolation3. LITTERING violation a third violation results in disqualification (DQ)

Again, any combination of three rule violations will result in a DQ. To maximize your understanding of the ruleson race day, please take the time to read and understand the following summary of Position Violations andreview the 2009 USAT Competitive Rules.

Always ride on the right side of your lane to avoid an ILLEGAL POSITION or BLOCKING call Keep four bike lengths (7 meters) between your bikes front wheel and the rear wheel of the cyclist in

front of you to avoid a DRAFTING call Always pass on the left of the cyclist in front of you, never on the right to avoid an ILLEGAL PASS call Complete your pass within 20 seconds to avoid a DRAFTING call If passed, drop back four bike lengths before attempting to re-pass to avoid an OVERTAKEN or

    DRAFTING call

Triathlon is an individual event, and it is your responsibility to fully understand the rules and avoid penalties. Inthe case of Position Violations, the referees ruling is final and is not open to protests or appeals. The followingare several other common rules violations:

HELMET CHINSTRAPthe chinstrap of your helmet must be securely fastened whenever you are onyour bike on race day!

RACE NUMBERyou must display your race number during the bike and run portions of the race, andyour bike number must be properly attached to your bike and be visible.

LITTERINGdo not throw away ANYTHING outside of official aid stations! UNAUTHORIZED EQUIPMENTsorry, absolutely no cell phones, MP3 players, Oakley Thumps, iPods or

other audio listening devices! OUTSIDE ASSISTANCEdo NOT accept any assistance from anyone other than a race official, and do

NOT have non-racers ride or run alongside you!

You must go to a penalty tent for any violation to have your number marked, and all violations counttoward your three strikes. There will be no penalty tents on the run. If you are penalized on the run,the official will mark your number on the spot.

Please remember to treat other athletes, volunteers and your referees with courtesy and consideration. Notdoing so is considered UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCTand may result in disqualification.

I sincerely hope you have a perfect race, lots of fun and achieve all your goals.

Prior to mandatory bike check-in on Saturday, be sure your bar-end plugs are in place and you haveno loose spokes, brakes, headsets, stripped cables, etc. Adjust the hubs and position handlebarscorrectly. Ensure that cables and tires are in good condition and sew-up tires are glued properly onto

the rims. Securely fasten all equipment you may carry with you on race day.

To avoid an unexpected flat tire, wait until race morning to inflate your tires to their proper airpressure. There will be a limited number of pumps available in the transition area on race morningso we recommend you bring your own. You must give your pump to a family member or friend beforethe race start, since pumps will not be accepted with your pre-swim bags.

    MEDICAL

    USAT Athlete Excess Medical Policy

The athlete excess medical coverage protects each participant for the day of the event at USATsanctioned races, camps and clinics. When athletes purchase a USAT annual license or one daypermit, a portion of those fees cover the cost to provide them with excess medical insurance. This coverage only extends to their participation in an USA Triathlon sanctioned event and is only

available after the injured party has filed with any primary insurance policies. A deductible doesapply for this excess coverage.

If an athlete is injured while participating in a USA Triathlon sanctioned event the following stepsmust be followed:

Athletes must file with their primary healthcare provider (i.e. United Healthcare, Blue CrossBlue Shield, Aetna, travelers insurance, etc.).

Athlete completes a medical claim form. For serious incidents or for athletes requesting coverage, either the race director or USAT can

provide them with a medical claim form. The medical claim form along with all explanationof benefit documents should be sent directly from the athlete to the insurance company asindicated on the claim form. Please email [email protected] for a copy of the form.

Athletes will pay a deductible. All claimants will pay anywhere from $250 USD (two-hundredand fifty U.S. dollars) to $1,000 USD (one thousand U.S. dollars) out of pocket and possiblymore for uncovered expenses.

Be advised that coverage may not apply to each and every claim. Additionally, coverage onlyextends to participants that have purchased an USA Triathlon annual license or one-day permit andwere injured through participation in an USA Triathlon sanctioned event. Please email questions [email protected]

    Medical Information

All medical expenses incurred are the sole responsibility of the athlete and not IRONMAN. USAT

provides secondary coverage in qualified circumstances. Failure to meet financial responsibility tolocal medical facilities will result in suspension of future participation at IRONMAN events untilaccounts are settled.

Particular dangers include dehydration, hyponatremia, sunburn, exhaustion and injuries sustainedfrom accidents. Please ask for medical help if you have the slightest hint you may need it. You willnot be penalized for receiving a medical evaluation. You will be withdrawn from the race onlyif you require transportation, IV fluids or if medical personnel feel your continued participation couldresult in serious harm or death.

During events of extreme endurance, the bodys pain threshold is raised, and you may be in moretrouble than you realize. The medical personnel will do all they can to keep you in the race andassure a safe finish. Also, please be attentive when taking water and sponges from volunteers when

youre on your bike to avoid the possibility of accident or injury to yourself or another.

Please trim your fingernails and toenails prior to the start of the race to avoid injury to other athletes.Be especially careful to rinse your goggles of any excess defogger solutions to avoid eye irritation.

If you spend three months prior to the event in a climate cooler than Arizona, we suggest youconsider an acclimation period in Arizona before the race. The chance of dehydration and electrolyte

    26

imbalance can be reduced significantly by a proper period of acclimation.

Stay with your familiar and proven routine regarding training, nutrition and equipment, especiallyjust prior to the race. This also applies to pre-race dietary intake and medications. It is recommendedyou avoid an extreme elimination diet. Adequate salt intake during training and during the event is

    especially important.

If you are taking any medications, or have any medical problem that may influence your performanceor your treatment in the event of an injury, advise us of all necessary details well in advance of raceday. At athlete check-in, you are required to notify the medical team, in writing, if thereis any change in your medical status/condition after your application has been processed.Failure to do so will result in suspension of participation in future IRONMAN events.

You are solely responsible for avoiding medications that appear on the list of banned substances asdetermined from WTC Anti-Doping.

Feedback from previous IRONMAN contestants indicates we can never over emphasize the importanceof hydrating prior to and during the event. Ironmans Chief Physician recommends you begin hydrating

heavily several days before the race and drink enough water so your urine is clear, colorless andcopious by race day.

PLEASE NOTE: Full disclosure of medical condition(s), general health and surgical procedureswithin the previous 12 months is required. Medical consultation/clearance may be necessaryfrom an attending physician prior to participating in the event.
