I n less than two weeks, we will be transitioning into a new Liturgical Year. A new cycle of readings will begin. The foundations

of our faith will be recalled. The celebration of the Paschal Mystery will be renewed. Another component of our spiritual lives

will have been brought to conclusion, as a new chapter in the story is ushered in, whose details and length of stay, are yet to be

determined.

This weekend’s readings, though, are invitations to embrace a sort of examination of conscience. As we reflect over the past year of

going to church and journeying in faith, in so many words, the Scriptures ask us, “how have we responded in the past?” “What have we

done with the time, life, gifts, talents, and opportunities that God has given us throughout this past year, this most recent chapter in our

unfolding lives?” It can be a sobering reflection, if we haven’t lived them in the light of eternity.

In Catholic eschatological thought, there is always a certain tension between living for the now, and keeping our eye on the future.

Spiritually speaking, we have a golden opportunity while we are alive in the flesh to respond to God’s providence and grace. We love, we

sing, we smile, we laugh, we cry, and we endeavor. All of these things make us alive in the present. It is incumbent upon us to live the

current moment well, virtuously, responsibly, productively, generously, and grounded in God’s efficacious Word. This concept reminds

me of the old Latin phrase “carpe diem,” i.e., seize the day. Spiritually speaking, we are asked to maximize the present moment, to find

the purpose and completion of our lives and our holy vocations. Why would we not want to live our lives to their full potentials, and find

fulfillment and happiness? I think that the Lord, himself, wants us to use everything at our disposal, all that is given to us, in the best

possible way. Why would he not want the very best from us? Why would he not want us to succeed in the life that his gracious love has

provided for us?

Yet, at the same time, it is also a sign of great wisdom that a person plan for the future, having an eye on the end game, looking to

the finish line, at the object of our questing and searching: the promised reward for a life well lived. Indeed, it is important to be as

innocent as doves, yet as wise as serpents. These final weeks of the Liturgical Year provide us impetus to get focused, and to live wisely,

using our time, talent, and treasure wisely, yet again.

We should always strive to align our lives with God’s will, to enhance our way of living, so as to reflect the hope and promise of

eternity in our souls and through our good use of the precious gift of time. Meditating on the quality of our lives in the present, becoming

reflective practitioners, will help us to make our lives as full of love, delight, and spiritual accomplishment as they can possibly be. We

must engage our intellectual, personal, and spiritual capital in the service of the Gospel and, in so doing, we will find life itself in Christ.

The Parable of the Talents makes clear that there are those who waste a lot of time and resources (talents), squander the richness of

this brief and precious life of ours, and are thereby rendered ineffectual. May our humble prayer this day be, therefore, that we are open

to use our “talents” ad majorem dei gloriam, i.e., for the greater glory of God, living well now in the flesh, as we journey toward

the promised future in the Spirit.

qué de nosotros? ¿Qué estamos haciendo con nuestros

talentos? ¿Cómo nos tratará nuestro Maestro cuando

vuelva? - Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Once again, all the participants in the 52 ministries and services at the

Church of the Little Flower are invited to attend an appreciation evening,

designed with you in mind. Desserts, coffee, refreshments, entertainment,

and a “free” raffle will be enjoyed by all. It will be a wonderful

community event, during which some 28 fellow parishioners will receive

the “coveted” Spirit of the Parish Award, annually bestowed on

parishioners who have captured the essence of parish life and service through their virtue and ministry

here at COTLF. Join us on Monday, November 20th at 7:30pm in Comber Hall. All are welcome.

Parishioners who have not done so before are invited to come to the rectory residence on Thursday, January 4th at 7:30pm to have dessert with Father Davis. You bring the dessert; Father will provide the coffee and refreshments. Having no particular agenda, it’s simply an opportunity, as parishioners, to have a casual chat with the Pastor. There are only twelve seats at the rectory’s dining room table, so space is limited. If you are interested, please call Maria Elena Chialastri, 305-446-9950, ext.306, to get your name on the list.

This week, we were surprised to find out that a number of very active participants in our parish

community have never taken the time to register as official members of the Church of the Little

Flower. Membership, of course, has tremendous benefits! By registering, a person is officially

counted as a valued member of this particular Catholic community of faith; they are positioned

to be recipients of important email blasts and news dissemination materials, newsletters,

Christmas cards, and charitable tax deduction letters that are sent out at the end of each calendar

year. In times of emergency, the priests can have easy access to contact registered parishioners. Being registered and

active also enables a parishioners to qualify for letters of recommendation for Catholic high school admittance,

qualifications for Baptismal and Confirmation sponsorship opportunities, as well as invitations to participate in some of

the treasured ministries and services of the parish. Take the time to go on-line or call the parish office to register or

confirm your registration today. Contact Annette Perez, our Curator of Records, at 305-446-9950, ext.302.

On Monday, December 11th at 7:00pm, our parish will once again have a

HEALING MASS, during which the Sacrament of the Anointing of the

Sick will be bestowed. Several concelebrating priests will be present, as we

pray for those who are terminally or seriously ill, those with a persistent

health malady, those approaching surgery, those recovering from surgery,

and those weakened by the burden of years are especially welcome to be

present. All are welcome to pray for those in need of healing and spiritual

consolation.

As a way to thank God for the new calendar year 2018 and to

ask his blessings upon our journey ahead, we will have a Holy

Hour, including Solemn Benediction on Tuesday, January 2nd at

7:00pm. All are welcome to join us, as we spend time in

adoration and intercession.

On Thanksgiving Day, we will have a special Mass schedule:

an early “bird” Mass at 7:00am Mass without music for all of the

cooks who need to be in the kitchen early that day. We will also have

a 10:30am family Mass with music. All are welcome.

On Tuesday, December 5th (in English) and on Wednesday, December 6th

(in Spanish), Father Flores will be offering an Advent evening of reflection to help

us enter into the spirit of the Advent season of hope and light.

All are welcome to join Father in church at 7:30pm each night respectively.

Join us on Tuesday, November 28th at 7:30pm for the annual

candlelight ceremony of blessing and unveiling of our life-size

Nativity Scene. This year’s new addition features a shepherd and his

little lambs. The 20 minute outdoor prayer service will be supported

by seasonal music provided by our parish adult choir. The ceremony,

well-suited for families and children, will be followed by a social in the

parish hall, where all can enjoy hot chocolate, eggnog, and cookies.

What a wonderful way to usher in Advent! All are welcome!

ONLY TWO (2!) pilgrim spaces remain for the January 2019 World

Youth Day Pilgrimage in Panama. Pilgrims MUST be at least 16

years old by the date of departure. Please contact Jorge Santibáñez at

the parish office for more information about WYD and details on

how to reserve a spot and sign up with our group.

After all Masses today, we’ll be selling the NEW COTLF Car Magnets and the COTLF Tiny

Saints for $5 each. 100% of the proceeds of these sales support the WYD trip. Donations are also

welcome!

One of the regular ways that the good works of our “COTLF

Charities” organization takes place is through the resources given in

generosity to the Poor Box. Located in the back of church, near the

Saint Anthony statue, the Poor Box is available to receive your donations, sacrifices, and gestures of almsgiving and

penance which, in turn, are utilized to support and assist the poor, the needy, and those in emergency circumstances.

Although lately the weekly Poor Box collection is around $110.00, the resources required to assist the needy are far more

extensive. Last year, for example, more than $19,500 was spent by COTLF Charities organization in support of the poor

and needy in our parish territory. Thank you for considering providing a gift of support to assist the most vulnerable.
