The Editorial Team wishes to extend its appreciation to all the students in the manner they carried out them-

selves during this year’s Cultural Week. Despite the hiccups, the exercise went on smoothly and many enjoyed beside participating in various activities during the week.

It was awesome learning and eating dif-ferent food from different cultures and promoting as well as celebrating our unity in diversity. We do hope that next years Cultural week will outsmart this years.

The First Elections to inject new blood to the recently elevated University to a fully fledged University was done in amazing manner. The turn out of the voters was more than usual.

Long queues were witnessed till dusk and comrades never tired to exercise their democratic right in the campus premises.

Special thanks goes to SEC Chairperson Mohamed Issak and Presiding Officer together with their lieutenants for the way they conducted the exercise in a free, fair and transparent manner.

From the Editor in Chief

I take this opportunity to thank God the Almighty for the far He has brought us together. I dedicate

my happiness too to the Manage-ment, University Council and the Senate of the University of Kabianga in their administrative roles in seeing this mightiest institution progres-sively growing fast and furious.

To the Students Governing Council, I salute you all for your work well done and appointing me to this docket.

To the Student fraternity, fellow readers and writers, as I pen down this message, I am humbled by the task before us, grateful for the trust you have bestowed in me, mindful of the sacrifices borne by our predeces-sors. In this time, we want to choose hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord.

In affirming the greatness of our University, we must understand that its greatness in the public domain is never given. It must be earned. And as we embark on journey of market-ing this institution far and beyond, we all have that mandate to do our best regardless of titles before our names. It takes us working hard in our aca-demic issues, innovation and living in an informed world. Behaving in a decorum and working in sobriety and circumvention without chink of ideas

will help preach the message to the world. We must too acknowledge that if we cannot do great things: we must do small things in a great way.

As we live in a competitive world and institutions with different histories, we should accept the fact that we have a singular history but a shared destiny. University of Kabianga has its own history, unique and place, from grass heading to grace.

We must develop a positive mind and strive in making the place better than we found, indeed, you cannot live a positive life with a negative mind. We may not be in a league of other insti-tutions but you change your thoughts and you change your world. We should not compare ourselves with others because we do not know what their journey has been about.

Change is constant. As the world changes, so we must change with it. In the end it is not going to matter how many breaths you took to bring change, but how many moments took away your breath

As our esteemed institution marks one year since award of Charter and independence, the question should not be who gonna let us, but rather who gonna stop us from progress-ing...

To my fellow comrades, the season may not have gone well to some of us, but we have shown patience over anxiety. We have behaved in a mature way and as Boris Pastanack said that: “It is not revolutions and upheavals that will clear the road to new and better days. But revelations, lavish-ness and torments of someones soul, inspired and ablaze.” I salute you all.

As I conclude, let me thank my Edi-torial crew for the hard work they did

in making sure this magazine comes into existence. Challenges were there but Kevin Ombagi, Francis Kituku and sister Maureen Bogomba stood firm. You are great people to work with.

Special thanks to the office of the Dean for the consistent support of-fered. To the ICT department and SGC at large, we shall forever remain indebted to you for making this noble assignment a success. To the readers, it is my hope that you will enjoy reading these compre-hensive articles from inspirational writing, relationships and many other informatory piece of writings.

God bless UoK, God bless Kenya

As a fully-fledged University, we are committed to quality service delivery and provid-

ing a learning environment that is grounded on intellectual and aca-demic freedom, quest for excellence, professionalism, discipline and we strive for continuous improvement of programmes and services so as to

achieve client satisfaction. I urge all the students to commit themselves and rise to their respon-sibility to give back to society what has been given to them. As the years pass your generation will be judged not only by what you do to yourself and your family but by the contri-butions you make to others- your community and your country.

Students should be able to uti-lize the opportunity that has been granted to them to pursue academic excellence. The education acquired plays a critical role in the revolu-

Administration

tionary processes of making the world a better place.

I also urge the students to play their role in building the univer-sity of Kabianga that will make all the stakeholders proud. Let us be focused to our goals and take each challenge as it comes. Then and only then will your goals be clear and obstacles will fade. For as the saying goes- “Obstacles are what we see when we lose sight of our goals”.

DVC ACADEMICS & STUDENTS AFFAIRS

This is my first message to the readers of Sentinel Magazine since the award of the Charter.

I am proud of the good work of our student Editorial Team of the Maga-zine and our University.

Let me take this opportunity to thank you all for the cooperation, support and innovation you have provided from article collection, designing and up to the production. Special thanks goes to the editorial board who have put their effort to ensure that this information is consolidated and pub-lished as a magazine. University of Kabianga has a long history. It started as a campus of Moi University in 2007 and then as a con-stituent College of Moi University in 2009 before it was awarded Charter on 1st March 2013 by His Excellency Hon Mwai Kibaki, the 3rd President of Republic of Kenya. Currently the University has six (6) Schools and

over sixty one (61) Programmes both undergraduate and post graduate and a population of 5,657 spread in its four campuses (4).

The Academic Division deals with all issues pertaining to Academic and Student Affairs which comprises of the following Section: schools, ad-missions, Examination, Library and Student Affairs.Like any University, student magazine is a mirror of the University life. It reflects the literary, educational and sporting activities going on in the University. It states the important events celebrated in the Univer-sity during a certain month or year. Therefore it is an important tool for information, communication and ex-change of ideas to the student popu-lation and University at large.

It is my assumption that this maga-zine prepares you as a student, for the future by giving you training in concentration of thoughts, ideas and discipline. It can educate and prepare students for the different roles in the society which they will certainly play in the near future. The young writers and poets get ex-cellent opportunity for displaying the talent. Essays, short stories, poems, informative articles are written by students and are published in this

Magazine. This cultivates a fine liter-ary taste among the students.

In this way the Magazine helps boost new talent. The young budding authors and poets are encouraged a lot when their works are published in the Magazine. Obviously, it is rare pleasure to see one’s work in print Magazine.

The sports and cultural reporters give information on sports events and cultural activities like the recent con-cluded cultural week, Drama, Music, debate and seminars. Thus we learn great deal about manifold educational and sports activities of the University.

To all esteemed readers of Sentinel, it is my expectation that this first edi-tion of the University of Kabianga is informative, enjoyable and insightful.

Lastly but not the least; I thank the editorial team for the job well done. Thank you once again.

May God bless you all.

Administration

It is more than a pleasure to contrib-ute to this first issue of the students magazine since the university

acquired new status. It is indeed a mile-stone we should all mark with pride and continue working hard and diligent to achieve the greater heights we all cherish. In 2012, the University received the International Standards of Organiza-tions (ISO 9001:2008) Certification despite being a Constituent College by then. Within a period of 3 months later, 1st March, 2013 to be precise, the University was awarded a coveted title; “The Charter” by the immediate former President of the Republic of Kenya His

Excellency Hon. Mwai Kibaki. The two events formed part of history of the institution as it entered into a league of institutions that can bench-mark with others around the globe.

With the ISO certification and the Charter award, the University is now able to develop a Service Char-ter which actually document how services are quickly delivered and how efficient the services are. It is also committed to sustaining quality service delivery to all its customers, basically the students.

Good corporate governance and prudent management of financial, material and human resource has resulted in significant development of modern infrastructure, recruitment and training of qualified personnel, acquisition of training and research facilities and equipment. These have enabled University of Kabianga to produce competent graduates in the fields of specialization.

The office handles all matters relat-ing to Administration and Finances under which are the various depart-ments that are directly and indirect-ly touches the students’ welfare. The office is also the custodian of the ISO 9001: 2008 Certification, a sec-tion that ensures the ISO process is maintained throughout the Univer-sity by adhering to the documented QMS procedures.

I sincerely thank the University Council, Management, Senate and the Students for their roles they have played in spearheading activities of the University.

As I conclude, allow me to share with you what James Wolfenson said that, “The slightest test of development is not the bureaucratic approval process but by the smile on a child’s face when a projects is successful”

The functions of the Division of Planning, Research and Devel-opment are geared to provid-

ing support to the enhancement of quality training of the students at all levels and their general welfare. High-lights are outlined below with regards to the activities that are carried out in the various sections of the Divi-sion in ensuring a conducive learning environment for our students.

PLANNING

The revised University of Kabianga’s Five Year (2010-2015) Strategic plan that is soon to be launched has laid down the ways and means which will be implemented in key areas for the University to achieve its vision of be-ing “A leading University in Scientific Innovation for the Betterment of Humanity”.For our students, this includes the

development of new programmes and fields of study that are relevant and beneficial to our people, and the accompanying recruitment of highly qualified staff.

RESEARCH, LINKAGES AND EX-TENSION

A productive scholar carries out re-search and disseminates the knowledge worldwide through conferences, work-shops and publications in journals. The University of Kabianga has a research fund amounting to Kshs.4.8 million for the Academic Year 2013/2014 that has been variously allocated to the five existing schools on the basis of the budgetary requirements of each. These research funds, although modest, are open for project applications by the staff and post graduate students. How-ever, there are deliberations on whether the fund can provide some financial

support to undergraduate projects, as it continues to grow.

DEVELOPMENT

This entails the active improvement of facilities and infrastructure in the main University of Kabianga Campus and its other campuses. This will ensure the ef-fective and efficient curricular develop-ment and delivery. The projects being undertaken include but are not limited to the construction of Lecture Theatre Blocks III (complet-ed) and II (ongoing), the recently com-pleted Hostel 7, the laying of fibre optic cable, and the recent acquisition of new lecture halls for the Town Campus in the Sinendet Multipurpose Towers.

Students Governing Council

The journey to where we are today started with one step. I bless the Almighty God for giving me an

opportunity to exercise my leadership qualities in University of Kabianga. It is not easy as they say but the workload is worthwhile. May I also thank fellow com-rades, who have created history in my life for electing me to be the first President of University of Kabianga.

UoK is endowed with tremendous wealth no doubt. Besides the abundant exquisite natural wealth, the finesse and acclaim of her students and staff is an envy to many people. Her daughters and sons have, and continue to raise bar in spheres of health, scientific research, technological innova-tions, Business Education, religion and spirituality. We profoundly appreciate them.

With the University obtaining a char-ter, we now have a fully fledged system of handling issues and coming up with ideas. This has landed at our door steps as a people “lifetime” opportunities like this have to be embraced by people. In converse, it also reveals a myriad of challenges in our University, it is these challenges that we as comrades, Alumni, Professionals and administration of the institution makes sure that we position ourselves strategically and embrace the challenges as opportunities.

To embrace the challenges as opportuni-ties, the role and the position of each individual in the University must be interrogated and evaluated by themselves more than ever. I would like to remind ourselves to: network, appreciate, learn, listen to and link with other stakehold-ers around the globe so that we realize greater and maximum potential of ours.

As the Governing Council, we want to bring together the comrades, alumni and professionals so that we can have a continued fight for development of the University and the students welfare. Chance favours a prepared mind, we have to be prepared, fore educated, fore armed and strategically positioned for the op-portunities ahead.

To anybody wishing to join UoK, wel-come to the University of Scientific inno-vation and excellence, home of diversity but be careful which side of diversity you fall. Albeit, my advice to you is be posi-tive because negatives are there always. As Lester Sumrall writes in “The making of a Champion” No walls can be build without a foundation. You gotta have the heart to do what you don’t want to do. Understand that there is no turning back once God has set the direction for your life... No excuses... No hesitation... No compromise... Hold up under attack.

May God bless University of Kabianga and May He help us keep on moving.

“No walls can be build with-out a foundation. You gotta have the heart to do what you don’t want to do. Under-stand that there is no turn-ing back once God has set the direction for your life”

Message from Vice Chairperson

Comrades……..

A time comes when society has to arise to take break off from its limitations and get to maximize

its potential. This is however only pos-sible when individuals take up their posi-tions to realize their individual potentials, who they are and their role in the world.

Nothing that is conceivable is unachiev-able; to many it may begin at the root core of re-evaluation of their past, present and future while for others continuity towards already cultivated discipline and hard work. Whichever point we are at on a personal level it’s upon us to decide to ensure we get to achieve our best. This always begins with self discovery. No individual is born to fail or to live at the peripheries of life; it all depends on the accumulation of our many choices. Suc-cess costs something, it’s never handed on a silver platter and that’s why so many go to motivational talks and eventually achieve so little.

Few people are ready to pay the cost of being on top, many will desire the beauty but none may be ready to take the heat that comes with it. As we arise as indi-viduals to achieve the maximum of our potential then we shall stand to watch society transformed, our institutions transformed and our lives steer towards success, contentment and happiness. I wish all of us the best in this journey called life and let us always remember that we have already met our enemy who is self. Our external life is simply a reflec-tion of our inner self, lets aim at cultivat-ing beauty from within and eventually this beauty will not be hidden, it will flow to our external environment. May God bless us and University of Kabianga as we move towards our dreams.

INSPIRATION

Fellow comrades, in his words, Charles Spurgeon said,” Our anxi-ety doesn’t empty tomorrow of its

sorrows, it only empties today of its strength.”

We have a long way to go as much as our goals realization and whatsoever everyone is up to, is concerned, as this is dependent upon his grace the Almighty God. Determination and focus will result into elevation of new thoughts and transformation at different angles of our studentship. Should we want to uphold unity, then we ought to know that the University of Kabianga has people from diverse regions of our nation Kenya who are ready to join hands together to initi-ate changes in the institution.

Be transformed to transform others. It should therefore be noted that changes in life are always made at different ends but none can make a change unless he/she makes one for him or herself.Let’s major on our majors and minor on our minors rather than carping always for these will amount to absurdity and it will only be something ephemeral that brings nothing plausible at last. We should have a desire to have a sense of direction and always abide by the prin-ciples that, “where hope grows, miracles blossom”.

However much thoughts appear in quick succession in one’s mind, the either way lies the statement; nothing worthwhile comes by chance. There must be endur-ance, toiling and moiling for the dream realization to come into reality.

BY: GICHUNGE ELIJAH

THE POWER OF PATIENCE

We are born from different backgrounds and family status. Some are born from

extremely poor background where bread and butter is only observed during im-portant celebrations such as Christmas or Eid events. Others are from well off background, while others stay heaven on earth. That is how God is fair anyway. At time you do not need to worry or question why you were bred in a certain family and not others. Racial affilia-tion is a basis of chasmic life as well as education level and more recently; the morals of humanity has deviated and detached itself from the normity and ap-plied animosity of corruption, nepotism, tribalism and religionism which are kill-ing physical and technical opportunities among many. It furthers and too widens the rift between the poor and the rich.

Despite all this, an individual ought to live a life of contentment. Buddha, on this issue said, “Health is the greatest gift, contentment is the greatest wealth and faithfulness is the best relationship.” Avoid comparing your life with others as you do not know how their journey have been but have hope and faith towards the creator. Remember, hope is the thing with feathers that pearches in the soul and sings the tune without words and never stops at all. Aristotle described hope as a waking dream. With hope, fo-cus and hard work you live a positive life full of bliss and blessings since you can’t live a positive life with a negative mind.

Bob Marley said that none but ourselves can free our minds. Your life is an oc-casion, rise to it. Do not feel lonely; the

entire universe is within you. Cut the past, shut the future and live the present. Dance in it like there is no one watch-ing; love like you will never be hurt, sing like nobody is listening and live like it’s heaven on earth- William W. Purkey.

Remember patience will always pay. You may plan this way but God is the master planner. If things do not go as you planned, pay tribute to the world of patience. There will always be an alterna-tive. Hellen Keller whispered about this that, “ When one door closes, another opens; but we often look so long and regretful upon the closed door that we do not see the one that has been opened for us.” Never give up life. Never think that all is impossible. Use the challenges as the stepping stones to your greatness and still keep in mind that no road exists without corners and bends.

Your present circumstances do not determine where you can go, but merely determines where you start. Arthur Ashe on this matter added that you start where you are, use what you have and do what you can. Ronald Reagan was too con-cerned with the masses and gave them a secret that, “We can’t help everyone but everyone can help someone.” This indeed is a genesis of life. Your life is a message to the world, live then to inspire. Avoid being the product of circumstances but rather product of decisions and choice. As I sum up, take this from Richard L. Evans, “Don’t let life discourage you; everyone who got where he is had to begin where he was,” and “If you cannot do great things; do the small things in a great way.” By ABDULKARIM TARAJA.

University of Kabiangais born

Inception

1st March, 2013 at the Kenyatta Inter-national Conference Centre (KICC) in the Kenya’s Capital City, curtain of

Kabianga College was lowered while that of University of Kabianga being raised up.

Moment of Sigh for the University Council, the management and Students who were all entangled and enmeshed in cherishing this achievement was palpa-ble. This epidemic joy mounted as former Head of State His excellency retired President Hon Mwai Kibaki presented the Charter to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Wilson Kipngeno together with the Chairperson of The University Council Dr. Florence Nyamu.

The journey that began way back in 1925 achieved its pinnacle milestone on this very day. The office of the Principal and his Deputies were buried to the world of no return and a baby, UNIVERSITY OF KABIANGA was born. Office of

the Chancellor, Vice Chancellor and Deputy Vice Chancellors were created and new post advertised. The University of Kabianga detached itself from the long serving mother, Moi University in peace to become a fully fledged University.

The local community ambiance pragmat-ically were overwhelmed by the news and during the inaugural ceremony, flocked in numbers to celebrate this historic journey within their vicinity as they are the basic publics.

The tower of strength had descended and words of wisdom, blessings and encour-agements were all poured to the Univer-sity council, management and student fraternity.

Prof. Richard Musangi entered into the history of University of Kabianga as the first Chancellor of the fast growing institution in the southern part of the Rift Valley.

In his inaugural speech, the Chancel-lor, Prof. Richard Musangi extended his pleasure and congratulations to the former President Hon Mwai Kibaki and the government at large for the elevation of the institution and his appointment to serve in the capacity.

He appreciated the University Council and management for what they had achieved within a period of four years. “The University have achieved much within the four years and this is a very short gestation period for the growth due to a hardwork of the previous and present council.” said the Chancellor.

He further acknowledged the humble beginning of the institution and termed as a real history. He thanked the local community for their continued support in seeing the university acquire the new status.

Inaugural graduation

All the roads led to the Univer-sity of Kabianga. The choppers touched down in the campus

field. The multitude arrived early in the morning full of ecstacy. The media mounted their cameras at the Pavillion and within no time the procession ar-rived. Everyone wanted to be part and parcel of the great historic moment in the University of Kabianga.

The First ever Graduation of its kind. It was historic in three ways. First, it was the the First Graduation Ceremony to be held in the University graduation presided by the University’s Chancel-lor and not Moi University Chancellor. Secondly, the first Graduation held in the institution after Devolved Govern-ment was in place and thirdly, the best Student in the year was a person with different ability.

Graduands arrived a day earlier and underwent rehearsal for their D-Day. As early as 8.00 a.m in the morning, the soccer field was full to the brim of unu-sual guests seated and eagerly waiting for the guest speakers to arrive. Those in attendance included but not limited to the Deputy President His Excellency William Ruto, who was a Chief Guest, PS Ministry of Education Dr. Bellio

Kipsang, Kericho County Governor Prof. Chepkwony, Kericho County Senator Charles Keter, Elgeiyo-Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen among many other dignitaries in the political arena as well as academic sphere.

The Academic Procession consisting of the Students Representatives, Alumni Representatives, Academic staff, mem-bers of Senate, representative of other Universities and Colleges were the first to match to the dais.

“In a colorful ceremony presided by the first Chancellor, a total of 545 graduands were conferred with the Masters, Undergradu-ate degrees as well as award of Diploma certificates”

The multitude arose and stood in honour of the Country as the National Anthem was humbly sang. Then, the event was dedicated to God with a prayer led by the University Chaplain Pastor Abong. Even the physically challenged members of the society did their best to show allegiance to the Most high. It was then time for speeches.

In her remarks, the Chairperson of the University Council Dr. Florence Nyamu thanked the Government of Kenya for their continued support to the Univer-sity. She appealed to the government to continue supporting the University as it continues to expand too. She said that the university Council shall continue to mobilize resources from within for capacity building in support for academic programmes.

The Chancellor, Prof. Richard Musangi thanked the Government for elevat-ing the institution into a fully fledged University. The Chancellor described the whole process as a great milestone both to the University and the graduands.

“The University as whole has a reason to celebrate this being the pioneering gradu-ands of this institution who have placed themselves in a historic chapters of this institution.”

On the matters of infrastructure, the DP categorically stated that the government will set aside Kshs. 400 million and fur-ther Kshs. 100 million from the Kericho County government to aid in tarmack-ing the road from Premier to Taploting. These sentiments were a blessing to the Students and staff more than before.

Matters of cause and effect are irrefutably logical. We ought to adhere and consider our contemporary social interactions. Hardly do matters of social relation take course accidentally. They pop out sequen-tially, one after the other of course prompt-ed by their respective causative agents.

Someone can’t just go dumb on you without a reason. No sober being can walk away from you just like that! There lies a conc reason behind that peculiar mannerism. Every move has a cause and by the time the worst invites itself to you, then something somewhere must have gone wrong. The sweetness in love must have turned sour or the joy/pride of friendship must have been overpowered by hate. Your partner could be saying, “I don’t miss you, I miss the person I thought you were” because you might have been ideally good from far but really far from good. Take care! Beef up and be good.

It’s a cliché that actions speak louder than words. As a matter of repetition, every ac-tion commands the kind of response given. What you do with or for the person you claim to be in love with leaves an impact which can be positive or negative. You not only need to be cautious about what you say but also what you do. Scrutinize yourself and understand your weaknesses because you may be the cause of all your break-ups. Acquiesce your faults and embrace change.

You might have capitalized on the things that are of no relevance to your relation-ship. Instead of your love growing, it may end up suffering from stunted growth or worse still, wither gradually. We are hardly

taught some of these things by our parents/guardians or by the instructors within the four corners of academic halls. The bond between the duo is cre-ated by love. Love is reinforced by trust. Trust is strengthened by understanding whereas understanding is the root cause of friendship.

We should appreciate the fact that freedom comes with equal measure of responsibility. You have an ample op-portunity to secure for yourself a life companion. If need be, have responsible and healthy relationships that can tran-scend our current level. Don’t waste your time in illicit relationships characterized by exploitation and satisfaction caused by the contextual pleasures because they precede great regrets amid adverse psychological effects.

The reality is beetroot bitter. That is why it is painful to see the person you whole-heartedly love drift away

with someone else. Often times we get withdrawn and pour all sorts of accusations against them. One spontaneously turns gloomy and hate emanates within to drive out the love that had developed a ‘strong’ bond initially.

We see the other party with a third eye. We perceive them as the worst people in the world, foolish, stupid, opportunistic, betrayers, heart breakers, gold-diggers, heartless amid other negative descriptions. Worse is it when your folks had advised you to go home with two degrees. You may be like me, striving to be the first person to get married to a graduate in your village. Such ups and downs may drive you to junctions of desperation or by-passes of depression.

On a logical note, this shouldn’t be the case. I’ve fallen prey to these quite a number of times and experience has given me a totally new view and take on this matter. Before painfully pointing that finger, we should ponder both sides of the coin. As much as you are entitled to believe you are ever right, the contrary may be an irrefutable fact. The good book warns us from being wise in our own eyes.

We may be so much concerned about climbing the ladder not knowing that the ladder is leaning on the wrong wall. We should not bank on bankruptness of knowl-edge, inadequacy of wisdom and wealth of ignorance. School grades a times prove ir-relevant in matters of love and relationships basing on the numerous mistakes that befall the so called learned.

In the lands of Kericho county lies this blissful, conspicuous renown institu-tion-the university of Kabianga-aka

UOK. Being set up in an expanse amongst humongous tea plantations, the university gives an impression of charm and elegance to the passers-by. This in turn gives its students a great ardor and enthusiasm to be associated with this marvelous institution.

For starters, the life and survival methodol-ogy of a Kabiangan is largely stipulated by two aspects...i.e...Course undertaken and wallet density. You know what I mean! That’s a fact bearing in mind the different schools in UOK. Well… I mean the life style of any typical Kabiangan is under the monitorship of the two paramount forums. As per one of the core values of UOK: - fos-tering teamwork, collaboration, creativity and innovation.., most students in demand-ing schools such as the imminent school of education and social sciences, engineering, nursing, environmental and public health and the school of science and technology feverishly form syndicates that enable them to outmaneuver the academic challenges faced by individual existentialism as far as studies are concerned. On the contrary some students from the less demanding schools such as BTM and school of busi-ness studies just to mention a few.., take it

easy and rarely do they struggle and fancy spending most of their time rollicking in the students business center (SBC).

Let’s take a typical week for an epitome and evaluate the culture of Kabiangans. During weekdays most students tend to be busy with their class work and only dissolve syndicates in evenings when the interested comrades with fervor of co-curriculars dispel the academic tiredness through a variety of games harbored in UOK. This is due to the realization of the dictum that goes...-success does not come from acrimo-nious divisions of hateful paralysis. During these equinoxes, the dress code is not of much concern but majority of the comrades don…amazing, gob smacking, startling, perplexing, I mean something like….. Oh my goodness!! The digital trend as they call it…you know!!On Fridays and Saturdays, an immense number of Kabiangans abandon their default demure dress codes and stick to their usual weekend regalia…you know what I mean. As most parties, irreparable bashes and picnics take their due course and most guys take these days as favorites due to imbibition. As fate would have it, the less fortunate humans with XY gene com-bination and the feminine likes consider these equinoxes to be the most boring and remorseful moments and like spend most of their time hibernating if not ostentation in their sanctums. Huh!! That’s the case es-pecially when one is as broke as hell. To the contrary those guys who are never startled by the dentation of their wallets and possess a high blood pressure of ability creeds less the anemia of deeds find it the best time to prove their prowess and amicable panache to their paramours. I mean their favorite halves. The most exhilarating moments is when there is inevitable fabulous functions in the

campus such as the inauguration ceremo-nies and cultural weeks whereby most com-rades gather optimum fun without much ado since meagre cash will be wringed out of their purses bearing in mind that no transport costs, entrance fees or any other miscellaneous expenditures need to be met. Thanks to the campus entertainment department. However, the most quandary moments in the campus are during the 11th to the 14th week. I mean the examination period. Those folks who are ever garrulous are much more perturbed during this sophisti-cated but inevitable era and find it lengthy to dispel the turmoils in their wits and appear rueful due to the existence of “sups”. It is during this time that the libraries stink full to the brim with students. I once hap-pened to visit this resource center to get a book and it was like bah!! I couldn’t get it since people had borrowed almost all the vital books. Huh! Anyway It’s normal..!! But as fate would have it, the fellows with syndicates are ever ecstatic, flamboyant and always have a myriad of positive academic expectations. Lastly, let’s talk about the ministry of health as depicted in the meals department. It has been found that Kabiangans have… let’s just call it funny but admissible pat-tern as far as the consumption of meals is concerned. In the beginning of semesters seldom will u find lengthy queues in the food court I mean “the mess”. No wonder almost everyone have adequate quids to squander at the students business center for meals and refreshments. However towards the end of semesters all the buddies who spent their monies in the SBC stick to their usual mchele dengu with that soup ya gava or even ugali veges in the “mess”.huh!! Is dat funny? Maybe…but no wonder it is all about the Kabianga culture just like any other culture. My question is –are you among these compact majority in UOK?

I wish to express my appreciation to the Editorial board who made tireless effort to ensure the suc-

cess of this great 1st Sentinel Maga-zine of the University since its in-ception as a fully fledged University.Within my docket as a Secretary Gen-eral, I am grateful for the mandate you bestowed on me. I assure you that we shall always be at the frontline as the ambassadors of all. It goes without doubt tha UoK is making great. strides.

I urge all my fellow students to always take challenges positively, convert them into the opportunities and aid them to realize and aim at the best which Phi-losopher King terms it an “Summum bonum”. God above all gives us wisdom to act decisively and responsibly in serving our constituents. To all fellow comrades, let us be guided by the spirit of togeth-

erness and brotherhoodness, collective responsibility and peaceful coexistence. The future of our nation Kenya is within your reach. “Indeed, it is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who takes the credit”.-Harry Truman.

Life Experience

Many have defined what success is and how one can achieve it. You will hear many peo-

ple basing their success on academic performance. This view of success clicks my mind every time and I wonder about those who never had the opportunity to hear about school. Therefore the view might be accepted but to some point it is limited. More over, you will find many struggling to excel in a particular field which perhaps is not what they are good at.

I do not dismiss the idea that success can be achieved through academic excellence, but I believe there is more to that. Excel-lence is everywhere. Simply think of what you can do best and do it. I mean work on your talent. We have heard of great people who have been very successful in life not because they were geniuses but because they understood what they could do and did their best on the same. To me achievement is acting what is in your mind to bring about development for the betterment of humanity.

Sometimes in my walk around campus, I carry out studies and I have realized that many people have been gifted but are silent with their gifts. The outcome of this is that, after campus, they “tar-mac” seeking to get employment. Let us touch on these issues; Knowledge is more profitable when it is developed to a skill. I believe one with an action mind can do something and find progress in life. Of course a long journey starts with a single step. A campus story is told of a funny guy who used to walk room to room making jokes all over. People liked his way of liv-ing and revered him a lot. All he owned

was a small mobile phone which was a bit ‘analog’ but at least this phone could do audio recording. To sustain himself he could wash others’ clothes and do all sorts of ‘odd’ jobs. He never stopped to look around who would laugh or jeer him. This unique characteristic made him become famous. From this I under-stood that, if you plan to start a journey, do not look at your neighbor who does not even know the end of that journey you are starting.

One day the gentleman sat and won-dered; just like any other business has competition, so was his. Many other people started to take up his idea and also made money. ‘What else should I do to fit in this environment and sustain myself?’ he asked himself. No sooner had he thought of anything than a yesterday friend appeared. His name was Shauri. Shauri informed Maghanga the funny guy about how happy his roommates were the previous night after the jokes he had made in their room. He wished that Maghanga could repeat the jokes at that point but, alas! He couldn’t. He expressed his apology to his friend, and soon after parting ways Maghanga had an idea. He understood that jokes make people happy and get joyful, but they are short lived. He also did appreciate that he could make people laugh. He however needed a long term record of the jokes. He therefore devised a way of recording every episode in his phone.

With a good accumulation of the stories he could produce an audio CD of which he sold to his fans. Amazing! He had created a job for himself which was really paying him. Maghanga made a lot of pro-gress and later on, this small idea of his,

enabled him to start a media production firm. Funny enough he had never done a cause related to business or even mass media, but just decided to act his mind.It is amazing what human beings can do if only they act what they think of doing. God created each one of us with some-thing very unique that will keep us and sustain us in our lives. Every one has a part to play in this world and not unless you think and act your part, you will keep struggling and leaving the gap you were to fill, unfilled.

Never say, I will do this and that if this happens. An individual failure to suc-ceed, in most cases, the blame is ever either capital, or something of the sought. In fact most people blame lack of money. Money will never be enough, and above all I believe, a bird in hand is worthy two in the bush. Use that which you have to get started to reach that which you have not.As a parting shot a lot of rich content on your ability your future is found in my book ‘Prove your Title’. The moment I discovered that I could write stories, poems, and songs I did so. I love singing and this is my talent apart from these other things that I do. I have learnt music production on my own and this has made me understand that having a passion for something makes one achieve great in the area. I do songs which educate people on life issues and those that express adora-tion to God. I keep saying and I will say it again, that there is no reverse gear for life so do your best.

As you read this I ask you to keep an open mind until you evaluate everything I have to say. One of

the purpose of Islam is to establish that we are not animals, and to put us on the right path so that we do not behave like animals.

When we look at animal behaviors, we see that animals take their sexual pleas-ure whenever and wherever they can. This is how Allah ensures the continued survival of their species. Never forget that human beings are not animals, so although we have bodies quite similar, we relate our bodies to our needs as be-ings who have had God’s Consciousness breathed into us while in our mothers’ womb. This special spiritual nature pro-vides us with many wonderful benefits but it also presents us with very serious responsibilities. Why does Islam prohibit dating?? Why is the boy-girl relationship discouraged in Islam? The Qur’an answers,”Those who invoke not, with Allah, any other god, nor slay life as God has made sa-cred except for just cause nor commit fornication and any that does this (not only) meets punishment, (but) the pen-alty on the day of judgement will be doubled to him and he will dwell there in ignominy” (Al-Furqan 25:68-69). In

this verse, the sin of fornication is ranked the third after the sin of associating partners with Allah and the sin of mur-der. Furthermore, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) had to say this about fornication, “The one who commits illegal sexual in-tercourse is not a believer at the time of committing the illegal sexual intercourse.”Let me talk about something on boy-girl relationship and sexual engagement be-fore marriage. What Islam says is easy to remember because we are told that before marriage there is to be virtually no contact between male and female. However, in the current generation, an increasing number of muslims indulge in pre-marital rela-tionships that are clearly outside the lim-its set by Islam. These relationships range from seemingly innocent friendships to boyfriend-girlfriend affair all the way to complete sexual intimacy for those who are legally married . What is the wisdom behind prohibition of sexual relationships before marriage? We will start by the most serious cost; STI’s which can lead to myriad of nasty diseases from simple pain and discomfort, disfigurement to life-long diseases such as cancer. For example, did you know that females who have slept with more than three people over a lifetime are 15 times vulnerable to cervical cancer? Another cost is divorce. The reality is that a cou-

ple who engages in sex before marriage is most likely to divorce, as said in the Qur’an that, “A fornicator does not mar-ry except a fornicator”. Many ladies nev-er expect such things as inured mother-hood, unwanted children and abortion to befall them but these terrible things do happen when in wrong relationships. Some people think that one has to have lots of practice to get good at sex and if not, they will have a second rate love life when married. Well, contrary to that popular belief, study shows that those who do choose to wait for sex until mar-riage are not doomed to second class sex life at all. Instead they usually have significantly higher level of sexual satis-faction and marital contentment. I guess nothing is romantic and erotic as having a marriage partner who has never expe-rienced those most intimate moments with anyone but you. Seems reasonable to me!!!It is my prayer that in this short but rea-sonably insightful article, I have been able to help the entire campus teenag-ers in deciding rightfully. Please, do not do something that can hurt you in a way that you can never fully recover from. Do your part to make right all the wrongs of the world. The world of the future can be a virtual paradise on earth. This is the destiny offered to us by Allah.

A moment with God

You can speak your truth clearly and quietly; listen to others even the ignorant and dull; they too have a story to tell.

Don’t compare yourself with oth-ers for you may become bitter; for there will always be lesser and great people than yourself.

Keep interested in what you own with humility as you enjoy your plans and achievements. It is your

real possession in your fortune change of times.

Please don’t be blinded by the vir-tue of prosperity. Be yourself and don’t feign affection. Take kindly the counsel of years and nurture your strength of spirit.

Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness; be gentle with yourself “you are a child of the universe”, whether it is clear to you no doubt

the universe is unfolding itself as it should.

Be at peace with God and con-ceive Him the best in your life amidst the noisy confusion of life in your labors and aspirations; be at peace with yourself in this beautiful world as you strive to be happy here on earth and in heaven.

Ama kwa hakika, subira huvuta kheri, namna wenye lugha wal-ivyosema. Maisha yana changa-

Clubs and Societies

The Debate Club was instigated by Elijah Mwangi and Liatema Munyu (Both Alumni of UoK

class of 2013) way back in 2009 when UoK was still a constituent college of Moi University. The duo saw an urgency to come up with a club that could tap in the individual potential of comrades.

They formed the Art Society Club that deals with a variety of Art; poems, songs, dance and drama. So as a club we are a department under Art society.

The first task of the club was to find a way to take part in the Pan African Debate Championship in South Africa held in December 2012. They managed to raise funds through sponsors especially the GEOKARMA construction company. The team that went included Elijah Mwangi, Norah Chepkoech as the debaters and Nessi Kimani as a judge.Together they reached the quarter finals of the tourna-ment beating over 400 Universities in the process out of over 600 Universities that participated from across Africa.

In 2013, they injected “new blood” into the club to take part in the Kenya Inter-University debate and public speaking championship in May at Strathmore University.

In the public speaking category, Arthur Muhia emerged fifth overall while in the debate category, two teams managed to reach the semi-finals in their maiden tournament. Team 1 comprising of Mau-rice Juniour and Alicemercy Wanjiru. Team two having Dennis Muturi and Emmanuel Melly. Liatema Munyu, Alicemercy Wanjiru and Elijah Mwangi emerged 2nd, 4th and 9th respectively. The tournament was won by the University of Nairobi Parklands with JKUAT, Daystar and others being the weeping boys of the tournament.

Later that year, the club participated in the AMNESTY Human Rights Debate at St Paul’s University, Limuru in Au-gust. The jinx would have its way as UoK teams reached the semifinal stage.

Team 1(AliceMercy Wanjiru & Maurice Junior), team 2 (Dennis Muturi & Caleb Kosgei). However, there was some solace as Elijah Mwangi came 2nd in the public speaking category beating other 65 contestants. Emmanuel Melly & Liatema Munyu however did not make it to the championships which was a big blow to the team. With Elijah and Liatema Munyu already out, the club is headed by Alicemercy Wanjiru. It plans to win both the Kenya Inter-varsity Debates and AMNESTY Human Rights debate as well as to scoop the public speaking category in both tournaments. The club also plans to go airborne and represent Kenya in the Pan Africa Debate championships to be held in Cameroon (December 2014). Sponsors are highly welcomed.

One thing for certain is that, the tro-phy is with us and we will not be shaken until Jerusalem is set upon a hill and our enemies trampled beneath our feet.

It’s all about education to peers-encouragement and the sweet talk by “Elders” and at the end of it refresh-

ments available .You don’t wanna miss this big thing in Kabianga . And if you are not in the movement, comrades you are missing something great in your life.I choose life Africa, a movement well or-ganized with simple rules, a movement that you never want to let go once you’re in it. It’s made up of small organization

called the BCCG some comrades call it ‘Boys Carelessly Calling Girls’ but you know what, they are just wrong! BCCG means Behaviour Change Community Group . Which help us to reach to the common Mwananchi in the Streets of Kabianga . Sex, Drug abuse, Faithful-ness and Abstinence are just but a few of what we educate one another about . The interactions help in solving some of the challenges that we come across in our

lives. The sessions are free, very lively with great humor that help one relieve stress and at the pinnacle of it you are able to learn and express yourself.Other than just learning there are so many experiences that one acquires for instance, being trained to be a peer edu-cator which helps one to reach to other peers . Entertainment

There are many shortcuts to happiness and dancing hap-pens to be one of them. It

has been described as the hidden language of the soul or even the perpendicular expression of a hori-zontal desire but to many dancing is a poem of which each movement is a word that communicates volumes of information. There is no doubt that everybody can dance but what really makes a good dancer? A good dancer I believe

goes beyond yelling “Zimeni stima sasa tudance” and concentrates more on taking his/her game to the next level. Hard work, determination and practice goes beyond passion al-though you cannot rule out the latter. A good combination of the four is what brings the difference between a dancer and a wannabe dance where dancing is mostly powered by dark-ness (The zimeni stima fellow).

Before a routine is performed by a

group of dancers, it takes a lot of practice and perfecting which brings us to a conclusion that synchronized dancing is not easy as it seems. How-ever, there are few determined fellow who give it their all and make it all look like child play. Here are three dance groups from the University of Kabianga; one from Main campus and two from Kapkatet campus tell-ing us about what they do best.

Sports

It was precedential to be the most exciting cultural week in the history of this tournament. The vast talent of

2nd years and ferocious 3rd years cou-pled with the gullible 1st was not a thing to be missed. And of course, the experienced elders on display for the contention was a trophy; a trophy every player wants to win at least once in his life time at this University.

They say take your chances when they come, and in this case if you didn’t, you have to wait for another a year mile to have a go. For the elders (4th Years) you will have to bear while chewing a bitter lemon and watching in a movie.

The trophy is a regional tournament trophy annually held during the cultural celebration week of the University in a way of bringing together students in appreciating their diverse cultures. The teams in contention are RiftValley, Nyan-za, Central,Western, Eastern and Coast regions. Here players from the regions play for the region. It’s literally Kikuyu’s Vs Kalenjins, Luo’s vs Meruans et al. The fans in this games turns in humoung-ous numbers ready to cheer their teams, cursed is the man who lets them down. Tensions are usually high during such games; defeat is a vocabulary that no one wants its definition.

Pool A had Central, Nyanza and Rif val-

ley and was damned as Group of death. Central region being the defending champions in 2013 having beaten Rift valley the finalists. Pool B had Eastern, Western and Coast regions. This was 2014 and many prophets had changed over the year. To keep the matters simple, Rift Valley defeated Nyanza by a solidary goal fired by Apenyu Imana and beat Central two goals to one to reach the finals of the tournament.

What remained was a tense Central taking on Nyanza to clinch the 2nd and semi-finals spot and indeed the last. A draw of any kind would have favored the defending champions but one “Torres” had otherwise.

On the other pool, the Coasterians were indeed trashed 5-0 by Western before be-ing axed time and again 7-0 by the East-ern. The “Fundamentos” boys were up against the ‘Mukangala’ boys for the top spot in the group; and of course, to avoid the indomitable Rift Valley. It was 0-0 ten minutes to time but at the stoppage time, it was 1-1. After the extra time whistle, the teams headed for penalties where Vinnie and Ndugu missed a chance in a million.

Nyanza were having impeacable pen-altioes from Chuchu Alfred, Colo and Okoth. After Vinnie’s Penalty miss, what remained was Roba to send the Fish Boys to finals, a thing that he converted on the

spot.

Though the finals were met by controver-sy, it was played 5 days later and Rift Val-ley punished the Nyanza 2-0 and became the 2014 Cultural week Champions.

On the other sports news, Alex Limo won men Marathon while Joan Rotich did the same on the ladies category during the cultural week event. Rubgy, courtesy of Highlanders have had a good last part of the 2013 by beating Nakuru and Maseno.

Handball men team have too participated in the various tournaments this year and recorded good results. They played Kericho TTC and proceeded to Semis in tournament played at Kipchichim Pri-mary School. They also hold home games where they played Rongo University among other campuses and won all their home games.

Marathon team failed to represent the University in International Champion-ship held in RUSSIA last year November due to last minute withdrawal of the sponsors and the University could not find enough time to help them. However, the Team is calling any Well wishers to sponsor the participants in the coming competition.

Sports Culture Galore

The search for Mr. And Ms Uni-versity of Kabianga began with daily practices at the Lecture

Theatre. The group of beauty queens who all looked wonderfully and beautifully created accompanied by their unique sin-gular handsome dudes showcased their cat-walking styles in amazing fashions. Indeed, practice makes perfect; and on 15th of February, 2014, University of Kabianga ushered in its bosses.

Like most beauty pageants, the com-petitions was mainly based on physical beauty of the contestants with additional aspects of personality as well as the level of intelligence in answering questions posed by the judges.

The event is held annually by the Uni-versity in a way to bring the diverse of culture of its students from different parts of the country and promote interaction amongst them. The University of Kabi-anga held its famously the annual “Cul-tural Week” where the ultimate and the pinnacle of the event is the search for Mr.

And Ms University. Besides winning the coveted title, the winners are tasked to take noble responsibilities though in the University of Kabianga, their responsibil-ity is not well laid down. However, they are mandated to steer the fight of drug abuse in the campus, promoting peaceful co-existence amongst the students, suste-nance of the environment and promoting cultural diversity in the campuses. These responsibilities are yet to be reviewed by the UoK management and the UKSU constitution.

This years cultural week theme was “Our Country, Our Culture, our Heritage” and just like the previous simile events, it attracted dozens of hopeful contestants. The sky was clear that night with a cool breezing air and deem, dancing light at the Pavillion when the models were step-ping forward in style. Different dresses ranging from traditional to modern wears were worn and many could not even, when given chance to judge, to choose the best since they were all beauti-ful and handsome. At the end of the day,

judges made their choice known: Jacob Gikandi and Adhiambo were crowned Mr. And Miss Uok respectfully.

Gikandi 19, a Human Resource Manage-ment student and Shallin 20, a Tourism Management student impressed the judges and later made the day in a much competitive contest. Gikandi, after being crowned promised to fight for the full recognition of the title beyond the much celebrated title. He said that he would push the title holders be given well laid down roles to play within and without the University. He promised to fight drug abuse within the campus.

On her part, Miss Adhiambo’s infectious smile and innocent look with unique movement (in red dress above) out-smarted the rest. She pledged to lead a fight against Cervix and Breast Cancer in the society and address the issue of early pregnancy in girls as well as engage in various projects geared towards giving back to the community.

The search for Mr. & Ms. UoK

COMMITTING A CRIME AND ACCEPTING IS THE BEST POLICY

You never know the type of a snake until you rattle it, that is the time you will resolve on the wishful

thinking never to give it a trial.

I may appear odd and probably rascal but I refuse to accept the view that mankind is tragically bound to the starless midnight of crime and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never be-come a reality.

I believe that unarmed truth and uncon-ditional love will have the final word .No wonder, I submit that an individual who breaks the law that conscience tells him is unjust and willingly accepts the penalty by staying in jail to arouse conscience of the community over its injustice is in reality expressing the very highest respect for the law

No man is an ICON and wisdom strictly belongs to the father of holywrit we are merely impressers of wisdom .provided one is still stepping on the soil of the earth crime becomes part and parcel of life.I may not have read many books of holy scripture but my little grasp has it that one day when the priest and levite passed by a man lying in a pool of blood asked themselves what could be done to them when they leave the man alone but the good Samaritan reversed the question by asking what could be done to HIM when he leaves him alone we may have commit-ted a crime in our pursuit and felt guilty this may only necessitate memory lapse in our mental volume ,let us accept and enlighten the society on the nature and consequences of it………..

MIGHT IS RIGHT

In the current fast age of moderniza-tion and technology, the competition to gain power is increasing rapidly

to a greater extent. Anybody can feel pleased upon having any kind of power, whether it is power of money, social status or the governing right over other people. Power has always gained impor-tance and value in the past and it will be held important in the future too as it is the power only which provides a sense of security and satisfaction to a person.

You may have seen many people around you, who according to you are absolutely wrong in their different actions, but they prove themselves to be right and true. It’s only because of the power they have with them

There is no need to go far, have a look at your own self. You can easily gather the reason for a person’s decline or rise. It’s only a matter of might or power a person has. For instance, United States of America, (USA).

It was strongly condemned by the countries all over the world, for attacks on Afghanistan and Iraq, but it still went against the legal orders of UNO. The purpose of this organization died, but America is still practicing its own will.

Nobody is there to stop it from its bloodshed being carried out for oil. Even the countries which were opposing these attacks are allied for this destruction. What does it include? It says that might is always right. The US has been invad-

ing nations. Who is there to argue this invention? Nobody is willing to do in a strong worthy manner because of the fright of the super power. As the minds believe that, might is always right.

Consider the same scenario on a smaller level. Our great leaders, however corrupt they are, have never been questioned. Our former president, Mr Daniel Moi, and his government embezzled billions of shillings under the name of reforms which was piteous to see, the way they were carried out. Nobody inquired from him about all these. This was all because the people were occupied by ‘’Might Is Right.’’

If we have a look at our society, a gambler or a smuggler has more worth and value than a man earning through fair means, just because of the power which heaps of money has given him. Although good moral values are nice and sweet to hear of, but the pain and misery of hunger is really far away from this sweetness. Good values cannot re-duce the hunger of a dying child but the might of status and money can do it in a fraction of a moment.

Considering the above mentioned factors, one can easily gather that the power and might have crucial impor-tance in the current situation of the world. Although the morality has not come to a decline, but might holds more importance in this cruel world to sur-vive for our own selves.

So MIGHT IS ALWAYS RIGHT

Unity of Purpose

BALANCING ISSUES AND RISKING FACTORS:

I would like you to convey my words to our brothers and sisters who may or may not read this article; That

UNITY and SOLIDARITY are the two dispensable factors for realizing our liberty.

These words/lesson must be seriously taken to heart and also maintained against imperialist forces seeking to un-dermine our integrity and convert us into disintegrated groups which can easily be victimized and made to serve their selfish interests.

Our unity as comrades is capable of bringing other institutions of higher learning and the external world to rec-ognize our liberty and independence as

UoK provided for by the right of man…. Our great cultures, religion, traditions and social backgrounds and ways of liv-ing will serve as a cornerstone in building the new society, a new and upright Kabi-anga based on right, justice and equality.

It’s not new to me that formal freedom without substantive basis is, in effect; meaningless, and I say it again is Mean-ingless.. substantive freedom-a people’s style of living. Material, cultural, moral and a sense of human dignity cannot be bestowed upon people who do not want it, and if they do, are not prepared to help themselves, serve the people and make sacrifices where necessary for this attain-ment, they must help create the condi-tions for it.(changes, positive develop-ments, and visible and tangible outcomes within the campus).

Thus if the comrades in UoK are to rise in the ethnic social scale; if they are to gain respect from others, if they are to

be regarded as human beings rather than a social/ethnic outcast; then they must become consciously aware of the predica-ments, the degradation which is bond of their common identity as comrades.

As I rest my case I would like to urge my dear comrades to maintain the spirit of unity, brotherhood/sisterhood and the re-spect each one of us deserves irrespective of your origin, social status, level of study, religious background and so forth or that the Kabianga fraternity will disappear in the foreseeable future. Be blessed all.

THIS DAY.....REPORTING!!!

Finally the UoK’s opening date for the year 2014 appears or rather is published in the Standard News-

paper officially. Everyone or let me say every student has been anticipating for this day the 13th of January. However, there is no group of students that had waited for this day more than the 2nd years. I need not to say the reason as to why because everyone does.

I think the happiest people are the motorists and the taxi drivers of the Premier-Taplotin road on receiving the news of the opening date. You know why? This is to be called the boom season for them. They are supposed to be making money, money and money like no ones business. Of-course I cannot forget to mention the commerce people around the area i.e the kiosk owners, market, hawkers and the rest; landlords of rental houses included because their busi-nesses are supposedly ‘revived’ when the students get back. As for the students, no one can tell the reason for their joy except themselves. They got their own dif-ferent reasons as to why they seem to be happy whenever they are back to campus corridors.

On the contrary, only 20% or less report

on this day. This is because almost 80% of the students do arrive a week earlier and others a day before. If not for this menace called accommodation shortage, then I think that students will have started streaming in a day after the opening date onwards.Back in Kabianga it’s unusually hot and dusty. Even the mornings that are always chilly and misty are no more. Let us just assume that it is only for a short time moreso January and everything will fall back to place.

With the population of students in Kabianga being almost 6000 and only 6 hostels available in the school, thanks to our senator Keter who added one more outside the campus, we shall still be tak-ing about this accommodation crisis. It’s because of this we are forced to report earlier than the stipulated time just to put up with our friends who have decided not to be bothered by this problem by renting houses outside the residential halls. So we do that in order to be in the institution for registration by 1 a.m on the D-day.

The UOK’s gate is flooded once again by students who don’t want to miss rooms in the campus. So registration kicks off at midnight. Everyone wants their name

to appear on the list hence the students get rowdy in those queues . The guards then decide that ladies queue separately from men therefore the process goes on smoothly.By eight in the morning the official regis-tration commences and students, despite the list they had written that very early morning, crowd at the door expecting to hear their names being read 1st even after knowing that one appears number 2000 on the list. The process starts on a high note but as it approaches six in the evening, not even a quarter of the population has been allocated rooms. Therefore the exercise goes on for 3 more days while the students are supposed to show patience of the highest order during that time because this means that for those without rooms yet, have to look for somewhere to lay their heads during the night and come back again the next day with hope that they will get rooms. As the rooms are offered on the basis of first come first served then one has got no choice than to accept the hostel they are allocated even if it’s not what they actually want. This process takes almost a week but at last it’s over and everyone has to prepare and work on their academics and that’s the bottom line for all.

The Risk of willTaking the first step

Indeed, the Bible is as practical as it is, “To reap the best, there must be a risk of will.”Great men like Stephen, Paul

and Jesus Christ Himself were forced to undergo suffering from the hand of “good men” who came to fulfill the word according to the prophets. The men of the Lord saw that there was nothing they could do that couldn’t be done or make that couldn’t be made, all they needed is love with their Creator.

When I was introduced to my education system, the so called 8.4.4 level system, I thought that my parents were introduc-ing me to greater risks of life that I was not willing to undergo. Perhaps, they were risking but they discovered that the higher the risk the higher the return. I never knew that I was a raw material be-ing subjected in an industry to shape my future and emerge as a finished product ready to take my position in the market. My primary and O-level was a bit chal-lenging. Despite the hardships, I knew that I could come up with solutions with time. To me nothing was hard because in life, to attain your dreams (which result from imaginations) is possible but not easy.

Nothing is impossible if our determina-tion to succeed is strong enough. Failure was always part of me, but I never blamed anyone for this, but myself. One thing I knew was that,“failure is part of our maturing process,” and this would always prompt me not just to sit back and lament over my past. My aim was to take action and produce specific tangible re-sults that the “doubting Thomases” could touch and feel to believe. All I needed was the whole world to believe in me.

From the Bible, allow me to share with you, Philippians 2:5 – 8, “Your attitude should be the kind of that shown to us by Christ, who though he was God, did not demand and cling to his rights as God, but laid aside his mighty powers and glory, taking the disguise as a slave and becoming like men. And humbled him-self even further going so far as actually to die as a criminal death on the cross.”

Excelling in exams does not mean the end of struggle in life but rather, that’s the thought of a villagers. Jesus was the son of God, but that could not bar him from taking risk because he knew the benefit behind it. The very first day to be admit-ted in the university was overwhelming not knowing I would spend my night in the corridors of the university due to accommodation commotion. However, I was not perturbed at all, because in life one does not live a positive life with a negative mind. This always saps ones energy and relegate one to their level. Instead, one needs to focus on perfecting dexterity to the point of being called an expert. When this is done, one discov-ers that success is the sweetest form of revenge.

In life one must learn to detach them-selves from the fear of failure to the joy of success, from threat avoidance to maximizing opportunities. Give people the opportunities to prove themselves. Be motivated and focus on things that will better your tomorrow and not those that will better your memories of the past. Robert Kiyosaki said: “You don’t let the fear of losing be greater than the excite-ment of winning.”

The University of Kabianga frater-nity was mourning. A family in Western Kenya was mourning too

with us. One of our own, comrade of comrades, son of a man, friend of friends was no more with us. His breath had stopped and he was gone to soon. John Masafu was no more. The tragic event that happened in Chemosit river was trauma-tizing and shocking. (May his soul rest in peace).

It was the time Henry Mutali had some-thing to offer then. His outspoken and walking the talk man came to be known by many. He did what he can, using what he had, and begun where he was. He also devoted himself when Jerry Olem, a Rugby captain was involved in an ac-cident and was hospitalised in Eldoret Private Hospital for more than a month. He led the contribution to help settle the ever shooting hospiata Bill as well as moral support by visiting him daily.

As the wheel driver of the popular asso-ciation, Mutali used his bargaining power together with the Students Governing Council in creating an avenue to raising funds to aid the programme of funeral. He was always with the family, and at the job too. He dug to his pocket to help where possible.

The Education Science fellow, eloquent and charismatic in English both written and oral is a politically-oriented fellow and a leader University of Kabianga never had. He didn’t find chance to do great things but you will also agree with me that he did the things thought to be small in a great way. He has made the WEUSA stronger than before. He has some influence for change. He speaks with command. He is a devoted gentleman full of vision and mercy to the less fortunate members in the society. He cannot sit back and watch things done in a wrong way. He shouts out without fear or favor. His effort won’t go unnoticed in developing the institution and mentoring the young fellow on matters of life and contempo-rary social issues.

In this years survey done by Sentinel Facebook group on the most influential character in the social media, Mutali scooped the title beating Abdulkarim, Gift and other eloquent speakers of the page in terms of articulating issues related to students’ affairs. Mr. Mutali is yet to graduate later this year.

Remember, Henry Ward Beecher, said, “Every charitable act is a stepping stone toward heaven.”We salute you brother. May you have the best endavours in life.

Health Matters

Asthma and your airways

Asthma is a disease characterized by the obstruction and inflam-mation of the lower airways.

And it can affect all people- regardless of age or gender. The obstruction occurs due to excess sensitivity to various stimuli which enter airways through breathed-in air such as cold, pollen, feathers, fur, to-bacco smoke and mite-dust in house. This triggers the muscles of the airway to tighten, swell and produce a lot of mucus therefore narrowing the passage.

Symptoms and Signs

1. Chest pains2. Chest tightness3. Difficulty in breathing4 Cough5. Wheezing sound while breathing6.Fatigue after mild-moderate exercise Symptoms seem to be worse at night, early in the morning or when it is cold, dusty or smoky.

Investigations

Common tests which can be done in-clude X-ray, checking blood oxygen lev-els which gauge the severity of attack, blood test for infections (respiratory systems functions, precipitate), exercise test, histamine or methacholine bron-chial or lower airway provocation test, forced expiration test of as part of lung function test.

Treatment

Reliever medicine used to relieve symp-toms once they occur like Ventolin, Combivent.Preventive medicine used to reduce the inflammation of the airways and prevent symptoms from occurring or recurring.Steroid and anti-allergy drugs.Asthma medicines are most effec-tive when inhaled with assistance of inhalers. With chest infection, cough expectorants and antibiotics are also prescribed.

Prevention

To prevent asthma or reduce their severity;

Regularly clean or air your bedding and use sealed mattresses.

Avoid living with pets with fur such as cats and dogs.

Get rid of carpets or regularly vacuum-clean them.

If possible use duvets instead of blan-kets.

Clean your house regularly.

Keep warm during cold weather and dress warm at night or early morning when chilly.

Health Matters

Use inhalers regularly if attacks are triggered by exercise before workout.Get any sinus or chest infections treated easily to avoid an attack.Avoid smoking and use of some drugs.

Asthma has seasonal fluctuations mainly due to the allergens. There is no known cure for it but if well managed, a person can live a healthy life and achieve life full of potential.

Asthma management involves being aware of what triggers it and taking ap-propriate steps to keep it at bay.Keep safe my fellow, if symptoms per-sist see the doctor!!!

Dreaming big

We live in the world of impos-sibilities. Everyday we engage in tussle trying to outdo these

problems, little do we know that relative to our dismal failures lies all the re-quired solution, but who is to offer this? In his verbatim, Dr. William Dement says,”Dreaming permits each and eve-ryone of us to quietly and safely in sane every night of life”. Dreams are weired, chaotic and crazy but the either way round creates an avenue for ones vision identification.

Our lives in Campus has been offering no new angles especially to the disadvan-taged. This is in the sense that everything seem to be in a win-and-win struggle but if you are unprivileged then you are des-tined to remain swimming in the pool of uncertainties. It is just like haggling while in real sense, to your cognizance, there is nothing money-like “speaking” in your pockets. Approaching friends at some point don’t even superficially add spice to your advantage.

Forsooth, human intuition is an impor-tant factor in outlining how one particu-larly student ought to value one another with reference to the creation mazzims. Everyone should have loath-free mind to help reduce oscillation between our contradictory desires. Growing is the desire of everyone independent of where him/her comes from, who he/she is and the main issue that should linger in the mind should not be how much one grows but how many have the opportunity to grow through you as the ladder to their elevation.

The road map created by our heroes is one of the most prerequisite factors which we should embrace in order to hone our skills in the field of our profes-sionalism. It all revolves around being

visionary and forgetting our worries for they are futile and abasing, and will only dwindle our attention to gear in developmental objectives. To ascertain this, a student speaker, Cheryl Williams says,”Worrying is like sitting in a rocking chair and rocking furiously. There is a great deal of movement and agitation but you don’t go anywhere.”It sounds abasing and humiliating to find an individual in an inordinate catastroph-ic space yet his/her counterpart gives a gruesome or naked eyes to the situation. The brand of this is further havoc.Lets get started, forget about yesterday, focus little on tomorrow but much on today. Charles Spurgeon says that our anxiety doesn’t empty tomorrow of its sorrows; it only empties today of its strength.

All organizations and institu-tions embrace leadership. It starts from the smallest unit of

society; the family. So we ask ourselves, what is leadership?

The term has been described as a pro-cess of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task.

There are chips that revolve around the term for instance traits, situational interactions, function, behaviour, power, vision, charisma, values among others. Different people have differ-ent approaches towards choosing their leaders, some elect, some believe in a Supernatural being- God- who shows them their leaders; hence God chooses their leaders. Some inherit leadership while others yet leave it to God to lead them.

All leaders have roles to play according to the institutions they lead but there are 5 fundamental attributes that all leaders must posses:

1. A leader must be a communicator2. A good leader must be a critical thinker3. Must be a decision maker4. Must be a team builder5. Must be an image builder

Then there are those qualities that earns one privilege to be acknowledged as a good leader. Some are honesty, ability to delegate, ability to commu-nicate effectively, sense of humour, confidence, commitment, positive attitude, creativity, intuition, ability to inspire and many other quality leader-ship traits.

Generally as leaders, know your subjects and what they expect from you. It’s therefore, your duty to do what is expected of you to the best of your ability. Remember, once a leader, always a leader!

Relationships

WHY RELATIONSHIPS TURN SOUR EASILY NOWADAYS

For the few years I have been living and taking my world as my lab, much comes and goes. Because no

man lives in a vacuum, social interaction has to take place. Affection and love has to be felt.

Talking of relationships, this is a very com-plicated topic in the 21st century and the most challenging one. The illusion of love, mistrust, impatience, revenge and lack of principles to guide one is among the major contributors of heart and love breakages.

The mentality that a man must propose to a woman is what still we have kept a belief. Thinking that it is a man who should provide every thing for you as a lady in this time is a misguided mind. Making your man a source of income, calling for chips, popcorns even pants yet you do nothing is dangerous for your coded courtship.

Being a miser is worse. Be a giver too. Mo-tivate your love. Give a surprise present to your partner. Never expect too much from your partner beyond his scope. Do unto your partner what you would like them to do unto you.

Many times I see fellows falling in love just because someone is physically looking good and nice. Other factors are discarded. And what does it take to be in a relationship that will live for years and still remain new and re-branded?

This is where I would like to share my experience in the courtship world that has taken more than 5 years yet it looks young and yearning. The feeling is still the same as it was 5 years back...

My tips are as follows:

1. Never hurry to be hooked up. Take your time looking for odds and evens. As a lady, the challenge is more. You are an angel of your own. Many will come your way want-ing your amazing attention and smile. Do your vetting. Screen the guys. And what does your heart tells you? Have you ever dreamed of a guy with certain characters?

Certain qualities? Look? Okey, it doesn’t come easily.

2. Never be an easy YES-Sayer. Learn to say No and Wait. This will help you adjust your dreams with guys around you. Know that your Mr. Right will automatically be around you. He is a guy whom if his name is mentioned, your heart sinks deeper in ecstatic mood.

3. He is always patient with you. He un-derstands you than your brother. He offers his help without request. You think of him, sweet melody sound comes your way with him.He never hurries to ask you for sex. He hugs you for more than a minute and you feel like you are on top of the world, an island of yourselves. Your body feels warm and relaxed. This is your man. Don’t go for looks, they can deceive. Don’t go for wealth, even that fades away. Go for someone who makes you smile because it takes only a smile to make a dark day seem bright...

4. Never use your body to attract atten-tion of a guy. Define what love is all about. Aristotle said: “Love is composed of single soul inhabiting two bodies.” it is a two-way traffic. Before you drop your skirt or biker, have in mind that you are loved in return. Don’t open up easily even to people who have no feelings for you as you do towards them.

5. Don’t surrender your whole love to someone lest you get disappointed. Love your partner 80% and keep the rest in your heart. Giving out total attention is danger-ous because if this goes sour, you will have somewhere to start from and build on the scars.

6. Remember what Benjamin Disrael said,”I am prepared for the worst, but hoping for the best.” As a sane person, always take risks. Hoping and praying for the best but have a room for anything. Relationships require this alongside respect, love and caring.

7. Love unconditionally. Love voluntarily. Never ask too much. Never be a product of circumstances but rather a product of your decisions and choices. Never take a revenge. Let communication bring you together. Take what Buddha said: “Health is the greatest gift, contentment the greatest wealth and faithfulness the best relation-ship.”

8.Be patient and hardworking. Show that you deserve the attention and caring. Be happy always. Control your anger. Be apol-ogetic albeit nothing wrong you’ve done. Solve your differences between the sheets. Never allow them step in the couch.

9.Always be there for each other. Be open and avoid blinkered dogmatic ways. Never listen to naysayers. Always seek for evidence. Trust yourselves and have your respect deeper.

10. Thomas Jefferson said: “In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock.” This means just play the cards. Respect everyone. Have friends. Chat and hug but when it comes to chastity, be firm and strong with your principles. Never be tempted by friends into illicit sexual acts that can ruin your relationship.

11. Finally, never gamble with life. Never attract many in your private life before you put on a ring. Stay with one and build, cement and surprise your relationship. You gamble with men/ladies you become con-fused during choice-making and may end-up making the worst choice in your life.

Don’t compare your life to others, you have no idea what their journey is all about.Wishing you all the best in your journey of searching, looking and identifying your life partner, body partner, a woman for your kitchen, a man for your bed, a father to your kids and a responsible mum for your home.
