Winter Walking Group

We have started a Discovery Point Winter Walking Group. We meet at the Discovery Point Cafe every Sunday morning at 9am. Please email me at [email protected] if you are interested.

There were fresh disbud chrysanthemums and coffees as a giveaway to any resident who brought along their letterbox voucher at the Discovery Point Café over the Mother’s Day weekend. The flowers looked beautiful and brightened up the café and many people’s day.

On a sunny Saturday morning in April, the residents of Discovery Point came to the Discovery Point Café for coffee and morning tea together. It was great to meet everyone and gather useful information about what people would like to see as part of the community program.

On Saturday 29 June, despite the terrible weather, over 100 members of our community came to the Jazz and Wine in the Chapel event in June. It was a fantastic night and a wonderful opportunity to mingle with fellow residents.

Discovery Point Cafe owners Peter and Josie did an amazing job catering for the event and we’re pretty sure no one went home hungry. The food was amazing! The Jazz band, “Sounds Great” got everyone in the mood to enjoy the evening.

Keeping Crace beautifulWith a humid end to summer, the weeds have been popping up in parks and open spaces, verges and gardens throughout Crace and across Canberra. The ACT Government is reminding residents that it is their responsibility to maintain their nature strips (verges). “It is accepted practice in the ACT that maintenance of the nature strip (verge), excluding street trees, is undertaken by the resident or lessee of the adjoining leased land,” TaMS Northside Operations Manager Patrick Nolan said. So with autumn here, now is a good opportunity to spend a little time weeding, mowing your verge and making your home looking its best.

When working on your verge please be on the lookout for Madagascan Fireweed, a small multi-stemmed

daisy-like plant with bright yellow flowers that have 13 petals. The weed is highly invasive and is toxic to horses and grazing livestock. Residents are urged to report Fireweed to Canberra Connect on 13 22 81 or by logging on to Fix My Street website at https://www.canberraconnect.act.gov.au/app/forms/fixmystreet. Residents may remove this weed themselves but should wear gloves as it can irritate the skin. Also double bag the weed when disposing of it to ensure it is not spread further.

The Crace Study 2014 survey resultsThe 2014 survey for The Crace Study has closed and last year over 330 people participated. Crace residents were positive about how Crace is turning out and 86.7% use the new shops in Crace Central often or very often. Satisfaction with Crace Central

was generally high (it had an average score of 8.6 out of 10 with 10 being completely satisfied), and the most common suggest for improvement was a post-box or post-office. The University of Canberra would like to thank everyone who took part in the study this year, helping to create an in-depth picture of lifestyle and health in a growing suburb, and congratulations to the sixteen prize winners from this year’s prize draw.

Crace Community Association UpdateThe Association has also been involved in many community events over the past few months, with members volunteering their time to help at Spring Into Fitness, the Community Garden Open Day, the launch of the Landcare Group, and the Crace Christmas Market (which was cancelled due to wet and stormy weather). A big thank you to all individuals, clubs and businesses who were a part of these events - you are what makes this community so great!

Do you love living in Crace and want to meet your local residents and have a say in future events? We are looking for volunteers who want to form a part

of the Crace Community Association and take on valuable roles to help their community flourish. The next meeting is being held on Wednesday 11th of March at the Crace Connections office at 7:00pm. Please email [email protected] if you want to come along and find out more on how you can be involved.

Crace Aboriginal Heritage WalkHave you ever thought about what was here in Crace before it became another suburb of Canberra? Those who attended the Aboriginal Heritage Walk on 23 November had the chance to find out more about the history of this area, as Ngunawal man Wally Bell led a guided walk around Crace. Wally explained that the natural features of this area including the Ginninderra Creek and the ridge line which was used as a lookout made this a well used area. Evidence of

Aboriginal camps and use of the area remains today; in the lower part of the Hilltop Reserve near Thadoona Street there is a large scar tree which has been preserved for its cultural heritage values. Scar trees were created when Aboriginal people removed bark to make canoes, shields and containers. Wally also discussed the uses of locally grown native plants, and how ‘bush tucker’ was gathered.

Thanks to Wally Bell for sharing your knowledge with us and answering our many questions with patience and good humour!

SADDLERS RIDGE

This quarter at Saddlers Ridge has been a great time to further develop relations with residents through the Welcome Visits, as well as through the Mother’s Day Champagne & Canapés evening that was held, providing a chance to spoil all the mothers at Saddler’s Ridge. This event also provided a great opportunity to further develop wonderful business partnerships within the estate.

Welcome Visits have been going well and the response from residents has been very positive. More than ninety percent of residents visited have completed the community survey. The last quarter has seen the number of active residents doubled in the community database, bringing not only more effective means of communicating with residents but also a better understanding of the demographics of the community. These statistics assist connections to create a more tailored community development program for the estate. It has been an absolute pleasure to complete my first full quarter for Saddlers Ridge and I’m looking forward to the next quarter.

Page 2 Walking Bus Snapshot

snapshotEmpowering every Australian child to get fit, have fun, stay safe and preserve the environment – all on the way to school.

The Walking Bus is made up of people, rather than metal and a motor, who use their feet as the “wheels”, their eyes as the “windows” and their legs as the “engine” that takes them to and from school.

It provides a safe, supervised way for primary school children to get to and from school, incorporating healthy activity into their daily routines. Children arrive at school energised and ready to learn. And because the Walking Bus directly contributes to fewer cars on the road, it significantly reduces pollution, traffic congestion and the risk of car accidents, especially around schools.

Each “bus” walks a set 1.5km route with at least one driver, usually a parent or grandparent, and picks up children at designated stops. Routes are chosen in consultation with local council safety officers and/or police. The Walking Bus is free for all children and all are welcome to jump on board, once their road safety training is complete.

Since 2000 the Carols at The Ponds musical spectacular has featured such entertainers as Kamahl, Erin James (Fiddler On The Roof, Cats, Wicked), Female Artist of the Year Felicity Urquhart, celebrated opera singer Warren Fisher, winner of the McDonalds ARIA competition Angela Brun, and British comedian Johnny Pace as Santa Claus. The kids are enthralled by child vocal ensembles, the Monique Selwood Dance Academy, Santa’s always-spectacular entrance and Frosty the Snowman.

Masters of Ceremony have included media personalities Ron Wilson (10), Mark Ferguson (7) and Leigh Hatcher (Sky) and more recently former Australian test cricketer Gavin Robertson.

Carols at The Ponds is a festival atmosphere with food stalls and fun activities for children operating during the afternoon before the evening concert. The big finale is created by Australia’s best-known pyrotechnics experts, Howard & Son’s, who produce the New Years Eve fireworks celebrations on Sydney Harbour each year and staged the Commonwealth Games opening and closing ceremonies.

The 2013 Carols at The Ponds will be held on Sunday 15 December at Jonas Bradley Oval, The Ponds Boulevard, The Ponds.

Grieve UpwardsDavid Schaeffer

Coming soon!“The best book I have ever read

about dealing with grief.”Mark Ramsey - Senior Pastor, Citipointe Church

Grieve Upwards deals with questions often wrestled with during grief. This book contains valuable keys on pre-grieving, navigating the journey with a God who promises healing, guarantees death and illustrates how nothing takes our all-knowing Father by surprise.

How do males grieve different to females? How do you avoid falling into temptation?

How can you find love second time around? When are you ready for a new relationship?

How can you trust God again?

It concludes with the encouragement to begin writing the next chapter of your life.

“This book is both hopeful and helpful. I know you'll be blessed as you read it.”

Phil Pringle – Founder, President, C3i Global

A NOTE FROM DAVID

By the end of November 2014, CHI Books are making available my book “GRIEVE UPWARDS”. This has been a project 12 months in the making and we are excited to make it available in both hard copy and eBook format and

on multiple platforms around the world

I have given it to a wide group of people to critique, and they have been supportive, encouraging and extremely helpful with their comments. Possibly none have been so supportive as my wonderful son-in-law, Rohan, who

married my daughter Belinda and loved her brilliantly for 15 months before having to say a painful yet temporary goodbye.

After reading it he said 1. I couldn’t put it down 2. It was well written 3. It was full of hope

You may like to make a pre distribution order for yourself or for others who need encouragement and insight for their season of grief.

You can email your order to me personally and we will invoice you for the books you require. As soon as the first run is printed we will forward them to you

SPEAKING ENGAGEMENTS

Grief is an “every person” experience; some are emotionally set back for life if they have no recovery pathway. I am available through 2015 to speak on this topic in any variety of formats; seminars, public meetings, workshops etc. Please contact me well in advance to arrange this. I will help people understand how to move forwards and

inspire them to rise again with courage.

Below is the introduction to the book, which I hope will inspire you to begin believing in its value.

INTRODUCTION

“One day we will understand why this is the best thing that could have happened to us.”

Those were the first words that came from my mouth. Where did they come from?

Unscripted.

Unexpected.

Unrehearsed.

I looked into the eyes of my two daughters who, with me, had just helplessly watched on as their mother and my wife, ceased breathing with one laboured, exhaling sigh.

In that moment, Marilyn’s body had surrendered to death, and her spirit surrendered to life.... into the safe arms of Jesus, and away from ours.

Fast–forward approximately ten years.

Belinda, one of the two daughters who, a decade previously, had stood at her mother’s bedside, now lay in the intensive care section in Sydney’s Royal Prince Alfred hospital. Four years earlier, this had been the very place

where she had received the gift of a liver transplant.

A grieving family somewhere in Australia had given permission for that organ to be taken from the dying body of their loved one and placed into Belinda’s dying body to give it life.

Now a rare and aggressive cancer was sweeping through her body like a firestorm. Its rapid advance had been made possible by an immune system, purposefully lowered to prevent her body from rejecting the new liver.

Rohan had been my son–in–law for an agonisingly brief fifteen months. Together, we watched numbly as the life support machines were turned off one by one. At 32 years of age, Belinda took the same safe passage into

eternity her mother had taken ten years earlier.

How does one go through experiences like this and rise again to a new normal, richer and stronger for the

experience?

Read on...
