THE SERIES

• OVERARCHING MISSION ALA STAR TREK OR BATTLESTAR

• ENTIRE FIRST SEASON DEALS WITH THE FLEECE--TO HELL AND BACK

Page 30: Argonauts

THE PILOT• Theseus falls asleep on the night watch for having drunk too much wine, and

leads them into a deadly storm. The Argonauts barely survive the tempest, which is made even more dangerous by the appearance of a huge sea monster. Only Hercules, with a blow from his enormous club, is able to kill the beast.

• The next morning there is uproar and discord among the Argonauts. Hercules forcefully reproaches the irresponsible youth Theseus. The two nearly come to blows. Jason calms them down. They hold a council of what to do: the storm has blown them badly off course, their sails are damaged, the possibility of returning to Ioclus in time for the Solstice deadline seems remote. Tiphys, the steersman, tells them of a shortcut to the land of the Fleece that will save them weeks--but involves passage through the Clashing Rocks, and into the Black Sea. It is a strait through which no vessel has ever passed. However, legend has it that a local King Phineas knows the secret of the passage. Jason makes the decision to set sail for Phineas’ kingdom, and to ask for his guidance in getting through the Rocks.

Page 31: Argonauts

PILOT PT. 2• The Argonauts land on Salmydeusseus, Phineas’ kingdom, to find a land under a

terrible curse. The Gods have damned Phineas and his people to starvation, in retribution for Phineas’ abusing his gift of prophecy. A blind seer, Phineas has foretold too much of Heaven’s plans, and for that has been condemned to an endless starvation. Flocks of flying beasts, known as the Harpies, ravage the land of all edible food. Any scraps left behind are contaminated so as to be inedible.

• Phineas agrees to reveal the secret of the passage in exchange for the Argonauts’ help in killing the Harpies. Jason leads a small expedition into the harpies hellish eeyrie. Hercules and Theseus’ ongoing feud culminates in the battle with the monsters, with the young hothead finally winning the hero’s begrudging trust in battle. Tiphys, the steersman, is killed however.

• Phineas reveals that the secret to the clashing rocks is to follow the flight of a dove through the channel. They set off again, but reach the rocks in a rainstorm, from which the bird disappears, with the inexperienced steersman Jason at the helm…

EPISODE STRUCTURE• Each episode, the A story will consist of a ‘labor’ or

‘feat’, that the Argonauts must overcome to advance in their quest. Flashbacks will fill in the backstory of the origin of their quest and the personal dynamics of the characters. The B story will focus on a particular relationship between characters, and the C story will have us crosscut back to Ioclus and the evil King Pelias, as he monitors the Argonauts and takes pains to undermine their progress.

• Flashbacks will illuminate specific Argonauts’ backstories
