Are You Smarter Than An AI?

In 2015, a group of 700 computer scientists based in San Francisco held a contest to build an AI- (Artificial Intelligence)- that can solve an eighth-grade science test. The grand prize was an astounding $80,000 dollars! All of the AI’s didn’t pass the test, the highest grade an AI got was a 60%. Little did any of them know, an organi-zation in Seattle was inspired to accomplish what wasn’t accom-plished that year. The Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Seattle created an AI, Aristo, named after Greek philosopher Aris-totle - the AI blew the test out of the water. Aristo correctly an-swered 90% of the questions on the 8th grade test and 80% on a 12th grade test! The robot used logic rather than simple memory to an-swer the questions. Aristo is an advancement in AI technology and basic knowledge.

This month of September contains a bountiful of interesting events and history to offer. On September 1, 1939, Germany invaded Poland, start-ing World War Two. Weirdly, on September 2, 1945, World War Two ended. On a patriotic day September 9, 1776, the country of the United States of America was named. On a tragic day September 11, 2001, four planes were hijacked, two of which hit both of the towers of the World Trade Center, one of the planes hit the Pentagon, and the final plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania after being taken over by passengers. Nearly three thousand innocent people died on that day. On another pat-riotic day, on September 17, 1787, at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia twelve delegates proposed the U.S Constitution, which is the birthplace of the U.S that we know today. On September 2nd, 1666, the Great Fire of London occurred. On September 3, 1783, the Treaty of Paris was signed, which marked the end of the American Revolution. September is definitely a month rich American history.

WE SHALL NEVER FORGET

September is Filled with History

On September 11, 2001, a tragedy struck the United States shocking the entire world. De-spite the devastation, America became more united than ever to find justice. This event will never be forgotten, and people in America will continue to take this day to pay tribute to all those lives lost. Bay Harbor Town members and RKBBHK-8 staff and students gathered together in a ceremony outside the Community Center. Bay Harbor police, firefighters, Mayor Stephanie Bruder, School Administration, counselors, and many more were in attendance. The ceremony started with several speeches with words of encouragement. The Ruth K Broad band played the national anthem, ending off with a moment of silence. Afterwards, the police had the flag at half-mast to pay tribute to the fallen of 9/11. As the town mayor of Bay Harbor, Stephanie Bruder stated, “Be positive, stay strong, keep looking forward, never forget, but don’t let that affect you in your happiness

and future.” Another spectacular speech was presented by Student Council President Car-olyn Bartroff’s left her audience with hope for the future as well. This day will always be a day to remember, not only as a tragedy, but a way to become stronger, stronger as a nation.

Movie Review

Angry Birds 2, made by Rovio Entertainment and Sony Animations, was released on August 14,2019. It takes place in the fictional land of Bird Island. After hu-mongous ice balls fall on both islands, the main character, Red, has to team up with his enemy, the Pigs, to pro-tect Bird Island and Piggy Island from the Eagles. The Pigs want to take over the islands and remove their in-habitants so that they can make a paradise for themselves. The Ea-gles use superweapons to send balls of ice to flush the birds and pigs out. Later on, the Ea-gles decide to put lava inside the ice balls. Critics rate the Angry Birds 2 movie a WHOPPING 9.0374521845 out of 1010.45368596.

Hurricane Season

The 2019 hurricane season started off in late May with Andrea, but in mid-July Barry hit Louisiana as a low-end category 1 with winds of 75 mph. The storm killed one man and cost 600 million dollars in damages. From August 24 to September 8 Dorian went on a tear making hurricane landfalls in the U.S Virgin Islands, The Bahamas, North Carolina, and Canada. The storm did most of its damage in Bahamas where many are dead, many are still missing, and there are billions of dollars in damage. The storm peaked out as a category 5 as it made landfall on the Bahamas and stalled for over 40 hours. North Carolina was hit hard and so was the region of Halifax, Canada when it was hit by a post-tropical Dorian. Tropical storm, Imelda, struck Texas with 40 mph winds dumping 42 inches of rain in areas previously devas-tated by Hurricane Harvey. Tropical storm Karen struck Puerto Rico as a weak tropical storm and was originally thought to threaten Florida however, it was killed off by wind shear. Hurri-cane Lorenzo peaked out as a category 5 in the eastern Atlantic. Luckily for the nation’s Hurricane basin, most storms ended up being fish storms, and most scares were just that, scares. It is recommended that everyone continue to take precautions and prepare for the unexpected. So far, this season of storms has been active and the storm season just got started. Be safe!
