A full suite of Regenerative Therapies is now avail-able at Xcell Medical Group in Elyria for treatingchronic osteoarthritic pain.

Regenerative Therapy is a new breakthrough treat-ment option provides pain relief and healing withoutthe risks of surgery, general anesthesia, hospitalstays, or prolonged recovery and downtime from life.

By using a range of regenerative medicine treat-ments in conjunction with one another, we can helpyou reach a fuller recovery with fewer undesirableside effects. How are Regenerative Therapy Injections done?

After your initial consultation with our experi-enced doctors to see if this type of treatment canwork for you, we schedule a time for you to comeinto our office for the procedure, which takes lessthan one hour to perform.

Our Orthopedic Specialist, Dr. Jane Hoashi, MD,uses ultrasound-guided imaging to find the bestplace to inject the matrix mixture of cells, growthfactors, proteins, collagen, and hyaluronic acid intoyour joint.

The matrix mixture starts to metamorphosize intodifferent cells; this allows the growth factors to be-come tissue cells, bone cells, or other kinds that areneeded in that area.

Are you considering Regenerative Therapy?

This ability to become whatever cells are neces-sary in the affected area is what medical practi-tioners believe is so unique about RegenerativeTherapy. This huge number of growth factorsinjected into the body will help in healing theinjuries at an accelerated pace.

The best results for Regenerative Therapy aremost often seen in osteoarthritic joints.

To find out more about Regenerative Therapy, please attend one of our FREE lunch or dinnerevents: Tuesday, May 14 at Café Piccolo in Avonat 11:30am or Thursday, May 16 at Holiday InnExpress in Westlake at 6:30pm. Call us today at440-484-3232 to reserve your free seats – mealsare provided.

By Andrea L. Fisher, O.D.Prokera amniotic tissue proven to

reduce inflammation, prevent scar-ring and promote healing of the cor-neal surface

Amniotic membranes have be-come the mainstay treatment to healcorneal wounds, inflammation, andadvanced dry eye, since 2013. Thisdevice, which is a biologically activeamniotic tissue, is in the form of acontact lens that is placed on thecornea and worn for the duration ofthe treatment, which lasts three tofive days. Prokera provides mechani-cal protection for ocular surfacedisease similar to a bandage contactlens, with additional properties thatpromote enhanced healing. Butwhat is ocular surface disease? Thiscondition causes distorted visionor blur, pain, recurrent infections, recurrent corneal erosions, itching, burning and lasting redness thatdoesn’t go away. If you have any ofthese symptoms, you should ask your

eye doctor if ocular surface disease isthe cause. Prokera can also be usedin conditions where bandage contactlenses are contraindicated, such asherpes keratitis, corneal ulcers, andfilamentary keratitis. Not only is thedevice indicated in persistent cornealdefects, dry eyes, recurrent cornealerosions, chemical burns, and infec-tious conditions, it is also indicatedfor corneal dystrophies, such asSalzmann’s degeneration, and in thetreatment of endothelial dystrophies, such as Cogans’ (Anterior basementmembrane dystrophy), which is alsocalled Map-dot fingerprint dystro-phy. But, how does it work? Themembrane is donated by consentingmothers after a scheduled cesareansection in the U.S. Amniotic mem-branes are the innermost lining ofthe amniotic sac, better known asthe placenta. Fresh amniotic mem-branes contain collagen, fibronectin, and hyaluronic acid, along witha combination of growth factors,

cytokines, and anti-inflammatoryproteins. All of these proteins, aminoacids, and enzymes promote healingand regeneration of tissue.

According to its maker, Bio-Tissue,the 16mm device conforms to theocular surface (the cornea) and in-hibits inflammation and scar forma-tion. It also, provides pain relief, and reduces hazy vision. The fittingprocess is similar to the fitting pro-cess of a bandage contact lens, andcan be performed in a minor surgeryroom with the patient sitting up-

right. After the device is in place, the patient needs to return to re-move the rubber retention ring fromthe eye within a week. Since it hasbeen FDA approved, antibiotic dropsmay also be used in conjunction withusage of Prokera, to prevent the de-velopment of secondary infections. The membrane is usually reabsorbedby the ocular surface by five days, which is also when the retention ringis removed. The ring that holds thetissue in place fits looser than a con-tact lens and keeping lens adhesionfrom irritating the corneal tissue.

If you are allergic to Ciprofloxacin,Amphotericin B, Glycerol, and/orDMEM, you would notify your doctorand the Prokera treatment is contra-indicated.

If you suffer from any corneal is-sues involving dryness, recurrentinflammation, corneal injury, andafter surgical correction of dystro-phies, talk to your eye care providerif Prokera is the best option for you.

By Attorney Elena A. Lidrbauch,M.Ed., CELAHickman & Lowder Co., L.P.A.

Earlier this year, my father-in-lawpassed away quietly in the middleof the night. He was 87 years old.Yes, he had been ill, but he wason the road to recovery—or so wethought—recovering in a rehab fa-cility. The 2:00 a.m. call informingmy husband of the news was a shockto the whole family. No one saw thiscoming, not yet anyway.

You might be asking, why was yourfamily so surprised? He was, afterall, an elderly man, recovering froman illness. But, logic and reasoningdon’t seem to matter when we arefaced with the loss of a loved one.No matter their age, no matter if theloss is sudden or anticipated, it is apainful experience. We always wantmore time with them.

While emotional preparation isdifficult, if not impossible, there

are some steps we can take ahead oftime. We can connect with our lovedones while they are still around andhelp them when they need help. Wecan be their advocates when theyneed one. We can talk to them abouttheir wishes regarding the care theyreceive, what matters the most tothem at the end, their fears about thedying process, and how best to plan.We can encourage them to pre-plantheir final arrangements, in as littleor as much detail as they wish. Themore they share with us, the morewe will be able to honor their choicesand, ultimately, their legacy.

Gray hair is a natural side effectof aging. The rate at which hairwill turn to gray differs based ongenetics and other factors. Somepeople may go gray seeminglyovernight, while others may gray atthe temples first before the rest oftheir hair gradually changes color.

Aging women often wonder ifthey should cover up their grayhair or embrace the silver. Go-ing gray is no longer somethingthat has women running to theirstylists at the sight of the first graystrand. Some actually opt for silvereven before their own gray sets in.According to a 2017 survey of hairtrends by L’Oréal Professional, 28percent of women embraced orconsidered opting for silver hair. The trend has continued to gainsteam. Celebrities like Jamie LeeCurtis and Helen Mirren weresome of the first to embrace their

grays. Younger celebrities likeKendall Jenner, Pink and LadyGaga have opted for silver tressesto make a statement.

But there are still many womenwho prefer to transition graduallyor avoid the harsh chemicals insome hair products. The NationalCancer Institute states that morethan 5,000 different chemicals areused in hair dye products, some ofwhich are reported to be carcino-genic in animals. There are many

By Susan Poole, Development OfficerImagine creating a permanent leg-

acy that will keep on giving to yourfavorite cause or charity – forever. Now, imagine that you can make agift during your lifetime that wouldallow you and your family to witnessthe change in the community youhelped make. THIS is the power ofendowment funds. And it’s withinreach for everyone.

To get started, donors simply makea permanent, tax-deductible dona-tion to a Community Foundationor charity. The amount varies, butit can be as little as $10,000 depos-ited over a five-year period, as is thecase at the Community Foundationof Lorain County. The principal isinvested wisely and the income isused to provide ongoing, sustainablefunding for causes or organizations.Because only a percentage of theinvestment earnings are distributedas grants or scholarships, an endow-ment allows you to give more overtime, far more than a one-time giftwould be worth.

An endowment with a communityfoundation can be personalized tofulfill any charitable goal or passion. You can create a fund in your nameor your family’s name, in memory orhonor of a loved one, and to benefit aspecific cause or charity.

The endowment fund can be es-tablished now or at the time of pass-

ing. All Funds held at a communityfoundation are public which meansanyone can donate to any Fund atany time. By starting your endow-ment before death, you can encour-age friends and family to support thegrowth of your Fund. With a DonorAdvised Fund, donors are involvedin recommending what grants theirFund makes.

An endowment is unlike any othergift because it has permanence.Your gift will continue to grow, make grants annually in your name, and have lasting impact on yourcommunity forever.

Because all of our Funds are en-dowed, your donation to the Com-munity Foundation is unlike anyother gift; it has permanence. TheCommunity Foundation wisely in-vests the Funds’ assets and uses theinterest earned to provide grantsto non-profit organizations in ourcommunity. Your gift will continueto grow and have lasting impact onyour community...forever.

The Community Foundation ofLorain County can partner with youto help fulfill your personal, financialand charitable wishes.

natural ingredients that can add tint to hair to make gray less visible. Cof-fee, for example, can cover grays and add dimension to dark tresses. Cham-omile tea is recommended for blonds to add natural highlights and perhapscamouflage their grays. Calendula, marigold, rosehips, and hibiscus candeepen red shades or add some subtle red highlights. Henna also is a popu-lar natural method to add a red-orange color to hair. Creating highlights tooffset gray hair can work as well. Spraying lemon juice on hair and sittingin the sun can produce lightening effects.

Many women are seeking natural options to look their best. Embracinggrays or creating subtle tints with natural ingredients can help women feelconfident and beautiful.

These units are also easy to install and make very minimal impact on thehome. Most units bolt right into the stairs leaving little to no impact onthe walls of your stairwell. They also have fold up options ensuring morethan enough space for the rest of the family to go up and down the stairs asthey always have.

When selecting a stairlift company or model, be sure to consider if theyservice what they sell. If your unit stops operating down the road, you wantsomeone to be able to quickly and professionally repair it. Not all unitsoffer the same quality or warranty.
