    May 13 - May 27 , 2013

    Dear Friends,

You've probably heard a lot recently about transit and transportation.

How we move is critical to our success as a City. If people cannot get to

work quickly on our roads or public transit, or our cargo and goods

cannot move on our highways efficiently, our prosperity is put at risk. If

we do nothing, the situation will only get worse.

On May 9, 2013, I did an interview on CBC Radio's Metro Morning

with Matt Galloway and advocated for a regional transportation andtransit plan that will allow people and goods to move freely and quickly.

    Have a listen.

Within the debate on transit and transportation you have also likely

heard a lot about the Metrolinx 'Big Move'. Metrolinx is the provincial

organization that is in charge of planning transit in Ontario. They have

put together a long list of projects that will be built over the next 25

years, including the Hurontario LRT and the Mississauga Bus Rapid

    Transit Line (opening this fall!).

The cost of this plan is roughly $50 billion over 25 years, or $2 billion

per year. Given the enormity of this proposed project, I think it is time

that we have a thoughtful conversation not only about what our transit

and transportation plans will look like, but also how we will pay for

them. That's why I have been vocal on this issue, raising it at City

Council and with members of the Ontario government. It is also why I

will be joining the discussion on Tuesday, May 21st at the 2013Western GTA Summit.

Mayor McCallion is a co-chair of this Summit and will be joining her

fellow mayors from Oakville, Brampton, Caledon and Burlington for a

panel discussion on the issues affecting the residents of the Western

    GTA.

Listen to Mayor McCallion's message, here:

Mayor McCallion discusses the importance of the Western GTA

    Summit

The decisions we make today will have a lasting effect on future

generations. It is critical that we do not shy away from making the

tough decisions, but recognize that we must make investments today.

Now is the time to start taking action. We can no longer afford to

    wait.

Communicating effectively with the residentsof Ward 5

A few weeks ago I voted in favour of a modestincrease in City Councillor's communications budgetsbecause I believe communicating directly withresidents is one of the most important parts of my job.It is critical that all Councillors have the same ability toproperly communicate with their residents, but thecurrent funding model for Councillor budgets isinherently unfair and possibly undemocratic. Itallocates the same budget to each ward, regardless of

size of the size differences in populations betweenwards. For instance, Ward 5 has roughly 80,000residents, along with 10,000 businesses. Some wardsare half the size, yet still receive the same budget.I did not think it was fair that in some wards Councillors were able to spend moremoney per resident to communicate. Ask yourself if it is fair that Ward 5 residents areallocated $.34 per capita, whereas other wards have $.64 to spend on their residentsper capita. Regardless of where you live in Mississauga, everyone should be treatedequally.

I think it is only fair that the residents of Ward 5 be treated equally to those in otherwards. I have argued strongly for a per capita funding model, but this has not yet beenembraced by Council. If funding was allocated on a per capita basis, some wardswith smaller populations would lose money and those with larger populations wouldgain money, but the global budget allocated to the 11 Councillors would not change.

I will continue to advocate for equality across wards precisely because I respect taxpayers; I respect their right to be informed and their right to know what is happeningat City Hall and in their community.

I currently communicate with my residents through 2 annual hard copy newsletters, mywebsite, this bi-weekly e-newsletter and on social media. I would be interested toknow how you prefer to receive your information from City Hall.

As always, I can be reached at 905-896-5500 [email protected].
