December9,2015DearColleagues:OurGoverningBoardreceivedmygratitudeforspendingSaturdaywithusatourTrusteeworkshop.Itwasadaywellspent,andIlookforwardtoanotherone–pperhapsinthespring–wherewecandelveintosomemoreissues,especiallyreportsaboutourstudents’accomplishments.Webroughtoutalotofthings,andwehaveanicelistofotherthingstoattendto.Allinall,ourworkhelpsustakeanothersteptowardanewPeralta.BayAreaBusinessRoundtableMeetingBernardAshcraftandImettwoweeksago.HeistheCEOfortheBusinessRoundtable.HeprovidestrainingforindustryandhasreachedoutinthepasttoworkwithLaneyandMerritt.HewasoneofthefirsttodeveloptrainingforBiotechnologyintheBayArea.Wediscussedpotentialnewpartnerships,especiallyaswedomoreandmoreintheareaofcontracteducation.TheRoundtableisdefinitelyagoodorganizationthatbridgeseducationandbusiness.AlamedaCountyJuvenileJusticeCenter

LastweekIvisitedtheAlamedaCountyProbationOfficeandspenttimeinteractingwiththeChiefProbationOfficer,LaDonnaHarris.ChiefHarrisisalsoinchargeoftheJuvenileJusticeCenterthatcurrentlyhouses100juveniles.ThejuvenileoffendersarepredominantlyAfrican-Americansandyoungmen(80%).Fiftypercentoftheyoungpeople

arefromOakland.TheJuvenileDetentionCenterprovideseducationopportunitiesforincarceratedyouth.Therewillbearequestforaproposaltoprovideinnovativereadingactivitiesforthefacility.Ms.Harris,picturedtomyright,isconfidentaboutthequalityofeducationtheyoungpeoplereceiveattheCenter.However,oncetheyoungpeoplearereleasedandreturnedtotheenvironmenttheyleft,thateducationissometimesnotstrongenoughtowithstandthepressuretheyencounter.ThatisoneofseveralareasonwhichshewouldliketopartnerwithourDistrict.CaliforniaLifeScienceAwardsTrinaOstranderfromBayer,inBerkeley,invitedmetoattendtheCaliforniaLifeScienceAwardstwoweeksago.ThegatheringinSanFranciscohostedover1,000individualswithconnectionstoBiotechnology.IwasgladtoknowaboutoureffortsinbiotechnologyatPeralta,becausetheachievementsofthehonoreesshowthat,amongourfourColleges,weareaddressingmanyaspectsoftheindustry.Thegatheringtaughtmeseverallessons:• Theindustry,oratleastthehonorees,weremostlymen,althoughthereareafewwomen

whoarecompanyCEOs.• ThehonoreesweremostlyCaucasians.Thatisareflectionofalackofparticipationofnon-

whitesatthebasiclevelofeducationinthelifesciences.IalsoobservedthisatSolano,whereyoungstudentsofcolorwerenotavailingthemselvesofopportunitiestostudythelifesciences.

• Thediscoveriesthatwererecognizedwillprovideforgreatmeansoflivingand,therefore,higherincomesthatourstudentpopulationwillneedinordertocontinuetoliveinourregion.

• Theoutcomesoftheworkofthosecompaniesaremuchneededtocontinuetofightsomeofourmostchallengingdiseases.Theparticipationofallpeopleisimportanttocontinuetheworkandensurethatallsegmentsofoursocietyaretakenintoaccountintheresearchthatisunderway.

Icameoutoftheceremonymotivatedmorethanevertosupportourlifesciences,andtocontinuetofindwaystosupportoureffortstomakePeraltaaviabletrainingsourcefortheindustriesinourcommunitytomaintainandimprovethelivesofourresidents.AdultEducationMeetingTheworkoftheAdultEducationConsortiumcontinuestoevolve.Thepartners’group,whichincludesourColleges,sharedtheresourcesprovidedbythestateandagreedtoformaJointPowerAgreementandhireanExecutiveDirector.Piedmont,Berkeley,Alameda,OaklandandthePeraltascontinuetobethemostactiveparticipantsintheconsortium.Ifyouhaveanyquestionsorwanttoknowmoreabouttheinitiative,pleasecontactDr.KarenEngel.PortofOakland101

DuringmyaddresstotheDistrictonAugust19,IsharedmyinteractionwiththePortofOaklandandtheexcitementofPortexecutivestoworkwiththePeraltaCollegesinseveralways.OneoftheactivitieswewantedtodowasanintroductiontothePort.Twenty-fiveofourcolleagues,includingfaculty,presidents,deansandothersjoinedmetolearnaboutthePortofOaklandandseewherewecanmakenewconnectionsandstrengthenexistingones.Welearnedalotandwilldoalotoffollow-up.OneofourPeraltacolleaguessuggestedasortof“PERALTA101”wherewecansharewiththePortwhatwedo.WearelookingforwardtomakingthathappenintheNewYear.

FoodPantryConferenceTrusteeBrown,StudentTrusteeAbuyen,aswellasanotherstudentfromLaney,participatedinaconferencecalltodiscussthepotentialforPeraltaCollegestoparticipateinaFoodPantryprogramtoprovidealimentaryassistancetoourstudentswhoarehungry.Thereisanationalmodelaswellaslocalassistancethatmaybeprovidedtomakethisactivitypossible.ThePeraltaStudentCouncilwilldiscussthe

program,andtheColleges’Presidentswilldiscusstheissueandcometoaconsensusonthenextstep.Theneedforasustainableprogramwilldrivetheoutcome.SuzanneMungangaofAduroBiotechMs.MungangaisthePublicOutreachOfficerforAduroBiotech,anewerbiotechnologycompanybasedinBerkeley.Shereachedouttous,followingacoupleofmeetingsweattendedtogetherinthecommunity.Thecompanyisinterestedinbuildingthestrengthsofourschoolsinthesciences,andseesapartnershipwithourCollegesasastrongconduittothesuccessoftheiroutreachandamutualbenefitforPeralta.Aduroisofferinginternshipopportunitiesforourstudents.Weareschedulingatourofourprogramsforthecompany,sotheymayinteractwithourfacultyanddiscussfurthercooperation.AssemblymemberThurmond’sVisit

ServiceCentersEvaluationAsyoumighthavereadintheresultsoftheChancellor’ssurveyandtheaccreditationrecommendations,asaDistrict,wearenotsatisfiedwithsomeoftheserviceswearereceivingfromownservicecenters.Toaddressseveralissues,theservicecentersaregoingthroughaprogramreviewprocess.Partoftheprocessrequiresthatacoupleofsurveysbeconductedtoreceivemorefeedbackontheservicesouremployeesand

CollegesarereceivingfromtheDistrict.Therewillbebothquantitativeandqualitativeaspectstothesurvey.Iencourageyoutoparticipateinthesesurveys.Thequalitativewillconsistoffocusgroupstofurtherunderstandwhatweshoulddotocontinueorimprovetheserviceswereceive.FromtheservicecenterreviewswewilldeducesomedirectionsfortheDistrictintermsofresourceallocationsanddelineationofdutiesbetweentheDistrictandtheColleges.OnestepwewillendeavortotakeistostrengthentherelationshipsbetweenlikeunitsattheDistrictandtheColleges.MeetingwithFacultyatBCCAsIsharedbeforeinaC-DIRECT,IwasnotsatisfiedwiththeopportunityIprovidedforthefacultymembersatBCCandCOAtointeractwithmeatmylastopenforums.WereschedulednewforumsforbothCOAandBCC.TheforumatBerkeleyCityCollegehappenedthispastweek.Theleveloffacultyparticipationwasoutstandingandsowasthedepthandimportanceofthefeedbackprovided.MygratitudegoestotheBCCSenateandthefacultyforwelcomingmetothecampusandfortheirengagement.MylastfacultyforumwillbeattheCollegeofAlamedathisweek.BCCPresidentSomeofyoumayknowthatDr.DeborahBuddhasbeentappedtobecomethenextChancellorofSanJoseEvergreenCommunityCollegeDistrict.Aneffectivedatewillbeknownsoon,butIanticipatethatshewillleaveusaboutthethirdweekofJanuary.IwanttocongratulateherandthankherforherservicetotheDistrict.Wearelookingforaninterimpresident,aswellasconductingasearchforherpermanentreplacement.ImetlastweekwiththeCollegetodiscussbothappointments.IappreciatethefeedbackIreceivedfromfaculty,staff,studentsandadministrators.UMOJA/PAAAAImetlastweekwithsomerepresentativesofPAAAAtodiscussfundingandactionstepsforaMAP2.0orUMOJAprogramthatwillworkinharmonywithourexistingprogramsforAfrican-Americanstudents.Theinterestinmovingforwardisprettyhigh.IamgratefultothemembersofPAAAAnotonlyfortheirpatience,butalsofortheirdedicationtoensuringpositiveoutcomesandclosingtheachievementgap.IampleasedwiththelevelofcommitmentPAAAAmembersareshowingtomakesurethattheprogramsaresuccessful.

OurNewBudgetDirectorOurnewBudgetDirectorisMr.LutherAaberge(pronounced"A-berg"),whojoinedPeraltaonTuesday,December1st.Mr.AabergebringsoverthirtyyearsofprofessionalfinanceandbudgetingexperiencetothePCCDFinanceTeam.Mr.AabergewasbornandraisedinMontana,earninghisBSinBusinessAdministrationandanMBAfromtheUniversityofMontana,Missoula.HeworkedinfiscalservicesintheprivatesectorthereandalsotaughtfinanceandaccountingattheUniversityofNorthDakota.Havinghadhisfillofmid-westernwinters,Mr.AabergemovedtoCalifornianearlyfifteenyearsagoandhassinceprovidedbudgeting,financial,andaccountingguidanceintheK-12realmwhileservingintheroleofChiefBusinessOfficial.Currently,LutherservesasAssistantBudgetDirectorforUCBerkeley'sFoodServicesunderitsStudentServicesDivision.Mr.AabergesaysthathelooksforwardtoservingthePeraltaColleges,"offeringsupportandguidanceinthebudgetingandfinancialarena,”andthatheis“excitedtoworkinsuchadiverseenvironment,asdiversityisthebasisforabroadlifeexperience."PleaseextendawarmwelcometoMr.AabergeduringthemonthofDecemberifyouhavethechance.MerrittProgramsMakingInroadsHereareaseriesof(modified)emailsaboutsomeverygoodnews:
