A Message from the Principal
ENROLMENT 2013
I am re running the article from the last newsletter
with regards to enrolments for 2013.
There has been a significant change in the
assessment of Kindergarten and Pre Primary
applications received for enrolment 2013. The
Department of Education has announced that Pre
Primary will now be the first year of compulsory
education in Western Australia starting 2013, and
as such will now fall under the Local Intake Policy.
This means that ALL Pre Primary students who
reside in the Local Intake area are eligible to enrol
in their local school. Although not compulsory,
enrolment to the Kindergarten program will also be
Local Intake where possible. This means that ALL
Kindergarten students who reside in the Local
Intake area will be given priority to enrol in their
local school, however this does not guarantee
enrolment. Applications for Enrolment 2013 closes
on Friday, 3 August. After Friday, 3 August all
applications for enrolment will be assessed
according to the new policy. After the Local Intake
applications have been established, and where the
remaining number of applications exceeds the
number of places available at the school, the
Principal will give priority to applications in the
following order:
• Child whose usual place of residence is NOT
in the intake area who has a sibling enrolled
at the school for the year and who lives near-
est to the school.
• Child whose usual place of residence is NOT
in the intake area who does not have a sib-
ling enrolled at the school for the year and
who lives nearest to the school.
Applications for enrolment for Years 1-7 have not
changed and continue to be assessed according to
the Local Intake Policy. All applications for
enrolment require proof of your usual place of
residence. An example of this would be a utilities
account (electricity, water or telephone) showing
your name and usual place of residence. Please be
advised that it is the responsibility of the parent or
guardian to provide true and correct information to
the school at the time of applying for enrolment.
Where information is received and verified that true
and correct information has not been provided, the
Principal may cancel the Application for Enrolment.
General enrolment information, information on the
Local Intake area and the Appeals Process can be
found on our website www.ardrossps.wa.edu.au or
on the Department website at www.det.wa.edu.au.
Greetings to staff, students, parents and community
members and welcome to this edition of the school
newsletter. Last week my wife was in Sydney as part
of the National Gymnastics competition. Mrs Holmes
is the Head Judging Coordinator of Western Australia
and was in the State Team as a judge. I took a week’s
Long Service Leave to allow me to look after our four
boys. Mrs Holmes is due back today. While she has
been away, our eldest son reinjured his knee after
having a full knee reconstruction last May, spending
twelve months out of sport, our second son broke his
right thumb and my youngest son fractured his elbow.
Fortunately our third son escaped uninjured! I am
returning to work to recuperate!!!
YEAR 7 TRIP TO MOORE RIVER AND GINGIN
Last week Room 19 travelled to Moore River on
Wednesday and Thursday as part of their teaching
and learning program. They studied caves at Yanchep
and salinity and river conditions at Moore River. They
were met at the Gingin Gravitational Discovery
Centre on Friday by Room 20 students to continue
their program on astronomy and gravity. It was a
great success with all students being exemplary role
models for Ardross Primary School. Thank you to
Miss Heary and Mrs Bishop who spent the three days
with the students and Miss Pateman and
Mrs Edmonds who travelled with the kids to Gingin
on Friday. I am continually amazed by the learning
opportunities in which our students are involved.

INDIGENOUS PROFESSIONAL LEARNING
Last Tuesday sixteen staff spent three hours with Noel
Nannup, a respected Aboriginal Elder learning about the
significance of the local area to Noongar people. The morning
commenced on the river foreshore near Cunningham Road,
where Mr Nannup explained how the connection between the
earth and Aboriginal people was established a long time ago.
The traditional story of the Wagyl and the significance of
Wireless Hill was also explained. We then travelled to Point
Walter to continue with the traditional stories with many of
Perth’s significant landmarks linking back to Aboriginal
culture. This includes the Point Walter area being used as a
teaching place for women and children having Santa Maria, a
school for girls being built there, to across the river at Mosman
Park where the boys would go to become men, where an all
boys school, Christ Church Grammar is located. I would like to
thank Mr Nannup for his explanation and insight into
traditional aboriginal culture. Mrs Bishop and the staff are
using the aboriginal culture to enhance our teaching and
learning program.
SUPER SCIENCE
On Wednesday and Thursday this week and next, five students
from Year 5 with a flair for science will be involved in the Super
Science program at Applecross Senior High School.
Congratulations to Billy Chen, Juliette Keeffe, Joshua
Nicholson, Nathan Puckett and Lachlan Smyth for
representing Ardross in this program together with students
from Applecross, Brentwood, Booragoon and Mount Pleasant. A
big thank you to Mr Draper and the staff at Applecross Senior
High School for offering this program.
MATHLETICS
A reminder that all students from Pre Primary to Year 7 have
access to the Mathletics program at home and school thanks to
the generosity of the P&C. Teachers are new to this program,
but have been working on logging all students on to the system.
All students have a log in and password supplied. Should you
not be able to access Mathletics please see your classroom
teacher. I am sure that as we all start to get familiar with
Mathletics it will become a valuable teaching and learning
program.
JAPANESE STUDY TOUR
Thank you to the families who hosted a Japanese student in
March. As a result the school received just over $5000! A
wonderful effort. We have another group of 15 Japanese
students coming from Wednesday, 8 August - Thursday,
16 August and I need YOUR HELP to find billets for them. I
can assure families that over the last five years of hosting
students, (the last three from Japan) families have not had one
negative experience. The cultural experience of having these
students in our school and at your homes, provides our students
with knowledge and understanding that cannot be learnt in our
Japanese program. I need parent support for the program to
continue in its current form. Please complete the cut off
expression of interest form at the bottom of this page if you can
help.
Good luck to all Year 6 and 7 students who play interschool
sport against Applecross Primary this Friday.

MODCROSSE CARNIVAL SUCCESS
On 28 May 2012, Room 19 participated in the South of the
River Modcrosse Carnival, held at Goodchild Reserve in
Hamilton Hill. The competition was both intense and fierce.
Ardross played 6 games against 3 different schools - Armadale,
Rossmoyne and Southwell. All the games were played with
great sportsmanship, intelligence and skill. Exceptional team
strategies were executed during play and all payed off with two
Ardross teams placing 1st and 2nd by goal difference. At the
end of the day all teams played amazingly well.

SAVE YOUR HOLLOW BRANCHES
Are you pruning? If the limbs you are cutting down are hollow
please save them so that they can be used for our bird boxes.
Following a student request, Mr Colin Taylor and the
volunteers from Bicton Men’s Shed provided us with emergency
housing for our Pink and Grey Cockatoo pair. Now they have
prepared the parts for the students to make up four more bird
boxes but they need the hollow limbs to create realistic entry
holes. If you have a hollow branch please let us know where to
pick it up or bring it in to Mrs Bishop. Thank you.

P&C NEWS
We have been hosting Bunnings Sausage Sizzles for a few years
now. They are a great fundraiser. We’ve been lucky to have a
sponsor in the past who supplied us with sausages, buns,
onions and drinks. If you know of someone who might be able
to sponsor our P&C with these items next year please let me
know.
The P&C would also like to thank Heidi Lansdell, who recently
provided detailed traffic and engineering advice to help the
school understand how best to arrange excursions. It’s always
great when parents can provide their unique skills to us.
There are also a few organisations which provide our school
with a percentage of money spent. If you shop with Stuck on
You, Aussie Farmers or www.bubbler.com.au please nominate
our school so that we receive some extra revenue.
The next P&C meeting will be held on Monday, 11 June at
7.30pm. If you have a few hours to contribute towards one of
the P&C projects, it would be great if you could come along to
support our kids and school.
If you have any questions relating to our P&C, feel free to email
me at [email protected].

WATERWISE TIP - SPECIALISTS
As climate change continues to affect the amount of
rainfall we receive, we can no longer rely on rainfall
to charge our dams and ground water storage. This
is why the Water Corporation is developing water
sources, like desalination, that will not rely on
rainfall in the future. As a community, we too are doing our
best to teach our children to conserve our most precious
resource. You can do your bit by using a Water Corporation
endorsed Waterwise Specialist wherever possible. Our
Waterwise Specialists have been trained in the latest water
saving techniques and can help you save water and money.
Call 13 10 39 or visit www.watercorporation.com.au to find a
Waterwise Specialist.

ANNUAL BOOK COLLECTION
We’re conducting our annual book collection for our
school this week. We ask if you could send in any
second-hand books you no longer need or want so that
we can continue offering a wide variety of interesting
literature to our students.
We are looking for books suitable for 3 to 12 year olds. You can
donate any book you feel is appropriate for our library. It
doesn’t have to be new, as long as it’s in good condition. Books
we need include:
• Books for our library;
• Picture books (for Kindy and Pre Primary);
• First readers and easy readers; and
• Wooden puzzles for the younger kids (with all pieces,
packed in a plastic bag).
Please drop off your donations to the front office over the next
week - there’s a collection box. Thank you.
