Outline

• LCLS-II• AED review• FACET SAREC review• Accelerator education• Budgets and program• Future opportunities

– X-band rf program– BES Test facilities

• Questions

LCLS Upgrades

From J. Stohrpresentation to DOE

LCLS-II (Two Tunnel option)

Challenge is writing a CDR by March!

AED Review

• External review during last week of October– Number of specific suggestions but also some general

comments:

1. Aligning the underlying lab culture with the vision for SLAC is foundational its success. Specific mention of aligning lab vision to reality with regard to centrally managed/field deployed: change vision or change reality.

2. Lack of integrated approach to good engineering practices across the lab and within Engineering.

3. Improve the formulation and execution of budgets for resources and costs. Institute formal, monthly (quarterly) metrics reviews where milestones, costs, resource utilization and variances are reviewed at the division and AD levels.

FACET and SAREC Review• FACET construction making great progress

– Beam expected next summer

• First proposals for FACET will be reviewed January 10-12

ARD Education Programs

• Strengthening education programs in Accelerator Science and Technology– Restarted Accelerator Physics courses on campus– Developing new campus web pages with Applied Physics– Improving ARD web pages for student information

Suggestions for further improvement welcome!

Budget Status

• Budgets for FY11 are being finalized based on expected funding– HEP Accelerator Science is up 1M$ to support PWFA program– HEP Accelerator Development is down 0.5M$– ILC program is roughly flat at 10.5M$ (plus 5M$ carry-forward)

• Funded at 80% through continuing resolution– LARP and BES Accelerator R&D are flat at ~2M$ + carry-forward– LCLS and LCLS-II support are ~4M$– LCLS Accelerator physics ~1M$– Operations funding for FACET and ESTB of 6M$ and 0.4M$

• There are some new account numbers and some old accounts have been closed– Please pay attention to timesheets and adjust as efforts change

Redirection within ARD

• LCLS operation support and LCLS-II programs are growing– LCLS accelerator physics program being created

• Developing plan for next generation of BES-supported test facilities– High brightness injectors, seeding and beam manipulation

• ILC program will be decreasing over next few yearsProject-X, X-band R&D, and photon science programs– Project-X is focused on CW solid-state rf sources and pulsed 1.3

GHz rf sources; X-band R&D program is still being defined

• Building FACET and ESTB – will operate 4 test facilities• Planned participation in HL-LHC program• Super-B effort at SLAC put on hold until clarity in the

international community

Please pay attention to timesheets and adjust as efforts change

LHC

• Great progress– 1200 bunches now– 75 ns looks good

• HL-LHC program aimed at 2020 upgrades

X-band Program

• Three elements to program: research, development and commercialization – Strong effort in US High Gradient collaboration researching high

gradient structures and starting to research novel rf sources– Small effort developing improved rf sources (modifying existing

klystrons and output structures)– Starting effort in commercialization (req for 2 commercial tubes)

• X-band program has suffered greatly due to lack of ‘pull’ from community– Very few ‘users’ of technology except in boutique cases

• Biggest impediment to adoption is lack of commercial power sources and an operating demonstration linac– Working with LLNL on MEGa-ray 250 MeV linac– Exploring other options for X-band technology

Community Interest in X-band Rf Applications

• Lawrence Livermore National Lab (MEGa-ray ICS)• LANL (hard X-ray 50 keV FEL facility)• Extreme Light Infrastructure – Romania (600 MeV ICS)• Idaho Accelerator Center (60 MeV ICS)• PSI (extension of hard X-ray FEL facility)• Trieste (extension of soft x-ray FEL facility)• UK (new soft x-ray FEL)• Shanghai (new hard x-ray FEL)• KVI / University of Groningen (soft X-ray FEL)• PAL (new hard x-ray FEL)• CERN (path towards a linear collider)• NSLS-II (compact storage ring injector)

• Use LCLS injector beam distribution and H60 structure (a/l=0.18) after BC1• Transverse wakes have small impact due to shortlow charge bunches tolerances of 1 mm rms• Possible to operate in multibunch mode to feed undulator farm effective rep rate of few kHz

BES Accelerator Test Facility

• BES is starting to explore options for a stronger accelerator R&D program– Meeting on October 6th “Discussion on the Integration of Accelerator

Physics R&D and Operations”– Output of workshop: should integrate R&D into operating facilities

and community should develop a plan for dedicated test facilities– Been using LCLS to further R&D concepts: slotted foil, THz, self-

seeding– Developed multi-facetted plan towards a high brightness injector

• Possible opportunity for more rapid development or larger-scale program– Bob Hettel in charge of developing SLAC proposal for BES Test

May be additional opportunity for larger-scale program

Rf Gun Development with LLNL

• X-band rf gun has potential to enable compact linacs– Compact single-frequency linac compared with lower rf frequency– Higher brightness with ~ 3x higher peak currents for similar e – Lower emittance at low charge (@thermal emittance dominated)

• Constructing XTA in NLCTA and rf gun in collaboration with LLNL

Rf gun detail

Rf gun test beam line

• 100 MeV linac with variety of power sources, laser systems and flexible beam line– Direct laser acceleration– Echo-7 seeding experiment– Microwave rf gun and structure testing– Shared between HEP and BES programs
