Your starting point for innovation

State-of-the-art equipment and expertise at ArcX support our mission to optimise our customer’s processes at the lowest total cost.

Höganäs’ surface coating hub has been set up for a

very specific reason: we are committed to supplying the

best technical services achievable to the surface coating

industry. By creating ArcX, we have in effect established a

powerhouse of coating expertise and equipment.

Driving your business

ArcX enables us to fully support your quest to innovate

and drive your surface coating business. We have simul-

taneously created a bedrock for building enduring, suc-

cessful partnerships. We strongly believe in the power of

inspiration and learning from each other as a driving force

in creating new business opportunities.

So, the stage has been set. Why wait any longer?

Let’s start innovating.

We are pleased to introduce ArcX in Shanghai – the first of a new generation of surface coating technology centres, launched by Höganäs. As you get to know us, you will learn that ArcX offers capabilities far beyond the average tech centre.

To demonstrate, to master, to achieve

Expert know-how in materials, processes and customer

applications makes ArcX an intriguing development part-

ner. We have the means to develop the optimal surface

coating – at the lowest total cost to you.

Gut feeling and instinct are at times used as sole para-

meters for deciding the quality of a newly coated metal

surface. At ArcX we have adopted a quite different

approach: we are leaving nothing to chance.

We have set out to enable our engineers to efficiently

and scientifically identify and deploy the optimal process

window, for every Höganäs material applied in combi-

nation with the targeted application.

As a result you will get the most out of our metal pow-

ders and their many benefits – at the lowest total cost.

We are excited about the possibilities and eager to let you

give it a try.

Powders tailored for your applicationHöganäs is a global, independent powder manufacturer, providing a full range of products for surface coating. Our powders provide unique advantages combined with the correct alloy system and particle size distribution.

ArcX brings all these advantages to you. The powder lab equipment and inhouse materials know-how in Shanghai enable us to locally develop and optimise powders for your production.

Being the number-one metal powder producer in the world, the Höganäs’ brand has come to represent reliability, consistency and innovativeness. Once you partner with ArcX, you will also reap the benefits of a truly global partnership. The close cooperation be-tween the tech centres in the Höganäs network makes ArcX your local resource, with access to expertise from all over the world.

Höganäs – a global resource

Setting new standards in coating excellence

Added value: ArcX customers benefit from the Höganäs network, including tech centres and associated surface coating researchers.

The ArcX capabilitiesLaser claddingLaser cladding is a technique that bonds alloys to the sur-

face with a low degree of dilution. It is particularly suited to

use in high-volume automated applications.

It is a welding method that enables a metallic bonding with

the base material substrate.

A high-energy laser beam creates an intense heat input,

and thus alloys are bonded to the surface with a low

degree of dilution (<5%).

Laser case: Oil and gasDrill string stabilisers used in oil exploration are protected against erosion, abrasion and at times impact by laser-cladding the raised fins of the stabilizer with Rockit® or Surfit®40WPL. The laser process is desirable due to the low heat input and the precise control of the deposit’s grain structure.

Equipment8 kW diode laser with various optical confi-gurations for round and rectangle spots. Ten-axis robot motion system.

Process information• Cladding process• Dilution: 3~5%• Deposition rate: up to 8kg/hour

and 1m2/hour• Deposition thickness: 0.5~2mm• Suitable for Fe/Ni/Co base powder• Suitable for automation

Laser case: MiningReplacement of hard chrome plating by laser cladding. Hydraulic cylinders used in mining are clad via laser metal deposition. A variety of alloys – for example Rockit®401 – are used to enhance resistance to corrosion and abrasive wear.

Plasma Transferred ArcPlasma Transferred Arc (PTA) is a welding method, thus

it enables a metallic bonding with the base material. It is

ideal for high unit volume automated applications, such as

exhaust valves, this technique offers low base metal dilu-

tion and can be used with a wide range of consumables.

It can be used both on cast iron and bronze base materi-

als, including bronze containing zinc.

PTA Case: GETHardfacing earth-moving bucket teeth via PTA provides ease of control and ability to apply relatively thick deposits in one pass. Rockit® or Surfit®59WPL is used on the teeth for resistance to abrasion and severe impact.

PTA Case: Plastics Plastic extrusion screws are

hardfaced with 2541 or 1550 to resist abrasion and corrosion

at elevated temperatures from the fibreglass-filled feedstock.

PTA provides efficient deposition and excellent

control of dilution.

Application developmentBy bringing the ArcX’ and Höganäs’ networks and innovative customers and partners together, we are able

to explore new application areas for surface coating.

Flame sprayingThis two-step process (spraying followed by fusing) results

in a dense coating and a metallurgical bond. It is easy to

automate and can be adapted for the spraying of cylindri-

cal parts.

Handling heavy loads Neither size, nor weight, is an issue at our Asian tech

centre. The overhead travelling crane trailing the production hall provides the capacity to

handle large-size components, weighing up to 5 tonnes.

Process information• Spray & fusing process• Mechanical bonding• Deposition rate: up to 9kg/hour• Suitable for Ni/Co self-fluxing alloys

• Mostly for cylindrical parts

Flame Spray Case: Oil and gasSucker rod couplings in oil and gas extraction pumps are protec-ted against severe abrasion and corrosion with a coating of 1360 or 74M60 that is applied via flame spray and then a subsequent fusing of the coating.

Metallography lab With resources such as a scanning electron microscope (SEM), light optical microscope (LOM), EDX x-ray, macro/micro hardness tester and salt spray equipment for corrosion tests, our metallography lab is well equipped for analyzing your finished product properties and support solving production problems. The lab also contains all the necessary equipment for the preparation of samples prior to microscopic analysis or testing of chemistry and particle size distribution.

Process data generationWe have ensured an efficient and reliable way to

monitor and automatically collect process data from our processes. Properly applying DoE, Design

of experiments, we have a tool to find the optimal process window for various combinations of

substrate and coatings.

TrainingRecognising the importanceof continuous learning and training, ArcX brings specialists from all over the world to conduct training in applications, processes and powders.

Implementing a new powder or application into your

existing production lines may not pose a problem.

However, we are committed to delivering quality.

After demonstrating proof of concept, we are able to

facilitate first-series production at ArcX.
