Introduction Archon Engicon Ltd. was incorporated in the year 2002 with tower manufacturing facility of 36000
MT per annum at Ahmadabad Gujarat (INDIA). Since its inception, ARCHON has established its
Brand name in market for manufacturing of Transmission & Telecom towers along with Solar Panel
module structures, Wind Energy structures, EPC and turnkey Power Transmission project execution
and TSP for telecommunication.
Year 2005 onwards, company started its Turnkey Project Services to Telecom companies like
VODAFONE, TATA, IDEA, AIRTEL, and AIRCEL.
Year 2009 onwards, started Turnkey Project Execution services for Power Transmission lines upto
765KV and above, as well as Turnkey Solutions for Substations upto 765 KV. Now, Company has the
Manufacturing Capacity of more than 80000 MT per annum.
This industry is manufacturer of the tele-communication as well as electric towers members for the
companies such as like GEB, Airtel, BSNL, Vodafone, TATA, etc. The plant capacity is of 150 tons
per day. The industry mainly performs bending, punching, drilling operation of members used in
development of towers. The recent achievement of industry is taking over of Accord industry of same
sector at Baroda.
Details of visit Raw Material:-
The raw material is in form of channels, strips, plates.
Mild Steel of 250 grades as per Indian Standards (IS).
Company strictly follows IS 2062 standards for quality assurance.
High Tensile Steel of 350 grades
Production Department:-
CNC Plate Punching Machine which is used for Drilling, Punching and Marking.
A plate with maximum thickness of 16 mm can be punched and greater than that shall be drilled
using hydraulic force in combination with CNC machine.
Before punching or drilling operation are done it is made sure that the plates are at 90⁰. A loading conveyor is situated on right side and unloading conveyor on left side. Chiller is used as
coolant. It has 6 punching units which work on pneumatic process. The hydraulic unit has a
maximum power of 40HP. CNC works on three axis namely X, A, B. Where X – axis is for plate
travel forward/backward, A – axis for punching/drilling on one face of angled plate and B – axis
for the other face.

Manual Operations for Cutting and Punching Process using press which runs on hydraulic unit.
Bending process is done like Up-Bending, Down-Bending, etc. using Torch Heat.
CNC Drilling Machine which is used for heavy section and angle section. It has 6 drills. Coolant
used is mixture of water and coolant liquid.
Bird gurads are made with the help of CNC Plasma arc cutting machine to protect the transmission
towers from any interruption from bird.
Plasma cutting can cut plate from 2 mm to 26 mm thickness.
Clips are produced which are small strip used to connect large angled strips through bolting.
Healing is done on the clips to prevent fouling problems while installing.

Material Development:-
Material is put in HCl solution for removing rust. HCl contain is around 4% to 18%.
Second step is to put it in Quenching Water for Acid Wash.
Free Flux is used for Galvanizing process to protect from rust. It contains Zinc Chloride,
Ammonium Chloride and Glycerin.
Zinc Bath which contains Gas Furnace and the temperature is around 450-460 degrees.
Quenching Tank is used for cooling purpose.
Sodium Dichromate is used to strengthen the bonding of Zinc & Steel.
Quality Check & Quality Assurance Department:-
The sample cutting process is done and the sample is collected from the raw material in the form of
strip.
The strip size is of 300 mm in length. Normally 1 piece is taken for sample from 50 pieces for
carrying out test on it.
Test that are conducted on the samples include Mechanical and Chemical tests.
Mechanical test can be done on Universal Testing Machine (UTM) used to find out tensile test, the
ultimate strength, yield strength and elongation of the sample.
The test piece is bent upto 180 degrees and also weight analysis is done.
Chemical Test is done from the machine namely Spectro Analyzer to check the chemical
composition of Carbon, Manganese, Phosphorus, Sulphur and Silicon. The content is checked by
using wavelengths. Spectro Analyzer uses Argon Gas which has a pressure of 130 bar or 1700 psi
(pounds per square inch). Setup time for the machine is around 15 to 20 minutes.
Specimen has to be prepared in prior as the surface finish of the test specimen should be good
enough to perform testing.

Feedback of students
Students had a good experience towards new sector of industry after this visit. Also company
showed some interest regarding training students which would be helpful for further
placements.
This visit also clear their ideas regarding the installation of such towers.
They are thankful to industry as well as management to arrange this visit.
