DefinitionA Toronto-based studio that works towards collaborative design action and seeks toachieve social, ecological and economic innovation. A small team spends one year immersed there researching and designing an ambitious public project on the future of global design.

Purpose toPractice design effectively today, through the elimination of boundariesbetween designers and other professionals, and between designers and the local and global constituents they serve. Discover new models that are collaborative, holistic models that consider the ecology, social equity, cultural values and economic properties.

RequirementsA vision that affirms the possibility of developing healthy and creatively interactiverelationships between the natural environment and human settlements. An affirmative design agenda that encourages us to create beautiful, healthy, sustaining environments for human and natural communities.

The team Designers are seen as a problem solver with the ability to effect positive change forhumanity. Students, teachers, industry and community experts come together not only as creators and designers, but as ambassadors of hope. All of them seekalternative development patterns and a viable path to a bright future.

The World House Project is a fundamentally collaborative and multi-disciplinary effort

• Confronted the necessary evolution of shelter by developing housing systems based on principles of sustainability, accessibility, technological responsiveness and ecological balance.

• Guided by projections about the 3 billion developing world citizens who will need shelter in 2030, the project aims to address the extremes of slums and sprawl by creating a dwelling appropriate to the world we'll have in 20, 30, 50 years.

• In 2007, a model prototype of the World House was constructed and would later be developed into the Canühome, a sustainable wood dwelling that premiered at the Green Living Show in 2008.

DefinitionAn open source community dedicated to improving living conditions through innovative and sustainable design.

Purpose to Allow designers to work together in a whole new way, a way that enables 5 billionpotential clients to access their skills and expertise. Generate not one idea but thehundreds of thousands of design ideas needed to improve living conditions for all.

RequirementsDesigners of all persuasions be able to 1)share their ideas, designs and plans,2) view and review designs posted by others, 3)collaborate with each other,people in other professions and community leaders to address specific design challenges, 3)manage design projects from concept to implementation,4)communicate easily amongst team members, 5)to protect their intellectual property rights using the, Creative Commons "some rights reserved" licensing system and be shielded from unwarranted liability, 6)build a more sustainable future.

The team Professionals like architects, designers, engineers and anyone else involved in thebuilding trades are welcome to share their ideas but also community leaders,nonprofit groups, volunteer organizations, government agencies, and others are alsoinvited to collaborate on projects and share their expertise.

Architecture For Humanity-Athens Through the Architecture for Humanity, solutions

are proposed and answers are given to problems and pathologies identified in the current environment (urban or not).

The group Architecture for Humanity, is not restricted to architects but to everyone who is interested in general design of a humanitarian nature at different scales of the urban environment.

AboutA non-profit, non-partisan and independent organization, was established in response to the climate change crisis by architect Edward Mazria in 2002. Is working to rapidly transform the Building Sector from the greatestcause to the leading solution to climate change. Architecture 2030's spreads around through the official Facebookpage, Twitter, subscriptions to E News Bulletins.

Purpose2030’s mission is to rapidly transform the US and global BuildingSector from the major contributor of greenhouse gas emissions to acentral part of the solution to the climate change crisis. Ttheir goal is straightforward: to achieve a dramatic reduction in the global-warming-causing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of the Building Sector by changing the way buildings and developments are planned, designed and constructed.

The 2030 ChallengeArchitecture 2030 issued The 2030 Challenge asking the global architecture and building community to adopt the following targets:

All new buildings, developments and major renovations shall be designed to meet a fossil fuel, GHG-emitting, energy consumption performance standard of 60% below the regional (or country) average for that building type.

At a minimum, an equal amount of existing building area shall be renovated annually to meet a fossil fuel, GHG-emitting, energy consumption performance standard of 60% of the regional (or country) average for that building type.

The fossil fuel reduction standard for all new buildings and major renovations shall be increased to:

70% in 2015 80% in 2020 90% in 2025 Carbon-neutral in 2030

These targets may be accomplished by implementing innovative sustainable design strategies, generating on-site renewable power and/or purchasing (20% maximum) renewable energy!!!!

Local, state and federal goverments can pass legislation and provide incentives to ensure that all buildings constructed and renovated today meet the 2030 Challenge targets.

Architects and Designers can adopt and implement the 2030 Challenge targets producing high-performance, high-quality and low-energy buildings and developments.

Design schools can take measures to reduce campus energy consumption and insure that the students graduating from their program are well equipped and prepared to design and build carbon-neutral environments.

Their basic website, based in web 2.0 platform promotes this eco-project (but even facebook and twitter).

It’s useful to people who are aware of this issue and students globally (all the information is available on the internet, they have quick access). Out of that, universities and professional studios become instruments for transforming design.

Teach by design? On their website, have a whole section on projects that begin to meet the targets, and do have buildings that fit that category, that they’ve designed over the years. (There were many buildings built in the late 70s, and during the 80s, using passive solar design, and day-lighting principles that actually put those buildings off the grid.)

They state «when we talk about a connection to the environment in architecture today, for the past 30 or 50 years we’ve just been talking about a visual connection. We haven’t been talking about a real, integrated, energy-based connection between the building and its environment. And that’s where the term open systems comes from – and where we need to be headed.»

It got the wheels turning within the architecture and building sector to figure out how to meet the Challenge. It began getting resources and information to architects and to designers about how to change course.

"CCloud" represents this new reality..

Its about a kind of three-dimensional puzzle composed of similar but different pieces. A computerized interface enables users from all over the world to design and produce one piece of the puzzle. The various pieces were produced in the end in various cities all over the world and sent to Tel Aviv.

You are one of many designers utilizing Twitter and Linkedin. What do you believe are the biggest benefits to the design community of tools like these? How do you think Designers

could be utilizing them in the future? «The future of the emerging social medias could possibly

dampen at least my personal frustration with the market-driven conservatism of design publishing, with its oversimplified approach to design as merely style, trends or technical.Designers have the opportunity to shape the perception of good design to the public, to communicate globally within the design community, and perhaps most importantly, to interact with the engineering community, the marketing community, the end users, on a informal level. We can challenge these communities to participate in creating what might be a missing dialogue and understanding between these diverse areas of specialization today.»

What skill set do you think the next generation of Designers will require? “In less than a decade, we have moved from

using pencils and paper as our primary tools to entering the digital age, where computers are not just replacing the pencils but are transforming design and architecture. Scripting, parametric design, animated design and algorithmic design are just a few examples of new methods of generating design, which were unthinkable 10 years ago.”

In closing, do you have any last thoughts or words of advice you would like to share? Every designer and student of design should

Female Architect,42 Not aware of the web 2.0. Generally I prefer the

traditional architectural methods of the parametric Design, and personal contact with the customer. The comfort and customer interaction with works of other architects poses the risk that the customer requires things that are not feasible to make at home. Of course the good thing is that it can operate promising future for the authenticity of the work that the client can seek from the architect and that knowledge make him more demanding.

About the open site I think in every country, society, social networking is different depending on culture, education, etc. Greece is far behind to get to do something similar to the Open Architecture Network but also to take place one architect there is difficult because of the insecurity of the Greeks around the copyright.

The Arcitecture 2030 consept is very important and their relevant competitions, since the eco-factor is increasingly, have a strong interest and i would like to participate. Well, in Greece when something is in fashion is expensive (materials bioclimatic house) in a small building (houses) is hard to do, but is more feasible in public works but still slow.

Mobile applications are for children. I prefer pencil and paper. Many younger people who use them do lose their scale and make mistakes. Of course i keep informed of developments in my area but if you will be charmed by the technology depends on you.

Generally, i watch architecture blogs-magazines but if i have any questions I prefer to phone someone or even a company to know up and prices. A forum i prefer more is the Greek portal of architecture www.michanikos.gr which i watch daily and it helps a lot. There, i may even post a question or answer anything.

Male Architect, 30 Parametric Design is important with many

perspectives! You can even provide platforms where the familiar customer can make small differences and become an active participant in your work!

I would move in the process of doing a site on the web 2.0 platform because now everyone has a simple site just to be on line. I would upload selected works to public crisis and debate but not on a research level, but only to enhance my purchasing power.

I didn knew about the Open architecture network but i am interested in joining it, it has potentials! Of course there are also Greek site where they promote area’s regeneration but are not so much active online. The security of copyright in competitions are more meticulously. Indeed there is an interaction with your fellow in educational nature.

I watch blogs but do not put up comments can not be contacted, but its a start to know each other and then discuss more private.

I use the mobile applications like autocad-android. I prefer it than pencil because it can be lost and it's easier for me. You can even use while you are at the ergotaxio and check some constants. Also, the more topographic applications such as layar- i phone have an interest but just for fun purposes.
